There are 6 original Avengers; Iron Man, Captain America, Thor (the Big Three), Hulk, Hawkeye, and Black Widow. Others as you know are added. This movie represent many firsts and unprecedented acheivements. No studio has ever crossed franchises like this, taking 4 years to set it up with absolute intent. The MCU is unique. Be careful of spoilers . . . . some people are loose-lipped and too dumb to realize they are spoiling. It is gratifying to see self-described DC fans loving these stories and this adventure so much! Thank you for crossing over and giving Marvel their shot!

Interesting fact Agent Coulson is an original character introduced in the MCU and later added to the comics, video games, and animated series like in a episode of Iron Man: Armored Adventures, a recurring character in Ultimate Spider-Man voiced by the actor, and in the first ep. of the Anime series Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers.

I always thought Nat was so scared of the Hulk because of how powerless she is to him. Her strengths are her ability to manipulate and fight if it becomes necessary. Neither of those would work on Hulk and she knows it. He's truly an unknowable and unstoppable force and that terrifies her.

I've kind of thought about it like she understands monsters, because she feels she is one. So, she can usually quickly assess their threat level and determine ways of fighting or fleeing from them. With the Hulk though, she knows that if he comes out, there's simply nothing she can do. In the shows, she does nearly impossible things all the time. With the Hulk though, she knows she's flat out not going to stand a chance.

One of the reasons I loved this movie is what you said...
EVERYONE HAD A MOMENT TO BE AWESOME!
Loki had his moments of awesome!
Each of the six Avengers had moments of awesome!
Nick Fury and Phil Coulson had their moments to be awesome
and even Agent Hill got her time to be awesome!
And what I LOVE about the whole MCU is the complexity of the characters and their interactions. For example - the relationship between Barton and Romanov is such an incredible bond of trust and friendship and I love every moment with them in the films.

Fun Comic Book Fact: When Thanos is told that courting the humans would be to court death, and Thanos smiles, in the comics Death is a being and Thanos is in love with Death. I'm so glad you guys are enjoying these. I forgot the pure joy the first time watching this, but you reminded me. Also the great thing that you'll experience watching these movies as you progress through is not just the emotional journey the characters take from movie to movie, but also the progression of their fighting skills as a team. You commented on some of the great dual fighting moments, like Iron Man shooting his lasers off of Cap's shield. Throughout the movies you see them get more and more talented with each others fighting skills and using them more and more creatively. Which is exactly what you would expect with a team that has fought side by side for years. It's very cool to watch.

Bit of trivia. The whole shawarma bit was an after thought. During editing, Joss Whedon didn't like the ending when Stark wakes up and originally simply says, "What's next?" So Whedon wrote and filmed several other lines including, "Tell me nobody kissed me," and the shawarma lines. When he decided to include the shawarma line he also decided to add the final post credit scene which was filmed after principle filming was complete. 27:20 Chris Evans has his fist obscuring his face because he had grown a mustache and beard for the movie _Snowpiercer_ and couldn't shave it off for the re-shoot.

  • @path5657

I love how attached you got to Coulson. He's one of the best characters. Fortunately, if you want, you can see more of him, because he's brought back to life in the show Agents of Shield. He leads a special team and the first season is partially about exploring how and why he's alive again.
It's made by the same production company that made both the first two Avenger movies. It's also, in my opinion, excellent. The first season is a bit slow for the first half, bit picks up pace quickly half way through. Each subsequent season gets better and crazier. Coulson and his team get to be basically Avenger level heroes doing their work in the shadows.
Also, just for added bonus, the show ties in with most of the major MCU films along the way, so when things change in the MCU, it affects the world in the show as it goes along. If you guys are liking these movies and really like Coulson, you really should check out the show.

In old school Marvel comics (pre-Disney) - Hulk / Thor fights were amazing. Only Thor's hammer Mjolnir and his fighting skills would keep him in battle against the Incredible Hulk - The Strongest One There Is.

27:21 The fun fact about that scene is that it was filmed just before the movie's premiere, literally an hour before red carpet time. That's why Captain America isn't eating, because he grew a beard for Snowpiercer and couldn't shave it off. It's also why Black Widow's hair is straighter than in the movie, as she had it curled for the scene and the subsequent premiere, but her natural hair is actually quite straight. It was never planned during filming, but it was Robert Downey Jr's improvised "lets get shawarma" line that prompted it, so they set it up, did it in one take, and then everyone scattered to get into their formal stuff for the premiere.

Except for the earlier Spiderman & Hulk movies, this was my first MCU film. I wanted to see it because I used to subscribe to the Avengers comic thru the 1970s to 80s; & because an issue of The Avengers was the first comic book I ever bought! (And being young & distracted, I'd misread the title, thinking it was "The Adventures of" someone! I was very surprised when I'd pulled it out of the bag walking home, & saw the title was The Avengers. I probably had to get out my dictionary & look up the word. I was probably around 10 when I bought it. For 15¢.)
Anyone here remember when comics sold for 15¢? It went up to 25¢, then 50 & 75! I finally had to stop buying comics when each issue sold for $1.50. X-Men was on their "spread the story thru as many titles as there are, to promote sales" binge; & I simply didn't have the income to support that.
At that time, I was buying all 3 Superman titles, Justice League, Justice League International, R.E.B.E.L.S, Lobo, & the post Crisis reboot Wonder Woman; as well as the assorted X-Men books (X-Men, X-Man, Alpha Flight, Excalibur, Cable, New Mutants, & a couple others), Spiderman, Daredevil, The Guardians of the Galaxy, The Avengers, Thor, Hulk & a couple others. The cost adds up!!!
If you had fun with this movie, wait til Guardians of the Galaxy!!! It's a riot! (And, with CGI & excellent makeup design, the characters look *exactly* how they were drawn in the comic!)

I'm curious if you're considering watching any of the television series connected to the MCU. It wouldn't be absolutely necessary to see them in chronological order with the films. For example, if I remember correctly, season one of "Agents of Shield" started right after this film, but if you watched multiple seasons in a row, you would get spoilers for later films. If you're thinking about seeing them, it might be best to save them for after so you're not bouncing back and forth from series to films.

The most epic movie until this point. Watching all of these superheros from their own movies coming together. But things only get bigger and more epic from here. So many more heros introduced as the movies go on.

I don't think this is very obvious, I didn't really get it until I'd watched the movie a couple of times, but when Maria Hill tells the pilot to execute Wishbone, I'm pretty sure that was just a plan to get the Hulk to jump off of the carrier and fall to his death. I don't think they thought shooting him was going to do anything other than get his attention, the plan was just to get him to jump off of the carrier. Unfortunately the pilot got a little bit too close LOL

the details that Loki used on Natasha were all true.. its just, she is too good to be affected by it..
funny you mentioned Richard E. Grant..hold that thought..
yes, this is the end of Phase 1..
Phase 2 will be Iron Man 3, Thor: Dark World, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man..
yes, Spiderman is Marvel but the rights falls into Sony Pictures, not Disney/ Marvel Studios..we'll get into that soon..
    great reaction guys..

Fun fact: After credit scene was shot after the red carpet premiere. They all got back to the studio, Evans already had full beard so they had to cover it with prosthetics and that's why Cap has a hand on his chin. Evans, Hemsworth, and Scarlett wore wigs because they already changed their hairstyle. Hemsworth felt sick after the shooting cuz he ate too much of shawarma during the many takes.

The one thing I didn’t like with this movie is that Loki should have been able to wipe the floor with everyone at once while wielding the staff since we now know he’s technically wielding the Mind Stone and the Space Stone at the same time.

Joss Whedon did the impossible with this movie, he set a blueprint that allowed other directors to improve upon leading to a great series of films all the way up to Endgame. Master of the ensemble cast in both film and tv.

Steve and Nat have one of my favourite relationships in the MCU.
Also, i think Nat and Clint are some of the most impressive members in the avengers, especially in these early days, because unlike everyone else, they don't have super powers or ridiculously powerful technology. In this film, the most advanced technology between them is Hawkeye's arrow heads. Nat only has pistols and her martial arts skills in this film.
I also love the role steve plays here as the leader, he's able to show the police what to do and how to best utilise the powers of each of his teammates instead of all of them running wild doing their own thing. It goes back to the big 4's origin movies, he's the only one that had experience leading a team successfully. The only other to lead a team was thor and that was a spectacular fuck up with the frost giants

Plenty of negative things to say about Joss Whedon's management style, but this movie would not have been anywhere near as good without him directing. The reason the interactions were so good despite having such a large cast is it was directed by the same guy who did Firefly

Fun facts. Hulk gets angry if someone calls him Banner, something Cap notices and uses several times in the saga starting on that moment when they finally gather round and gives orders to each one, and to hulk says: Hulk, Smash! probably the reason Hulk cheeky smiles back to Cap. Hulk punches Thor cause he is now on same side but he does remember the fight in the Helicarrier of SHIELD when Loki unleashes him. Banner falls from the Sky and it's called an alien refering to the many other races will come from the stars, and he then again falls from above again on Infinity War this time from outer space but in the same way. Tony calls Steve a laboratory product wortless otherwise and Steve tells tony to stop pretending being a Hero and accept he is selfish. By the end of the movie and the saga both prove each other wrong. Steve real power is similar to Clark Kent's: their capacity to understand what is good and do the right thing. Along the saga Tony improves every Mark Armor as we seee from Iron Man I that includes reusing the bolts Thor makes hit on him what he learnt on this movie. Also he made the Nanotech one for Infinity War afterfacing Ant Man on Civil War thing he learnt to use on... well you'll see...

In addition to Cobie Smulders ("Robin"/Maria Hill), Thanos's henchman is played by Alexis Denisof, who was "Sandy Rivers" on "How I Met Your Mother". (Denisof worked for Joss Whedon back on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"; that's where he met his wife, Alyson Hannigan [Lily].)
And yes, we'll miss Phil. Whedon always did love killing sympathetic supporting characters. (It's arguable he became a bit too dependent on it, through the years, but it works here.)
Technically, they could have killed Tony Stark and "Iron Man 3" could have had Jim Rhodes in the suit. We already saw Rhodey as War Machine in the last film, and Don Cheadle can carry a film. (Just like RDJ, he's been nominated for Best Actor.) But Downey does such a great job in making Tony so appealing, it's understandable they want to use him as much as possible.

Just realized, it's weird that I forgot the last line in this movie.
"To challenge them is to court death."
In the comics, Thanos literally courted the personification of Death, he was in love with "her". Now I think this movie may have been initially intending to set up that storyline, like Thanos may have planned to do the same thing with the gauntlet, but with the goal of winning Death's affection.
Of course, some of the story threads Joss set up were abandoned when the Russos took over, so that may have happened here.
In all fairness, that might have been a bit too esoteric a goal to adapt to screen successfully.

Another Great reaction, one show to consider that came out in Phase 2 "Marvels Agents of Shield" the first few seasons sort of fill in the gaps between the movies of Phase 2 Up to Season 6 it was considered cannon however this all changed because of writters of the movies no longer working with writers of the show. So the show is now not considered cannon even though it does great build up to the movies
