Only notice it as I cover the same kilometres on the daily commute in Summer & Winter. Would be curious how the VadoSL performs (same/different) over the seasons - as with other long-term reviews. Hey, love your review. Just bought my wife a small 2022 Vado SL 5 eq step through. Brand new bike. Brilliant. Very very lucky to get our hands here in South Australia as a week after release only 2 small left in the whole country and our dealer had to jump up and down at Specialized to get one. Its Brilliant .
I've been riding and doing video's with the turbo Vado SL for 3 years 😊 awesome bike still no problems , the battery is still at 100% health, if i ever wear it out I'll definitely get another
I liked your video! I especially appreciate the fact you rode your Vado SL in a helmet for the suit! It should increase safety awareness, especially for countries and regions where riding safety awareness is not great...
Great review. I'm squarely on the fence between the Vado SL and an eMBT - the Trek Powerfly 4. Very different bikes for sure. I'll be doing mostly, at least 80% +, road and hard pack tow path trail riding with the family. No communiting. Possibly some dirt trail riding but not true mtb tails. The Vado SL is noticeably lighter, much faster on pavement, and easy to manage even up hill without any motor assist. The Powerfly is heavy and likely much slower and hard to get up a hill without assist, but obviously can go off road on just about any type of condition, plus it has a suspension fork (albeit a very basic coil fork).
Agreed, a great review.! Have you looked into fitting a suspension seatpost? I'm aware of people having fitted them in the US but haven't found any specific details on how to do this online. I've been advised by the Specialized Concept store in Ruislip that it should just be a matter of disconnecting the connectors in the seatube. After removing the Seatpost and pulling out the cables a little, I can't see any connectors just cables. I'd like to fit a Suntour Ncx SP12 to my newly purchased Vado SL 5.0, I had one on my previous bike, a relatively cheap suspension seatpost (in comparison to some) yet quite effective. I'm aware that I would lose the functionality of the rear seat light but I'm happy to fit a separate battery operated rear light. Thanks.
Very good review. Well done my friend. I was thinking about talking my wife into getting this bike for her since she's not a rider and she would like the position. Then we could ride together.
@@RidePureElectric None that I can suggest. You've covered well the core mechanics & electrics. I'm in the US so the bike specs may vary a bit but I'm wondering about the quality of the accessories of things like fenders (mudguards) and rack. Thanks for the comment and insight Connor. As I mention in the video, e-bike ranges can be affected by so many things, e.g. rider weight, tyre pressure, wind direction, ride elevation, the clothing you're wearing, road surface, the list goes on. So what I get on a ride could be very different to you. I like to think of them more as rough guides. Cheers, Joe.
i Had the Vado SL 4.0 but felt that i was being "cheated" out by the speed limiter!! it was just so frustrating as it took away that e-bike fun factor up hills. I installed the Planet3 "delimiter" which worked a treat and made it possible to get more out of the motor. I wasnt worried about decreased range etc as just charged it more often. I added original fenders and rack from Specialized... and then all went up in smoke, when my bike was stolen last week out of my secure bike shed in my "secure" underground garage... thieves just cut through my wall mounted Hiplok AIRLOK like butter with an angle grinder!! So, now looking at replacing with the EQ model with the insurance replacement voucher...
Sorry to hear that, I hope you're able to get another without the long wait. I didn't think that the Planet3 system worked on the vado sl 4.0 and 5.0. Was it relatively easy to fit? Thanks
@@kili8055 I had it fitted by my LBS called Fudges on Harrow Rd, Maida Vale. They knew what they were doing and did a good job. Vado SL 4.0 EQ are in stock currently at £3.100 so I’m in doubt if I get now or wait for price to (hopefully) drop
They're in really high demand at the moment so I'm guessing they're unlikely to drop in price for a while longer but who knows. If like me you're a bit of a fair weather cyclist then it may be worth waiting for a couple of months. Can I ask if you sourced the planet3 system from your LBS or did you buy it separately, if so I'd appreciate the link to the product if possible. One last thing, do you remember how much it cost to get it fitted? Thanks JK

He has a whole bunch of videos as well to show you step-by-step installation. They have a version for all the Vado models, so you can DM him and he always replies quickly. I suppose i was lazy and wanted the part intalled by LBS, as they were familiar with the Planet3. I cant remember but i think they charged £35 for the install. You can speak to Andrew at Fudges. I also had one of those Display units for the Vado, but it becomes useless once Planet3 installed and will give totally wrong speed reading. So just use my iphone with Quadlock as a trip computer if needed... Rgds

Nice video. I work at a Specialized dealer and have built many Vados. If you take the time, you can route and tie-off your cables and wires running to the handlebars to look a little cleaner. Sorry, sloppy cable and wire routing is a pet peeve of mine.
Thanks for a riders view of the bike. I’ve bought into e-biking with my Levo but it’s a bit of a beast for a scoot down country lanes on a summer evening. This looks like the ideal for that an the odd weekend tour.
In Holland this would never be a commuter bike, but more like something one uses in the weekend on dirt roads. How would your suit look if you cycled this in the rain?
A very comprehensive review with video to prove what you're talking about. Could you comfortably ride this bike without power assist until you need it? I'm thinking distances for all day rides that will go beyond the battery range.
Hi Rick, thanks for watching and for the comment! I've ridden this bike with some friends for 40km without assist and it was fine. You won't be breaking any speed records, but it's perfectly reasonable to get about on. Hope that helps, Joe.
Mentioned in the video you are 65kg, and would need something more powerful if you were heavier? I think I need to try one on a steep hill before I commit to buying one. I know the hill you went up, and it is steep.. but the whole point of these for me is to help with the hills
Thanks for a really good review. Not super long and boring but still good and long enough to cover a lot one is looking for in this kind of video! Me myself is trying to figure out if i am going for a heavier MTB E-bike or a bike such as vado sl, lighter more road oriented bike. A small question maybe...How is the Vado SL to ride on gravel roads and /or some more bumpy roads?
Is there no cheaper alternative with similar components without the brand premium? Is this comfortable for 5-6 hour rides daily -good for a cross country bike ride?
What does one to know when one wants buyin a commuter e-bike? How much does the Specialized Turbo cost new in stores? Let's say 50 km daily round-trip, what does it cost yearly, monthly, daily? How much cost the spare parts like chain, cassette, chainwheel, tires, brake pads....? And how long do they last in the average? How long, how many kilometers & months or years, last motor and battery? How long are warranties? This would ve very interesting to know. Thank you very much.
Is it possible to ride the bicycle without the electric motor? So, if the battery is empty, can you still ride it well without it? Or is it cumbersome then?
Hi, thanks for making the video. What are your thoughts on towing a child trailer with this sort of e-assist? Would hills be undoable with the extra weight or just drain the battery quicker? I only have a short 20 minute commute and can charge the battery either end, but not sure if the motor might just simply be unable to provide any noticeable assistance under weight? Thanks in advance! :)
Thanks for the longterm review. Frustrating how the price of this bike has escalated this year. Saw the 4.0 SL advertised for £2,500 at the start of the year but everywhere now selling it for £2,999+. What other e-commuter bikes would you consider in similar price range please?
Hi, thanks for the comment. Have you thought of something like the AMP AL Cross One from BMC? www.pureelectric.com/collections/electric-bikes/products/bmc-amp-al-cross-one-electric-hybrid-bike-2021
Which electric commuter bike do you recommend that has a removeable battery? I'd like to keep my bike outside overnight and charge the battery in my flat.
I have the same tires on a Canyon Grail, they do the same thing in corners. The mini side knobs bend to easily and this results in a washed out feel when weighted on pavement.
@@RidePureElectric I not comfortable with tires and planning on switching out to a 700x40 gravel tire. Right now I have them on my gravel/cross bike and get a more comfortable ride.
Hi Joe, I would love to see a comparison between the Vado SL and the Orbea Vibe. Both have a Mahle Motor (Orbea uses a hub motor). Any experience with the Orbea? Second, can you give an advice about frame size? Looks like you’ve tested the Vado XL or L. My local dealer had only M as a test bike, too small because I am 187 cm tall, leg length about 90. Thanks, Thomas.
Hi Thomas, thanks for the comment. I'm 6ft (183cm) and tested a size large. I felt like it fit perfectly for me. At 187cm it sounds like you may need an XL. Hopefully you local dealer can advise on sizing. Thanks, Joe.
I work in a bike shop and can tell you straight up a hub motor does not even come close to a center motor at the cranks, and Specialized motor is the most natural feeling of all. You ride one of these and a hub motor feels like you’re being pushed.
@@RidePureElectricI nearly purchased it last time but opted for a Cannondale instead - now, I'm contemplating buying this very model as a second back-up. To date, this remains the best review of the Vado SL 4.0. Watching it again.
With the crazy increase on price for ebikes right now specially for the Creo, I'm thinking getting a Vado and converting it to drop bar. Will it ride like a Creo? Obviously not. But with the amount I could save, I would be able to make lots of adjustments in other parts to make up for it I think.
Quick Q for you please. Does the lowest level of assistance give you more than simply make up for the excess weight of the bike? Would you be as quick for the same effort on a decent sirrus? Thanks.
Hi Jonathan, that's a good question, and one I don't think I could properly answer without some back-to-back testing with a Sirrus. What I can say is, at 30% the assist feels fairly subtle on flat and gentle inclines, but once you hit a proper hill I think it more than makes up for the increase in weight of the bike. Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks, Joe.
@@RidePureElectric Cheers - I don't think weight is much of a factor on the flat so am persuaded by our reassurance it helps on the hills even at 30%. So that's me committed to a Vado SL 5 EQ! Will let you know how that works out.
@@jonathanpower7628 Hi John, yes at 30% you definitely feel some assist. It certainly isn't winching you up the climb like turbo mode does, but it helps lessen the strain. As I say in the review, I'm fairly light at 65kg, so if you're a heavier/more powerful rider, e.g. 80kg+, you may find you want to tweak the lower mode to add a little more assist (perhaps 40%) in the Specialized Mission Control App.Thanks, Joe.
Superb explanation and amazing video my friend. I appreciate if you could offer me your advise here. I am struggling to choose between Orbea Vibe H30 and Specialized Vado SL 4. I am looking for good performance and Power and want to ride super smooth in hills so appreciate if you could reply. The confusing thing is Orbea Vibe H30 has 40Nm Torque and 250W Motor Power whereas Specialized Vado SL 4 only has 35Nm Torque and 240W Motor Power so would like to know which one is better performance in hills and alsl overall. Thanks in advance.
Id like to buy a quality bike but need a twist grip. I'm 60 and want to get back knto cycling. I tow a trailer so need something beefy enough to give me that bit of boost starting off on inclines.
Just picked up a 2020 model, and I'm regretting it, big time. The battery life is horrid. There is an available firmware update, but I can't see that making a significant difference. I got about 35km mostly in Sport mode, and when I saw how it was draining, I put it in Eco mode for about 15% of my ride. I arrived at my destination, just over 30km, and Mission Control showed that I had 7% left. My other ebike, (Qualibike, about a quarter of the price), gets 80km on a charge.
Hi, these are made by Topeak. So far I've really enjoyed using them and they're super quick to install. Thanks, Joe. www.pureelectric.com/collections/mudguards/products/topeak-defender-set-tx-up-to-700x44c
Hi, great review video. I am looking to buy an e bike for the first time. I have always ridden bikes and have been pretty fit. Unfortunately I’ve had a few health issues but don’t want to pack in riding completely. I enjoy gravel riding mainly, where I live I can ride on a mix of quiet lanes, tracks and bridleways. Some of which can be rough, but not enough to warrant a mtb. It’s also very hilly. I currently ride a drop bar gravel bike, but I’d like a new bike to have flat bars and a more comfy riding position. The Vado seems to be marketed as a commuter bike (I’d use it for this too) but want to know if it would be a practical alternative to my gravel bike on the days I need that e assist. Thank you.
Hi! Thanks for your question. The tyres they come with are great and aren’t prone to wear and tear - however we would also recommend the Schwalbe marathon E+ (which we sell) Thanks, Team Pure
Hi Darian - Great to hear that you love your new bike! To assist with the noise issue, we would suggest that you degrease, rinse, dry and lube the chain.
For commuting 15km per day and weekend riding, I can’t decide between the Turbo Vado and the Turbo Vado SL? Anyone else have this dilemma and how you decided?
specialized turbo vado sl you talk about the bike been ok to go up hill for a 60 to 80Kg body weight, im more like 95kg does this mean I need to seek a different bike and if so what do you recommend? thank you .
There is no real weight preference for e-bikes - but of course the lighter you are the less power is needed and therefore the battery would last longer.
The bicycle lights are amazing. I love how bright it is. The only downside to these bicycle lights, are if you are on any shared pedestrian/cyclist paths - they really irritate some pedestrians if you're cycling at night. A weaker light you wouldn't need to worry about adjusting the light every time you hop onto those shared paths.
i have an alez right now. just moved to a new city that has LARGE hills so im looking for an ebike. i routinely hit 30-35mph on the flat and 45+ down hill. will the motor restrict top speeds? i currently have a 52 front and 28 cassette, does this bike feel like it can handle such gearing or would the motor torque out? i dont really care as much about boosting at really low speeds as much as i do keeping me at a minimum and helping me say above 25mph as much as possible. will this do that?
I thought the same after my first 20 mi ride, but now i really like it, 780mi and i must be used to it by now. Its funny i thought the same way about the seat on my emonda, and now i like it too
How much do you think I’d suffer as a 80kg rider with a rucksack going to work, it’s about 6 miles each way with 300ft elevation, my main want is to get to work without needing to shower
Hi, thanks for the comment. Considering your total mileage each day will be around 12 miles you can easily ride the Vado SL in boost mode the whole time, so it shouldn't be a very strenuous ride. While most of my testing was done in the colder months, I never felt overly sweaty after a hilly ride, so I think you'd be ok on that front as well. Another tip is to avoid wearing a backpack and put everything on your bike when travelling to work. I've often found you end up with a big patch of sweat on your back when using a backpack. Hope that helps! Joe.
@@RidePureElectric thanks Joe, this is hugely helpful given I’ll be buying online without being able to try one IRL, seems this is a great choice though, thanks!
It's a great bike, but those ranges are not indicative of user experience. I cycle around Richmond Park, at about 25 KPH. Staying on the highest assist mode (mode 3, turbo mode), I can only get 40 KM out of 100% battery. I have never gotten more than 50KM out of 100% of battery. Anyone else?
Can I ask how the bottom bracket fares, what sort of life span. I am looking at the bike and well the tyres are chunky which makes the rider work much harder. I found such tyres unable to cruse, you seem to be constantly working to get the bike to move because of the tyres resistance. Range is extended by not constantly using the assist on flat sections or down hills, this bike seems to require the assist to be on constantly mainly because of the tyres. Experience has taught me chunky tyres are just hard work on any surface except dedicated cross country path ways such as mountain bike trails. A normal bike with 28c road tread tyres will work far better on a commute bike far less resistance and in the right gear you can cruse along quite quickly with very little effort because there is far less tyre resistance. You may want to try putting some Durano plus 700x28c tyres on that bike you may triple it's range.
No mudguards, no chain guard, no kickstand, no wheel lock, no front suspension, no seat suspension, no puncture resist tyres, little silly tail light fitted in the worst position....and you recommend this thing for daily commute?
I have 1,500 miles on this bike, 95% of them commuting to work. It’s an amazing commuter. I’ve gone tubeless to avoid flats and am in the process of upgrading the brakes but aside from that, this thing is solid.
I have a trailer for my kid behind the bike and i can easily go over 120km on ECO mode. I have tuned the SPORT mode for my 55km work commute and then the battery is empty after 60~65 km, but i ride 38km/h at this point.

I liked your video! I especially appreciate the fact you rode your Vado SL in a helmet for the suit! It should increase safety awareness, especially for countries and regions where riding safety awareness is not great...
For USA buyers: components are now SRAM GX, boost available to 28 mph. I’ve had mine for 3 months and love it.
Fantastic review/channel, thank you, subscribed
I own this exact bike and I found your review to be incredibly accurate. Very well done my friend!
Thanks for your lovely comment Paul! :)
Thanks for the informative review. Wondering if there is room for some wider tires?
Thanks.
Can we modify the limit to say... 18-20 Mph?

@@RidePureElectric None that I can suggest. You've covered well the core mechanics & electrics. I'm in the US so the bike specs may vary a bit but I'm wondering about the quality of the accessories of things like fenders (mudguards) and rack. An example is www.specialized.com/us/en/turbo-vado-sl-4-0-eq/p/170202?color=263684-170202&searchText=93920-5402 . I typically deck out my road/gentle trail oriented regular bikes for all weather.

Thanks for the video guys. It's spot on in describing my experience with the bicycle, but I think 53km on 100% is way more than I ever get in mode 3.

Thanks JK
@@kili8055 I use the Vado as my daily home-office commute, so will have to splash out now im afraid. I bought the product direct from the guy who makes it. Alex, at planet3.bike/ .

Nice video. I work at a Specialized dealer and have built many Vados. If you take the time, you can route and tie-off your cables and wires running to the handlebars to look a little cleaner. Sorry, sloppy cable and wire routing is a pet peeve of mine.
Thanks for the tips!
Great review! Did you make any modifications to it?
Thanks for a riders view of the bike. I’ve bought into e-biking with my Levo but it’s a bit of a beast for a scoot down country lanes on a summer evening. This looks like the ideal for that an the odd weekend tour.
In Holland this would never be a commuter bike, but more like something one uses in the weekend on dirt roads. How would your suit look if you cycled this in the rain?
Great review, very informative. Thank you.
Excellent review thanks 🙏
Great to hear you liked it Mark! Are there any videos particular videos you'd like to see on the Turbo Vado SL next? Joe.
"Every time I look at it, I want to ride it!". That's what HE said!
Great video ! Thanks for ur work :D
Good review, but I'm not so clear on all the differences with the American version beyond the 15mph assist vs 27mph assist.
How does this bike compare to the standard Vado?

Hi
How tall are you and what size bike do you ride in the review? Thank you
I have the same tires on a Canyon Grail, they do the same thing in corners. The mini side knobs bend to easily and this results in a washed out feel when weighted on pavement.

You ride one of these and a hub motor feels like you’re being pushed.
superb review - many thanks
Thanks for watching!
@@RidePureElectricI nearly purchased it last time but opted for a Cannondale instead - now, I'm contemplating buying this very model as a second back-up. To date, this remains the best review of the Vado SL 4.0. Watching it again.

Hi! Would you please review the Cecotec Bongo Series A Connected, I'm planning on buying one but I need Michelle's confirmation first :))
80kg+, you may find you want to tweak the lower mode to add a little more assist (perhaps 40%) in the Specialized Mission Control App.Thanks, Joe.
my friend says the motor isnt powerful enough for the big hills...is he right or wrong?

Vado SL EQ is interesting Bike.
How about Centurion Overdrive City Z1000 or Canyon Commuter:ON?
Just picked up a 2020 model, and I'm regretting it, big time. The battery life is horrid. There is an available firmware update, but I can't see that making a significant difference. I got about 35km mostly in Sport mode, and when I saw how it was draining, I put it in Eco mode for about 15% of my ride. I arrived at my destination, just over 30km, and Mission Control showed that I had 7% left. My other ebike, (Qualibike, about a quarter of the price), gets 80km on a charge.
What make is the front mudguard please in the footage out on the road?
Hi, these are made by Topeak. So far I've really enjoyed using them and they're super quick to install. Thanks, Joe.

Thank you.
Which tyres would you recommend for road / wet conditions?
Hi! Thanks for your question. The tyres they come with are great and aren’t prone to wear and tear - however we would also recommend the Schwalbe marathon E+ (which we sell)
Thanks, Team Pure
Just bought one. While I do love it, it’s drive chain is quite noisy. Is there anyway to dampen the noise so it’s not so noticeable?
Hi Darian - Great to hear that you love your new bike! To assist with the noise issue, we would suggest that you degrease, rinse, dry and lube the chain.

Joe
specialized turbo vado sl you talk about the bike been ok to go up hill for a 60 to 80Kg body weight, im more like 95kg does this mean I need to seek a different bike and if so what do you recommend?
Hi Adam, please message us on help@pureelectric.com and we'll be happy to assist with your inquiry!
Too bad the motor isn’t from an established motor manufacturer like Bosch. It’s a noisy bike, but I guess that’s a personal and minor detail.
DeWalt drills are better than bosh 😎
To me the saddle is very uncomfortable and will be switching out to a Brooks B17 saddle. More comfortable on longer rides.
Hi Bill, thanks for the comment. Are there any other videos you'd like to see us do with the Vado SL? Joe.
I thought the same after my first 20 mi ride, but now i really like it, 780mi and i must be used to it by now. Its funny i thought the same way about the seat on my emonda, and now i like it too
A stronger motor and belt drive would be nice upgrades

Thanks for the question!
Yes to the mudguards, no to the rack or panniers I’m afraid 😊 Team Pure
Is your color umber or raspberry?
I deRegged mine to do 40mph. Lunaaaccyyyy!!
Ya 35 mi is most i got in sport , with turbo on the hills . Im saving for the range exstender
This or VonMoof S3 ?
is the battery removeable ???
No
No mudguards, no chain guard, no kickstand, no wheel lock, no front suspension, no seat suspension, no puncture resist tyres, little silly tail light fitted in the worst position....and you recommend this thing for daily commute?
I have 1,500 miles on this bike, 95% of them commuting to work. It’s an amazing commuter. I’ve gone tubeless to avoid flats and am in the process of upgrading the brakes but aside from that, this thing is solid.
