I love how you broke down the whole process of you getting your (UX/UI) Product Design role - You basically UX'd your UX job. You were also at a huge advantage of having a coding background - that makes you more competitive since you understand what engineers need. I hope you embrace and recognize your skillset is amazing. What a turnaround time, Congratulations!!!
omg thank you so much! that means a lot :)
thank you for sharing your experience !! I admire your journey and the hustle you put in to making your goals a reality ! nothing more inspiring than seeing you share your experiences!
🙏🏻 thank you!!
Thank you so much for the uncut insightful content! This definitely helps a lot since I am applying for interships and jobs without a degree and even tho I have a dedicated portfolio of myself in UX design, I feel like it is literally impossible to get myself an interview or get my portfolio a review without any educational background. But, whatever I will keep on moving foward! Thank you and great talk!
Thank goodness! Just when I was feeling like giving up, you appeared! Thank you, Helen, for sharing all your generous experiences! Your authenticity and inspiration truly resonate with me. I completely align with your mindset in this video. Currently, I am actively seeking an internship in UI/UX, despite having no prior experience in this field. I only have a portfolio in landscape art design, and I've been trying to apply for internships, but it is really challenging to make my resume and portfolio stand out to HR. In your video, I realized the importance of following the job requirements and crafting a tailored CV. PS: As a foreigner, I really hope my English proficiency can be as strong as yours.
I’m so happy I found your channel! I am also based in Montreal and am starting my journey to transition into UX design from Marketing. This is the most relatable content I have found to date. Looking forward to your next videos!!
Awesome thanks for supporting :)
Omg this just happened to me!! lol no joke!! I went to a coding group and was in the process of a coding certification course.. I had to pause!! I’m good with adobe, Figma,Squarespace , Shopify, etc!! So tech savvy with these design softwares!! At heart I’m a designer!! Yessss lol I’m with you!! I wouldn’t be happy coding all day and not using my creativity! I’m back in the UI/UX!! I’ve tried other things also!! I always come back to the world of design!! Must be meant to be!!
i hear about alot of people finding themselves in the same situation as me!
Love the breakdown. Also you’re very nice on the eyes ☺️
Super interesting! I am graduating in graphic design and all the thinking process youve described from the very beginning felt like you were reading my mind hahah, so thank you this was very useful and interesting!!
glad to hear you enjoyed the video :)
Great video, I’m doing HTML at my work, no experience but I’m learning to edit our pro source page, but I’m thinking about UX design though. I love UI stuff. 😊
Loved your video and the breakdown of your UX/product design journey 😍 I also transitioned to UX in 2020 but had a different path from my architectural engineering background 👋🏻
Thanks awesome :) lots of people transition from different career path. My coworker transition from environmental engineering into UX
Thank you for sharing your experience. I appreciate it so much. I will watch more of your videos.
Thank you for watching!
Thank you for sharing your experience! It helps me a lot on my journey become a UX designer.
Thanks for watching!! 😊
This video really inspired me... Thank you for sharing your journey.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a great story! I recall the early days when @chunbuns first launched her RUclips channel. I want to wish you all the best in your new channel and your journey in the world of product designer. 🤠
Thank you so much! I used to watch her too when I was still in graphic design aspiring to be in this field 🥺
super motivating to watch! although im not un UX UI, it's super fascinating to learn about other industries and roles like this 😄
I love the video!!! this is so interesting
i love these videos thank you !
Thank you! 😊
thank you! you really really reeeeeallllly helped me! bless you!
Yay!! Good luck :)
Thank you Helen it was REALLY helpfull ❤
Love to help! thanks for watching :)
Hi Helen, thank you for all your sharing about the journey. I'm 30yrs old right now and trying to change my career path from Digital Marketing to an UXUI Designer. But I'm not sure if I could have my first dream job at this career. Could you please share more about the challenges to get the job when we're over 30s. Glad to be hearing from you soon =)
That's amazing, I'm trying to find a job as a Product designer after doing a boot camp in UI/UX but have been finding it so hard to find a role remotely
Thank you for a great insight into how you got a start! It's very inspiring :)
I would love to see a video in real time, with no edits of how you design a UI in figma from start to finish. Showing the keybindings pressed also would be great in the video for us newbies :)
that's a good idea! I also am still learning alot about figma :)
@@helen_melen That's awesome! That could make great content to follow along with if there's some problem solving! :)
thank you so much for this video ❤
Of course!! :)
You're younger than me (I'm coming to my design realisations a bit late, heh) -- but your feelings and interests are very similar to mine! The whole being good at math, but also needing to be creative -- it's so strange that as a society people often assume that those two things aren't compatible.
Phenomenal! Very detailed and no bullshit describing your your path. What did your first 30-90 days looks like on the job since this was all new ? You were using a concept project to gain your experience versus using an actual company’s project .
My first 30-90 basically learned the ways of working. The processes on how people at my job designed and then slowly transitioning to actual company project
ConU and Dawson graduate here 🙋🏽♀️🙌🏽! Thanks for the tips and transparency.
Love seeing a Montrealer here!!
“Making this money ☝🏽” had me cracking up! 😂💖
hell yaa lool
This video is so helpful ty. Id love to see a what a workdays like
I actually have some on my channel! check it out if you want :)
I started Graphic Design in High School and did more self-learning afterwards. After a course, it showed different pathways and that's how I learned about UX/UI design. I know Graphic Design helps greatly with switching into this field, and by now I've taken and finished several UX Courses. I don't have experience in the job field other than a few years ago, I completed a couple client projects in my senior year and a short internship. I don't know what should really be the best way to stand out to internships or what my next move should be.
Any advice would be great.
Love your video by the way. :)
Thank you!
I suggest always having a portfolio ready for your internships and be thorough in explaining your process within your portfolio. If you want to take it a step further, try finding recruiters or design manager on linkedin and sending them a message that you’re interested in an internship or maybe just connecting. If there are positions open up they can possibly contact you. I think it can help having a linkedin and staying connected and networking as well
Hope that helps :)
Thank you so much for this! I graduated the same year as you lol. Hearing your path is insightful to us out here wondering if we need a bootcamp or generally wondering how to approach UX. I am a graphic designer but by no means a UX expert, but I think I certainly could build off of my skills in a similar way and continue learning via LinkedIn classes…it may not be much but it’s better than no experience and may help inform me of the next steps. I really appreciated you talked about the application process and observing the pathways of established UX designers in the field.
always happy to share! thank you for watching!! :)
em cảm ơn chị
Wow that's great and i join started my career as a product designer 🎉🎉❤❤ and i just subscribed to your channel 😊
Thank you for your support!
your video so so inspiring thank you for sharing
thank you for watching :)
hello nice vid, just wondering how did you portfolios to reference from? and if you collated them put them in a google doc or anything thanks
Thank you for this video! Inspiring!
If you can someday show and tell us about your first portfolio for UI/UX job? That would be very useful😃thanks☀️
thanks for watching :)
& noted for a future video!
I like the way you said "five hundred" when discussing bootcamp costs
Literally, at this point thats my situation. Like you said YOU NEVER KNOW. I also have coding experience. I just finished a Bootcamp in UXUI. Wow what a great video Thank you so much for this insight. It was meant for me to see this. Thank you
PS What roadmap did you take for the product design.
Thank you
so inspiring
Loved this video!! I was wondering if you have any advice in getting to an agency job as a self taught designer? As a self taught graphic designer, what exactly do you put on your resume to get hired.... Other than listing "proficient in Adobe suite, etc." I have a degree in something completely different than design (in education), so how do I get employers to look at me without formal education in design? I am worried that even before getting to the portfolio, they would just skip you because the resume wouldn't have formal design education on it.
Would really appreciate some insight into this, thank you!!❤
I wasn't a self taught graphic designer, I actually went to school for it but I think what helped me get my first graphic design job was the graphic design internship I've done which demonstrated some minor experience. I would maybe suggest to look for junior graphic design role or try getting an internship. Most jobs require some experience before applying unless it's a junior role.
Oh thank you! I'll consider that!@@helen_melen
Your amazing! 😊 I just wanted to say real quick haha you said maths it’s funny in the U.S. people say Math haha I just thought it was funny the difference 😊 I feel like your me I’m a Network Engineer now, I started my own web design agency couple years ago on top and also worked as a software developer at SpaceX 😅 I have web design skills and trying to build my portfolio(restarting) so I guess I’ll give myself 2 weeks max lot of work but let’s do it 💪
Thank you and good luck!! 😊
Amazing content!!!
Thanks Phil 😁
HAHAHA tkt
Hi Helen would it be possible for you to share that four stage interview process with us it would be greatly appreciated
ouu that can be an interesting video
Do you think having a coding bootcamp background helped a lot on your UX/UI job application? Great videos btw :)
Thank you! :)
Tbh i think it's great conversation starter during interviews but I really don't think my coding bootcamp helped me get my current job. I even asked the people who've interview me and that wasn't a criteria for them to hire me
really good and interesting!! idk what i want to do with my life rn (hs) and this rlly made me consider ui since ive always been doing it since i was a kid asdjsjsd
do ittt!!! get into it, i really recommend if you enjoy designing
the job market is terrible nowadays :((( does anybody have any advice for people looking for ux design jobs now?
Nice way of talking ❤
I also started off wanting to do graphic design for a fashion company too!! But Now im interested in doing product design for a fashion company. Im intrested to know if you're still working for a fashion related company or something else?
Hi! Awesome to hear :) No i actually left the fashion industry LOL i mentally couldn’t keep up it was too stressful. I am actually in the tech industry now
@@helen_melen Lmaoo i feel you im actually changing my desired industry to something more tech related . way more opportunity with jobs i feel x
Without huge prior experience (eg by having DEEP graphic design knowledge and additionally also analytical thinking) the 2 mo timeline is NOT possible.
Just got into your channel, i just want to know, without being intrusive, how much can a UX/UI designer make entry level. Thank you
Entry levels can vary. In mtl, about 50k-75k CAD. This is based off of the conversation I’ve had with colleagues. I personally got 70k CAD when i first joined the industry. Hope that helps! :)
1:22 don't think there's a single American who needed to hear that lol. Jokes aside, very insightful video!
can you still get an internship even though you already have a bachelor's degree?
I definitely think you still can, unless the company is super strict with students only but i think it’s still a possibility to help get more experience
youre so pretty
In your field, do you design only websites?
We also do apps!
I would love to have a meeting together 🙂
can i ask if they required you to speak french?
no because my company is a global company so we mainly communicate in english
11,500?! You can get a Bachelor's AND a Master's in Europe for that price 😲
Yes CAD for the bootcamp 😭
But you said you have no degree but you graduated in graphic design...?
I don’t have a bachelor degree but i have a DEC degree in graphic design
Lips tho. And now the market is over crowded by designers
you say on the title no degree but you have graphic design degree
I never received a bachelors in graphic design or UX UI design. I only have a DEC in graphic design.
can i know your lipstick information haha !
hey! It's LA girl lipstick in the color snuggle :)
So with all your education you actually did not become a ux designer in 2 months. Very misleading.
Hi! Just to clarify I had no formal education in UX and UI classes. I did for sure have the coding bootcamp certificate and graphic design cegep degree that could have increase my chances of getting the job. But I did finish my certificate for coding in May and landed the job in July!
