@@HighPeakAutos As soon as I was 2 mins in, my spidey sense was triggered by those wheels. I rely on your videos to remind me not to let my heart rule my head with pretty cars! This coupe is gorgeous to look at and I guess with access to low cost parts and a lot of tlc it could fo back to its former glory. As you say, a new one would be £100k in the day. This one has a lump thats good for another 10 years so even if ut cost 10k to make it good again, maybe its worth it. For me though the cost of tax and insurance make it a no-no. I think I'd try and sell to an enthusiast, should get your £1500 back, or else parts. The engine alone could ferch that if it doesnt have issues. Best of luck.
You know I had one of these. Loved it. Most of those engine lights are due to the weak battery and will go when you fix the alternator. You can purchase reconditioned struts from various places with long warranties for around £600 each. Dronfields are good for breaker parts. Get it fixed 😊
Matt loves a challenge. Wonder if he'll bite? Its a lot of car for very little money and the mileage is very low. I guess the car lying about hardly turning a wheel has been its downfall. Such a shame.
Awesome response. Especially after me saying in a previous comment that it would be such a shame to scrap this car but it surely must be scrap. Let’s get viewers, in the know involved and see who can reach out with help to restore this car at the best price.
Still though even at £600 each for all 4 corners that's £2400 before you touch anything else on the car. Be interesting to know how much it'd take to make it pass MOT...not that it'd be sensible
Think this one has to go….to repair this car properly, and will probably need a full respray…it will be 15k plus, and unless your planning on starting a collection…makes no sense even for you Matt…..I await your decision
But the struts are just the start. Even if most of the faults are related to the battery, there is so much rust and rot underneath. It sounds like rear disks and pads are needed, plus all the various ball joints and so on. I don't think this is a commercial proposition, but it might be a great project car for someone who has the time to do it.
For ESP and ABS, begin with turning the steering wheel from full right to full left with your foot on the brakes. It might fix the issue, if the was only due to low battery or battery change.
The minute you said what you'd bought I knew it would be a money pit. I rescued 2 S Classes 01 and 04 and they broke my heart. Battery drains constantly and nothing wants to work after! I'd export it and let that beautiful V8 pump water in Africa for a 100 years...and keep that lovely steering wheel as a souvenir. I'm finished with Mercs
I just never understood how Mercedes convinced the world their money pits were a luxurious experience tbh. Glad you broke away from their influence mate
@@baronvonjo1929 forgive Mercedes thinking a CLK 320CDI Sport O8 would be a good idea...oil cooler was leaking and just about everything else rattled underneath for MOT 💨🙈 oil cooler is a major job on the V6 diesels 💰 finally got it sorted and sold. No more 💉💉💉
Reminds me of my old Scirocco back in the day. 15 previous owners, plus at least 3 or 4 who'd never had the logbook, one immobiliser fob, part time dashboard electrics. It was a shed but a lovable shed.
I used a company in Holland, abcspecialists, to part exchange my old ABC struts for refurbished ones at a fraction of the cost Mercedes charge for new units. Very pleased with the quality and service from them. Recommended.
Hi Matt, great video. Thanks for taking the time to post. I think you should restore it to its former glory and then raffle it to your subscribers. Also, I don't think it'll be long before a Discovery channel snaps you up for Wheeler Dealer type show. 😁👍🤞
As always great video Matt - These are great cars - I have a 2001 (Y Reg) that I purchased in 2017 with just over 25k on the clock ( I did pay top whack which was about £7.5k) - it's in Almadine Black with a light interior so it looks stunning - it was hardly used until 2013 when the mileage was10.5k I think it may then have changed hands as that year it did 4k miles and had £2.5k service (16 new plugs!). It's not been a daily driver, I've done on average 2k miles per year so it's just under 40k miles now. I use Merx Cheshire an independant in Macclesfield for all my mechanical work they do a great job I've had two or three services over my time with pads and discs replaced - mainly due to standing outside over winter - no issues with the ABC - and it's been perfectly reliable. It's awesome to drive - corners flat with the ABC on, the ride is smooth and a great engine that pulls at 80 mph like it's just getting started, plus on steady motorway runs I get low 30's fuel consumption, the interior is luxury - and everything works (altough the distronic cruise control is temperamental, and I've had simillar but not as bad issues with the glove box/central console) and it has a fridge between the back seats !! So great cars worth saving - but I think yours is to far gone - maybe before pulling it apart you could consider what are the good bits look for one that was tatty iinside, possibly with a few faults and maybe a bigger mileage therefore again cheap - then see if if you could combine the two to save one then sell off the parts - I know probably just a double loss but they are such great cars for small amounts of money.
Cheap to buy, but still premium price maintenance. A friend of mine had CL600 V12, 03 plate in Burgundy paint with cream interior. With all windows down in summer time, cruising was amazing.... Almost impossible to see spotless CL's on the roads these days...
@@Conservator. I had CL500, but V12 CL600 is a different pair of shoes. When I paid 13k for my V8, he paid nearly 28k for V12, both cars were same 03 reg (2003). But anyway, when you got mint condition and you can afford maintenance All CL's are great to drive.
This is a very beautiful car, in its day it would have been absolutely cutting edge, both in terms of luxury and refinement. Sadly though it’s day has long gone, it really does appear to be uneconomical to repair, however that said, it would be a shame to see it broken up for spares, it is a future classic, and the mileage is very low. I’m glad I don’t have to decide its fate, I just hope you reach a decision you’re happy with Matt❤.
it's amazing that Mercedes, once the byword for motoring lifelong quality, dropped the ball so far in that era. The S Class of the period, the W220 was also shoddily put together.
All German cars have lost a lot of reputation now. It seems it has been done with purpose to destroy their home industry, much in the same way our own UK industry was purposely destroyed. People blame bad management, unions, etc etc but really these decisions are made to destroy the West by people whose names and purposes remain mostly unknown. We need a make the West great again movement with the spotlight on those high elites and their willing saps that did this to our countries and brought us to war.
This era of MB was when the accountants ran the show. Part worn tyres and a dodgy service history. Scrapyard is calling. Cheers Matt another good appraisal.
As there's not many left; break it, work out which bits are good to sell on and scrap the rest. You could probably get some money for the personalised number plate as well. They're lovely motors, but this one would be more money & hassle than it's worth trying to put back on the road. May as well use it to keep other on the road.
I own the same model. While many think quality is bad, the CL was one of the few exceptions of the era. It was the top of the line flagship for Mercedes at the time. When well taken care of these cars are very reliable. Sadly, this one is seriously neglected. Also, the C215 chassis rarely rusts, unlike the W220. Previous owners have ruined this car.
I thought the wheels looked odd, ascribed it to the tyres... Great to see the SPR Autos operation, would be good to include some of your other 'regulars' so to speak. Good one Matt, hope it survives the parts bin LOL
I had a couple of these back in 2000 ish and loved to drive them, just paid out for general servicing and cheaper to run than you think when all sorted. This one though I would stick in the ring and transfer the problem. You can’t save em all Matt
Another brutally honest video, well done again Matt 🎉 - I guess the question is, for a premium vehicle with relatively low mileage, why so many issues.!?? Thank you.
My childhood dream car. Still absolutely stunning. However, I think it's past it's time and although £2-3k is very tempting for a good condition example ABS, ABC, battery drain issues are always there, road tax and insurance are expensive so really not a good idea to get one now.
Again, Matt loving exactly the same cars that I do! The CL has always been on my list but I've never risked buying one because of Mercedes' build quality issues in this era. I'm afraid this one is too far gone and, regrettably, not worth saving. Move on Matt.
Paid 2500 for ours 5 years ago great car .. just service it and change the hydraulic suspension oil and filters aswell we had the brake lines done front to back and a new coil pack that’s it in 5 years 👍🏽
Hey Matt , I bought a 51 plate 2 owner car cl600 v12 back in 2021, it was a car I always liked so went for v12 only bcoz it was the most cleanest car in that CL market as I really was looking for cl55. An elderly couple owned it since 2003 and always kept indoor garaged by themselves on an estate in the south . I finally got used to it and really loved the way it drove, when I looked at this one you bought it’s absolutely shot from underneath where as mine was like the day it left the factory! I owned for 2 memorable years , even the MOT guy said it was amazingly so clean so shortly after I sold the car one cold November to a collector/car enthusiast from Scotland. I sure do hope this new owner looks after it 😢. I been looking into these again but cannot find one like the example I had . These cars at first seem risky investments but it soon becomes worth it as these cars grow on you one way or another!!
Don't give up Matt. Get Dronsfield to sort out your parts. Second hand parts will save a fortune. Ask them to take part in your video and perhaps show us all what they can do, with this rather un cared for gem. I'm sure that they can get this back on the right side of decent for a couple of quid. Tackle the essential first. You were looking for a project and this is what you have. Either that or give it away to someone you don't like. Good luck and keep us updated. This could be a serial .
It's a pity most Mercedes get to be so badly maintained! I've had a old (1998) where most of the troubles were regular maintenance and correcting the crap previous owners did to the car. Many of those supposedly to "save money". As in total failure! Properly maintained these are awesome cars.
The CLK is just a better option if you want a coupé from this era. Not as complicated or expensive to run. Based on C-class running gear and E-class interior
One of my neighbours has both a clk200 kompresser and a cl500 as well as a r129 sl500. They're great cars and I think I prefer the clk. The cl500 and sl500 he has doesn't get driven often unfortunately because of the ULEZ but he doesn't want to get rid of them🤷🏽♂️. The clk was bought simply for that reason to avoid the ULEZ charge😂
Great video as always. The cars not had part warn tyres on it, it’s just had a cheap puncture repair where they mark the tyre where the valve is, so when they put the tyre back on the rim they don’t need to rebalance the wheel.
The parent’s neighbours had one of these back in 2001 or so. I loved it but never thought it was quite up to the standards of the old 126 series SEC coupes.
Another must watch video! Personally I've never understood the interest in Mercedes, especially from this period. A neighbour has a 2002 S600 V12 which is falling to pieces and far beyond repair, imagine the cost new! My Lexus LS from the same period out classes them for quality and took us on a fautless European road trip. I guess it's badge snobbery?
Part it out or give it to Transformotion to sort it! It has a strong loyal following so should make a decent video series 😁 When it's fixed it can be raffled, should make some money in the end!
Once you have done all the lights on the dash, you still have all the suspension and body parts to fix. I sold an old S class 500 SE and the guy who bought it sold it to an exporter who shipped it to Nigeria. They love them for taxiwork and are not fazed by things we consider as essential safety issues! I got £1800 in the end and I can probably guarantee my old car is still going strong. It had 127k on the clock when I sold it. Great car!
Hi Matt, for me, it’s all the rust that was the final straw. Is it really safe? I would break this down for parts, there are plenty more Merc projects out there and you are still recycling it. Great video as usual! I love watching these!
Ebay, Gumtree as 'resto project' for enthusiast in my humble opinion. Back then the built quality wasn't any different on a CL/S Class than to a C Class. MB made thousands of vehicles with a poor batch of steel. I had a 2001/51 W220 S320 in silver that corroded in exactly the same places. Had it repaired under MB warranty, a massive job. New rear arch sections, bottom of all the doors and new front wings. Both sides painted. The repair work was that good it showed up the rest of the car. Usual story. Best part of this CL is that wonderful V8. Good luck Matt!
It's a gorgeous car and such a shame to see it dismantled, but unless you're going to invest in it as a passion project to keep for yourself, I'd sell it for parts if I were in your position. Looking forward to seeing what you decide to do!
I have just bought a 53 plate CLK500 with 71k on the clock, looks mint all the electrics apart from the cigarette lighter work and it has no obvious rust. Just waiting for my merc trained mechanic to get back from his holiday then we can look underneath. Fingers crossed. I am impressed with your shop so I may be bringing it to you.
Unfortunately most of the buttons don't work! You'd be givin' the little b@st@rds refunds and dealing with solicitors letters claiming for "alarm and distress" issues due to flat battery. It's a scapper.
Get it done up back to factory brand new documenting all the work and raffle it off. Everyone will love seeing the transformation and I am sure lots would buy a £10-£15 ticket.
I feel your pain matt well done for trying the quality in that car is shocking with such low mileage, my pal has a 01 focus with 126k on the clock just passed its test no advisories, just goes to show 👍
Change the ABC filter and then check the ABC lines at the rear suspension arms where they rub through. If you get away with that, change the fluid as well. Check the wiring in the door jams as well if the speakers fail cos that door hinge is a bast... and the central locking fails but if all good.... relax and cruise.
Hi Matt , you could do a pre-raffle on raffle shack? . Rules could be something like if you raise £7000 you’ll agree to do the work and pass the car to the winner , if you don’t sell enough tickets then refund or just raffle the cash. That way nobody losses and we get to save another great classic motor 👍🏽
If it was me, I would get an uprated battery, alternator and coilovers on it (leave it in the most comfortable settings for obvious reasons. It will be thiugh, a lot cheaper than replacing all the struta etc). Get the electrics overhauled and welding where needed, and it (should) be good to go! No doubt this'll cost 3- 4 times the value of the car at present, but if you're a risk taker, these could increase in value as the supply of these decrease (a lot of them rot, get scrapped etc). And an old merc is always in demand, look at (dare i say it), the value of old SLs and SECs....some of them would've been dirt cheap at one point or another
Merc CL500!! I clicked on this video straight away too. What a beautiful car. I love old Mercs. Unfortunately this era wasn't the best for the company. I love the shape, and for that brief moment when they go right, the power. Great content. P.S. loved the video about the low mileage Saab. 👌
I have to disagree. This car´s condition is totally ex-owners fault.Technically those millennium era MB´s are among the best they have ever made.Rust was,of course, an issue in many cars.If somebody wants to buy a reliable, still modern and comfortable old Mercedes,go for a well kept W210,W220..
Great editing, great audio guys. Yeah, this is the video I needed to realise I should stick with my CLK. I can only imagine the R230 also being a nightmare after several hands
As was mentioned these are getting pretty rare so by the time you get all the work done it might well be an expensive classic. I'm not sure how many of us would be still alive to see it though. It might be worth it for someone who has experience on this vehicle and can do a lot of the work themselves so doesn't have to pay for all the labour. They would have to have the time and enthusiasm to try to find parts. Without that I can't see it being worth it sadly.
A few years ago I had a CL500 (albeit the newer model). You do need deep pockets to run them. The MOT flagged that all 4 shocks were starting to rust, which would be a bill of £4k for parts alone. Also 3 of the 21 inch standard wheel were buckled due to the skinny tyres offering no protection to the wheels for potholed UK roads. This would mean another £2k for second hand wheels. I had to move it on, as it was soon about to cost a lot to keep going. Shame, as it was a lovely car to drive, and as you say the engines will run for 250k. This still doesn't stop me looking for them on Autotrader from time to time. Maybe one day I'll buy another...... some people never learn!
It would be interesting to find out whether any of the previous 15 owners lived in a salt mine. In my opinion, the underside corrosion is probably the most worrying aspect of this £100k+ leviathan. PS. You're right Matt, the wheels look as though they've come off an A180. It's got to be spares - the engine could see your £1,500 back if you can sort the warning lights. Anything else you can sell, would be a bonus but a bit of a faff. Mercedes owners club perhaps?
I absolutely love that! What a proper statement car. Shame its a little rough, but I am sure with some (mild) over spending and a good buff, it will be good to go! In all seriousness though, as much as I want to say its worth fixing, I sadly think this one is just that little bit too far gone. Definitely a nice donor car though with that low milage engine!
I had a 2005 CL55 that I put 235,000 miles on and loved every time I drove it………..AFTER ripping out the entire ABC system and replacing it with coil-overs and a normal power steering pump. Other than ABC, it was nearly bullet proof and faster than just about anything else
Matt Its such a shame but if you break it down for parts you will easily get your money back look at the seats alone . Then the engine etc. it's not economically viable. unless ..... You did it up to be the best CL500 there ever was and then stored it in a garage and then when your around 60 years old it will be worth a fortune..... But is that worth doing great video thank you once again for sharing
Unbelievably I’ve found one Autotrader even cheaper (for £999), good lord even the tax is £395 a year… but it does state the next MOT is due on 23/02/2018… what could possibly go wrong😂 from an era of Fisher Price quality Mercs… I’d rather trust my 1990 190E from better days! Suggest you try your hand at banger racing!
Matt! Awesome cars these CL500's one of my favourite cars of all time, especially with that 5.0 V8, I was close to buying one of these recently as they are dirt cheap now, however as shown in the video they are all rotten underneath and need upwards of £3000 spending on them so make them half decent. Such a shame as they are iconic... As much as it pains me to say it dude I'd break it for spares and see what money you get back... Then buy another V8😅
Hi Matt, you could get an aftermarket suspension kit for these I believe, around £1500. Just a thought, but would be great to save it, it’s all the car anyone would ever want, for once heart over head is justified! Best of luck 👍
SAM module damage due to water ingress, ABC going bang, earth fault & constant flat expensive battery. 😂 Check air scoop under windscreen is not blocked & loom in door not damaged. Good luck. 👍
Unfortunately, it has to be broken up for parts. Far too much corrosion on the underside, so possibly a big spend there, bodywork/paint issues another couple of grand, electrical issues, suspension issues, engine management issues, wheels, I would think that you are looking at £10k minimum just to get it back on the road. You'll definitely overspend on this one. Take care.
My mate has just bought one with 1 previous owner. It’s in good condition and has passed its latest MOT. He’s going to to spend an extra 2k on it, fortunately all cosmetic but of course new spark plugs and an oil/filter change. As his is a good example it’s an absolutely lovely car. More toys than a 2023 Kia! Soft closing doors etc. The engine is one of the best Mercedes have made and will outlive most. I say spend about 4K and An enthusiast will want to buy it even if there is no profit. Worth preserving?
These big powerful second hand Mercs are going around trying to get up to their original value in how much work they need doing 😂 Brilliant video, I enjoyed the walk around your brother did to see how bad it was
The ABC suspension does indeed have steel springs - in conjunction with hydraulic pistons. I happen to have a complete set for the CL laying around :). Strange with the corrosion, I slaughtered a CL600 for parts and the body is made of Alu and magnesium + plastic so I wonder if the CL500 is made from steel?
I bought one 6 years ago with 78k miles on from a chap in London, he went to the geneva motor show and decided he had to have one, he ordered one of the first,it was a 2000 model V8 cl500 , the chap flew to Germany to pick it up and drove the car back, he absolutely adored it, kept every bit of paperwork, even the plane tickets! He paid around £80000 for it and i managed to get it off eBay for £2200!. The design and engine and features on the car were ahead of its time, but alas poorly maintained hydraulic suspension fluid changes ( thank the Mercedes maintenance recommendations for that) killed the suspension pump and caused problems with the suspension legs which made themselves apparent around a week of me owning the car, so with replacement parts being very rare and expensive due to the age of the car i sold it at a considerable loss to avoid the expense, the bodywork the car was solid, no electrical gremlins apparent everything worked apart from the suspension but what a car... comfort style elegance and power in abundance for the price of a high end pushbike
Hey Matt! These have always been a huge favourite of mine too! the last great Bruno Sacco design before he retired. It’s an absolutely beautiful elegant design. However This one is past it mate , honestly I’m the biggest fan like you are but it would be 10k easy to bring that back to a nice reliable road going car… I’d say part it out mate and move on. While not particularly rare so you shouldn’t need to ‘rescue’ a shitbox as this one is…plus it’s got no service history and the litany of faults and bodgy issues and poor maintenance it really isn’t worth restoring. There are others about in much better condition and better maintained. Oh and btw those alloys are period correct and most likely original despite what your mechanic said. They are right for the car. Cheers and love the channel as always 👌🏼
I had a 2000 model back in the day, bought it with only 43k on the clock. The rust on the doors, c pillar and bonnet are ally corrosion, mine had the same loose door controls - the seats not working is most likely the door wiring harness - mine decided to move the seat forward at 70 after going over a large bump 😮. Sold mine in the end due to the endless issues although it is still on the road! At least your ABC is working, those parts are worth a fortune.
Hi Matt. You're videos have ALWAYS been incredibly watchable, but recently you've upped your game. That production team of yours are earning their keep! Regarding this particular vehicle, you're in "Car SOS-esque" territory. Nothing wrong with that as far as I'm concerned, but it's not your core business, is it? The sane decision is to break it for spares. Or do you have a cunning plan......?!?
No more than five or six miles away from Matt's garage is a 500 SEC project that shows how things can go wrong. It's in the process of being converted into a cabriolet! It's been sitting in the same spot covered by plastic sheeting for over five years. Well, actually the sheeting collapsed into the body about four years ago so now there's more water in it than the Titanic .
This cl is newer than mine and has done 100 thousand less miles than mine but is massively worse than mine. I also paid 1500 quid. Mines done 175k and is an 01 plate but the rust underneath is nowhere near this bad. They’re definitely worth saving due to how rare they are and how bloody good they look. Ive had a major gearbox oil leak and done 400 miles on a dry gearbox but its still ok. The mechanics on these are great and the abc isn’t as bad as people make out, second hand parts are regularly available but oem is as is expensive as it was in 2001. Ive got a guy in Scotland who knows them inside out and has 6 in for breaking, Callum sells parts for pennies if you wanted to get it back going I can put you in touch with him.
Defo throw 500 at jt to see if alteratir etc fixes lights - ifvutcdiez as others have sagd get struts etc from breakers if replacement alternator does not fix lights then part it out.
A guy at work has a 2014 CL63 and my god I love it the more I see it. I love my E400, probably wouldn’t even notice the difference in power but… but…. 🤤
I just bought a 2014 Range Rover Evoque which needs a service to the rear 4WD Helvic thingy. Lr quote the service interval as every 200, 000klms, but an independant LR mechanic said more like every 50,000klm or you get a juddering through the drivetrain and if they go look out, big biccies!
I had one of these, famtastic car ,just make sure you have a contingency fund for repairs ,90k plus when new ,repairs are similar! still miss it ,drive a 3 year old E220 its got less toys and not a patch on these.
Always enjoy your videos about cars, but never see one about Renault Kajar. Went to test drive one the other day and I wanted an automatic but this one was a semi automatic but cancelled the test what is your opinion of them.
In the cold light of day, part it out. The engine and headlights will get you loads back by themselves. If the gearbox is sound you will be in the money
here in Florida with all those issues we can can get cars on the road with no issues and no inspections lol. but me personally that love to save cars. if it isn't broke don't fix it
Those numbers being quoted by SPL are pretty eye watering. I think no matter how gorgeous these cars are in general, this one is only destined to be broken for parts. I suppose someone who knows what they're doing could repair the essential bits and then replace or remove the non essential bits making it a simpler car. They could then keep it and impress the hell out of the neighbours 🤣 Would still look the dog's xxxxx but would hopefully make it more reliable car to live with
I had a 2003 w220 S500 Lwb and it did not have (very surprisingly) any bodywork issues. Nevertheless it was an endless money pit and the cost of parts alone was ludicrous. After 2 years of it draining my wallet I had enough and got rid of it. Sure it was great when it was behaving but most of the time I was just waiting for the next huge bill. I had w126s before and they were far simpler and vastly superior in almost every way.
Hi Matt I've had a couple of these and the S500 saloons believe it or not if you have replaced the the battery after about five or six times starting the car a lot of the faults will go off the cars need to be used most of the electrical systems will start working again with regular use if you are going to (part it out) can I have the steering wheel 😊
A lovely car that needs some TLC, unfortunately of the age (up to 2004 when they changed) of the accountants water based paint disaster. The lights out on the speedo usually mean the cruise control is on, all Mercs of this period are very battery voltage sensitive for some of the systems make sure the battery is good. YT are a great help in accessing hidden menus and resetting systems such as AC after new gas. ESP comes up when voltage drops but usually cancelled by turning the wheel from one side to other. However all the points the garage point out are fixable but it is the astronomical price of parts that kill these lovely cars.
Matt i love your channel you seem a fine young business man , my current car is a jaguar xj , the x351 model its the LWB currently has 60,000 on clock . it is the 5ltre autobiography model with full rear package , im getting old this car still hass full warranty from jaguar on it for a year and a half , my point is this , when i get to old to drive i will offer it to you , it will come with FSH and every thing done by jaguar , carry on with the good work , Charlie
Im in a similar position, i own a W210 E55 estate, and though the interior is stunning, the cost cutting on the metal work by Mercedes is showing. I have no intention of following economical sense because i just want the car and love it, and finding another will be next to impossible. I was tempted to email you Matt about seeing if Transformotion would be interested in doing something of a restoration on the car. As for your CL, if its to keep then go hammers and tongs at it. If its for selling then walk away 😂
Find one with a nice body and suspension but shagged interior and/or engine. Make one good'n out of two. Too few left to abandon them all to scrap. Plus, what a nice car, with that engine, trick (but expensive) suspension. Just a shame it was parked in the beach for 4 years! I'm a big fan of yours from Australia. Looking forward to next installment.
This is what we are here for Matt. I’m guessing this was a simple set of number plates and a £15 mini valet. 🤣
I wish 😂

Not worth using parts from a crashed one or second hand
This car deserves its life back. Please fix it completely and make it one of the few nice Cl's around!
There should be a medal of some kind for having the balls to even consider fixing this.
Addition of the mechanics into the video is amazing. I used to think about this idea, so happy you've added them.
Does this mean we might get to see some of the repairs to cars in future? Was nice to see SPR giving their feedback on camera
I hope so. I think that would be interesting

A CL600 is a perfect car to drive with a friend who owns it. 😉
@@PATRYK-R1 👍
This is a very beautiful car, in its day it would have been absolutely cutting edge, both in terms of luxury and refinement.
Sadly though it’s day has long gone, it really does appear to be uneconomical to repair, however that said, it would be a shame to see it broken up for spares, it is a future classic, and the mileage is very low.
I’m glad I don’t have to decide its fate, I just hope you reach a decision you’re happy with Matt❤.
I think you’re right sadly
it's amazing that Mercedes, once the byword for motoring lifelong quality, dropped the ball so far in that era. The S Class of the period, the W220 was also shoddily put together.
Agree
Yeah, and Matt’s comments about wood screws not being factory fit? I wouldn’t be so sure….
This era of Merc were rust buckets as well as all the other problems. So it will rust everywhere whatever you do.
We need a make the West great again movement with the spotlight on those high elites and their willing saps that did this to our countries and brought us to war.
end of 90's onwards is when the bean-counters took over all areas - cue big decline in overall quality , sad .
Used as Spares?? theres pissall worth using
Unfortunately you can’t do anything with the number plate until the car has an MoT, so no go there.
All the good bits will probably still be good on others, and all the knackered parts people are looking for will be knackered on this as well.
Thanks for having us on your channel matt. Onto the next one 😉
Thanks! Hopefully next time you’ll have some good news 😂
Well I should of added, there is good news, I can fix it all 😂
Another brutally honest video, well done again Matt 🎉
- I guess the question is, for a premium vehicle with relatively low mileage, why so many issues.!?? Thank you.
Nice to see the rest of 'TEAM' behind your buisness GOOD JOB !!!
Why don’t you get a w140 coupe, they should be more reliable than the w220 cl. They are more expensive though
Like my comment you need one that has been garaged from new if possible.
I got one too in 2018, 48000 miles. It’s in storage…
I’ve had my eyes on one since the past month , nothing like Matt to bring you back to reality 😂
I’d be very wary
It's a pity most Mercedes get to be so badly maintained! I've had a old (1998) where most of the troubles were regular maintenance and correcting the crap previous owners did to the car. Many of those supposedly to "save money". As in total failure!
Properly maintained these are awesome cars.
The CLK is just a better option if you want a coupé from this era. Not as complicated or expensive to run. Based on C-class running gear and E-class interior
I actually think the CLK is prettier
Agreed 😁
One of my neighbours has both a clk200 kompresser and a cl500 as well as a r129 sl500. They're great cars and I think I prefer the clk. The cl500 and sl500 he has doesn't get driven often unfortunately because of the ULEZ but he doesn't want to get rid of them🤷🏽♂️. The clk was bought simply for that reason to avoid the ULEZ charge😂
@@HighPeakAutosclk was a birds car your CL was the car to have
@@martinlove7073 Agreed, I don't fit in a CLK. The roofline is too low for me to see out and my head is against the roofliner.
Great video as always.
The cars not had part warn tyres on it, it’s just had a cheap puncture repair where they mark the tyre where the valve is, so when they put the tyre back on the rim they don’t need to rebalance the wheel.
There’s a place in Blackpool that sells part worn tyres from Germany without repairs for £20 - £30 each inc fitting
Break it Matt, you may not keep this one on the road but the parts may keep another going :)
The parent’s neighbours had one of these back in 2001 or so. I loved it but never thought it was quite up to the standards of the old 126 series SEC coupes.
As soon as the missus hears "alright guys, how's it going ,welcome back" she rolls her eyes 🙄 & says "what's he sold you now!?" 🤣🤣
😂 you don’t want a cheap CL500 do you?
@@HighPeakAutos I do, she doesn't! 😆
It has a strong loyal following so should make a decent video series 😁
When it's fixed it can be raffled, should make some money in the end!
You could always put it on the golden mile at Blackpool illuminations and switch the dashboard on charge 50p a child to press all the buttons 😂
I feel your pain matt well done for trying the quality in that car is shocking with such low mileage, my pal has a 01 focus with 126k on the clock just passed its test no advisories, just goes to show 👍
It wouldnt if it had been treated the same as this one.
@@matsujarvinenSpot on. Mercedes Benz are fantastic cars, if they are are well maintained.
Agree
I'm certain the wheel rims are standard fit for a W220,my S320 has the same rims.
these are original wheels for this model and they look classy.
these wheels were optional for S320@@andythesoupdragon
Let the Transformotion lads have it!
Yep all that rust will buff up eh !
@@10wanderer Easily done, bit of hummerite paint job done 🤣
Love the team at SPR, Sam just serviced my CL and looks after our E class. Super team !!
These leather seats look like they lasted better than recent merc seats
They have, crappy leather in today's mercs.
Yeah man most cars now have synthetic leather to save costs 🙄
@@WayToManyAssassins Okay, and so the car should be cheaper? New Mercs now have Renault engines as well...it's a F-ing rip off
I had a 2005 CL55 that I put 235,000 miles on and loved every time I drove it………..AFTER ripping out the entire ABC system and replacing it with coil-overs and a normal power steering pump. Other than ABC, it was nearly bullet proof and faster than just about anything else
It’s got to be a breaker. Too much cost involved to make it worthwhile I’m afraid. There must be £2k’s worth of parts there to make it viable 👍🏻
Suggest you try your hand at banger racing!
didn't Toys R Us go bust in 2018?
The thing is 20 odd years old and rotten. Electrical gremlins on steroids
No amount of money will remake it.
SAM module damage due to water ingress, ABC going bang, earth fault & constant flat expensive battery. 😂
Check air scoop under windscreen is not blocked & loom in door not damaged.
Good luck. 👍
Save it Matt. Great content. Love seeing these cars get looked after
Money pit rotting like a pear were do you start. 😅
Alloy wheels is from E class W211 and rear lights are from facelift model 2003 onwards
Take care.
Yea...but hear me out....
These big powerful second hand Mercs are going around trying to get up to their original value in how much work they need doing 😂 Brilliant video, I enjoyed the walk around your brother did to see how bad it was
Agree on both points lol, the underneath inspection was great.
Massively????

Absolutely awesome video. Really interesting seeing the analysis in the garage. Wonderful content mate
Should have waited to the end 😂. Its dead, could get a CL55 in OK order for the price if fixing that,
Save it Matt, a nice Christmas present for yourself 👍😀
Thank you. I appreciate it
No more than five or six miles away from Matt's garage is a 500 SEC project that shows how things can go wrong. It's in the process of being converted into a cabriolet! It's been sitting in the same spot covered by plastic sheeting for over five years. Well, actually the sheeting collapsed into the body about four years ago so now there's more water in it than the Titanic .
Keep it on the road. Use aftermarket parts & do the rust & paintwork yourself.
Mechanics...
Always a ray of cheerful sunshine....
Legendary desing these
Looks elegant in every scenario
In the cold light of day, part it out. The engine and headlights will get you loads back by themselves. If the gearbox is sound you will be in the money
here in Florida with all those issues we can can get cars on the road with no issues and no inspections lol. but me personally that love to save cars. if it isn't broke don't fix it
Those numbers being quoted by SPL are pretty eye watering. I think no matter how gorgeous these cars are in general, this one is only destined to be broken for parts.
I suppose someone who knows what they're doing could repair the essential bits and then replace or remove the non essential bits making it a simpler car.
They could then keep it and impress the hell out of the neighbours 🤣
Would still look the dog's xxxxx but would hopefully make it more reliable car to live with
I had a 2003 w220 S500 Lwb and it did not have (very surprisingly) any bodywork issues.
Did you have any issues with the engine? i heard the v8s are bulletproof.
Parts bin I'm afraid Matt. Thanks for the video though. love these ones about old luxury motors. Was on my dream list back in the day.
An honest report... thanks. I think you will make a profit parting it out. This example is sadly not worth saving.
