It's both, a blessing and a curse. When it's good, it's good, but when it's bad, it's really bad. As parents go, we want to protect our kids and be proud of them. But when ur famous, ur kid makes a mistake, the whole world knows about it. And not in a good way. I'm very happy to be a nobody. No pressure or expectations. I got to be me. ❤❤❤❤
It may help him to realize those of us who wasn't brought up in Hollywood faced the same challenges. It was the pitfall of growing up in the era we did.
True that! Children were not the precious darlings of today. They were more like second class citizens. There is an episode in "Mad Men" where little Sally puts the dry cleaning bag over her head and is scolded by her mother for throwing the dry cleaning on the floor. Parents of the boomer generation had hard lives. They went through the depression as kids and many were adopted out to be workers on other people's farms. Emotions were buried and people taught their children how to survive. May seem tough to some, however, I fear for the younger generations who are coddled and have little ability to solve problems or become self reliant.

Desi Sr, was known first and foremost for being a philanderer. I was routinely made aware of this every time I mentioned the show "I love Lucy" which was on TV every day that I got home from kindergarten 1968. It was well known.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but Lucy used her looks and sleeping around to get into Hollwood, she was just another Company hoe, money does that to people, they will do anything to get it.
It is impossible for anyone who wasn't alive during the Lucy years to comprehend how beloved that family was to us fans who tuned-in every week to see them. It is impossible to understand the giddiness and warmth of "the Beav." Or the endearing charm of Harriett & Ozzie and the Nelson sons, especially THAT son we gay kids most wanted to get undressed with. Boy, could Ricky stroke his guitar. Like wild dogs, we lapped it up. These and similar family-shows of that day, taught us about families, and showed us how dis-functional and dis-appointing our own families were. That was a double-edged sword. TV was real, our lives were lacking. We didn't cozy to the cognitive dissonance we were experiencing; the term hadn't been installed yet in America's plumbing. You had to be there to comprehend the exuberance of being alive: Elvis on Ed Sullivan (who?), John-Paul-George-Ringo on Ed Sullivan, Diana slug Mary on Motown 25, the night Michael walked backwards. Didn't he? Trust me on this, the truly Magic Moment you un-borns missed out on, and can never/ever have, is spending Saturday evenings with Bob and Carol and Ted and Eunice, and MTM, and Emily, and Sueann and Lou, and Mama, oh God, Mama, the absolute Summit of Saturday. Tragic-Magic, when Mama told Eunice that her pilot light had gone out, in the windmills of your mind. "Sorry." Carol never/ever broke, but that night we saw TV History being made. I still quote to the clouds (no person alive would get it), Eunice's alter ego having the last laugh: "THAT'S a good one Mama." Maybe the pinnacle of peeing-in-your-pants Saturday, was that time Scarlot saw something in the window and she just had to have it. Oh good gawd, not the curtain rod. While I'm stoping by those woods, I will never forget bouncing off the walls for three hours, the night, finally, when Emily turned on the light, to see Bob. Zenith!!! JHC!!! TV never got better than that one, Mama. THAT was my absolute biggest summit of Magic. We Booms were happier to be at home with OUR true "friends" than out on the towne with un-true ones. Saturday Night, alive, Home Alone, because that's where our hearts were. Imagine, a night of love, a fest, every Saturday, and in repeats. Tacky, right? That would never happen in today's climate. That was the last of Collective, a once-in-a-lifetime Time that can never be again. Kids, we Booms had Bogie & Becall, Bette Davis' Eyes, Mick and Gilda, and real-life "Saturday Night Fevers." Occasionally, we Boomers even had "Glad to be Alive" moments, in the Sun. We all stopped by Sam's Tavern for a beer, or Archie's Bunker's Place for an argument, and we were better people for it.
- Desi Arnaz was a high stakes gambler Lucy was not - she was frugal; that's why they kept separate bank accounts and she had 40 million plus when she died and Desi had about 20million.
Iconic episode. You had quite the iconic group from an iconic time in television history. Appreciate your iconic time in producing this iconic piece. You really do an iconic job.
I remember hearing Lucie Arnaz and Desi Jr. in an interview speaking about their nanny, an African American woman. She was Lucille Ball’s right-hand and took care of the children like her own. Lucie Arnaz said that as far as their mother was concerned, leaving her kids with this woman was as good as if Lucille herself was with them. She trusted this woman completely. Lucie Arnaz stated that this woman really filled the void in her and her brother’s lives due to their parents’ long absences at the studio. Lucie Arnaz also said that her parents preferred to be at the studio working and interacting with other people on the set because it was a welcomed distraction from home life which was full of tension and arguments about Desi’s infidelities. I wish I could remember the nanny’s name. If anyone knows this woman’s name, please leave a reply.
@@elizabethmchenry3102 She was also the live-in housekeeper from what I understand. She became like family. So I’m sure Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Sr. took care of her also and she retired well.
@@madeleine9907 You are correct! Her full name is Lucie Desiree Arnaz. Thank you. If you find out the name of the nanny, please leave her name in the replies.
I can't believe all the judgment going on here by people that didn't even know Lucy and Desi. They hear one interview by one of the children and now they're authorities. Lucy came from a very humble background with much hardship. Desi came from a very privileged background which also embraced and encouraged machismo. Lucy was always waiting for the floor to fall out from extensive reading of her biographies. She found such fulfillment in her career and also felt that it was the security for her family. Desi responded to the stress of business management by drinking... Excessively. He also was well documented womanizing around Hollywood and Lucille lived with that shame for a long time . When Desi's addictions grew to the point of embarrassment for his family and his Hollywood status along with the womanizing... Lucy had to let go of the love of her life. No one here should pass judgment unless you walked in their shoes. Desi and Lucy remained connected till the end of Desi's life. One of his last phone calls was with Lucy where they professed their enduring love and understanding to each other. My only complaint with this docu is putting pictures in of Keith Tribideau as being representative of young Desi Jr. He had issues with being in Keith's shadow for most of his childhood and to continue that lack of research here, is insulting to the person this documentary was supposed to be about.
I think a couple of the pictures of "little Desi Jr." that were actually of the actor who played "little Ricky Ricardo" from I Love Lucy, Keith Thibodeaux.
Divorce between a mother and father is harder on the children more than the spouses. Desi Jr. was only 7 when his parents divorced. On the clip 6:10. that is Keith Thibodeux on the drums. Not Desi Jr. Who never played Little Ricky on I Love Lucy.
Not true when you were truly in love it's harder on the spouse, I had a heart attack when my husband divorced me but Jesus never left me, He saw me through, praise HIS DEAR NAME.
Once when Lucille Ball was on tv, my dad called her a red-headed idiot. I got the feeling that he didn't like stupid women, however i remember thinking that it's all just an act with her, she's actually a very smart woman. My dad was WAY off base for calling her that. 🇦🇺😊
Re: Lucille Ball--a story appeared when Lucy and Jack Benny were rehearsing for a t.v. show. At one point Jack Benny stopped to exclaim "Will somebody tell Lucy that she got the job?"
Memory. My memories say Kim was suicidal and a drug addicted person which was grossly exaggerated when she was doing a say all expose. Later a documentary made Desi into the philandering cheat and drunk while Lucy was made into a paranoid psychopath. The end.
@@annettehenry7 THE BRADY BUNCH>>>>Davy Jones did an episode IN 1971 called 'GETTING DAVY JONES''....Desi Jr, in 1970....the episode was called 'THE POSSIBLE DREAM'
desi arnaz sr. was kind of a genius. he was from cuban upper class and could do complex math in his head (very important for contracts with percentages etc.) here were his ideas: he got them to film i love lucy (instead of kinescope) and paid for it but insisted they own the show (made them a fortune later). he hired the best cameraman in the movies to film their show and that guy invented the three camera sitcom method still used today. he hired vivian vance after seeing her in a play by himself. he hired william frawley beause frawley and vance didn't like each other and he thought that would make fred's zingers more funny and it did. he got the writers for the show (the real stars) and came out before every show and warmed up the audience. he came to lucy at the height of their success and told her RKO was for sale and they could buy it and have their own studio, OR they could take what they had and retire and try to live peacefully and enjoy their kids. Lucille said, "Buy it." He formed DESILU and had so many hits going at once it gave him ulcers. for example, he'd read a book called, "the untouchables" about eliott ness chasing al capone and thought it would make a great show. the andy griffith show was filmed at desilu. he also drank a lot and thought in the old cuban terms--your wife is married, you're not. that said, the kids said when he came home, he was home, he spent time with his kids, played with them, took them for nature walks, talked about god. lucille was just on the phone talking work all the time.
Thank you, really helped. She was a tad hypocritical about a commentator "get your hands off of her" during a seminar thing at ucla. But then i noted her creepy comebacks to a couple guys. Or just how shed like treat different people more sternly or stoicly based on their appearance or gender. Gave me bad memories of some crappy teachers from grade school. Not that i think your input was meant to put her in negative light. It seemed most genuine explanation of her and him with what little I knew of them. Also , her interactions made me wonder if desi jr maybe was a little beaten down by her intentionally or unintentionally. She did say they called her lucille "Balls". Maybe she behaved harshly with the poor guy and mama's so important to a son's emotional sttability
Most people dont thst Lucy had a life before her comedy series. Her career began as an "also starred" woman in a "Three Stooges" short. She graduated to starring in dramatic film noir films, in which she excelled.
This happens in many families, not just Hollywood stars. Having parents absent and a child left to their own devices is very common especially starting in the 60's. Back then your parents would have been born depression era which is a completely different work ethic. Parents really expected their children to do what they were told, study hard, etc. just like they did. But in their childhood what was expected had vanished by the time they parented. They just assumed they'd parent like their parents did, sans the true struggles(depression, war) that didn't really exist in 60's childhood life. Many kids growing up in the suburbs didn't really have the kind of support they needed and too many things to distract them, TV, drugs, etc. Which is why you ended up with the 60's hippie era and everyone acting out. Far different era Jr grew up in and he was not alone. Lucy and Desi like a lot of 60's parents had no clue how to parent in this new age.
I think it is difficult to have very successful parents in any profession the parents are so dedicated to they're careers there is little time left for children.
Desi Arnaz Jr. grew up to be a very deep thinker. He’s a Christian. Very knowledgeable about religion, spirituality, and philosophy. I love to hear him speak on these topics. He has so much more to say about life and experience than I ever heard his parents speak about. Maybe Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Sr. were more guarded about what they said because they were in the spotlight. Or maybe they just weren’t the deep thinkers that their son turned out to be. Anyway, I’m glad Desi Jr. was able to find a path for himself and had children and a stable marriage of his own. I wish him the best. ❤🙏
@@tommieswearingen4501 Yes, it is wonderful that he became a person of faith in spite of all the struggles he had growing up as the child of two icons of the entertainment world.
I know this about him too. He was very reflective and on a spiritual healing path. I worked with an author who was his best friend...I so enjoyed all his stories of Desi, Jr and Lucille Ball.
Desi Jr. may have had a "miserable life" but he certainly accomplished a great deal in different fields too: acting, popular music (his rock band), producing, etc. His performance in "Red Sky at Morning" was memorable.
Very hard without a stable surrogate adult family member to be there as a constant support and reminder of the love their parents have for them which is often , but not always the truth in life! 😊
I was waiting for you to cover his part in the movie, "Mambo Kings" where he perfectly portrayed his father Desi Arnez Sr. It helped that he was the spitting image of his dad and could sound exactly like him. The movie is highly underrated. Incredible musical performances. The lead actors included Antonio Banderas, Armand Asante, Cathy Moriarty, with world famous musicians Tito Puente & Celia Cruz. Shame on you for not mentioning it. Desi's role was integral to the story.
I just can't feel sorry for someone who was probably given a lot . I'm almost his age and grew up with a mother who was extremely abusive and my dad who never knew because he worked so much to take care of his kids and wife. But we all got passed it and learned to be hard workers and be better and more loving parents. We made choices not to abuse drugs, maybe he should've tried that instead of whining about his really bad childhood. I'm sure he's never had to work in his life and is still enjoying what his parents worked so hard for.
Lucy stated they had a great time on the I Love Lucy set. She gave Desi credit for the show's success. He was a good businessman, and talented. His book "A Book" is worthwhile reading. He did mention his philandering stating Lucy "should have known those picadillos meant nothing." Lucy may have been abrasive, and self promoting, but Desi was guilty of damaging the marriage. She said in later years If she had to do it over, she wouldn't have stayed with a wayward husband. She seemed to love her kids. I doubt Desi Jr had much to lament.
Latin men in those times seemed to believe it was ok to have someone on the side. I worked in Italy in 1979 and all the Italian male business owners had mistresses they’d see during “siesta”. Go home to their wives and families at 7. Mistresses from 12-3.
I think it’s reasonable to assume that being the child of famous actors has its perks. On the other hand, absentee parents are not really parents at all. I’d guess it’s like being a very wealthy orphan. Having a loving nanny would help one develop a sense of self-worth. But it’s a tough way to live when your parents only see you occasionally & you have to be on your best behavior, while feeling hurt inside.
It was well known that Lucy was a terrible mother, never making time for her children. All she ever wanted was to be working in show business, these facts are directly from her own daughter, Lucie Arnaz. So sad that she made us all laugh, when her kids were so sad at home.
Wow, what a scathing commentary. If you are a close family member, shame on you. If not then you honestly do not know anything about a family’s dynamics unless you are part of it.
I have read so much about Lucy and I’ve collected many books about her in my younger years. Yes, you’re correct she was definitely obsessed with her work and her words on a talk show I believe with the Kavat is that she really was only happy when she was working. I would imagine her kids did have an absentee bother at times and of course Desi when he was not working, he blew off his stress by boating, running around and drinking. The thing that they created to keep them together, the I Love Lucy show was in the end not enough, and it ended up separating them. By the way, Desi Senior said his name is pronounced “Des see”, not Dez zee to those that don’t know.
Typo- when Lucy What is on the Dick Cavett show She said the times she was working when she was the happiest…. You could tell the way she spoke that was her love in life. Working.
When "The I love Lucy" was suggested to Lucy. She insisted that her real life husband play her husband on the show. The executives were reluctant but gave in. I'm glad Desi Jr. got his act together and everything came out all right. Because that's not the way it worked with lots of kids I knew who went in the direction he went in. I'm in my 70s.
I’ll never understand these rich kids 😂 my mother would not feed me as a punishment to the point I had to eat the cat’s food. Poor dude, what a horrible childhood 😂 get over it. You wouldn’t be who or where you are if not for your parents. Be grateful. I may have had a shitty childhood but I never forget some have had it worse.
Lana turner’s daughter was raised with a lot of money, did that prevent her from being rape at a young age by one of her stepfathers? No, Jayne Mansfield oldest daughter was raised with a lot of money, did that stop her mothers boyfriend from physically assaulting her? No. Being rich dose not prevent painful or terrible thing from happening to you.
I think children of celebrities have to deal with unique situations in life... they are constantly in the limelight, never really enjoying any privacy. It seems that would be very difficult to deal with and accept when growing up.
Desi Jr. did not move to Boulder Colorado. He and Amy moved to Boulder City Nevada, just a short drive from Las Vegas Nevada where they operated their own dance studio and theatre. Amy graduated High School in Las Vegas Nevada.
I watched him on his mother's show, which he co-starred with his sister Lucy the first season. But I really enjoyed his show in the 80's called Automan along with Chuck Wagner as the title character. He is a very talented man for certain.
I loved Lucy & Ricky & still watch them today if they are on.. They were a great couple & a great actor & a great actress. I rhink its easier for them becuz they have famous parents.
Narrator, it is so great watching an informative Video and not have to listen through horrible background MUSIC. Thank you, hi from Pompano Beach, Florida 🦩 🌴
I didn't realize that for most of my life they were divorced. I only watched I Love Lucy in syndication. By the time I was old enough to see it, its first run was likely finished for 10 years
I believe that any child of mega stars is almost impossible to find normality. As a older person now, nothing surprises me dealing with life's challenges.
My ex-girlfriend was in the Lucy and Lucille Ball show I Love Lucy all of them and she read all the books that anybody would write on the topic including all the cast members in anybody associated with the show. Consensus of all that according to my girlfriend she was a typical fiery nutty redhead and he couldn't keep it in his pants. That's what caused the divorce😮
Gee poor guy.I hope he knows it could have been So much worse!I would love to have lived his life. But u guess if ur born into it We don’t understand,I know compared to my up bringing His life was great
By the time the I Love Lucy evolved till they went to Connecticut they couldn't stand each other. Watch those episodes they're not even standing on the same side of the set and they would leave from opposite directions as soon as the scene was over😢
6:03 That is NOT Desi Arnaz Jr. That is the actor who played Ricky in I LOVE LUCY. I think he became good friends with Desi though. He got the part because he was so good on the drums.
It’s difficult being a child of two famous people! At least he had a sister who is going through the same things that he was going through! It’s even harder to cope when your parents decided to name both you and your sister after them! So there’s bound to be a comparisons! Thank God, the Desi, licked his drug problem and failed relationships by getting married to a down to earth woman. I am moving out of Beverly Hills! I’m so sorry that he lost his best friend when his wife died. Hopefully they’re remembrances of a stable and loving relationship can help him endure and keep on a straight path from now until the rest of his life.
I'm not defending anything Desi Sr did that led to the breakup of his marriage. Even if Lucy wasn't the best mother and wife and had a temper and didn't have a particularly motherly temperament and at times may have put her career ahead of her family, (although I don't think she realized any of these things except her temper), she still was justified in ultimately divorcing a man who was drinking heavily and was by all accounts a pretty scary drunk and who also had been cheating on her regularly pretty much their entire marriage, thinking as long as it was just physical and not emotional it didn't count as real cheating. And Lucy went out of her way over and over again to try to make things work with Desi Sr. Anyway, in spite of all of these weaknesses, the one thing that really struck me watching this was how in every single picture Desi Sr you can tell just from his look that he absolutely adores both of his kids. In the early episode, (especially Season 3), you can also tell from the looks Desi gives Lucy at times when she is not looking that he absolutely adores her as well. Towards the end those looks go away, but they were definitely there for awhile. I know that's not what this video is about, and like I said that one thing doesn't completely make up for the drinking and cheating, and I'm sure he also occasionally put career ahead of family, but there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that his love for his children and wife was absolutely real whatever else may have been going on.

@@betsyross3963 That may be true, but I personally believe that was basically to save Lucy from having to be the one to do it. Maybe I’m wrong. And by the end they both definitely were miserable and wanted out. But somehow I suspect that no matter who actually filed the paperwork the divorce was absolutely a mutual decision.
Desi Arnaz Jr is just a few months older than I, but I grew up in a very poor family, but today I wouldn't trade lives with him, these Show Biz people in most cases have a really bad life, no thanks.
No one in that era could ever hope to enjoy the same level of success that his parents had. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Bing Crosby all had children who lived their lives away from the spotlight. Some were able to make a living as talent agents, attorneys, directors, cinematographers or other jobs within the industry but not many did. Just because we never hear from them doesn't mean they did not have rewarding lives.
People are fallible & we all have disappointment in our lives. My mother was definitely not all I wanted in a mother, however I also know that I was certainly not what she expected or wanted in a daughter.
His dad was smart and successful, but also had an alcohol problem. Desi, Jr. had the genetic predisposition and combined with his own success and early fame it was not surprising that he ran into trouble. He got the help he needed and straightened his life out. Sadly, his wife Amy died in 2015 and his granddaughter died a few years later.
Why don't you get actual pictures of Desi Arnaz as a kid those pictures of the actor who played him drumming or not Desi Arnaz. There's one episode is there an Italy I believe on the European tour Lucy is sad because it's Little Ricky's birthday she gets all the local kids to come have a birthday four little Ricky and calls them on the phone one of those little kids is Desi Arnaz Junior. I believe the only time he was on the show maybe once more
Lucille Ball commented that she could “act funny,” but that she didn’t “think funny.” She said she could never have thought of the scripts for the I Love Lucy show. She did not have a sense of humor like that of her own. But she was able to bring life to the character of Lucy by acting. I say this in contrast to Ellen Degeneres who is able to act in comedies as well as have a standup act and was spontaneously funny in her interactions with the guests on her show. Lucille Ball did not have that kind of sense of humor. Unless she was acting for comedic purposes, she was a very serious, humorless type of person.
@5:57 I can't swear to it but I don't think that is Desi Jr. That is the actor who played Ricky Jr on I Love Lucy. Keith Thibodeaux, also known as Richard Keith, is an American actor and musician, best known for playing Little Ricky on the television sitcoms I Love Lucy. Pretty sure @6:09 is too. You see him again on The Andy Griffith show as Opie's friend Johnny Paul.
I think Desi had a problem with the little guy who played him and played the cute little drums. Its called jealousy. Than divorce always leaves kids feeling abandoned. Sad but true. And i love how the kids want to be famous but for themselves 🤣 His life didn't sound that bad though. His drugs is because he was curious and wanted to experiment getting high.
* Yet Keith as well as the other lads who portrayed Little Ricky never got name recognition in show's credits. This led to false urban legend that Desi Jr. was Little Ricky. 🤔
A great article. But you might want to correct. The picture you have of him as a child drumming is not him, but rather a picture of Keith Thibodeaux (actor) who played little Ricky on I Love Lucy.
ooops, the clips at about 6:00 are of Little Ricky (Keith Thibodaux), not Desi Jr, even though the narrator is talking about Desi Jr playing drums...haha
I'll never forget the story that still circulates today, about Lucille throwing hot coffee on a flight attendant which scolded her with severe burns . She was later banned from American because of this. I love her, always have, but sad that she behaved like this . That was one of many things she did lol.
With all these pictures did anyone else notice Lucy was always holding her son and Desi was always holding his daughter. That’s a question for thought.

Please come back to reality ): E-Gad!!! @@JackMason-oq8lf

I hope that she was paid well for having to take care of them 24/7

Who never played Little Ricky on I Love Lucy.

desi arnaz sr. was kind of a genius. he was from cuban upper class and could do complex math in his head (very important for contracts with percentages etc.) here were his ideas: he got them to film i love lucy (instead of kinescope) and paid for it but insisted they own the show (made them a fortune later). he hired the best cameraman in the movies to film their show and that guy invented the three camera sitcom method still used today. he hired vivian vance after seeing her in a play by himself. he hired william frawley beause frawley and vance didn't like each other and he thought that would make fred's zingers more funny and it did. he got the writers for the show (the real stars) and came out before every show and warmed up the audience. he came to lucy at the height of their success and told her RKO was for sale and they could buy it and have their own studio, OR they could take what they had and retire and try to live peacefully and enjoy their kids.
Lucille Ball was a tough hard woman BUT she had a miserable philandering Man who broke her heart over and over !

Most people dont thst Lucy had a life before her comedy series. Her career began as an "also starred" woman in a "Three Stooges" short. She graduated to starring in dramatic film noir films, in which she excelled.
Lucy also appeared as a dancer in a few chorus lines in some old black and white musical movies.
It depends on how they’re raised and how they handle the fame once they get older having famous parents isn’t always easy

He was too busy saying the word icon and iconic.
Title is dead wrong. Desi Jr. had a wonderful life. His lovely sister was and will always be, his anchor in life.

Lucy for the divorce
@@betsyross3963 That may be true, but I personally believe that was basically to save Lucy from having to be the one to do it. Maybe I’m wrong. And by the end they both definitely were miserable and wanted out. But somehow I suspect that no matter who actually filed the paperwork the divorce was absolutely a mutual decision.

It's not equivalent. She needed to be more mature than you.
His dad was smart and successful, but also had an alcohol problem.
So what was so miserable about his life?

I think Desi had a problem with the little guy who played him and played the cute little drums. Its called jealousy. Than divorce always leaves kids feeling abandoned. Sad but true. And i love how the kids want to be famous but for themselves 🤣 His life didn't sound that bad though. His drugs is because he was curious and wanted to experiment getting high.

She was later banned from American because of this. I love her, always have, but sad that she behaved like this . That was one of many things she did lol.
I have learned that this was not a true story and Lucy was not not banned from American Airlines.
Great pictures
With all these pictures did anyone else notice Lucy was always holding her son and Desi was always holding his daughter. That’s a question for thought.
Desi Jr looks like his father.
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
Do you have this comment on speed dial. You say the same thing over and over. Try to be a little more original!!
@billmarch7409 have a good night sir!
How many times do we have to hear the word
That picture of a little boy playing the drums was not Desi Arnaz Jr. It was the child actor who played Little Ricky on "I Love Lucy"
The little boy photos on drums isn’t Desi Jr but the little actor playing little Ricky.
