There was a lot of "bigger roads don't necessarily help traffic flow" in today's lesson. If you didn't believe it, this would show you. 👍👍👍 Great vid, Biffa! Love the final cinematic.
Tell people to stop using 6 lane one ways. They usually don't help at all but rather make everything worse, especially with roundabouts. They also make the city look quite bad, if they are spammed around for so many roads.
There were so many lane management problems you didn't touch, no doubt because of wanting to fix as much as possible with the lightest touch. I can see why now, that flyover at the end was absolutely brilliant showing how little you changed and how much the traffic improved.

Most European cities have junctions that are relatively close, but they still have smooth traffic. Here’s how: 1. Roundabouts: They help smooth traffic 2. Pedestrian roads(e.g promenades) and paths: Most cities have pedestrian dedicated roads(yes, the zonable ones you get from Network Extensions) and paths providing short routes to commercial/office zones. 3. Public Transportation: Public transportation is virtually everywhere in most cities in Europe. Whether it’s buses, metro, tram or commuter rail (trains in Cities: Skylines), there’s always at least one mode of public transportation Limited Parking Spaces: This forces most citizens to rely on public transportation instead of cars, improving traffic flow. However, this is a very brilliant fix, especially for American cities (they depend on private cars). If you’re working on a European city though, you’ll need to take public transportation as a big part of your traffic fix since European cities depend on public transportation instead of private cars.

Always enjoy watching your city fix videos... and that you have went to more than just adding those dang ugly circles, that take up so much room... yea I dislike roundabouts, IRL and in game. Watching you add unneeded roundabouts, when traffic just wants to make a simple turn, always inspires me to come up with other solutions. Traffic management is not just about flow, which in a 20,000 city is quite easy to get to 90%...It is about getting people to their destination. I used to be lazy with metro, and just build the metro loops, like you did in this video. I have found with experimentation in the same city, that the hub and spoke method moves more cims, and reduces surface traffic better.
Hey biffa, One thing I would really like you to teach. In addition to the usuall lane mathematics and roundabout managemen, their is the important notion of lane Hierarchy. You want one main streat to run straight through the districts, with a limitied number of collecting roads connected to it, in order to limit congestion. And to these collecting roads you can have local streats spreading around, but not directly connected to the main artherials. That kind of design allows to build districts not fully made of super big streets (one 6 lane artherial connected to the highway, with a few 4 lanes collecting roads attached to it, and then you can spread the local 2 lane streats).
"Lane mathematics" Stuff we actually see in many highway systems, considering these sort of thing is very similar to IRL system in the UK, so you just need to drive around the country to see it. Also, Euro Truck Simulator 2 seems to be somewhat realistic besides the distance/time compression to experience the roads in Europe. So you can "experience" in a fun way (better then Google Street View voyeuring).
I think the worst my traffic has gotten is 50% and then I either quit or looked up videos like this. Cause I always end up with bad traffic the bigger the city gets
The huge toll roads are rather too much for the game AI, they won't really use the full size anyways so it's always better to use the toll roads with the same lane count as the road you putting it on. Also making sure the automatic toll roads thing will help out a lot to speed things up a bit. The ideal location I use is where the highways come in to your city meaning the very outer limits. This keeps the traffic to a minimum but the downside is that you need to make sure electricity and water is available which may cost you a lot to even add it in.
I've always had problems with traffic on highways and coming into the city- and now, after this video, I think I know some reasons why. Can't wait to launch up the game, use some of the things I learned, and probably still have terrible traffic somehow!
I think the city was originaly built without the infinite money and he converted it so that he can add what he wants without precautions and having to wait for income, or it has been built with infinite money and he wants to add realism.
I've heard that tolls make only traffic that needs to enter the city go through the city roads, as without them, traffic that just wants to pass through the map may go through the city as a "shortcut" however only makes city traffic worse. Toll booths filter this traffic.
two way, 4 lane roundabouts, they work incredibly well, build them above ground, below ground, big with multiple nodes, small with 4 nodes, can add monorails, trams to these and replicate the massive mini roundabout large roundabouts around Britain. They work, added that bicycle lane down the middle of the city and wow it works with my underpass pathway network so in theory 75% of my city has the need to cross a road, removed. Keep up the great work Biffa.
Love your vids, biffa! Cheers. I'm looking forward to more CS vids that dont just focus on traffic. Lord knows how you get office blocks to level 5, for example. :)

Hello Biffa, watching till some time your "Fixing your City in Cities:Skyline". One friend of me, buyed the game, because he watched with me some videos of you. He build a city, got the traffic to roundabout 40% and i helped him, with the fixes you do every time and got his traffic back to 95%. And it was a huge fun, to do that, fixing a city. I'm a bit jealous of you, doing that now and then :) Hope you make some more of these videos, because it's relaxing to view these videos and so much to learn.
Hey Biffa I only drink coffee while playing cause I don't like tea, is that why I keep getting gridlocked? Damn that sweeping camera over the city comparing before & after is great, are you planning on doing that for all fix it videos?
I propose you just annoy everyone equally and start saying "sunwise" and "counter sunwise". Anyone who asks what that means, just say "Get a sundial, you fool!"
I don't play this game but it is so satisfying, to watch you fix it all. I like that there is no profanity. Keep up the good work. Bless you and your family.
Wow! This has to be one of your best fixes ever, and with just a few simple principles. Since my city hit 100,000, traffic is becoming an issue (69%), but now I'm going to take another look and give it the Biffa treatment!
One suggestion, for roundabouts which are embedded in the city grid, you can reuse the grid and make one connection one-way into the roundabout, and one connection one-way out of it. Like the one at 23:18 and it again at 24:14, this would separate flows in and out of it.
What annoys me about this game's AI is that every car does the EXACT same thing. If they put a little bit of variability into their route planning, that would already improve traffic.
Crypto is like water, it flows up the currents, or the down currents ,it settles in tranquile lakes, or fiercely rains down cliffs, forming spectacular waterfalls, at the eh of a rainbow. So, think crypto as water, my friend, and hydrate.
Love when Biffa puts his walkways in on his round-abouts. Requirement to climb on is a proficiency with rock climbing due to slope of ramps 24:53. lol. Love the fixes though.
Are you using a mod to add more road types? Seems like you have more road size/type options than I do. I do not have Snowfall, Industries, or Campus so many be they are a DLC I do not have.
I think sometimes roads can be straightened or curved more neatly if you turn on snapping in the Move It mod. Not always but it's useful to see how the road 'wants' to go.
For some reason, the RUclips algorithm is recommending your videos and I'm hooked, and I don't even play the game. However, that may change. do you have a series of how to get started with this? I not I would love to see this right from the point of how to purchase the game, the costs and installing mods, etc. Fantastic channel.
while driving in Hawaii. I always think of lane mathematics. And the Hawaii road planners apparently do not know math. Which is why it can take over an hour to go 15 miles
You did a good job on this one indeed. Comes to show once more that bigger roads do not mean a better flow :) It is funny that I often in spare time after work rather watch you fix cities than to play the game myself. (although I intend to play it myself again of course ^^)

Houses: *dissapear*
Biffa: "AM I AJOKE TO YOU?"
loved the slip lane being moved b4 the toll. get em in their pockets. the b4 & after flyover is the coup de grace. nice job.
"Lane mathematics"
Stuff we actually see in many highway systems, considering these sort of thing is very similar to IRL system in the UK, so you just need to drive around the country to see it.
I don’t understand why there’s toll booths in a city with unlimited money. Get rid of them and the traffic will improve too
I think the city was originaly built without the infinite money and he converted it so that he can add what he wants without precautions and having to wait for income, or it has been built with infinite money and he wants to add realism.
Found your videos a couple weeks ago. Been binge watching. Love these videos Biffa! I have been itching to get this game on PC. Not the same on console. Definitely learning good tips and tricks!
Thank you Cinnamon 92 :-)
Same here! I never actually was much for this type of videos, but I just love the way Biffa plays the game, and fixes traffic. I actually started a new game because of it. I hadn't played in a long wile, because I was always so annoyed withe the f...ing traffic. Now I now how to avoid it. ( Most of the time ;-))
Anticlockwise is correct biffa, Americans just have a different word but both are correct.
Bring back “widdershins” tho
The montage at the end was awesome! Really liked seeing all the different red areas become beautiful and traffic free!
The amount of one way roads in this city really annoyed me lol. Anyways great fix Biffa.
I'm new to City Skylines and loving the game so far. I found the lane mathematics advice at 6:30 super! I just didn't think about lane engineering in game yet. Thanks!
Good ol‘ lane-mathematics get the job done
Indeed :-)
Hello Biffa,
watching till some time your "Fixing your City in Cities:Skyline".
"Anti clockwise, or counter clockwise if you're going to correct me about that"
Ahem. Widdershins.
The before/after at the end was the icing on the cake with your cup of tea! Great addition.
Call it widdershins instead of counterclockwise to really irritate people.
haha and deosil
I'm new to this game but I'm learning a lot from your videos and I'm loving the complexity of building cities 😍 keep the great job 👊
Biffa- the nicer gamer version of Gordon Ramsey 👌
Hey Biffa I only drink coffee while playing cause I don't like tea, is that why I keep getting gridlocked?
Damn that sweeping camera over the city comparing before & after is great, are you planning on doing that for all fix it videos?
Maybe cause your road system needs to be improved? XD
Must be it, you need to change bud! ;-)
@@PerfectAlibi1 I was mostly joking lol, I've only had 1 slight gridlock in my 60k pop city so far
Bless you and your family.
all city designer should play this game before carry out their development plan
They play it reverse: How to cause more traffic in the citiy.
Wow! This has to be one of your best fixes ever, and with just a few simple principles. Since my city hit 100,000, traffic is becoming an issue (69%), but now I'm going to take another look and give it the Biffa treatment!
Way to many 6 lane one way roads... just get the rules right and you can do with just 2 or 3 lanes both way.
Very nice fix!
I love the reactions. 14:40 "Wow! What is going on here? Yeah... you can't do that!"
The traffic in this game is so unrealistic. Resorting people to design ridiculous roads.
This is one of the most helpful videos I've seen yet to manage traffic. Lane mathematics is straight up magic, wow.
The traffic is on the wrong side of the road! 😂
This was a fantastic video! I especially love the smooth before and after shots at the end.. PERF. *applause* yo!
I like the snowfall maps, but my PC doesn't work very well with them ;-;
ive built a new city since watching alot of these, and up to 216k people and 81% traffic, pretty happy with that.
Im in my annual cities skylines phase. And your old videos are very fun to watch again😊
Urban Dictionary describes "fictual" as the following:
Fictual
A word used when a moron does not know the word "ficticious."
So satisfying. Keep up the good work!
your accent sounds like you'd call it inverse clocky wocky
Oh i love that comparison fly over at the end.
Really shows of the change.
Crypto is like water, it flows up the currents, or the down currents ,it settles in tranquile lakes, or fiercely rains down cliffs, forming spectacular waterfalls, at the eh of a rainbow. So, think crypto as water, my friend, and hydrate.
For real crypto is profitalbe.......
Crypto is the new gold
I wanted to trade crypto, but got confused by the fluctuaton in price
@@andrealydia8240 That won't bother you if you trade with Expert Brayton Morris
I heard that his strategies are really good
Love when Biffa puts his walkways in on his round-abouts. Requirement to climb on is a proficiency with rock climbing due to slope of ramps 24:53. lol. Love the fixes though.
I pretend they're stairs 😉
Satisfying to watch man! Nice job over there
You are the Yoda of CS! Loved watching you fix this!
Are you using a mod to add more road types? Seems like you have more road size/type options than I do. I do not have Snowfall, Industries, or Campus so many be they are a DLC I do not have.
Ooo. I like the flyover at the end showing the before and after. Cool.
Mike Boehm me too
Intro So smooth! I like it! Keep it up buddy!
Welcome! I have tons of playlists starting from scratch with Cities, all on my channel - enjoy :-)
Great job Biffa! Love the before/after view at the end
while driving in Hawaii. I always think of lane mathematics. And the Hawaii road planners apparently do not know math. Which is why it can take over an hour to go 15 miles
You did a good job on this one indeed. Comes to show once more that bigger roads do not mean a better flow :)
It is funny that I often in spare time after work rather watch you fix cities than to play the game myself. (although I intend to play it myself again of course ^^)
