    E-Bike Question of the Day ⚡🚴 Would you choose the Turbo Vado over a more affordable electric commuter? Why? Let us know in the comments below 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

      No and I haven't even checked their retail prices because I know they will be more than many other bikes on the market with more power and bigger batteries. $4000 is crazy price for this bike.

      as much love as I have for Specialized they are asking too much for too little on this bike. SRAM 11 speed and Hydraulic brakes? on a $4000 bike - SRAM? Seriously? Jesus why not just throw a shimano tourney on it and drop the price by a grand?

      I have had a 5.0 Vado IGH on order since the preorders dropped. I was planning on an e-bike this year and was going to drive 2 hours to a Bosch dealer because I didn't get exactly what I wanted out of the last gen Specialized bikes. This changed all that and my LBS that's only 7 miles away is mainly a Specialized dealer, so this makes my life a lot easier to have close support and a solid platform.

    • @zoiks6631

      @@Onimaru924 I missed those preorders and am bummed about it. I’d like to order a red 5.0 Vado step-thru with the belt drive and automatic transmission. So yeah, I’d pay more for a Vado than one of the cheaper ebikes. I’d rather own a quality mid-drive ebike, and one where I’m confident bike shops will work on it and the company that made the ebike won’t go out business, ending support for the ebike.

      If the price gap wasn't so huge, this would be much more attractive. No denying a great amount of thought and effort went into the T Vado, but a One-Up or Aventon for less than $2K would more than do the trick, if not beat this bike in all-around, daily performance. That hell hill you test on has NOTHING on the hills in San Diego or San Francisco, both of which I've spent many years in commuting and errand running. The Vado would do OK, but I'd defer to a 750w that's a bit less sophisticated to get the job done. I could use that extra $2K for...a whole bunch of things and never regret not buying the T Vado!

    I had a Trek E-bike for 3 years before getting this 4.0. I also had traditional bikes for years before from road to Hybrids. This 4.0 is hands down the best bike I have ever had. The power is so smooth and powerful. Love the mission control syncing with my iPhone. The ride is unbelievable between the front suspension and suspension seat. Tires are rated for 50 psi but can be aired down to 25 for an even smoother ride off-road. Being in my 70's, 20-28 I found very attainable with even power throughout the speed range. At speed it is very stable ride. Just can't say enough about this bike. I use it for exercise and photography and the MIK rack fortunately allowed me to keep my previous bags I use to carry my camera equipment and will allow me to add bags in the future.

    I have Tantalus mountain near my house. Used to climb it on trek 1500 road bike. Won
    Tantalus time trails in my age group several.
    Also did 3 cycle to sun on Maui. Sea level to 10,000 feet. Blew out my knee trying to push
    big climbing gears at 59 trying to match my early 40's times up Tantalus. Ended my cycling didn't try again until 72 spinning a low gear up the mountain. My knee hurt just
    a small amount on the steeper grades esp. as I got stronger my cardio always strong slow heart beat & large lung capacity. Have lost some of that in older age. Looked into e bikes most are very heavy & handle poorly.
    I did research ended up with Specialized Vado SL 4.0. Climbing Tantalus use sport mode in steep sections rest of time in eco mode turn it off for mountain downhill.
    My knee doesn't hurt & I'm getting in good shape turn 73 next month. I love this bike. Makes me want to ride every day.

    I live in the UK in West Wales - a place well known for its hills! I bought the 4.0 2 years ago - after a trial - that left me with a permanent smile! I have never been a keen cyclist, but as a 70yr old wanted something different to enjoy the Covid Lockdown and fresh air! It is quite simply a fine piece of Engineering and quality build. One of the best reviews of the Vado 4 on the internet. I have owned 2 Vado 4's and they are great e-bikes, and this review is spot on. My only issue is that in ECO mode with the default setting at 35/35 is roughly 112% of the motor/battery support, I can get roughly 90 miles in that setting on a full charge. In Sport mode, 75/75 setting, close to 50 miles. This is my favorite e-bike hands down. The current sale on the 4.0 makes it a steal.

Even if it's just an overlay on the screen, it really helps for us that don't use anything else. Hope this is something you would consider 😊 Again, thank you for the video! I was able to snag a Turbo Vado 5.0, and I just love it. 90% of my time I ride in Eco mode, but found myself falling back on Turbo when I attempt a ride that is a bit beyond the level that I've conditioned myself for, and that extra boost gets me back to my car with no issues. The Mission Control app and web interface are also fun and useful for analyzing your rides, and viewing accurate maps of the path taken.

    Really good detailed review thank you. Today by chance, I tried out a Specialized Turbo Vado 4 on a super hilly city in New Zealand. Same model as this one but with no fenders. Initially I rode along with the motor off noticing how lovely the shifting and ride was. At 90 kg I then raged easily up a notorious local hill which two 85 nm ebikes had struggled to get me up the week prior. I now have a size XL on order and can happily recommend this bike. I look forward to going anywhere in the city now fearless of its hills.

    I just ordered the 4.0 step through today. (on sale for $2,800!!) After only riding road bikes with skinny tires this will be a change but at 71 with standing balance issues due to neuropathy in my feet and left leg I am hoping this will keep me riding longer in life. Who knows, maybe I can keep up in group rides now. Thanks for the great review. This is my 2nd watching.

    • @scottr303
      @scottr303 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@hamond22 The ride is great. The front shock system is really nice. I missed a sidewalk ramp on a last second turn and hit about 3-4" of curb. It went over that like nothing was there. On a rigid frame bike it might have thrown me.
      It rides like a regular bike. On my last ride the power assist was off for 44% of the ride. ( Eco level 43%, Sport 5%, Turbo 4%) Since it weighs 3X of what my road bike did I do use the assist to help on inclines or keep up.
      There is a last long, moderate incline before the end of our ride around the lake which usually has me dropping gears quite a bit and wiped at the top. I decided to test the Turbo mode and ended up climbing it at 22-23 mph! I never riede that fast except going down hills! So I am certain it will be a big help on steeper hills to. Enjoy your new Turbo Vado. It was a mental change for me but I am liking it now.

    The 3.0 belt version is the only ebike that checks all the boxes for me but as a full-time bike commuter I'm just so hesitant to drop ~$4k on a bike because of theft. The ride1up 700 cannot isn't nearly as nice and you're taking a chance on quality control & customer support but it still checks the important commuter boxes and costs ~$1.5k. Not only can I replace the thing and still spend less than a Vado but I can ride around with a lot less theft anxiety. If only people left bikes alone...

I need something that I can load up on a train or carry up and down stairs if I get somewhere and there's no elevator or escalator that's working. Or load on a bike rack on a car. I love Specialized bicycles and I have owned four of them over the past so many years. I get it when you say the engineering is outstanding. I never was a bike snob and was happy with my Schwinn and Takara and Fuji - until I rode my first Specialized Diverge. I had a hardrock and while I liked it - I didn't think it was any better than my Schwinn - the Diverge tho was my first mid-level Specialized. It fit like a glove and I never got tired of riding it. As fantastic as their bikes are (I own a Carbon Diverge in addition to the Aluminum one - and a StumpJumper Alloy) let's be honest. They are too expensive. Their customer service is not anything to really mention considering the price of their bikes. Yes, they are great bikes and have a solid reputation of quality on the mid to high level bikes. Their entry level bikes are not any better than their competition and are a lot more expensive. I have yet to experience an e-bike by specialized - I have two e-blkes already and I seriously don't need another bike - especially a class 3 without a throttle and smaller battery for $4000+ Too much for too little.

      There are many factors that influence range, including rider weight, speed, weather, terrain/topography, etc. No two riders will be identical, especially on a bike with a torque sensor. Was the bike used? Batteries can experience reduced ability to hold charge over time (and after many charge cycles), so this could be a factor.

    After only a few hundred dry miles from new I discovered pit marks on the chrome stanchions of my Vado 4.0 2022. Specialized told me to ask my dealer to put in a warranty claim to SR Suntour but they say rust is not covered under warranty. I am not impressed that a brand new £4000 bike can suffer rust despite never actually getting wet (UK weather is poor but I've never had this happen before) and that it is not covered by warranty. BEWARE !

    Very nice looking bike and I get what the reviewer says about an ebike that behaves more like a traditional bike. And Specialized has the experience to know how to design a good bike. They've made many classics on the traditional side. For decades. When I bought my e-Bike in 2019, I, unfortunately, didn't test ride Specialized and wound up with a more expensive, but also nice, Riese and Muller roadster. It rides great, but IMO, it's not pretty. The Como is one of the rare ebikes that looks good. And it's cheaper than the R&M, which was $5700 last time I checked. And over-the-air updates would be a great thing. The Bosch system from 2019 requires a trip to the bike shop and a fee to get updates done which is total BS. Another advantage of choosing an big US company over an EU company is support if you live in the US. Try finding a Riese and Muller dealer in most states. Not happening. Even some of the parts they use are not easily obtained in the US. And yes, last time I test rode a lot of bikes, in 2019, lots of the class 3 bikes, including those with Brose motors, had trouble sustaining speeds at >= 25mph. The R&M can do it and it also gets great range out of the 500WH battery. Nice to see the Como has water bottle cages. Another reviewer always complains about the lack of them and I didn't realize the importance of them until I moved to a desert climate. If / when I ever get another ebike, Specialized will be on my list. And R&M probably won't be - too expensive, not pretty, poor US support unless you live near a dealer.

    With such a hefty sticker price, I'm curious why someone would choose this over, say, a Ride1up Prodigy. I have neither, but I'm on the market, thinking of ditching my Qualibike entry level e-bike since the motor conked out on me.

    A company named Brose… Sorry, but Brose is on of the most famous middrive companies on this planet. Known for building the quitest units in the industry. And these units are really made in Germany, not like Bosch, where you get made in Hungary. Maybe they should’ve gone for the 90Nm Brose TF instead of the 70Nm Brose T. In this price range, Cube and others give you the top unit.

    • @bjnslc
      @bjnslc 2 года назад +1

      Brose isn't well-known in USA and Specialized brands the motor as its own, so I'm sure no sleight was intended. US ebikes at retail are mostly Bosch and Shimano.

      Brose has the highest failure rate of all known bigger brands. Bosch has the lowest failure rate of all. Brose is maybe building them in germany but the parts are not made in germany. I drive Bosch since 2017 without any problems and my next ebike will be Bosch powered too. Btw you are wrong. The batteries of Bosch get built in hungary. Their mid drives are built in Taiwan.

    I have a Haibike 2018 Urban5s. It has 63newton meters of power. I'm in my mid 60s and I find no problem getting up to 28mph on flat surfaces. My bike has an older design motor made by Bosch. Bosch now has an 85newton meter motors available. So if you want a class 3 e-bike, forget what was mentioned in the video. The reason why I bring this up, in the video makes issue that other e-bike makers tend to market in Europe, they don't make an effort to produce a true class 3 e-bike. That is false, Specialized markets to Europe, Canada and Europe as well. Both Canada and Europe don't allow class 3 e-bikes.
    That all being said, the Specialized Vado is a great urban choice. The bike is built for comfort and like a tank. Front and rear light and a well designed rack for panniers included.
    Final note, In past years all of the Vado models were produced with 90newton meters of power. Buying a bike with a few miles and a couple years old, may save you some serious cash.

    I appreciate the battery range test in the different modes but without the data on the actual cyclist's power input through the pedals, your range and average speed will vary. Doesn't the bike have a meter that measures the riders input and average input? You should have included that data. If you can average 240 watts and I can only average 100 watts, won't the range be different?

      I added the panniers also. The fit and finish of them is great, and they attach very firmly to the frame, so you know they aren't going anywhere. they are not expandable, so you can't fit a big haul of groceries in them , but laptop, a minor bag or 2 of groceries and incidentals for along day trip definitely they are worth it. + they really look great and 'complete' the bike.

    • @davidpaisley9949
      @davidpaisley9949 2 года назад +3

      Having a COMO 5.0 and Juiced Ripcurrent, the 750 watt motor vs the 250 motor does not make a lot of difference in hill climbing. The power is the important measure, which is NM and both my bikes come in at around 80 NM. Everything he said is correct. It is a very refined bike. I rarely use the throttle on my Juiced. The Juiced will go up to speed faster on level ground. The Como/Vados give a very natural feel, almost like biking a non-motorized bike.

    • @Alttabbins
      @Alttabbins 2 года назад +4

      Torque is much more important on a mid drive than wattage. 250w is also just the nominal wattage, not the peak.

    Nice E-bike. But outside of personal tastes in looks, pride of ownership, a sense of superior status, etc., I don't really understand why someone would purchase a $4,000 Specialized TV 4.0 E-Bike when a $1,600 Espin Nesta equals or betters it in all practical performance metrics in your standard tests formats. I'd take the $2,400 saved and get insurance, spare tubes, tires, batteries, charger, and other needed accessories such as a helmet, mirrors, horn, locks, alarm, LoJack, etc., and still have a good deal of money left over for other needs and wants. Or buy a 2nd Nesta as a back up or a similar priced E-Bike for other niche uses. To each their own, but the performance metrics and prices are what they are, and such data is the real value of well done reviews such as those found at EBR, -- thanks for the great reviews gang !!!
