You are the first UX designer guy on RUclips that is not trying to make things look faster, more instantenous, more rapidily gratifying, but with patience and determination, with the rethoric of a person that admits that only perseverance and work will bring results, and I respect that. I respect it because there is this trend of presenting content in a fast rythm, a rythm which makes challanges seem easy (but they are not, that's why they are called challanges innit), especially for a corporate/business/ techy job where everybody wants to make things go faster to scroll on TT or sth. Respect and follow.
Thank you, Tim, This video is very timely manner for me. I just joined UX Bootcamp because I needed some structure for my career transition. All materials they provided me are helpful but I realized that my success will be determined by how much I put in effort and time outside of my class not only by taking a course. Your video reminded me of that fact again. Thank you!
that's so great to hear, Sejeong. I'm happy that I could help you out -- it's not easy, but it's definitely worth it if this is what you want to do in the future. put in the extra work, it'll compound. 🥳
Hi Tim, I'm about to start my new career transition journey to UX/UI designer. I'm not really sure which direction I want to go to atm but I'll keep studying and figure it out! (Hopefully). Because I do like solving the problems of what people wants and needs but at the same time I want to design UI elements and little interests in coding too. :-) Your video helps me a lot to picture my 2023-24 UX/UI journey. I felt in a rush as I'm 30 and I need to save up money so I've started other full-time ish work. :-/ But I'll take time and do what you said; learning basic design principles, recreating stuff, and building a portfolio, etc. :-) Just wanted to say thanks for great tips!! Hope you have a awesome day.
Hi. You have literally described my situation. I would like to connect with you so we could be study buddies and we could hold each other to account and share information. Because we really need that.
Great video! Don't know why I usually have a weird tought like "oh why am I going to start rightnow, there are a lot of professionals already in this area" but then watching this video, looking at the comments made me realize that I'm not late, nobody is, we just need to put that work on and provide our best.
This is one of the realest videos I’ve seen. Thank you! I’ve been working on my own business for over 15 years and am transitioning to the UX/UI field. So I can say as a veteran of business, this content is solid. The harder I work, the luckier I get! Thanks for making these from an old dude becoming a newbie UX designer.
Matt! so cool to get a comment from a former colleague and a great man like yourself. 😃 I’ll never forget your comment about the wacky object tracing for the logos in the Pacman LOTR video and how it made it funny. 😂 hope you’re doing super well, and thanks a lot for commenting my friend ☺️🙏
I'm truly excited to see this video acknowledging that a traditional design school isn't the only route to become a UI/UX designer in 2023. The 5-step process outlined here is a refreshing approach that emphasizes self-directed learning, leveraging online resources, and hands-on practice. It aligns perfectly with the modern way of learning, which is often more flexible, accessible, and tailored to individual needs. This approach not only saves time and money but also allows aspiring designers to develop practical skills and stay up-to-date with the rapidly evolving field. Kudos to the creators of this video for empowering self-starters on their journey to becoming skilled UI/UX designers!
Tim 💐 thank you for this amazing video. It actually helps me a lot for sticking to my career changing plan, becoming a self-taught designer. I used to work as an ux researcher or sometimes as a PM, but I’ve always wanted to be an ux designer. So, lately started studying by myself fighting for the doubts of uncertainty and feeling impatience at the same time. I have no design degree, so probably I should study from the zero but I come to think that I can do it maybe after watching your video. Thanks 🤍 from the other part of the world
I’m so happy to hear that it was helpful 🙏 it’s so so possible to become a self taught designer with all of the amazing resources we have available to us today - just stick to it and remember that in the end, as UI/UX designers, we’re mainly helping people get their jobs done in the easiest way possible. one that note: another resource I didn’t mention, but that’s truly golden, is the Jobs to be done framework. google it, read up on it and let me know what you think ☺️👌💜
@@TimGabe Does companies ask for a degree in computer related subjects to apply for a UX designer job? I think of becoming one by just finishing the Google UX course and improving my skills. But I'm still afraid if I would get a job or not
I love Jonathan Patterson portfolio. Problem I have with mine is that I like designing and want it to be similar to Patterson's, but I always kept hearing "show the process, show how you got to that point froms start to finish". This always confused me because I wasn't sure how much to UX research to add or UI so I always did both.
I think you should put weight on the things that shows your skillset in the area you want to work -- UX research and thought process, like I mentioned in the tutorial, is great to highlight if you're looking for a pure UX role. now, on the contrary, if I wanted to hire a person to do only UI work I wouldn't care nearly as much about their thought process. 😃 so in the end, ask yourself: what facets of your design game do you want to show the potential employer/client? make that the main character of the portfolio!

definitely!! the more AI-ified the field gets, the less it's going to be about pixel pushing and the more it's going to be about problem solving though... so if you like solving problems in creative ways, it's definitely for you!
hey Tim ,this is chirag , i am from india , background of mine ( was working as Android developer from 2017 to 2019 ) then we know that covid thing happened due to some personal problems 2020 to 22 I worked as freelancer here and there nothing much . Now I am currently trying to change my career after all the mess I did in past Can I start my career at 27 as a ux/ui designer from Android developer to this without having knowlege about graphics designing .. Please let me know with genuine answer. Thanks much love ❤
hey Chirag! 😊 I would even say that you have a huge advantage when going into UX/UI since you already know about the real development process. now, the graphics design part really is something that takes practice, practice and practice. I was HORRIBLE in the beginning. like, really really bad. so, I believe anyone who puts the time in and stay dedicated can make the transition within a year, for sure. think about it like this -- when you're 35 you'll be very senior in the field. 35 is nothing. at 40, you'll be a veteran. good luck, my friend 💜

How can I get a mentor? I've been reaching out to people but I've not been getting any reply. I've worked on some designs like you mentioned in the video. I need someone who can point out my mistakes and where I need to improve.
Could anyone recommend some good UI design courses? Most stuff i see (on Udemy for instance) is all-in-one courses including graphic design basics (which as a graphic designer i don't need) or full Figma/XD instructions. I wish to learn good practices on UI design, based on real knowledge, analysis and so on. Something really worth it to transition to UI design.
Hi! I'm also looking into some courses, I found one in Beetroot Academy and it seems pretty neat (haven't applied tho), they have an introduction UI/UX course for free check it out :)
Yes there is no need for a design school they are pulling cash from your pocket and sit on a chair teaching you design principles with slides, a checklist followed by random links they name the course “Web Design Pro”
The video and caption title does not make sense xD Besically what it stated is: Become UI/UX designer without school by becoming "self taught". Watching your or other videoes, is not being self taught xD It is exactly the same thing as a school without the defined environment of a school.
i think it'd take a lot of time to get good at design without using other resources than just your own imagination... 😅 resources should be used, but we don't have to go to an "official" school!

definitely!! the more AI-ified the field gets, the less it's going to be about pixel pushing and the more it's going to be about problem solving though... so if you like solving problems in creative ways, it's definitely for you!
@@TimGabe Thanks
How to get a internship please make a video
that’s a good video idea - will add it to the list, Jaswanth 😃 thanks!!
hey Tim ,this is chirag , i am from india , background of mine ( was working as Android developer from 2017 to 2019 ) then we know that covid thing happened due to some personal problems 2020 to 22 I worked as freelancer here and there nothing much . Now I am currently trying to change my career after all the mess I did in past
Can I start my career at 27 as a ux/ui designer from Android developer to this without having knowlege about graphics designing ..
Please let me know with genuine answer.
Thanks much love ❤
hey Chirag! 😊
I would even say that you have a huge advantage when going into UX/UI since you already know about the real development process.
now, the graphics design part really is something that takes practice, practice and practice.
@@TimGabeyou cleared my all doubt ,dude you can't imagine how much your words and encouragement means to me , I lost my loving mother this April I was feeling alone in this battle of World. She thought me not to give up so I better not . Thank you king for your reply and I will definitely try my best to become better version of my self hope we meet someday in future when I become something. 👑♥️
You are amazing man. I need a mentor like you!😃@@TimGabe
How long does design school take
it really depends on the school, but I’d say that most legit traditional education programs are at least 2+ years 😃
How can I get a mentor? I've been reaching out to people but I've not been getting any reply. I've worked on some designs like you mentioned in the video. I need someone who can point out my mistakes and where I need to improve.
i think this is a tricky one; being persistent (but respectful) and trying to offer something in return for mentorship are two things that could work!
Help me a lot
I'm happy you found it helpful, Liam! 🥳
Hi! I'm also looking into some courses, I found one in Beetroot Academy and it seems pretty neat (haven't applied tho), they have an introduction UI/UX course for free check it out :)
dope man just dope
Hi tim i am not creative person can i still be ux designer?
I believe UX is much less about being creative and much more about being empathetic and understanding user behaviour/flow, so definitely!! 🥳
Wow, didn't know Channing Tatum is also an UX expert! So cool that you took a break from all the gay cameos.
hahaha, good one!! 😂
"I can assure you that a year from now you'll be landing a design job" Do you mean a job or internship?
if you're really committed, a job!
Yes there is no need for a design school they are pulling cash from your pocket and sit on a chair teaching you design principles with slides, a checklist followed by random links they name the course “Web Design Pro”
I went to design school and I'm still self taught lmao they didn't teach me shit
haha, it's not always the quickest path, that's for sure...
The video and caption title does not make sense xD
Besically what it stated is: Become UI/UX designer without school by becoming "self taught".
Watching your or other videoes, is not being self taught xD It is exactly the same thing as a school without the defined environment of a school.
i think it'd take a lot of time to get good at design without using other resources than just your own imagination... 😅 resources should be used, but we don't have to go to an "official" school!
