This film combines them into a sequence, with some embellishment. - We don't know what exactly makes Elder Dragon blood special. - New World Individuals being older is presented as an in-universe theory, and is not considered confirmed. - I call Teostra and Lunastra collectively "Flame Dragons" but that's just the title they have in some of the games. As far as the lore goes, they don'thave a bespoke species name. - "Flame Shroud" and "Blast Shroud" are names made up by me. The Blast Shroud does have an official name ("Dispersing State") but I chose to change it. - "Supernova" and "Hell Flare" are the official names of their ultimate attacks, as described in MHW Complete Works. - Which of the two dragons is more aggressive than the other has changed across games, so this film tries to keep that variability intact. - The Hunter's Guild being a collective of multiple semi-independent organizations is mostly canon, it is established that there are multiple Hunter's Guilds that are often collectively called "The Guild". - While it isn't ever addressed in-canon, it is implied numerous times that there are multiple ancient civilizations and not just one. - The plants on the back of a Yama Tsukami being imbued with the same energy as Elder Dragon Blood is an assumption by me: In the Lore, they are stated to simply be "empowered".
@@Oceaniz also you originally said you wouldn't do the forbidden monsters so the question is what will you count as forbidden monsters cause safi'jiiva technically isn't one of them so could there be an possibility of one day a documentary based solely on them could exist in this new ecology series since it would make sense to have them separated from the normal monsters
With all the insane monsters the Frontier Hunters fight, wouldn’t be surprised if somebody in the guild saw them as a treasure trove of knowledge to document.
@@Oceaniz Man, I always imagine you trying to explain that Nuclear Red Diablos guy (dont know this official name) 😂 That being said, on a more serious note, I always imagined you'd talk about frontier in a "Tavern" setting, a regular hunter registering his days like in Rise's video registering the "Fisherman tales" an old frontier hunter is telling him, only to discover somehow at the end they may be true
Frontier’s canonicity is a point of contention for some, but I believe there are still many stories to be told in the libraries of Mezaporta and its respective hunters. Besides, aren’t we all weird in some manner or another?
I always loved Chameleos but that bit explaining its potential threat level is something that catapulted my love for it even further. The idea that one of the goofiest elder dragons and monsters in general at a whim could wipe out villages silently if it really wanted to is *terrifying* .
Chameleos is in EVERY Monster Hunter game, and doesn't even attack anyone in some of them, he's truly chill. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if Chameleos is one of the most successful Elder Dragons; we just don't see them.
@@justsomejerseydevilwithint4606 yes, Chameleos being in every game is as iconic as Kezhu's theme being such a trascendental banger that it consistently breaks the 4th wall, and keeps playing IRL even after the hunt.
As for the Tigrex, i would suggest that the wing membranes still serve a role in thermoregulation. Such a large active predator would probably have issues with overheating, so perhaps there is some mechanism that cools its blood as it passes through the wings. Maybe it has a high body temp naturally but pushing blood through the wings and "exposing it" to air temp cools the blood down
Another thing I’ve thought about is what if the membrane is more useful for young Tigrex. Being a bit more developed for gliding to aid in hunting and traversing, especially since young Tigrex lack the raw power of the adults. With this ability fading out as they get older in favor of stronger forelimbs.
@@kennethsatria6607yeah, so any time we talk about large surfaces on animals like this we’re going to run into this problem, because it kind of works both ways? It sort of depends. In a hot but otherwise windy environment, large surfaces like these can be used for cooling, which is an actual phenomenon we’ve observed in nature. Thing is, any sufficiently large surface can also serve as a big solar panel, so it’s conceivable that in some cases they can help absorb sunlight and increase warmth. In practice, this pretty much doesn’t work. At best you might get something near a net neutral, but when you consider that the cold is always worse at night, the whole idea falls apart. But there is a simpler explanation. We don’t know exactly how they came to evolve in the first place, but we do know that we’re operating on a loose approximation of evolutionary principles. And, at least to me, their wings have always seemed to be largely vestigial. They don’t really serve a purpose anymore, but when one considers that it has both a need to be warm, in its environment, and capable of good cooling, during intense activity, it’s at least conceivable that they’re not a net negative overall. We see otherwise negative traits pop up in nature, so it’s not lacking a basis in reality.
I have ADHD but you somehow managed again to make me watch an entire multiple hours long video. This is absurdly impressive. Your videos, both visuals and narrative, are always a great watch that just somehow get me hooked every single time. Amazing work as always!
These big videos genuinely keep getting better every time, well worth the wait. My favourite parts were: 1. Crabs 2. Tigrex 3. Monkeys But every single part was interesting. Take your time making the next one.
Oceaniz, I’ve just gotta say man, absolutely bravo. Love the work you’ve done with these videos both as a scientist, a monster hunter fan, and more personally, someone who struggles with insomnia. Your videos are both an INCREDIBLY interesting watch and also a majestic experience to drift away to in sleep, one of the few that CAN help me sleep. Cheers, and thanks for all your hard work! Can’t wait to see what’s next from you!
Great video! I noticed at around 1:47:39 that the Tigrex would flap up its wings when it roars. Perhaps they use their underdeveloped wings as a sort of soundboard to increase the range and power of their roars in combat. That's just what I've noticed though.
It is pretty ironic that in a game named ''Monster Hunter'', with how well contextualized and inserted in a believable ecosystem these so called ''Monsters'' are, they perhaps are the least Monster-y of all media, they are literally just animals going on with their lives, sometimes i feel wrong for calling them Monsters.
I'm gonna guess that the term "Monster" is largely traditional at this point. Society had been in the shadow of these creatures for so long, with such a radical shift in mentality required to assert itself against them, that even now, where the species that once heralded disaster can be dealt with and understood (mostly), they are still held above normal, less powerful animals due to their influence over how civilization developed.
it is, ironically also a series thats only slowly actually implementing actual hunting instead of just "follow its tracks and then try not to die while fighting it"
The sheer mention of rajang's powerful immune system just had me kick into fight or flight mode due to legends sprout about during the frenzy epidemic.
I was obsessed with that even as a kid playing Tri, those ecology videos were fascinating to me. I sucked at the game so I’d just spend hours roaming the forest outside of town, seeing how long I could survive without bringing any resources from the town, barring a bbq spit. Making my own bug nets and pickaxes, cooking my own food, gathering whetstones, just trying to live out in the woods for as long as possible.
Five entire hours, wow. This is going to be a lovely way to relax on the bus for the next few days. So glad you’ve been making these, it’s one of my favorite series, to be entirely honest. Thank you very much for all your hard work!
as someone that started with world and only recently branched out properly into the older games (also rise) these videos have honestly become my favorite monster hunter content out there second only to the actual games themselves. your incredible creativity is on full display between how you bridge writing or continuity errors, or contextualize post-endgame content as a more personal story and less an official documentation, in accordance with their more out-there nature. I hope these videos are as much fun to make as they are to watch, this is genuinely a one of a kind series.
I like how you split the gens of games into periods of research, also trying to explain why lunastra was village only and thus single player was nice too
The Rajang section got me thinking, Could the selection pressures on the already rare Kirin led to them selecting for smaller horns? Like how there’s elephants that are growing smaller tusks because humans keep killing all the big tusk ones. How would this affect Rajang if their path to adulthood suddenly ceases to be? Do they start trying other thunder monsters? Kill a Zinorge and eat it’s bug symbiotes?
Fun fact in the older games poison disabled teostra's aura as well not just kushala. It's likely it's weak to poison but more resiliant than kushala due to this. it's why going for chameleos first is always reccomended.
HUGE respect for you making these incredible videos, you can feel the effort put into them. make sure to take care of yourself, you're doing great work
I absolutely love waiting for a new video from you to get a wonderfully made documentary. It really makes waiting worth it. Keep up this amazing work man.
Nothing gets me excited for more Monster Hunter like your videos. Playing with friends got me into the franchise but you introduced me to my favorite aspect of the series, one that capitalized on my love for nature and science. So thank you for all your incredible work.
Honestly shocked when I checked your channel and saw that instead on posting the other second gen videos you just compiled them with the existing parts. Not complaining, I love a good 5 hour ecological binge and this was a lovely surprise
Wake up, Oceaniz cooked, and this time more than ever! 5 fcking hours of Monster biology and lore??? Cant wait to finish work to return home, lock myself in my room and watch this masterpiece all at once😍😍😍
Wow! That was timing! I just finished your First Generation Documentary and enjoyed it by a lot and now I see the next one has just been uploaded :D OMG Thank you for this. This is awesome!
2:58:15 by this measure Deviljho most of all, and perhaps a few other monsters should be classed as Elder Dragons. But I believe the defining trait that makes a monster an Elder Dragon is the devastation it brings not by its actions, but by the calamity of its very presence in an area. That just by being there, a Kushala will cause hurricanes and gales. That the area around a Teostra will ignite just because of its body temperature.
While that is a good criteria, that doesn't cover everything. Yama, Nergi, Malzeno, Valtrax, and even the likes of Dalamadur and Gog don't cause disruptions or disaster by their mere presence. They have to be active and do something.
Like the earlier person said, that doesn't really cover everything. I would say that the requirements of being classified as an elder dragon is the possession of some kind of unexplainable ability that seems much closer to magic than science. They don't really have to be overwhelmingly powerful- You could place a few specific non-elders in a fight against kirin or chameleos and expect the non-elders to win confidently. But while those strongest non-elders like Bazelgeuse, Rajang, Deviljho, etc achieve their power through believable biological features such as simple immense strength, the elders get their power by just defying logic, whether that's by generating ridiculous amounts of electricity out of nowhere, having a literal engine in their chest, going invisible, absorbing minerals to form unbreakable armor on their skin, regenerating from a single scale, etc.
Kinda surprising that Espinas wasnt included, given how he is now a canon monster and frontier is technically 2nd gen and is also one of the few frontier monsters that actually has some decent lore on him
The reason probably because Espinas wasn’t introduced in a mainline game until 5th Gen (Sunbreak specifically). Once we get to that Gen with this series I’m sure we’ll get an episode on it.
Well, Espinas goes to Mainline in Gen 5, so we probably get it in Gen 5. Tbh I am more surprised there is no Lavasioth here. Or maybe it was covered in Plesioth episode?
Just finished IT WAS SO GOOD I LOVED THIS I love these big lore/ecology videos, I love the embellishment too it brings a nice narrative ! You are a really good storyteller
I believe that Shen Gaoren could be somewhat aquatic like normal crabs but due to its size it must have deep sea gigantism or it evolved its size for a unknown reason but that’s my speculation
I don't think we know where their natural habitat is (I don't, at the very least) nor what their competitors are, so it could be that the biggest of the species survived longer than smaller members.
@@Br0ck3n True, but if it id indeed a Deep Sea Creature, one of its competitor and may have likely been predator is probably an Abyssal Lagiacruz or even a Ceadeus.
Man what a Video, this is why I love Monster Hunter, so much lore to the series. I also love how you cover the differences between the Old and New World .
Not sure if you'll consider this idea, but maybe you could cover more of the lore of the Hunters themselves. Namely how they are theorized to be the results of an ancient super soldier program, or they're the descendants of them. And maybe a theory as to how they go active is extra consumption of monster meat before training. And I'm not talking just Aptonoth meat, I'm talking the bigger stuff.
I would love to cover that but to this day, I haven't been able to find a direct source for any hint of this! If you have any leads, absolutely let me know :D
@Oceaniz I double checked and it's in a few of the Monster Hunter encyclopedias, and lore bits hinted at in art books. Which also explains why it's hard to find since those don't leave Japan too often. But one of the details is that hunting was started by Wyverians and then shifted to humans. With the humans having a greater propensity for strength and durability due to ambient genes from a super soldier program back during a human dragon war. Whi h is where you get the ruins on Fonron.
It's finally here...half the generation features more awesome monsters and the other going deep into the lore of the Elder Dragons! Your dedication to Monster Hunter research would make the guild proud of your efforts....and I'm proud to have watched your progress thus far.
I recently found your channel and I have been loving listening to your videos throughout the day! Not only has it gotten me reinvested in MH, but it’s deepened my respect for how much info is available if you just pay attention/do a little digging. Thanks for the content!
amazing video favorite part, the fact that chameleos does not become invisible just by changing colors as a chameleon would but trough a combination of neurotoxin, color change, and vision obstruction is one fo the most creative and plausible stuff that i have seen in mh
i love how so many of these creatures are based off real life. barioth being a sabretooth, rathian being an eagle, nargcacuga being a bat, tigrex being a T-Rex dragon. it's so goddamn cool lol
Video documentaries like this are what make it so enriching to be a fan of Monster Hunter. While there is always the underlying rules that games should be fun before anything else - which does still apply to the games - there is something so beautiful when a community for a series is able to delve so much more into the lore of these worlds, making them that much more believable and living. Some of it maybe heresay and fairy tales, but the explicable existences of these animals, natural or otherwise, is what makes Monster Hunter stand out so much amongst its contemporaries. Even if you are a person that prefers the act of hunting over ecology, such as myself, you have to give immense respect to the work that not only goes into making these creatures feel larger than life, but part of a natural world that is all their own. This is a wonderfully made video Oceaniz, thank you for giving us this nature documentary from the Guild. And I look forward to further studies from other generations of guild research and documentation.
Maybe the hermitaurs cause for growth is finding the skull. Maybe theyre able to get some nutrient that impacts how they grow, which could possibly also make the plum.
Hey man love your videos, would you ever consider putting your more long form content on Spotify as a podcast? I’m not sure if that’s allowed but I’d love to be able to listen on the go!
I know i already commented once before here but ive been slowly digesting this video bit by bit over the last week or so lol so i apologize in advance. Im honestly surprised you didn't mention Voljang! I know origin species are technically NOT true ancestors to the species that are in the mainline games, but it does help provide a good look into the true ancestors to both of them as well as most of the ape fanged beasts. Regardless, keep up the great work, i appreciate your videos and im looking forward to you next one, im sure this one was a huge step given its length.
The new Handler in Wilds is cute but can I have Oceaniz as my Handler? Id love to just ride out in the field with him explaining monsters and plants to me
Love this series and hope to see it continue! Must say I’d be curious to see how long the 5th Gen episode would be given how many new monsters were introduced (with both Alatreon and Fatalis both in and out of universe being talked about more openly as well)
DId your All for one: image of evil video get taken down? will you reuplaod it in the future maybe? i really liked your analysis of him and its a shame if the video gets lost forever
1:43:17 I know this is probably from a kore booo or something, but it's extremely funny when paired with the knowledge that around half of Tigrex' cutscenes involve it attempting an ambush

- The history of the establishment of the Elder Dragon Classification system is never told to us in the Lore as one story, simply described in bits and pieces.
Will there be a documentary on the third gen?
@@deanastephensosborne5604Yes, but first I rest ;D
@@Oceaniz okay
@@Oceaniz also you originally said you wouldn't do the forbidden monsters so the question is what will you count as forbidden monsters cause safi'jiiva technically isn't one of them so could there be an possibility of one day a documentary based solely on them could exist in this new ecology series since it would make sense to have them separated from the normal monsters
In your phylogeny document, could you add Zamites as the juvenile of Zamtrios like you did with every other monster that has them?
I love the running joke that the main guild just... ignores the Frontier hunters because they're weird and bring back all these weird stories. XD
With all the insane monsters the Frontier Hunters fight, wouldn’t be surprised if somebody in the guild saw them as a treasure trove of knowledge to document.
Someone braver (and more fluent in japanese) than me is gonna have to handle MHFrontier Ecology for now hahaha
@@Oceaniz Man, I always imagine you trying to explain that Nuclear Red Diablos guy (dont know this official name) 😂
That being said, on a more serious note, I always imagined you'd talk about frontier in a "Tavern" setting, a regular hunter registering his days like in Rise's video registering the "Fisherman tales" an old frontier hunter is telling him, only to discover somehow at the end they may be true
@@Kato756 i think you mean Varusaburosuand and as interesting as this Monster is, i realy wish we could get a video about Voljang.
Frontier’s canonicity is a point of contention for some, but I believe there are still many stories to be told in the libraries of Mezaporta and its respective hunters. Besides, aren’t we all weird in some manner or another?
FIVE HOURS?! Oh, we are spoiled today, folks.
HUNTERS ASSEMBLE!!!
@@Emird143 Break out the Well-Done Steaks and Dash Juice!
I always loved Chameleos but that bit explaining its potential threat level is something that catapulted my love for it even further. The idea that one of the goofiest elder dragons and monsters in general at a whim could wipe out villages silently if it really wanted to is *terrifying* .
Sometimes, the funny ones can be the most dangerous.
(Megalovania intensifies)
Bro SAME ❤
Chameleos is in EVERY Monster Hunter game, and doesn't even attack anyone in some of them, he's truly chill. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if Chameleos is one of the most successful Elder Dragons; we just don't see them.
@@justsomejerseydevilwithint4606world was my favorite version of chameleos
Thing is though how then would they be so adapted to cold environments?
My favourite parts were:
1. Crabs
2. Tigrex
3. Monkeys
But every single part was interesting.
Take your time making the next one.
Ah i see, fan of unconditional violence.
That is great to hear, thank you so much! I'm glad that my stuff can help you, if even a little :D
I'm on dark mode and I couldn't read your comment... How do you do this?
This explains why we haven’t seen more episodes since winter, but it is well worth the wait with what this pertains
Perfect timing as the Monster Hunter Wilds hype ramps up!
My fav parts are narga, tigrex And kushala
Great video! I noticed at around 1:47:39 that the Tigrex would flap up its wings when it roars. Perhaps they use their underdeveloped wings as a sort of soundboard to increase the range and power of their roars in combat. That's just what I've noticed though.
No way you drop this today. I still havnt finished the first one. These videos have been my sleeping videos. Thank you
Oceaniz: Kushala Daoras susceptibility to poison comes from its weak immune system.
Me who's immunosuppressed: HE'S JUST LIKE ME FR FR
Oh to be a storm dragon
It is pretty ironic that in a game named ''Monster Hunter'', with how well contextualized and inserted in a believable ecosystem these so called ''Monsters'' are, they perhaps are the least Monster-y of all media, they are literally just animals going on with their lives, sometimes i feel wrong for calling them Monsters.
I'm gonna guess that the term "Monster" is largely traditional at this point. Society had been in the shadow of these creatures for so long, with such a radical shift in mentality required to assert itself against them, that even now, where the species that once heralded disaster can be dealt with and understood (mostly), they are still held above normal, less powerful animals due to their influence over how civilization developed.
it is, ironically also a series thats only slowly actually implementing actual hunting instead of just "follow its tracks and then try not to die while fighting it"
Tonight on Monster Hunter Ecology: Monke get Angy, a Squid decides it can fly, and All Hail our Mighty Crab Overlords!
The sheer mention of rajang's powerful immune system just had me kick into fight or flight mode due to legends sprout about during the frenzy epidemic.
OMG, such a nice b-day present! Thank you Mr. Oceaniz ecology master, sir!
Happy birthday, and thanks for watching!
I love that the MH team put so much thought and detail into the monsters that we can get hours of content on their behaviors alone.
I like how you split the gens of games into periods of research, also trying to explain why lunastra was village only and thus single player was nice too
Okay that Chameleos part was pretty funny, clearly written like a informative comedy, nice
Chameleos are in every Monster Hunter game, you just can't see them in some games.
"Long ass youtube video about niche interest" my beloved
HUGE respect for you making these incredible videos, you can feel the effort put into them. make sure to take care of yourself, you're doing great work

Humans in the dragon war, when the trees start speaking chameleos:
I absolutely love waiting for a new video from you to get a wonderfully made documentary. It really makes waiting worth it. Keep up this amazing work man.
These long documentaries are awesome! Your hardwork is always appreciated 😊😊😊😊😊
Chameleos seems to be the monster version of: "if friend shaped, why not friend?"
Nothing gets me excited for more Monster Hunter like your videos. Playing with friends got me into the franchise but you introduced me to my favorite aspect of the series, one that capitalized on my love for nature and science. So thank you for all your incredible work.
Monster hunter documentaries might be a small niche, but holy shit im into it, this is unironically one of my favourite videos on the internet
Honestly shocked when I checked your channel and saw that instead on posting the other second gen videos you just compiled them with the existing parts. Not complaining, I love a good 5 hour ecological binge and this was a lovely surprise
I love how at 40:45 some random Rajang sprints through the scene in the rush of getting... I dunno, a Kirin or so.
@@blackmark2899 fair nuff i spose.
@@chiefbawor_thegr8966 I don't think it was but I could be wrong.
Just finished IT WAS SO GOOD I LOVED THIS
I love these big lore/ecology videos, I love the embellishment too it brings a nice narrative !
@@chiefbawor_thegr8966 That's true. Those would both be better dealt with at larger sizes
Straight up making it feel as real as possible. Loving this content.
We appreciate all of your work
It's finally here...half the generation features more awesome monsters and the other going deep into the lore of the Elder Dragons! Your dedication to Monster Hunter research would make the guild proud of your efforts....and I'm proud to have watched your progress thus far.
It'd be SO COOL if we could get a MH game set in the LOOOOONG past, where we hunt the ancient ancestors of the monsters we know and love.
OH MY MY HOW I'M GOING TO ENJOY THIS MASTERPIECE 🔥🔥🔥
I recently found your channel and I have been loving listening to your videos throughout the day! Not only has it gotten me reinvested in MH, but it’s deepened my respect for how much info is available if you just pay attention/do a little digging. Thanks for the content!
you using rayman and king's field music makes me appreciate these videos so much more, they add alot

favorite part, the fact that chameleos does not become invisible just by changing colors as a chameleon would but trough a combination of neurotoxin, color change, and vision obstruction is one fo the most creative and plausible stuff that i have seen in mh

What an insightful and entertaining video! Simply incredible!
This is so well detailed it has so many elements from real world biology. You out did yourself.
