Zombies was not dying before mob came along. As a longtime zombie player, I enjoyed all maps before mob came into the picture. Honestly, the game has gotten very carried away with itself now. To get set up and just have a simple, good game of zombies, you have a giant “to do list”. Easter eggs used to be secret and only the hard core players knew about it. Now, the “Easter egg” is shoved down your throat and is made obvious that it is in the game. I miss WAW-BO2. That was peak zombies in my humble opinion.
it was dying. people hated tranzit and die rise. Mob, Buried, and Origins definitely saved zombies and started the explosion of popularity for black ops 3 zombies
@@dabear7822no it wasnt You seriously underestimate how popular tranzit was Zombies was big during tranzit days Yes many didnt like it but much more did enjoy it Die rise wasnt well received even tho its a decent map But zombies still wasnt dying Most people were just playing tranzit town and Nuketown And some even played die rise

I'm in the "shadows of evil is by far the best and most polished zombies map we may ever recieve" camp. My first game I remember hitting the chalice to transform into monster form and being dumb excited to see a system from what was my favorite map before then, Mob, be realized in a form that I personally just find more comfortable to use. The visual design and color selection of deep passionate reds, inviting yet haunting yellows, and the regal purples. The neon signage slewn throughout so much of the town has a semi-retro vibe that's intoxicating. The little jazz swing jingle that plays when entering the map. I might be an outlier but truly there's no map more addicting to be than Shadows. Well maybe Mauer but that's just because Mauer is the ultimate head popping map.
I love die rise too lol. It really was fun if you just learned the map. After a couple play throughs I wasn’t dying from fall damage, I knew how to set up shortcuts with the trample steam, and when you are traveling mid round, waiting for the elevators becomes really fun because you have to hold out until you can be saved.
Honestly, in retrospect, I personally never gave it a fair shot. It was too different to the norm. I was “offended” with it, if you will. And every time I played it its like a self fulfilling prophecy, like “Ahaaa, you see this shit?! This is why I don’t like it” instead of embracing change and trying to enjoy it for what it is (and isn’t).

I bought the season pass and hated die rise, maybe played it 10 times total of my 1000s of hours on BO2, luckily I was busy grinding to master 1 on league play (which i hit btw) . Then they just started dropping banger after banger on zombies, got a world record solo on mob of the dead but it got taken an hour later, was also one of the first groups to find the easter egg on buried. This was one of the best times of my life, thanks for making this video :)

I really don't think transit is "widely considered" to be bad. I can't find one person IRL who had BO2 and holds this opinion. It really feels like the online community has been lost in the issues and doesn't see public perception outside of the niche.
Art direction is as bad as nacht from waw, open world map, fog so thick you can't see anything, a trolley that drives away( basically origins tank but worse) . If the art direction was good, this is the main reason town is loved
I'd say the opposite, I've never met someone who played it at launch and didn't hate it. I played it with a group of friends at launch, they hated it. Then I moved halfway around the world, made some new friends, asked if they played Zombies and they all said they loved BO1 but hate Tranzit
definitely played shadows of evil more since my friends i played with didn’t have the season pass. i loved the map and it honestly might be my favorite oat
I remember when bo3 came out, my friends and I where always on the giant, we tried shadows on release, but kept getting our asses kicked, struggling to open pack a punch most games. But after a like a month we finally started to actually learn the map and where all the parts are, and ever since then it has been a top 5 map
Here’s a trick for margwas on shadows of evil. When they spawn in they do an animation where all of their mouths are open. I used a shotgun or any high velocity/damage weapon and spam it when they’re in that spawn animation, destroys them in like 3 seconds.
People just do not understand the amount of personality these older zombies maps had. Buildables, side quests, unique map features, new exclusive enemy types, stellar atmosphere n settings, etc which lack severely in modern zombies. Blundell really kept zombies together and the quality of zombies since then has regressed immensely. The replay value just isn't really there. I also feel like maps like shadows of evil naturally had the player learn the maps systems in an engaging way whereas modern zombie maps do not do this well. There was a lot to explore back then. The gameplay loop in Bo3 was peak, every single map felt very distinct in nearly every way imaginable. Innovation from map to map is what made zombies so great back then. Now there hardly is any innovation. Recycling enemy types, few map specific mechanics, warzone features in zombies (??) just to name a few. Anywho, great video! Popped up in my feed randomly.
Dead of the night is incredible and should be considered an of the dead map the cast is so good. The map is like second to none in its layout and it has the best wonder weapon ever. Thinking about it its basically shadows of evil 2.0... its got everything shadow has and more...
Good damn how I love these hour long Videos ❤ I have to say I ❤ Tranzit and Die Rise. It was so much fun to play when they released. I wouldn't play them today. But they where fun. By the way my favorite maps are Mob of the Dead, Origins, Moon and Der Eisendrache.
37:33 I'm starting to feel like all of the innovations to the game you deem the best make the game significantly easier such as the Civil Protector and Afterlife in Mob
I was gunna say, all the things he said makes these maps bad, just add challenge to the game. Even as an early teen, I loved transit and die rise because they were difficult and punishing. Jumping the wrong angle on die rise and losing all your stuff. Dashing out into the fog just to get downed and potentially not get picked up. Those things add challenge and dynamics to the gameplay
@@barbaricbryanagreed. Their differences make them unique and fun to play in their own ways. I mostly play Black Ops III these days, but those maps are fun to revisit from time to time on Black Ops II.
I actually think that the characters from Call of the Duty are pretty funny, especially George: "You can't outrun me... you can... but DON'T!" Cracks me up every time 😂
This is a fine video, and I'll be subscribing to see what else you put out -- but I just wanted to mention that you repeat a few sections. Dude. I watched this crossfaded at 3 in the morning, so hear me out. I'm 29 years old & I miss the way I used to feel about zombies. But I just want you to know; you just sent me through a time capsule. I was such a fan of zombies through my life that I attribute certain timeframes in my life (like what I was doing at the time, who I was hanging with, and what job I was working) to what map I was playing at the time. What's crazy, upon revisit, all these years later, is that these three maps oddly also coincide with some of my best memories in life. COTD - My brother and I locking ourselves in our room to play this map for hours to avoid the screaming of family around. MOTD - My senior year of high school, and one of the most fun times ever; chill smoke sessions with your best buds after school, and house parties on the weekends. SOE - Ahh... 20 years old. Best shape of my life, was making more money than now even though it was $6 less, just cause of how much inflation has gone up since then, and I was innocent to true heartbreak. Just me and my brother once again playing zombies for the fun of it. And just the memory of that alone was special. By 2015 I hadn't really kept up with call of duty, so when I got a call out of the blue from my brother, that he'd just bought the new Black Ops, and that he said there was zombies on it; I raced right over. I mean we're talking so fast that they hadn't even patched the game for splitscreen yet!!😂 Anyway, what I'm getting at, is a Thank You. Thank you for letting me truly reminisce in my past, and the fun in zombies that paired along the way. I commend your hard work. An hour and twenty minute video couldn't have been easy to edit, or script for that matter, and as a placeholder for another video no less!! Don't stop posting man. This nearly 30yo man got to shed a tear of joy from memories.
Fun fact about "of the dead" Nacht Der Untoten means "night of the undead" Shi no numa means "swamp of the dead" Kino Der Toten means "cinema of the dead" There are more "of the dead" maps than just whats in English.
Origins and Mob of the dead are still my top two maps. BO3 is the best zombies game to get today because it has classic and custom maps, but BO1&2 are my favorite COD zombies. I can't stand CW or MW3, the first map in WW2 was OK for the horror, but still doesn't compare.
It still surprises me that people dislike tranzit and Die rise, when they came out i heard nothing but good things about them me and my friends loved all the bo2 maps.
Loving the video so far. I agree with nuketown being a cheap way to make zombies map, but man it just really works as a zombies map and it’s one of the few maps that actually gets more difficult and fun the more people you have in game with the lack of training spots
One thing I never understood is how something like Skyrim can render a whole city with like 30+ npcs all speaking and following complex pathing but tranzit can’t render like 3 places?
loading screens. Skyrims npcs are about as barebones as it gets. And lower texture resolution. Also built on an engine from the early 90s. Cod had higher resolution textures, much more advanced ai, and no loading screens. The fog was the replacement for skyrims tens of thousands of loading screens
Nah that die rise not so great at the start made me kinda mad xD TLDR: I think different zombie maps get a lot of hate in comparison to others, it's all based on why and how you play the game. Things can get very repetetive when you have to do easter eggs/build stuff for the 150th time this year. I personally like playing zombies to reach high rounds (not world record but you know relatively high rounds) and im not a huge fan of 2 things in that regard. 1. Having to do an easter egg to get to a high round every time. 2. Having to craft a ton of stuff or do a ton of setup before i can "play" so to speak. In that regard i think die rise is great you build 2 things quite quickly and then you can just get into it. Moreover the many different rooms on different floors make for great areas for different challenges and often challenging training. I like mob of the dead its really cool and visually its stunning. But having to set everything up from the very start and the next 25 minutes or so if you are pretty fast, or maybe even an hour if you are a little slower/bad at the game, feels terrible if you wanna just jump in and start pushing some rounds. This is all my personal opinion ofc and i realise a lot of people love doing easter eggs and things like feeding dogs on mob since it looks cool and feels very much like progressing the zombies story overall. For doing many high round games back to back or even more low round challenges those maps feel terrible though.
Most of the Die Rise hate started after Mob was released. Most people saw it as a big upgrade from Tranzit but when mob was presented, there just wasn't really a choice on what map to play.
These are also just simply the best maps ever in cod history in my opinion, they all have different vibes from the rest of the serious and I honestly wish every zombies map has this tone because it’s just so perfect, this maps will always be special and just simply perfect
There’s a few inaccuracies here. George can’t down you in a single hit. He’s as strong as normal zombies. His health is 250,000 x the number of players. Which means he has 1,000,000 health with all 4 players. George won’t stop running on his own. He has to enter the water. The VR-11 will also calm him down but only temporarily. Shooting zombie’s legs don’t create crawlers. Only explosions do.
16:20 “zelinskis idea of innovation was a bus that could carry you or building a wonder weapon that can only be used once” bro you seriously already mentioned that jimmy was too ambitious when making zombies. Why is this pointless bit of jimmy hate here? Dude was not in the slightest unbiased which is what is required in a historical video. Jimmy was the most innovative lead developer with his ideas imo. He was just given only a year of development time unlike blundell who always had boatloads of time
Tbf if he's given a year of dev time and spends it on developing multiple game modes and scrapping them all at the last minute then he used his time poorly. I can understand complaining about a lack of dev time, but you have to use what you have well. Same goes for Blundell and the BO3 campaign so I'm not picking sides, you just have to take the responsibility if you overshoot and miss the target when you knew what resources you had to work with.

@@hannanah8036 It’s a skill issue man. The same reason why people didn’t like tranzit. A portion of the zombies community wanted a free spot to train and get to high rounds.
@@dabear7822no it wasnt
You seriously underestimate how popular tranzit was
Zombies was big during tranzit days
Yes many didnt like it but much more did enjoy it
Die rise wasnt well received even tho its a decent map
But zombies still wasnt dying
Most people were just playing tranzit town and Nuketown
And some even played die rise

@@dabear7822 Bro, Tranzit never went below 250-300k players daily.
Die Rise came out and it basically only went below 300k when the US servers went to sleep.
I feel like you probably didn't play it during it's release if you think it was dying
Zombies was great in waw to bo2. I liked the balance they had with survival maps and easter egg maps. It kept things fresh
Die rise was so good, I didn’t even know people didn’t like it till the last couple years
I love die rise too lol.
@@montruo000000007 understandable. Especially when you’re coming off of tranzit and just want a “normal” zombies experience like in bo1. For me personally bo2 was my first cod so I had no idea how zombies was meant to work so I was open to every idea they threw at me lol
Is not that I don’t like it, it’s too fucking complicated
Really loved this!! Super high quality from the editing, voice over, music and research. Thank you!

The skulls are for the blundergat u actually upgrade the retriever to redeemer by
1st getting kills in the map w retriever(Until u hear richtofen laugh)
2nd go to the bridge and get kills there. (Until u hear richtofen laugh)
3rd go to the 1st dog head from spawn and thro the retriever in to the lavaportalthingy under the map. (You will know that it has worked when you dont get it back)
And lastly finish the round and go to the showers, enter adterlife and in afterlife mode pick up the redeemer

Everytime I see a video essay on games it’s always a small creator. Not a bad thing since all that I’ve seen are good videos and I always subscribe to support them!
Shadows of Evil might actually be in my top 2 zombies maps of all time. Doesn't quite beat my love for Der Eisendrache but it's up there
I can remember being dissapointed with tranzit but loving town even though it was small it was good fun.
29:27 I just want to say, I distinctly remember playing multiple different consult beta in the late 2000s, early 2010’s. My favorite by far was halo reach.
I was obsessed with Shadows of Evil at launch, and it's still in my top 3 with Origins and MOTD.
All you said in the SoE section (the only section I watched) was "just try the map, you'll like it eventually".
Might sound harsh, but it's not a very compelling argument just describing the map, calling it objectively good, and then telling me to try it.

Hop in a match of shadows, then try playing tranzit
I'd say the opposite, I've never met someone who played it at launch and didn't hate it. I played it with a group of friends at launch, they hated it. Then I moved halfway around the world, made some new friends, asked if they played Zombies and they all said they loved BO1 but hate Tranzit
I'm a zombies casual, but I HATE tranzit.. it's the worst map I've evern played (and I played every WaW, BO1, and BO2 map)
Dude…people hated tranzit since 2012, stop it…just accept it

I remember when bo3 came out, my friends and I where always on the giant, we tried shadows on release, but kept getting our asses kicked, struggling to open pack a punch most games. But after a like a month we finally started to actually learn the map and where all the parts are, and ever since then it has been a top 5 map

u got a new sub. this video was so good
Here’s a trick for margwas on shadows of evil. When they spawn in they do an animation where all of their mouths are open. I used a shotgun or any high velocity/damage weapon and spam it when they’re in that spawn animation, destroys them in like 3 seconds.
This is dope subbed
Absolutely fantastic video!,Looking forward to more of your work !
Thank you so much, my friend ❤️
You forgot to mention that Shadows of Evil ALSO has randomized perks, similar to Nuketown.

I have to say I ❤ Tranzit and Die Rise. It was so much fun to play when they released. I wouldn't play them today. But they where fun. By the way my favorite maps are Mob of the Dead, Origins, Moon and Der Eisendrache.
There was a beta test for both COD 4 and WaW. For World at War I’m fairly certain that was a big pre order bonus
Buried was one of my favorite maps ever.
Like talking about how Lex was going to quit before mob, etc. I think you maybe moved some stuff around in the script but forgot to remove the duplicate section?
That’s incredible, dude! I’m so happy my video could help you reminisce in such a brilliant way! Much love ❤️
Fun fact about "of the dead"
Nacht Der Untoten means "night of the undead"
Shi no numa means "swamp of the dead"
Kino Der Toten means "cinema of the dead"
There are more "of the dead" maps than just whats in English.
You know technically Nacht 'der untoten' would fit into this quadrilogy

Civil Protector type of thing was in Revelations and Alpha Omega.

I agree with nuketown being a cheap way to make zombies map, but man it just really works as a zombies map and it’s one of the few maps that actually gets more difficult and fun the more people you have in game with the lack of training spots

loading screens. Skyrims npcs are about as barebones as it gets. And lower texture resolution. Also built on an engine from the early 90s.

Nah that die rise not so great at the start made me kinda mad xD
TLDR: I think different zombie maps get a lot of hate in comparison to others, it's all based on why and how you play the game.
I think all the hate is because a few big youtubers disliked it.
Everyone I talk to who played it back in the day loved it
These are also just simply the best maps ever in cod history in my opinion, they all have different vibes from the rest of the serious and I honestly wish every zombies map has this tone because it’s just so perfect, this maps will always be special and just simply perfect
Same goes for Blundell and the BO3 campaign so I'm not picking sides, you just have to take the responsibility if you overshoot and miss the target when you knew what resources you had to work with.
when people solve the super ee, they'll understand that the zombies are their own entity and that everything is its own separate being

The only reason people hate die rise is becuase of the lack of an easy kino training area. Just embrace the map design.
Which is funny, because the Buddha room is literally maybe one of the most brain-dead, easy to master training rooms in any pre-Bl*ndell maps, ESPECIALLY with the Sliquifier.
@josephgreble5 agreed. I still do it today, over 11 years later and its the first thing that comes to mind when I hear Die Rise.
