Lucille Ball was not an easy person to interview unlike Desi Arnaz who was an open book. Both dynamite though, amazingly interesting people, with incredible lives. Leave it to mr Dick Cavett to always come through and turn any difficult interview into a pleasant time.
Interesting comments on her body language and demeanor. I took it the whole time as somebody that has built a tough exterior image because of, well, life, but who is actually quite sensitive, which she then admits. Cavett recognized that and drew it out of her. She's proud and guarded, not rude or uncaring. Just my opinion.
Yes a little bit she’s leaning on the other side, but not facing away. It the camera angle too, when they focus on her but when you see the two of them in front shot, they’re aligned. Also when you watch the full interview of this she’s moving around a lot and also is having heat issues with her coat feathers etc😂 An absolute legend ❤❤ A powerful woman She liked dick. She was also promoting her new project all day she mentions that in another clip
I was a HUGE fan of Lucille Ball and thought she was incredibly talented. However, she was never herself during interviews because she was too "aware" of herself. The only time she could let go of her self-awareness, was when she was in front of the camera - as Lucy Ricardo.
Actually, pretty much everyone who worked with her, and knew her said that she was nothing like the Lucy character, even her own children said this. Lucy Ricardo was actually basically the opposite of the real life Lucy.
@@darreylhenderson702 Yes, you're absolutely right, Lucille Ball was the complete polar opposite of Lucy Ricardo. Which is why she could let go of her self-awareness "behind" the character. But in a public situation such as an interview, not so much.
I do remember reading that Desi told her NOT to do tv interviews when they were doing I Love Lucy - because her real nature was the opposite of Lucy Ricardo, and her voice was lower than that of her tv persona. However, years later when she did to tv interviews - so much criticism (just as Desi had warned). However, I remember someone commenting how rude and off putting she was with Johnny Carson, for example. They were very good friends and I saw just the opposite when she was on his show.
She was quite simply uncomfortable. Other than that I think she did the best shr could. Not sure any of us wouldnt feel self conscious. So lets not critisize people. She w as only human and I loved her

Oh, she could rude. In some circles Ms. Ball was known to treat some people very poorly, particularly anyone in a service occupation--- flight attendants, waiters, bell boys. It's ridiculous how someone so talented and beloved can be cold and dismissive to others, acting as if they're beneath her. I admire and respect Ball (she and Desi made _huge_ strides in television entertainment in their heyday, and at Desilu she basically saved Star Trek from getting the axe early in its run), but don't like her because I have heard too many anecdotes about how crummy she could treat folks.

How about just enjoying the clip? Maybe she was ill and didn’t want to spread germs. Jeez.

She always seemed so hard and bitter in interviews.
Not bitter, just exhausted. She was in the middle of a multi-city national tour promoting Mame when she had to also do this show. Sleep deprived.
Bitter about what? It just always seemed to me that she wasn't very comfortable doing them and didn't enjoy doing them.
She had a lot of tragedy in her life
