Man, I have to say that I've been a hardcore follower of your videos on making masks & props with very unique tools & accessories that you can get locally. I really do enjoy your tutorials so much now that I can try out different cool techniques when I'm making new latex masks. I do want to thank you for sharing this one because I'm currently working on this Leatherface-stylish Old Man mask that'll contain a mustache & beard around his jaw, has a bulgy prosthetic eyeball to his left eye, & the straps will be made of burlap dipped in latex giving it that leathery fleshy looks. It'll be pretty sick once it's done.
You are awesome! I have to cover you on Ghost Hunting Theories this fall. Will be putting a link up in my sidebar too. You are too much fun and talented!
Awesome as always, great vid. I happen to find some hair similar to that (only paid a dollar for mine)at one of those donation stores. I find a lot of good stuff like that for my props at those kind of stores. Looking forward to next Wednesday
Jerry Tiner I get a lot of stuff from there also, but I never feel right telling folks to look there for materials. If you need to build something right now, then you need a resource that will always have them- but you can still feel really lucky when you do find them in the odd place.
This is amazing! IDK how many more tutorials u have, but I'll ask in case: do u have any on how2 add realistic eyebrows, a mustache, & a small pt goatee? Thx. Thx4 sharing this! Very cool!!!
For the top of the head hairline, a trick to hide the tracks without doing free flowing hair would be to attach the hair as if it were to hang in front of the face, and comb it back. Once you put the clear coat on, it'll keep it in place, and give you a bit more body in the hair, and make it look as if it's coming out of the top of the head instead of being glued down. Give it a try.
kronos6948 I have done that before, it works for hiding the hairline, but it gives a bit to much body the times I have tried it. it looked like a lions mane. I use that for clowns though because I want that look.
StiltbeastStudios Right as you said. It seems you just see that in ritual masks and such. That is interesting though, I have wondered as a kid why the hair was so stiff on my gorilla mask.
Having helluva time finding the faux hair. All I can find are wefts that have really long hair but the weft is only a couple of inches. Do you have online source or brand name? Thanks
Edie Bluntzer yeah, that sucks lol. Its shaky and the sound is bad on go pros. here is my one attempt at that. ruclips.net/video/pV7ltSKvZvA/видео.html
hello. what exactly is the hair string thingy called. Ive tryed to explain it to local beauty supplies and they keep asking if im talking about a weave.. Am I talking about a weave thingy? Thanks and thanks for the plastidip tip. Ive been spending a fortune on MonsterMakers flex gloss and its expensive , clogs up my airbrush and dosent look as good , so big thanks
Allen someone about a year ago asked where you got your hair for your werewolf mask from. You said you were going to send him a picture of the brand I would like to know the brand model number Etc so I can see if I can find it online. Thanks again
PsychoAxeMan If you have a Jo-Mar fabrics around you, you can get them there. Also, they have different style styrofoam heads, other than just the normal female one. They have 2 different male ones. These have a larger head and jawline, and they retail for about $9 a piece.
+SkidBacon I dont like eye brows on my werewolves- I feel it messes with the framing of the face. but thank you for your input and for taking the time to comment.
+StiltbeastStudios Right on, makes sense. Thanks for answering! Means a lot, you're my go to guy for pragmatic prop making. I always look forward to your videos! Can't wait to see what's next!
wanted to dress up as the old witch from the classic EC horror comics, but the best mask for the job has brown hair instead of white hair. is there a safe way to remove hair from a mask so i can replace it?
I'm doing something like this for a walking dead whisperer mask. I'm doing beta if you know the walking dead lol. I was wondering if I should paint the mask first nd what would be the best method of painting to ensure the paint stays and doesn't crack with the stretch of the mask? I'm using an already existing latex zombie mask and cutting it and modding it. Thanks for your help and I love this video!
Great tips as always Allen! I've never thought of the Crystal Clear step before. Makes a lot of sense. I wanted to try punching hair also, just for the hairline -- to blend it a bit better. But I assumed I couldn't get a tool through easily. (I pour my masks pretty thick) Thought it was more a silicone thing, also, since silicone is so soft. But maybe I'll give it a try someday as well.
Brad Goodspeed The crystal clear step helps a lot. Mask hair can tangle quite a bit without it. Are you familiar with the process of hair punching? would you like a video? Its not a difficult process but it is time consuming.
Beautiful sculpt on that WW man. It's inspiring me to finally do one myself.... question though, do you mold over your teeth, or do you add teeth after you cast the mask? I've been afraid to mold teeth like that for fear of bricking the mold because teeth won't come out, and air bubbles in the teeth. I can't seem to find the answer in your other videos...
Allen Howe Thanks, glad you like it! and thanks for commenting. I always mold with the teeth in I like to do one pour for a mask lol. Thos teeth a pumpkin teeth- you can buy them on etsy. they are perfectly tapered to pull out of the mold.
Hey Allen, do you happen to know the exact name and brand of the hair you used in this video? No one in my local area has that stuff, everything is a lot more expensive. I tried online but Googling wigs and hair doesn't narrow it down enough, lol. Thanks Allen, I'm sure you are very busy right now.
It was a bat creature that I turned into a werewolf for a company that needed a lot of werewolves and needed variety. And a wereboar could be fun to do!

I been looking for a video like this everywhere! This is going to help me add my mane to my unicorn mask! Thank you!
go make that unicorn mask! you go be fabulous!
Great job Allen - as usual, your technique and materials have given me some new ideas. Cheers!
True Brit Thank you for commenting, it means a lot.
Great vid. Definitely using this technique for a Krampus build for Christmas.
***** sweet, send me pics when you get done.

crap that came out better then some of the masks i bought .....save to favorites for future mask making thank your HFL!!
deoblo85 Go make stuff!
Just what I needed to see! I recently acquired a Universal Wolf Man mask, and want to put some real hair on it.
This is amazing! IDK how many more tutorials u have, but I'll ask in case: do u have any on how2 add realistic eyebrows, a mustache, & a small pt goatee? Thx.

This is a huge help. I would never have thought of airbrushing the hairline to transition to the mask. Now to figure out that damn airbrush...
Graves Of The Groves When I first did it, I thought "couldnt hurt" but it does make a big difference in the finished look.
Once again, great work. Do you ever allow for free flowing hair or do you always spray it down?
World of MONSTERS Free flowing hair tangles so it leads to a shorter life span in a haunt environment.
StiltbeastStudios
Right as you said. It seems you just see that in ritual masks and such. That is interesting though, I have wondered as a kid why the hair was so stiff on my gorilla mask.

Have you thought about a GoPro camera mounted on you're head so we can see what you see while you are creating your work? Just a thought

Awesome Video Thanks 🙏
we also have a stiltbeast live channel and I do mask work on there all the time.
Another great video...thank you! I worry your ventilation system is not at full capacity. To wit: hair fingers. That was hilarious!
Mark Dyslin My ventillation is adequate - good enough I dont cough and bad enough to get the giggles ;)
Another awesome tip!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks.
+loneninja Thanks for commenting- glad you liked the video!

I guess it's a secret? Anyway the price is double since pumpkin head is in command!
Thanks!
This is what i needed. :)
Great job.. PS.. Your the guy that buys all the foam heads from hobby lobby lol
PsychoAxeMan NO! they are so expensive there, I buy them from wig shops where they are 3-4$.
StiltbeastStudios oh.. I didn't know that , I'll have to pick them up there instead.thanks
No problem, Hoby lobby has them for $5 and $10 pretty high.
PsychoAxeMan If you have a Jo-Mar fabrics around you, you can get them there. Also, they have different style styrofoam heads, other than just the normal female one. They have 2 different male ones. These have a larger head and jawline, and they retail for about $9 a piece.
great video!! I feel like there was a missed opportunity for some epic eyebrows though

Where did you buy the hair from I need to add more to my chewbacca costume
its hairweave hair from a beauty supply/ wig store.

And also, it'd be better to cut it free from the waft for a more natural look right?
Good job

StiltbeastStudios that would be cool
StiltbeastStudios I didn't want to ask, but I'd LOVE a video on hair punching!
StiltbeastStudios Thanks for this great video. I'm about to do some hairwork on a mask and i'd love to see your take on hair punching.
Sooon.
can i use the cement glue on a soft latex mask?
yes

StiltbeastStudios BTW, how did you "mount" that mask? Did you use a cloth strap buckled into the sides?
Allen Howe velcro straps that were contact cemented on with a few stitches for support.
Another awesome job!
Greg Packard Thanks for commenting!
can i use the cement glue on a soft latex mask to apply the hair to?
yes
Excellent video as always. Would like to see a more human shorter hair do video. Hair fingers are inevitable lol.
chris fry I can give that a shot, let me wade through this batch of werewolves!
StiltbeastStudios Thanks Allen! No hurry. I appreciate that!
Excellent video this weeks. Thanks!
Lori Green Thank you for commenting! I appreciate your support.
i knew you can use that Cement for many things.. never thought about hair on a mask...
JOHNJOHN 9111 Its pretty awesome stuff, I have also thinned it and used it as a paint base for masks and costumes.
awesome... now i need to pick me up some..

+thepajc810 I can swing by tomorrow and take a few pics- I'm sure you can find some in your area.
Amazing
Keith Baldwin Thank you for commenting!
what type of glue i should use to not break the natural latex? is the bostik good?
Can I use this same technique on resin head sculpt? I have the monster of Frankenstein head and would like to use actual hair.
sure, but Id use 5 min epoxy to attach it instead of contact cement.
Do you think I could use this method for a full over head chewbacca mask? would it look good?
+warriorsnuts the method will work- You determine if it looks good or not, just keep at it till it looks right.
How can I water down liquid latex? The brand I bought came too thick.
with distilled water
when turning hair on ears, use straight razor in a sawing motion comes off choppy, yet natural.
old crone
+Kay Schmid thanks for the tips!
This is a great explanation. Do you think one can cover an entire mask in faux (fake) fur?
of course, here you go!

It looks great! 😲 But I have a question: is it also possible to glue with hot glue on a latex mask?
Hot glue won't hold long
Where did you get the glue from
Home Depot
clint lewallen ACE Walmart some times has it. Any hard ware store though will carry it. That can is usually $10
