Have some fantastic cars in stock. Regardless of what job you’re doing everything has its ups and downs. Keep your standards the same I would say , and crack on with it. God mate, terrible, on fiat 500 it's probably a drop link, water leak, taste it to see if its anti freeze (!) best a full clutch at 50k,itd ready for one, if it's a diesel, hopefully not a dual mass as well, say a full new clutch helps them going forward, quote full retail for the job and go half, don't go in at the price you pay, chain, obviously bad news, leaver on seat, main dealer only be a few quid, just take up handbrake, do both yourself, re the saab, it's a classic car, bit cheeky to moan about it, I'd just say no, it goes with running a classic car, buy an i10 if you don't want trouble, expecting you to run somebody's classic is a bit rich. I've just sent a guy 500 to get a turbo done on a quasgui I sold 2 mths ago, his garage said turbo, hopefully it is, 60 plate, 100k on, sold at a reasonable price, as you say people expect virtually everything covered. I drive my cars a lot tbh, back from auction, greggs a couple of times (!) usually most things flag up, I get very few warranty claims tbh, but yes it's very disheartening when you've tried your best. Re the saab, just say sorry you don't warranty classics, tbh bud you want to avoid your barn finds, they haven't done you much good.

It travelled a long way back to Ireland without any issues. I feel a one month warranty on the types and age of the cars you sell is as much as you should offer. You go beyond all expectations in prepping your cars with an advisory free MOT. I would happily buy a car from you knowing how much you care about your vehicles and customers.

Got home and my GM vehicle had oil in the coolant. So 24hrs after purchase I contact the seller, only for them to say their 30 day warranty does not cover the issue. What chance do you have. I'm in the trade so fixed it myself. You James are a super fair honest chap.

  • @dennisphoenix1

James most of these warranty claims are a joke . The 32 year old Saab that needs a turbo , no chance . The fiat 500 that has a rattle , nope - wear and tear . The water under the car could be from the air conditioning drain . The missing seat adjuster is trim, doesn't affect the cars driveability. That's 3 sorted straight away. The engine bay noise could be an auxiliary belt pulley , probably air conditioning related again. People expect the world on a ten year old car or one with 120,000 miles on it . Expectations are too high or your customers are naive .

Indeed bought a car from a mechanic last year, we are friends with his wife mainly. Noisy clutch bearing started a month later, drop links toast even though they pass an MOT as there's not play they clunk, top mount collapsed and the spring snapped on OF. Discovered after a while that second gear only likes to go in if held only when cold, it's had a new clutch and fresh fluid. So possibly play in the gear linkage most likely gearbox related. Not once did I go running back to the mechanic it's a 15 year old French car. Someone had spent close to 3k on it over the last 4 years in maintenance, old cars fail on components.

*About the SAAB turbo* most turbos go out because of oil starvation, the small tube that feeds oil to the turbo gets gunked-up from the heat and gets clogged, most mechanics just replace the turbo, which in about a 3 months leads to another replacement, so ANYTIME YOU REPLACE A TURBO, you replace the oil lines as well. As far as you replacing the turbo, I think you need to do that because it's is a major component of the engine, however YOU SHOULD ONLY BE OBLIGED TO REPLACE IT WITH A USED ONE, if the customer wants a new one, they need to pay half.

Just under a year ago, I purchased a 2018 Hyundai Ioniq from a Hyundai dealer and was supplied with a years warranty on the whole car. For 10 months there were no issues but towards the end of the warranty, a fault developed with the mechanism which allows you to unlock the car by just touching the door handle. I approach a Hyundai dealer who confirmed with the warranty company that the item was covered however, the job was going to cost £600 of which a good proportion was labour to replace the handle and the warranty were not prepared to pay the high hourly rate of the dealer - so would I like to pay £200 towards the cost - needless to say they got a dusty answer and the car now lives without this feature! As far as I am concerned aftermarket warranties are of very limited value

If I were you I would check what Saab say needs replacing at 70,000 miles.
Radiator and much much more. I know as I once bought a 93 coupe at 4 years old that had done 90,000 miles. Mine came with a full Saab approved used car with a very long list of everything that had been replaced as per service schedule. It still had picky faults as in the ignition lock has a “ring” around it that reads the key which was replaced as was the motorised aerial. So I bought a 4 year old car that still looked as new but I paid £4000 for it including new Saab alloys and tyres and I had it 10 years!
I loved it but when petrol rapidly increased it became too expensive to run as my daily commute usually invoked lots of traffic jams.
My advice to anyone is it’s ok buy a 4 year old car with almost 100,000 miles from a main dealer as long as it’s had the relevant work done to make it an approved used car.
As for your customer spotting a bit of water under the car but levels are ok, it will be the air con. No fault but an effect of the science!

Water on the driveway could be condensation coming from the exhaust. More so if he uses his air conditioning or AC lines. This is what I do, if the vehicle is priced at a reasonable price I just pay it, I usually get extended warranties anyways. A car dealership is more likely to help you out if you do not nickel and dime them to death. They are in business to make money as well.

If your warranty covered a replacement engine then it would be fair to replace the turbo, but very few warranties I have seen apart from those on a brand new vehicle cover engine replacements. Fair wear & tear in my opinion as the car was what it was. The turbo went on my newly bought, fully serviced vehicle at 39,000 miles. Luck of the draw with Turbos.

Here in Perth, Western Australia, as dealer, we don't have to warranty any car which is more than 12 years old or 180,000km (approx 112,000 miles). Australian Consumer Law means the car has to perform as could reasonably be expected. That old Saab wouldn't qualify for anything.

Most likely clutch master cylinder on the C-Max, very common problem, simple diagnosis, if there are no signs of clutch fluid leaking from the bell housing then the pressure will be lost at the master cylinder.
Quick test I've done on those before is to start the engine, select a gear and then hold the clutch pedal down for a minute or two as if you were sitting in traffic, if the clutch eventually starts to bite and then becomes difficult to deselect a gear without stalling it then that means it's losing pressure in the master cylinder. The pressure can only be lost one of three ways - internally within the master cylinder, externally from a damaged pipe or hose, or externally from the slave cylinder. The latter two should be quick to inspect and rule out.
The only other reason for the pedal to stick to the floor if it's not a hydraulic fault is in conjunction with a failed dual mass flywheel, it can vibrate and cause it to jam up, so unless youve also got dual mass flywheel symptoms then its quite likely master cylinder

I must be the polar opposite of some of these people, my motorbike had a couple of little things that could have been done under warranty but I just fixed them all myself. As you are self managing your warranties it is vital that you clearly, explicitly and fully document everything that is included and also excluded, with no ambiguity. For major items you should stipulate mileage limits. Clarity in the contract is required, not just recommended. You can get predefined documents from industry specialists.

Alot of it comes down to what we choose to retail. A 66 plate with 50k master cylinder etc, just bad luck (or the reason why it was px'd in the first place).
An older or much higher mileage car (125k on the yeti) and the warranty claims have to be built into the profit. The leggier stuff (mileage) is not necessarily bad but should have a higher margin built in to cover these situations which could be more common.
To me it depends what I want to retail. If i want to retail older, leggier stuff then this has to be built into margins to cover consumer rights act etc.
Newer, less leggy stuff will operate on smaller margins but we hope would result in less claims.
Consumer rights has us for 6 months anyway to a degree either way especially if operating with finance co's internal or external.

Non return valve in oil filter. Save £1 on a cheap oil filter. Battery health check and enough fuel to get to a garage is a reasonable expectation. I called out a dealer for chunks falling off perished tyres and cracked/leaking coolant tank for parts only. If I needed full warranty I'd need to buy new, which I don't.
It's a tough call managing people's expectations without sabotaging the sale.
With the state of our 3rd world cart tracks in Devon I wouldn't warranty suspension components, seen some bad stuff go through MOT that should not have.

In regards to the saab i would offer half at the most on a car that age, I bought an R36 passat a few years back, within days had issues with dsg box. Took it to VW dealers as the place i bought it from was over 100 miles away, they said the mechatronic unit needed replacing, cost was just shy of £3k. The dealer i bought it from had took the car as a part ex so i reckon the previous owner knew about the issue and got shut, i couldnt prove/disprove wether the dealer knew. Anyway the dealer agreed to go half on the repair and i accepted so £1500 each. I thought that was fair, we were both had over by previous owner in my mind. When you buy a second hand car especially a really old one you know your taking a chance.

James I think you should warranty them all apart from the turbo.
Seriously a 32 year old motor…you buyer a classic for the pain and enjoyment when it finally runs right for a month and nothing more.
If it they were my cars I’d probably warranty them as it just gets people out of your hair. Gives you a good rep and when it’s sorted it’s a relief.
I don’t provide any warranties with paperwork. People always come back with a problem. Warranties are a waste of money. I just tell them first 30 days I’ll cover anything apart from tyres, bodywork etc. 3 months engine and gearbox. If anything ever went seriously wrong E.g new engine or gearbox I just refund them rather than mess about with repairs, time constraints and warranties. Everything else I just cover. I’d rather just get rid of them, move on to the next job than argue about it.
I recently sold a 2011 80k Corsa for £2495. The customer contacted me just over a week later complaining about a crack on the front bumper they’d noticed. The bumper was a different shade all together which didn’t seem to bother them. They also mentioned the drivers seat wasn’t folding (3 door) It ended up being a 2mm stone chip, but when they dropped the car off for the touch up. They asked me if the parcel shelf string was covered under warranty as one was missing and they’d seen one on eBay for £2. They also told me they’d never actually used the back seat on their previous car but needed the seat to work.
I was pretty annoyed that they’d looked around the car before purchasing and then made a request about a stone chip. But when they said this about the parcel shelf string I couldn’t help but laugh. Anyway I touched the chip in, got the string and the seat seemed to work fine with a tug. They’ve been happy since touch wood.
