Talking Shift! | What's the BEST sim racing shifter?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 ноя 2019
- Today I'm comparing 5 of the most popular sim racing shifter models from Thrustmaster, Logitech, Fanatec and Aiologs. Some of these are H-Pattern, some are sequential and some do both, so there's not going to be a clear 'this is the sim racing shifter to buy' recommendation at the end of the video. But, if you're interested in finding out how some of the most popular sim shifters on the market stack up, then stick around.

There is a mode on TH8A which it can be used as handbrake, and resistence can be adjusted too.
Wow really? How do I adjust the resistance?
Sorry for not being able and willing and ready to be a great day bot 😬 the same Android app and thought you might be able and willing to this email 😊😊😊😀😊😊😊😀😊😁😁😊😀😁😁😊😀😊😁😁😀😊
SnackDestroyer Thanks!
@Zwenk Wiel me too, the screw is plastic garbage
Ya to anyone wondering about the resistance on the th8a is is crap and make almost no difference changing it and if you do change it is loosens up again easily.
"If you're on a budget the th8a is the clear winner" I think your view of 'budget' is different than mine. Great video though.
Understand you very well. There is no other option though... Well, other than the Logitech Driving Force, but that one is a total mystery (in terms of it being worth the money), because the reviews of it are quite contrary from being a waste of money to be worth the price 100%. Go figure...
There's definitely a place in the market for a another option it seems in between the Logitech's DF and Thrustmaster's TH8A. Either Logitech ditch the DF and actually MAKE A NEW better shifter (instead of reusing the old model from G27 and sell it as standalone) and sell that in ~£80 range or Thrustmaster makes a cheaper one (what seems very unlikely) in the same £80 otherwise £140 for a stick seems bit too far and £30 way too cheap for regular consumers like me and you.
@@armands3153 I feel you, thrustmaster needs a Driving Force shifter equivalent with better build quality and more room between the gears.
@@armands3153 if the th8a WAS £80 it would be worth it then, they don't need to make a cheaper shifter they only need to charge people what the shifter they already make is actually worth (at the end of the day its a magnet on a stick with a £2 hall sensor) it is seriously overpriced for what it is.
my thrustmaster TMX wheel and 3 pedal set cost less ffs.
there is no way anybody at TM could justify the £160 price tag when you look at the sum of its parts compared to other thrustmaster products.
there's no way this shifter is more expensive to make than my TMX wheel (sure the tmx is an entry level wheel but it has FAR more materials, far more electronic parts, and far more mechanical parts than their shifter. (and that's not even counting the pedals)
@@chemicalBR0 exactly, it's almost pushing me to cheap out and get the g29 along with the Logitech gear stick
ikr,it’s a whales game,simracing now,the rich get richer,the poor get the picture.....
I honestly feel like every Logitech shifter after the G25 is a downgrade since they removed the H-pattern to sequential dial.
G25 shifter > G27 shifter > G29 shifter

Good shout, it's on my list!
I don't have a shifter yet but 100% that's the one I'm getting. Barry from SRG liked it a lot.
Same with the sequential shifters from Simworx
@@ChrisHaye I love mine, it's not realistic, but it's quiet and smooth with easily adjustable tension. It's better than the TH8A but not quite up to the level of a Fanatec, but it can switch between the sequential and h-pattern modes so quickly and is easy to do even in VR.
Another convert to the SHH club here, order placed :P
I've got the TH8A MK1. Great budget shifter that can do H pattern and Sequential, but bloody hell it's loud!
The original ones can't be a handbrake either from what I gather, and you can adjust the stiffness of the H pattern.
Yeah, I think I've fallen foul of that in this video. They seem to have added a few features since I bought mine!
Well in fact you forgot to say that the TH8A can be used as a handbrake on PC and some games on PS4 by direct USB connection..
OH and it allows to ajust resistance...
Gordjy the originals can be adjusted for resistance, but can’t be used as a handbrake. The new ones can.
Yeah it's pretty loud. I ended up taping a thin piece of foam around the stalk of the shifter, to dampen the worst clunks when smashing it into gear. :)
I feel like this could have been created in 2 videos. I feel like comparing Sequential Shifter and H Pattern Shifter is way to different and should be compared separately.
agree, personally I like H shifter more because I drive street cars and drifting
Couldn't agree more with you, like they are not even close to the same thing. They do the same basic thing, but in completely different ways.
exactly ones more racecar exclusive or driftspec style with the sequential. whereas a h pattern is in every manual car on the road and a nice bonus with the 7th gear to
The thrustmaster th8a comes with a table clamp so that's a bit miss leading and it has threaded holes to mount it to a plate to aluminium profile so
You know you can lock the mounting screws down on the Logitech shifter so you don't bump your hand into them each time you shift, right?
Well I'll be buggered, I never knew this and I've been using a G29 setup for 3 years. While I'm reading your post I've just stretched across and pushed down on the mounting screws and, lo and behold, down they went out of the way... many thanks for mentioning this..
@@MrPropanePete Same for the wheel. But wait until you try mounting and unmounting. They LOVE unlocking. lol
@@rustythefoxcoon5143 Yeah... they seem to like staying locked down. They freed up though after a few goes.
You've got the sequential shifting the wrong way round, forward to downshift and backwards to upshift, even says so in the manual for switching the shifter over.
You're being pulled into your seat when accelerating and upshifting along with usually braking throwing you forward if downshifting, hence forward press to downshift and rear pull to upshift :)
Yeah that's what he's doing
??? thats what he is doing in the video
You can use the TH8A as analogue handbrake, it has an option for that in the driver settings. It's a hall sensor, it reads positioning of the stick, so the 90° turning, you've done for the seq. mode, also is usable with the H-plate, then you switch to analogue in gamecontroller settings and you can pull the stick gradually...nothing really "tactile", but it works.^^
The TH8A does come with a desk mount and can be used as a analog handbrake. Inside Sim Racing made a video on it 4 years ago, I think it was.
Note on the Logitech:
I have the grandaddy G25 and my shifter has sequential capability. :)
I wonder if Logitech shifters are compatible across the different wheel bases. 🤔
You can use g27 shifter on g920 wheel or g29
So i think you can use g25 shifter on g29 or g920
Yes, they are, but only the H-shifter/Sequencial, in case of put G27/G25 shifter on G29.
In G27/G25, both shifters work's fine
Buy Drivehub from collective Minds, and you'll be able to mix almost any pedals/wheel/handbrake/shifter combo you desire. Products that otherwise aren't compatible with each other. Not only that, but it makes my PC-only Logitech Momo and PS3/PC-only Logitech G25, compatible with PS4 or Xbox One if I actually used one.
No_Mercy you can’t use shifters on the t80
just dev so if I don’t have a Logitech wheel but I buy that and the logi shifter it would work as a stand alone device?
I love how to the point this video is with no unnecessary chatter. I wish all review and comparasion videos were like this.
I have not encountered a better person who does help in making people decide which product is the best to buy. Giving all the important points of these products you took a huge headache from me. Thank you so much !
Neat and concise comparison, Chris. Thanks for this.
Thanks Jak :)
Bro u shift so freakin hard i wonder how the gearbox in ur car would be😂🤣

I shift so hard that I litterally shake my whole sim, so I think his shifts are very light, and most of all accurate, since he didn't miss shift the Logitech G series H pattern, when I do really often
I mean I don't think most people drive their cars in the same way that they sim race.
David Lazarus right
That first shift into place with that drop was great
I love your sim racing materials. Great and essential videos. Glad that You help a lot of us, Thank You Chris.
i have been running the g27 with its included shifter for years and years, i think i am nearing the 10 year mark on that piece of kit and it does everything i need from a racing wheel since it has the buttons i need and has a H pattern shifter included in the box. and i'm playing racing sims just for fun and not in a competetive sense so it was right in line with my budget when i bought it for less than $170 on sale. but i have done some real good on the g27, i have been in some tournaments and actually finished fairly decent not too far away from top 10.
it works great still and i use it just cause i enjoy racing simulators so it ticks all my boxes
Just goes to show no matter how much you spend in the end its all down to how quick the driver is. Well Done :)
@@kainurser6426 thanks mate =)
I think that it would have been fair to mention that there are a range of sequential adapters available for the Logitech shifter. They're very cheap and easy to install, which would be perfect for those on a budget.
Absolutely professional, and to the point. Bravo, subbed!
Excellent review and comparison. Very well thought out. Thank you.
My fanatec shifter came with the rj12 to USB connector. Actually my whole fanatec setup came with 3 of them at no extra cost. They do include them now.
Based on Fanatec website it doesn't.
Thanks Chris, have just placed an order for the Aiologs seq shifter :)
Nice. I'm really happy with mine :)
I'm tempted myself but i think the Heusinkveld seq is the one for me more due to size and the fact that if its anything like the Heusinkveld handbrake that i run it should be built like a tank
Hey thanks for all the info ! Presented in very clear manner. Helped make me choose the Aiologs !
commenting for the algorithm. Amazing content Chris, I've been binging your channel all day lol.
The TH8A also has resistance dialing, there is a small screw in the hole on the side, you may have to rotate the unit to get to it. Check the manual.
Well for me I’ve learned that you can also do certain modifications to the Logitech shifter such as adding a 3D printed piece that makes the shifting a bit more stiffer than you would have OR having this 12-18shifter mod (if you’re into trucking simulation such as ETS2 & ATS as well).
Great video too :)
Trucks has no 12 shift positions but additional switches to splitter and range changers.
Nice sensible, straightforward review - just what these products need 👍
thanks to you i learned about the aiologs stick! i will get it for myself as soon as i can afford it. thank you!!!
Logitech used to include the shifter with the G25, G25, & G29 wheels. It even flipped to a sequential shifter by turning a knob. Offering it as an add-on and removing the sequential shifter option is just another sign of how low Logitech has sunk in the past decade.
They still make one of the best mouses on the market, g102.
Thrustmaster TH8A shifter can bee used as a handbrake with in it’s main (neutral) axis. This mode also present in it’s software.
Hi Chris. As a fellow who does not ‘Yet’ own any sort of sim gear, but also as an ex racer, this information is valuable and relevant, I think I will start using Logitech kit, but with a decent rig frame, and wide screen, then upgrade if I enjoy the community and the racing. Many Thanks.
Great video! Editing goals right there 😍
Thanks Laurence :)
Nice review. I'm personally still happy with my TH8A, although i might buy a Fanatac shifter in case the TH8A dies some day (but it' still working great after about 3 or 4 years). Those sequential shifters look nice, but i really want an h-pattern shifter for classic cars, so they're no option for me.
Yeah, honestly, I've been running the TH8A for years now... and while the Fanatec shifter is definitely better, it's far from life changing. If you swap between SEQ and H a lot, it's a nice upgrade though!
@@ChrisHaye Yep, the option to quickly switch between h-pattern and sequential mode is the main reason why i'd choose the Fanatec shifter over the TH8A in the future.

The Logitech g29 is what I use it’s pretty good
Well, the SHH shifter probably won't compete with the Fanatec in terms of feel and quality. But for 100 quid you get flick of a switch flip between sequential and H patter, adjustable resistance, styling options, alternative mounting solutions, swappable plates, 7 plus reverse. I love mine!
Yeah, I'm really keen to try one. They're a nice disruption to the big guys, same with Aiologs. :)
@@ChrisHaye yep i got the SHH NEWT model 2 days ago and im loving it, i was really torn between th8a and shh newt and eventually went for shh, mainly because of the ease of switching between sequential and h pattern. We will see if its durable, for now i can say it feels pretty solid.
Can I use the Fanotech on a G29 racing wheel?

2:15 You know you can latch the tops of those clamp knobs down to keep them out of the way, right? Once the knobs are tightened up, push down on the top of them and twist about 30° clockwise. Release the pressure and they stay down. The clamps on the G29/920 work the same way.

Thanks dude, that's great to hear. That series was a lot of work, so it always nice to hear that people are still getting value from it :)
I personally like the TH8A the most, I've almost tried all of these except for the Aiologs, the TH8A just fits better into my setup.
5:58 The TH8A has a analog handbrake mode on pc only.
I got the Fanatec as part of their main bundle with wheel, base and pedals, so that was exceptional value (for those wanting an entire rig upgrade at once which was the case with me). It's a very solid shifter.
Just wish they released a 6 speed with reverse on the right. Feels strange to feel the click from 1st to 2nd. The rest if the gears are great. Just feels off center to go to 3rd and 4th a little. Probably psychological due to seeing the 7th gear even though it's positioned on the 5th once u actually shift to it after pushing in.
Been using my TH8A for about two years now. I have well over 500 hours driving with it and no problems so far. It makes AC a blast.
I never switch it to sequential or use it as a handbrake, though, so I couldn't tell you how well those features work.
The one I'm using! Lol
The Fanatec SQ 1.5. I've also had the thrustmaster shifter. Prefer the Fanatec.
Great video, thanks! I recently upgraded from the G29 shifter to the Fanatec Clubsport and the difference is immense. With the G29 I always worried I might break it mid-race, kept missing shifts etc. For me, having both H and seq was going to be essential so it was really a question of Thrustmaster vs Fanatec. Still using the G29 wheel & pedals though (a less urgent upgrade need for now)
I think there is only one problem with the g29 and thats the size
Super informative and helpful video, thanks! 👍
the introduction of the music was slick

My favorite of the ones I have is the Fanatec SQ 1.5, but only for H pattern, for Sequential both the HE shifter and SHH is way better.

Almost time for an update to this one Chris it's been a few years now. I would love to see the Simagic Sequential Shifter and maybe a few others thrown into this mix. I just ordered my Aiologs Shifter and HB combo this week can't wait to get my hands on them.
I have the cheapest one you showed, and it broke after like a year. Also the gears will completely miss even if you put them in the right gear. I would recommend the 2nd one. 🙂
Which one
This video inspired me to get the cheapest option lmaoo. I didn't know you could use the logitech shifter seperately that changes everything. Managed to connect an old wheel to use its pedals as a clutch alongside my DFGT so hopefully I'll finally get to experience manual gears in a sim
Neat that you managed to add a clutch to the DFGT. But I don't see how you could possibly add a shifter. I mean, I suppose you could add a USB shifter straight to the PC but I have my doubts that the sim would recognize the wheel appropriately and grant you the ability to use the H shifter. However if I'm wrong please enlighten us.
@@Slakass55 I used a g29 shifter with an eBay homemade adapter to usb. In Logitech's driver software it allows you to use multiple devices for a single game. I also had my flight stick mapped to handbrake
@@CheapskateMotorsports Oh I see. Yes, that makes sense, seeing how the software for the DFGT is the same as the G27 (don't quote me on that but they sure are close).
I have been enjoying my DFGT greatly but as someone that drives only standard in real life, I truly needed to get a set of pedals with a clutch and a shifter. Easiest way was to retire the DFGT and find a used G27. Which I did last week and am in the process of adapting it to my rig. However the idea of using a joystick for handbrake sounds neat. Any chance you have a link to how you did this? Would be a great addition to the "new" G27

Well... I have a whole g25 set, and the very similar shifter has a sequencial mode
This is an outstanding product review.
I have to say now I have hard mounted the Logitech shifter it actually feels a lot better than just with the clamps for people new to sim racing especially on PC the G Shifter plus a USB converter cable and this is the best bang for the buck shifter, would be cool if Logitech made an official adaptor
Great video Chris. The million dollar question though is which shifter spends most of its time attached to your rig?
Historically the TH8A, but right now I'm using the Fanatec and the Aiologs.
Chris Haye do you leave both of them connected or do you have to switch them out?
LMAO. A shifter without H pattern is the best?
Easier to use.
"For sim racing"
it’s way easier and faster
Use the pedal shifters then. Does exactly the same. When you use the clutch you need a h pattern.
@Mason Calhoun hahaha. I do enjoy it in f1 2019 though.
G'day Chris!
Just stumbled across this video and ... wow! ... what a find. Your review is solid as, and from what I can tell, free from bias or favour - which is super hard to find out there in the YooToobs: so many content creators are in the pockets of the hardware manufacturers; which is great for them - not so good for their viewer base.
I've just bought the Fanatec shifter - not had a chance to use it just yet - and your video gives me confidence that I've made a pretty sound decision.
Love your channel, cheers mate.
I use the TH8A Shifter with my TMX FF Wheel, i also have Metal Pedals and a clutch as well, they serve well for Drifting, F1, And IMSA
(holds his Logitech shifter and whispers "It's OK, it's OK, you get to stay...")
The missed shift issue with the Logitech is no joke. I don't know how many times I almost grenaded the engine in the Lancia Fulvia races on SRS on Saturday, going from second to first instead of second to third, but I think it's "all of them". Its price point is the most wallet-friendly of the bunch, but in practice it's also the most "expert-friendly", as you have to be very deliberate in your actions if you don't want to throw it in the wrong direction. I will be interested to see how I fare in my first season in the MX-5 Cup using this shifter (instead of cheating and using the paddles like I did when I didn't have the H-pattern yet).
Heh. Honestly, I think the Logitech shifter is amazing for the money. But for me the gate is really too small for my flailing hands ;)
Is there any way to fix the Logitech issue, it does my fucking nut in.
I don't know if they revised them or what but I've never had an issue finding gears. It's nicer then some real cars driven. Try a classic car and you'll understand what slop is.
There’s lots of gentle hand-on-knob action in this video. It’s making me sweaty.
I bought the Frex Sequential Shifter many years ago. IMO that is one of the best options price/performance. I had to get it shipped from Japan but it wasnt to much more than the TH8A in the end. It is a really simple design but it feels like a real piece of kit that could have been used in a race car. I mounted it to my then super sturdy DIY wooden rig and I could really thrash on the shifter and not be worried one bit.
thanks for the great video! Learned a lot from it! With shifters compared, are you gonna to discuss which racing simulator/game has the best clutch/transmission model? I liked the tyre model of rf2, but according to comments on the internet, it seems rf2's transmission model is not quite realistic. I tried to find a more realistic one, but there aren't many videos/threads about this aspect.
I have that "shitty" logitech shifter. Miss shifts? Just learn how to use it better. I NEVER had miss shifts with it.
ikr same for me. And I don't even have a car.
Its a great budget shifter that cant called shitty for its price
Ikr thank you someone finally agrees with me I’m 12 and I don’t miss shifts
Same, ive been using the same one for about 3 1/2 years
Yep, all I did was change the gear knob but I love it
Will anything else work on logitec other that their own shifter? On xbox
nah
anything USB connected
Yes. I use th8a with the g27.
I have the T8HA (looking at upgrading to the fanatec one when money allows) and I love that it has changable resistance, but also found that if i tighten the resistance (which starts quite weak), it loosens off again after maximum, a lap, at any standard race track, which makes H-pattern in VR very difficult and mis-shifts quite frequent
Clear explanation. Thanks!
Thanks for the test! The winner IMO is the Logitech, because of its cheap price, and its multi functions: you can use it both as a sequential shifter and a handbrake if you put a 40 mm rubber O-ring on it. Also you can use it as H-shifter if you remove the rubber from one of the two screws ;)

I wonder why you choose to drive with the gearstick on your right hand, when your accent very much makes me believe you are from the UK... Meaning the gearstick on your Mx-5 would be in your left hand?
Probably to showcase the shifter better. I'm not too sure but the left side looks pretty close to the wall. Maybe a camera wasn't able to be setup on that side in the same way? Guess the rig could of been moved or something. But that's just my guess.
traditionally shifters are on the right in most racecars - look at the original ford gt - right hand drive and with the stick on the right. plus most race cars are LHD so the shifter would be on the right
@@tomasackermanferreira8911 Yeah, Ford GT has gearstick on the right, but being an American car, in which the driver sits on the left, that makes a lot of sense. In my original comment I was just making the remark that due to us driving on the left of the road in the UK it makes more sense for us to have the gearstick on our left as that is what we have in our day to day road cars. As you mention there are probably decent reasons for doing so in the sim setup.
@@Arthur-ej5gi The original Ford GT was developed in the UK and was RHD, but the gearstick was also on the right near the door. its worth a google it looks strange but another example is the Mclaren F1, with the central seating position and stick on the right. In fact, nearly all F1 cars had the stick to the right regardless of the country of manufacture
I'm from UK and drive LHD I sim, partly because that's what majority of cars in sims are and partly because of space I have. Makes VR a bit weird in a RHD car but you get used to it....plus when i hire cars abroad it doesn't feel so unnatural shifting with my right hand
Chris,
I own the Aiologs shifter but notice that you have a different shifter knob than the one supplied or the one currently shown on their web page. It does not even resemble the knob on their handbrake unit. Is yours an after market knob? If so where did you get it as I am after something similar for my shifter? Great video.
Thank you very much! Now I know that I really shloud by the fanatec shifter :D
Personally. I use the Logitech shifter and it’s good for sim trucking and some racing but not a lot.
"enjoy the rest of your day", im gonna make sure to enjoy all 3 minutes of it
The new TH8A does include a desk clamp and adjustable H pattern resistance. I’m not sure if it can do handbrake but from what I’ve read it’s posible with some software trickery.
One more you need to try is the Ricmotech mod for the TH8a. It's good enough that I now use it as my dedicated seq shifter.
The thrustmaster shifter has a handbrake function...
