a full run through of painting a latex mask. I get the plastidip glossifier from an auto parts store (plasti dipping your car is hot right now). Or I order it from here www.dipyourcar....
I met you at the haunters convention in Columbus a few months ago. You encouraged me to finish a Batman cowl I had been putting off. It turned out better than I thought lol. Thanks
been cut and sewing masks for years slipknot style. just made my first cast and poured my pancake mask (first tester). got paints on the way. gonna have to hand paint this year. but glad I found your page. very helpful and straight forward. not dumbed down but not assuming I knew all of what you were talking about. great shit my friend.
Again, that table clamp mask stand idea. So brilliant. I wish I had thought of it a week or so ago when I was making an actual burlap recreation of Eric Pigor's/Trick or Treat Studios Gluten Freak mask. Styrofoam head on a table was not cooperating at all, but I got it done, would have been soooooo much easier with the clamp stand. AND now I know how to paint latex masks. Absolutely love that you're back.
Thanks, done a bit with cast latex and cotton, but when painting I've been using brush only acrylic paint. I think I'll get one of these airbrushes and try out some latex paint. Love that the video is "only the facts man" subbed
You sounded like Bob Ross when you were talking about "just to make it glisten". I was fully expecting to hear "And over here, we have a happy little wound"
Thanks so much for putting this vid together. I just finished a sculpt and hydrocal mold for a fantasy star wars character. I was scared to death about breaking the mold when I tried it apart. Worked out great! Now I have clean negative ready to pour. Your mask painting vid gave me a lot more confidence for hitting it with an airbrush. Paashe H baby! Will try to post pics when done. :)
LOVE the show! You mention you do your projects for the conditions of Haunts ... could you show us the difference between regular lighting, and the lighting you create for ... and how the different masks and props look under those lighting conditions? How regular props look, and how they need to be altered for different light conditions. And no more saying you're not a painter. You're awesome! Jim
I bought this harbor freight airbrush. Can't seem to get it to work properly, though. I thin the heck out of acrylic paints using distiller water. Sometimes paint comes out, sometimes just air, even after adjusting the fluid caps. Also, when paint does come out, it comes out especially when I depress the trigger, then doesn't come out after a few seconds. Only prob I can think of is the fluid caps being clogged, the tubes inside the bottle.
+troy mccombs its most likely a clog- Im posting a cleaning video soon so look out for that. Carburetor cleaner is my big tip for what to clean with as its meant to clean fiddly gunky bits out of metal parts. just rinse with water after to protect your seals.
Thank you Allen! My wife got me an airbrush kit for Xmas and it's still sitting in the box. Didn't really know were to start. Wish I would have asked for a single stage to get my feet wet with.. Great video, simple for amateurs!
Actually you know what, this kit I got came with three different types: Master Airbrush Model G22 Airbrush Set Master performance multi-purpose high performance dual-action airbrush with a 1/3 oz. Gravity fluid cup and a 0.3mm needle & nozzle that allows you to spray from hairline up to 1-1/2" wide patterns. Master Airbrush Model G25 Airbrush Set Master performance multi-purpose precision dual-action gravity feed airbrush with a 1/16 oz. Gravity fluid cup and a 0.2 mm needle & nozzle that allows you to spray from hairline up to 1" wide patterns. Master Airbrush Model E91 Airbrush Set Single-action external mix siphon feed airbrush set with a 0.8mm tip, 2 - 3/4 oz. siphon bottles and has an 1/8" air inlet (airbrush can be used with a compressor or with the included hose & adaptor for a propellant can) Here's the eBay link www.ebay.com/itm/New-3-Airbrush-Compressor-Kit-Dual-Action-Spray-Air-Brush-Set-Tattoo-Nail-Art-/140975810534?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20d2d027e6
Thanks for the tutorial! I am the Keep It Simple Stupid type, and you've been my information go-to guy for nearly a year. I've never used latex paint before, though I need it for a pair of TMNT hands. I have a 1/5Hp (30psi sustained) compressor from Harbor Freight. Is that strong enough to push the latex formula?
Just wondering....when you mix your casting latex in with your paint. Does it clog your airbrush up. On the same note if it does what do you flush your airbrushes with to clean them.
i use the harbor freight brush and it keeps clogging in that little metal cap where the paint comes out. Any way to prevent t? I used 1 part distiller water, indoor latex house paint and casting latex. Goes on ok for about a minute, then I have to switch cup caps.
hi allen.ive been following your vids and very helpfull,I managed to sculpt, mould and pull some jason voorhees masks out perfect,I have finished 2 but found when airbrushing the paint job it kept clogging with latex.i used a 3rd latex a 3rd tap water and a bit of acrylic paint for pigment.....do you think my paint mix and that I used tap and not distilled water made it clog up.thankyou allen.
+phelak yes, The minerals in tapwater calls the late text to harden and clock just like the plaster makes it cure and get thick so do the minerals and tapwater that's why you have to use distilled
Thanks, Allen. I have to agree with the others who love that clamp idea. I did have a question: you used the plasti-dip for a gloss effect, but you didn't use it everywhere. Do you use any kind of overall "sealer", or do you find that's not really needed?
New to this stuff been enjoying your videos for some time now. I haven't tried making my own molds, but I bought some foam latex prosthetics and I was curious if this same formula (1/3 of paint, water, and latex) is what you still use and if you recommend it on a prosthetic piece or even actual skin. Otherwise what would you recommend I use on the prosthetic that I can cover my skin in as well so the colors stay true?
Hybrid, or Alcohol based Airbrush Makeup would do the trick! Skin safe, and great for prosthetics! I would not suggest the 1/3 formula for skin. Have a happy Halloween!
I tried using that 10.00 airbrush with one part indoor flat latex house paint, 1 part distilled water, and one part casting latex, but it doesn't work. The airbrush sprays paint for about one second and then just air comes out. I end up having to push the trigger a thousand times just to get a mask halfway done, and I keep running to unclog the paint nozzle every two minutes, and wedging a sewing needle into the tiny metal hole to get the gunk out, and it only works 20 percent of the time. I have no clue what I'm doing wrong. And I have my compressor set almost up to the max. Only air comes out usually. Pretty sure it's the latex screwing it up for me. Any ideas?
Thank you! Awesome information. I have the Pasche Airbrush and afraid to use it. I need lessons on using it for things like tombstones. Not quite ready to jump to mask making yet. I leave that to your VERY capable hands! However, I love watching what your are making and learning from you. :)
+EricSalt88 I like this one- very useful- its noisy but it does not have to be in the room with you. www.homedepot.com/p/Campbell-Hausfeld-3-Gal-Horizontal-Air-Compressor-FP209499AV/203002168
Hi Allen I want to zombify a skull. I plan on making the skull move, eyes, mouth and eyes pryer to adding flesh and skin. I was wondering if you had any ideas on going about adding kin and flesh that looks realistic?
Great tutorial! I just got an airbrush and compressor. I have a question though. I am wanting to paint a mask that has already been painted. What suggestions do you have to prep this mask before I start painting it? Thanks!
Hello, have you heard of the game "little nightmares"? I am trying to make a Halloween costume based on the character the Janitor and was wondering if it is possible to make a mask. I would love the advice and the inspiration!
+Sandi Ebeling I use water because its cheaper and I know it wont remove paint- all the paints in this vid are water based so alcohol could complicate things.
+troy mccombs Yes with the proper use of stencils and washes. It wont give you a finer line than a wide marker but if you plan for it then it can work for you.
I mixed my own indoor acryl paint with liquid latex so I think that is good to go, would it also be possible to paint my orc mask without an airbrush? :)
Can you get a clear matte sealer for like a myers mask so you can seal the acrylic weathering and dry brushing but i don't want it to look shiny? Great channel just subscribed 👍🏼
Hi, your tutorials are really badass! I just got a few questions if you don't mind... i've tried your mix with alcohol, paint and latex but as i mix them it all goes lumpy and impossible to use...what i'm i doing wrong? Second one: what's the difference between latex paint and acrylic one? i've read that 'latex paint' is just a way to call it but it is simply a water based one...transating materials' name from english is always a bit tricky ya know...thank you so much and sorry for the bad english ;)
Giacomo Clerici I use water, latex and latex house paint- not alcohol unless it alcohol based paint. latex pain and acrylic paint are both water based. I use latex house paint.
Latex house paint really is just acrylic paint, so for painting you'd want to just go with the regular latex house paint. The gloss and finishes can be done after you paint the mask with a gloss gesso or some other glossy finish.
I borrowed my friends Dremel today and removed the line with a polishing bit. Worked fine except for one thing-- the latex kept wanting to coil up in the bit. Scared me! Is there any techniques or anything to prevent it from doing that? I imagine it could ruin the Dremel motor.
I did trim it wth cuticle scissors first, but the whole latex of the mask wants to get caught in the fast rotation. Thanks, man, for all the help. I've been doing effects for a long time, but very sporadically. I always get discouraged and quit for a while, then come back into it. What I really suck at is painting. Dry brushing doesn't seem to provide good results and I see a lot of fx people using airbrushes, which I don't have but need to invest in. Besides that, I don't really know how to use them. I hear that fw inks are the best thing to use, paint-wise. Thanks again, man, and if you want, I can send you links to pics of my masks if you wanna take a quick gander :)
I used this method as my base paint and it worked great! Thank you for all the tips! I used acrylic paints for my weathering/aging work. Was curious if you had any advice on sealing it? I have perma wet on hand, but I want a matte finish, not glossy.
MYHauntProduction yes, but I prefer the house paint. Latex house paint is made to flex with the heating and cooling of the house- they expand and contract so there is a flexible base to them already and they adhere to the mask better than acrylics. Also ounce for ounce Latex house paint is way cheaper.
+StiltbeastStudios thanks! Great video btw. Learned a lot from it. Been searching sometime for the best way to paint a latex mask and going to try this.
First... thanks for the tutorials. It has helped me immensely in creating a Greedo mask for my son. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough latex and slush cast it which was a semi failure... ears didn't get fully coated. However, I have more arriving Thursday which is going to cut it close to having it ready for Halloween. Can I paint it right as soon as I take it out of the cast and add the horns? I don't want to have to wait an additional 24 hours afterwards. Also can you wear it the next day? Thanks again!
+Cristina Valdaliso Egerman there is no problem painting it the same day you take it out of the mold and you can wear as soon as the paint is dry, happy Halloween
Love your channel! If you were spraying the latex/house paint/water mix with the harbour freight airbrush what PSI would you run it at? Keep up the great work!
Hello my friend !!!help please !!!!!! please help!!!!Latex house paint as the name of the paint ?there is a photo and the name of the paint? where to buy paint ? and how to mix properly??? Part 1/3 paint 1/3 of the latex and 1/3 part water . how to mix ? thank you friend!!!
Latex house paint is the type of paint. It's for painting houses. Any brand will do fine. Just don't get oil based paint. Get it from a hardware store.
Beautiful Looking mask, I think your paint job Looks amazing! I Need to get an Air Brush, I've been using sponges and paint brushes for years now, and I Was to Harbor Freight 2 days ago!
Great video with awesome tips all along the way. Thanks for taking the time :) Do you have any tips on what to use for a metallic type paint mixture? I haven't been able to find a house paint that's actually metal looking. :(
Extremely helpful! You made it look easy, so I am going to try it. One question - is there an alternative to brush paint a glossy wet look besides Perma-wet that Brad Goodspeed said he uses? Unfortunately I missed your classes at MHC. I hope you come back & teach the series again! Thanks! Keep those videos comin'!
Love the clamp thing! On my last few masks I played with FW Inks on top of a Pros-Aide base coat for adhesion. Sealed the whole thing in with Perma-Wet. So far things have stuck pretty well, but I'm wondering if one day down the road I'll come to regret those choices. Love to pick your brain before I paint my next mask: do you have any thoughts on FW Inks on latex masks? I love the amount of pigment they have and how easily they go through the airbrush, but if there are holes to be poked in the process, I'd rather they get poked before I use them a bunch more. Thanks again Allen for another great tutorial!
Brad Goodspeed Pax paint will pretty much stick to everything so I think you will be alright down the road. FW inks are great I play with them on ocassion.
18:43 Allen sheds a tear because the leather pig is so beautiful.

7 YRS . LATER ! ... still gold !
A much needed how to that I know a lot of people will be glad you did.
Also, thrilled to see my little piggy! Haha
***** YEah lots of folks have asked about this one and I will most likely do another one on it where I do a full base coat.
Did you sculpt this mask? and do you sell them if so?

James Wright I could prolly do that on the next mask painting video.
wicked and wonderful. great stuff, thanks for the tips.
is the mask casting latex that you mix with the 1/3 distilled water and 1/3 house latex paint that stuff called RD-407
it can be, that is a formula- I dont seek it out as most casting latex formulas are pretty similar.
I bought this harbor freight airbrush. Can't seem to get it to work properly, though. I thin the heck out of acrylic paints using distiller water. perfect love it ^_^ great video! i paint all my masks by hand at the moment because i wasn't really sure how to go about air brushing so thanks :)
+Redd Toxin there is a learning curve on airbrushed, but they are an awesome tool.
Thanks man! Great info and tips.
Your techniques are quick and easy, even for the beginner like me. Always looking forward to your tutelage.
Glad you like the channel!
How did you get the sides to hang? Did you create a negative space and cut it after casting it?
Thank you Allen! My wife got me an airbrush kit for Xmas and it's still sitting in the box. Didn't really know were to start. Wish I would have asked for a single stage to get my feet wet with.. Great video, simple for amateurs!

Oh Lord Yeah ! Thank you very much for this video and for sharing some of your knowledge. Your mask is awesome. Thanks again !
I would say no- I dont like their 1/5hp- I use a pancake compressor- Or Paasche has some awesome compressors on their site.
Ok. Thanks
Just wondering....when you mix your casting latex in with your paint. Does it clog your airbrush up. On the same note if it does what do you flush your airbrushes with to clean them.
I love this mask! Thank you for sharing these techniques!
awokennightmare thanks, glad you like it!
The latex house paint: does it matter what type or brand of latex house paint you use, or it doesn't matter as along as it says "latex" on it?
+Felix Valle it does not matter.
What should I do if latex paint gets clogged within an airbrush? I have been using Monster Makers paint and it clogs after about 10 minutes of use.
What if you want to seal a mask and not make it glossy?
If you hand painted an entire mask would you see all the brush streaks?
captain0ldy0da Yes you normally will see some brush strokes unless the paint is thin enough to self level.
Those masks are awesome.
Fright Friend Thank you, glad you like them.
i use the harbor freight brush and it keeps clogging in that little metal cap where the paint comes out. Any way to prevent t? I used 1 part distiller water, indoor latex house paint and casting latex. Goes on ok for about a minute, then I have to switch cup caps.
Haven't strained, yes distilled water
hi allen.ive been following your vids and very helpfull,I managed to sculpt, mould and pull some jason voorhees masks out perfect,I have finished 2 but found when airbrushing the paint job it kept clogging with latex.i used a 3rd latex a 3rd tap water and a bit of acrylic paint for pigment.....do you think my paint mix and that I used tap and not distilled water made it clog up.thankyou allen.
+phelak yes, The minerals in tapwater calls the late text to harden and clock just like the plaster makes it cure and get thick so do the minerals and tapwater that's why you have to use distilled
StiltbeastStudios thanx allen.ill give it a go.
Thanks, Allen.
I have to agree with the others who love that clamp idea.
I did have a question: you used the plasti-dip for a gloss effect, but you didn't use it everywhere.
Do you use any kind of overall "sealer", or do you find that's not really needed?
FrightInFalcon a day or so after its all dried I cot all my masks in original armorall. that's a great protector.
I'm so glad I found your channel! Learning a lot and really getting the bug to get ready for Halloween. It's April already!
+Alan Bycroft go make stuff!
Thank you for again making the time to share your talent with us.
Takai2012 Talent is a strong word, but thank you. Thank you for watching!
Is there a reason you are using destilt water instead of normal tap water, does it have an effect in the end.
+MrStefmister Yes, there is a reason. Tap water has minerals and other stuff in it, and the latex can bond to those bits and clot up.
OLA BUT NO APOLOGY ABLO ENGLISH ... I want to know what type of paint use safety ON LATEX ?
acrylic paint mixed with latex and distilled water is fine as well.
thanks for the airbrush lesson. painting is not one of my strong points. this really helps. thanks
ronald aponte thank you for watching!
AWSOOOOOOOOME!!!!!
Does the paint will peel it off the mask??
Where can I get that sprayer? U got a link for it?
What source do you use to buy your mask casting latex? Are there any other sources less expensive than Monster Makers?
I buy from bity mold supply or black lagoon. latex costs will be going up Im afraid.
Any idea what the UK equivalent of latex house paint is? I've been to a few hardware shops and no one knows what latex house paint is 😅
New to this stuff been enjoying your videos for some time now. Hybrid, or Alcohol based Airbrush Makeup would do the trick! Skin safe, and great for prosthetics! I would not suggest the 1/3 formula for skin. Have a happy Halloween!

+Lane Mitchell If it is not fun then you shouldn't do it.
for sure. I'm going to be getting into mask making myself.
also love the clamps, I see them in my future...
Paint job is amazing but can I just say that design is totally bad ass, thanks for sharing!
+Jeff Mays thank you, glad you like it!
Any ideas?
Are you straining your paint after you mix it? It never hurts to add a bit more water so it flows better. and are you using distilled water?
No strained but yes distilled water
Thank you! Awesome information. I have the Pasche Airbrush and afraid to use it. I need lessons on using it for things like tombstones. Not quite ready to jump to mask making yet. I leave that to your VERY capable hands! However, I love watching what your are making and learning from you. :)
Christene Steffens I suppose Im due for a tombstone video, painted with an airbrush...got it.
StiltbeastStudios I would soooo appreciate it! After all, your my favorite to learn from! :)
what would you use that is not glossy as like a sealer or top coat. Something like perma wet but matt or satin.
+ClockWork Marquis liquitex has lots of good choices for that
dude, thank you for making this video! you're very easy to follow, and you helped me out a lot! thanks a ton, man!
glad you liked it!
would I use a mate finish spray on my mask to protect the paint job? If I didn't want it to look shiny. but want to keep the paint from rubbing off.
I'm not very experienced in the field, but I've never known anyone to do that
Sure, its pretty common to do that- some people use armorall.
great video was wondering if there was a airbrush compresser that you would recommend to paint latex paints that wouldn't break the bank thanks
+EricSalt88 I like this one- very useful- its noisy but it does not have to be in the room with you.

Hi Allen I want to zombify a skull. I plan on making the skull move, eyes, mouth and eyes pryer to adding flesh and skin. I was wondering if you had any ideas on going about adding kin and flesh that looks realistic?
Jason Cutrone Im a big fan of plastic wrap and a heat ggun, then stain to taste. I have a few videos on that technique.
How does one clean an airbrush when using latex?
dont let it dry out in the airbrush, and keep running a cleaner through it till it blows clear. I use car windshield fluid.
Great tutorial! I just got an airbrush and compressor. I have a question though. I am wanting to paint a mask that has already been painted. What suggestions do you have to prep this mask before I start painting it? Thanks!
Great tutorial, do you have a mold for your masks, what liquid latex do you use? any videos one that process.
I have a latex mask playlist you should check out- yes I make all my own molds.
wich 2 airbrushes do you use and where to get them ? thx grtz
I use a Paasche H from their website, and a quick change airbrush from Harbor Freight.
Hello, have you heard of the game "little nightmares"? I am trying to make a Halloween costume based on the character the Janitor and was wondering if it is possible to make a mask. I would love the advice and the inspiration!
Do you ever use alcohol to thin the mixture, or is it just better to use water? Thanks. Love, love, love your tutorials.
+Sandi Ebeling I use water because its cheaper and I know it wont remove paint- all the paints in this vid are water based so alcohol could complicate things.
Thank you. You are amazing. Love your work.
Do you still sell the pig masks?
I'm starting a new mask for our haunt this year. It's Bigfoot, any suggestions?
can you use the 10 dollar airbrush to paint a whole mask? Even the details?
+troy mccombs Yes with the proper use of stencils and washes. It wont give you a finer line than a wide marker but if you plan for it then it can work for you.
What kind of stencils and washes would be needed? Thanks for the reply :)
I mixed my own indoor acryl paint with liquid latex so I think that is good to go, would it also be possible to paint my orc mask without an airbrush? :)
+JustBattleDamage it sure is, you don't need one.
thank you!
Can you get a clear matte sealer for like a myers mask so you can seal the acrylic weathering and dry brushing but i don't want it to look shiny? Great channel just subscribed 👍🏼
Amazing as always Allen! Now I want to redo all my masks that i've created!
Hill's Horror Haunted House Go make stuff!
I have a latex dragon mask that's painted green and I was thinking about painting it black but would it mess up the mask?
not at all, it would make it black.
ok because i heard that ussing paint would mess up the mask and cause some of it to break off.
I LOVE, JUST LOVE YOUR CONTENT !
THANK YOU !!!! For using that much time to both entertain and teach all of us in the new generation :)
TheDvd3000 You are so welcome! Im glad that you enjoy the videos!
what is the best thing to trim the edges with?
+john davis I use electricians scissors, small and sharp.
I can't grap the place were you bought the $10 airbrush. I have listen to it many time (2:20 of the video).
+Marc Montminy harborfreight is the company- its the quick change airbrush

StiltbeastStudios thank you! I can't figure out how i understood 'alcohol' :) Very useful tips anyway, keep up the good work!
The latex house paint you use, is it flat or semi gloss or does it matter?
Latex house paint really is just acrylic paint, so for painting you'd want to just go with the regular latex house paint. The gloss and finishes can be done after you paint the mask with a gloss gesso or some other glossy finish.
Cheney is right, I just use the flat

jjab99 Thank you for watching.
What's best to use to get rid of the seam line? A Dremel or hot xacto knife? I just pulled a mask tonight and need to seam.
I borrowed my friends Dremel today and removed the line with a polishing bit. Worked fine except for one thing-- the latex kept wanting to coil up in the bit. Scared me! Is there any techniques or anything to prevent it from doing that? I imagine it could ruin the Dremel motor.
I trim the flash down with scissors then I dremel the rest off. that way there are no long strands to wind up.
Thanks again, man, and if you want, I can send you links to pics of my masks if you wanna take a quick gander :)
please show me some pics!! and I love drybrushing- I use it all the time on masks.

I used this method as my base paint and it worked great! Thank you for all the tips! I used acrylic paints for my weathering/aging work. Was curious if you had any advice on sealing it? I have perma wet on hand, but I want a matte finish, not glossy.
I use a matte acrylic sealer.
Awesome work thanks does this work with acrylic paints instead of house latex or do you need the house latex?
MYHauntProduction yes, but I prefer the house paint. Latex house paint is made to flex with the heating and cooling of the house- they expand and contract so there is a flexible base to them already and they adhere to the mask better than acrylics. Also ounce for ounce Latex house paint is way cheaper.
StiltbeastStudios thanks so much great information.
thanks for watching!
thanks from italy
fakbrut thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video buddy it was great
Paul Legge thanks for the support!
Is there any way to paint latex masks without an airbrush?
+Kyvaille Edge sure, I drybrush pretty often.
Was wondering what type of Latex house paint Interior or exterior or does it matter as long as it says latex paint on it?
+chrisc8141 exterior is better actually.
+StiltbeastStudios thanks! Great video btw. Learned a lot from it. Been searching sometime for the best way to paint a latex mask and going to try this.
It works really well for me. let me know how it turns out.
+StiltbeastStudios I grabbed some and notice it has primer included in it. Will this be ok? Wanted to be sure before I used it on a mask.
sure, thats fine
How do you mix that base color?
its just the latex mask paint with more water added- thats it.
cool intro and music and mask
+Awesomecat3345 The Awesomest Thank you, glad you like the video.
First... thanks for the tutorials.
+Jay Eldon about 45 psi
Love it
glad ya liked it!
Great video! One question thou. what did you use for the wash? Is it an actual stain?
+Info Account (Black 13 Tattoo) I used Tandy leather gel antique stain- saddle tan

I haven't been able to find a house paint that's actually metal looking. :(

@StiltbeastStudios so I can't get the one in the video
not anymore, did you see warpiggin on our site? its very similar.
Extremely helpful! You made it look easy, so I am going to try it. One question - is there an alternative to brush paint a glossy wet look besides Perma-wet that Brad
Goodspeed said he uses? Unfortunately I missed your classes at MHC. I hope you come back & teach the series again! Thanks! Keep those videos comin'!
Laura Guida five min epoxy is not as flexible, but it is cheap and readily available- it also dries very glossy.
StiltbeastStudios Thanks for answering my question!
Awesome video, Allen. I am going to try this. Where do you get the plasti-dip glossifier.
+Beth Williams auto parts store or dipyourcar.com
