Too little, too late. It's a compliance car and a test bed for future models to see what works and what doesn't with consumers.

Needs to have literally double the range. Also to everyone that is so surprised, this is precisely what we would call a "Compliance car," i.e vehicles that were only made because the manufacturer is required by certain states and countries to sell a certain number of EVs. See Toyota Rav4 EV, original mini cooper ev, and many others.

I think you're absolutely right. Best case senario they're also using this as a development vehicle to figure out the manufacturing and supply chain for EV powerplants. I feel like Mazda gets top marks for styling and the 'premium' feel of their vehicles, but this entry into the EV space is weak.
I've been a Mazda customer since 2005 and between my wife and I we've had 8 models over those years. I'm pretty much decided on an EV for my next purchase or lease and would love to stay with Mazda, but if this is all they have to offer then I'll have to look at other options. That's unfortunate because otherwise I'm very satisfied with them.
@@shanepeterson7328 My wife and I are in almost the exact same scenario. We've leased 4 different Mazda's over the past few years, but our next lease is up in about a year and are considering going electric, but unfortunately we will probably have to look elsewhere.
@@TransformHypnosis It's not a "compliance car". They *wanted* to make this a PHEV with a rotary engine, that never happened though, so they released what they had already developed without the engine as an EV. Hence the small battery, relatively weak motor, and big empty space under the hood.
People aren’t willing to make so many compromises on EVs anymore.
EVs with city car ranges need to come with lower prices. This thing is trying to sell for a price that cars with a 2.5x larger battery are fetching.
Just like the BMW i3, this Mazda makes no sense when priced as new but looks really attractive used down to around $10-$15k. The i3 has become a really popular sub $15k EV now as actual nice golf carts can cost more.
Surely we are past that almost decade ago i3 attitude of ‘there learning so I’ll accept the limitations’ - also it’s a retro mod hence the weird open engine bay. I like it a lot but not at this price point.

Yeah I like it and I don’t hate the idea of ‘smaller battery - you don’t need crazy range/performance’ all that is fine but at a price. I mean the rev head in my lives that they are making in line sixes with RWD but surely bespoke EV’s should be the focus that new platform only has nine years to live.
This car feels like something they threw together to "convince" the shareholders that they don't need to make EVs.

@@quixomega It's not. A CX-30 EV also exists (in China), this is a complete new car. The small battery and big empty space under the hood are because this was originally meant to be a rotary engined PHEV. The rotary part ended up being abandoned and they released it as it was instead of completely redeveloping the car as a big battery BEV.
Until recently, I used to drive one of these as a company car in Germany with a 26km commute one way. In normal city traffic, it consumed exactly 8% range each way, with HVAC mostly off. So if you are light-footed and don't need AC, you can go well over 200km on one charge. It's more than enough range for commuting, but not in comparison to the competition.
I am yet to test drive any EV, but I would like my EV to be a member of the 400km per charge club. I drive a maximum of about 80km a day.
I would love to buy an ev for my commute but the average EV costs about 45k, for a car that would cost 25k if it weren't electric. I keep hearing that the costs are coming down but i still haven't seen it.

In Most of the US , driving without AC is almost a death sentence.
The charge network in Canada sucks, it wouldn't be a great idea to stray too far from home with this and in the winter the range would be much worse. You can't survive without heat in the winter.
if they wanted to make it such a short range car, they should have cost cut everywhere and make this a budget EV. not inclined to spend that kind of money on a tiny urban vehicle

I don't understand the use case scenario for cars like these. As a 2nd car maybe. If you live in the city, what you need a car for is to go visit family, or go to a cottage, or go on vacation, and you can't reasonably do any of these things in this vehicle.

And that’s not all. 200lb.ft for an ev? I think you can buy ICE cars for the same price and more torque so it feels more agile.
My 2016 Audi A3 has 258 lb-ft (350Nm) of torque. 200lb-ft is pathetic for an EV. All of my ideal EVs have between 339 and 774 lb-ft (460 to 1050Nm) of torque.

I drive less than 50 miles (tad bit more than 80 kilometers) daily, and this poor range would make me a bit nervous.

@@joseeduardo4327 I almost never use the climate controls (except in winter when I set it to either 21 or 22°C, running low). My ideal EV has to go at least 425km between charges. I do live right at sea level, and my area's winters get pretty cold. But I read some articles and found out the heat does more long-term damage to the battery than the cold. And the hottest summer days where I am can exceed 35°C. Coldest winter days range between -12 and 3°C, and up to 8 degrees if I get lucky.
Compliance car? Yes. Most effort put into a compliance car? Also yes.
Honda E is a much nicer version of a compliance car

I live in Italy and they’ve been selling it for more than one year and I have to say that I’ve seen a surprising amount of these in the road. I once drove one and i hat the same feeling you had, it’s quite slow and not that well organised, there is not much space in the back seats, the trunk is small, and under the bonnet there is sooo much unused space, but on the other hand, the interior is waaaay better than the ones of the competitors, better materials, much less crappy plastic, and more soft bits
The weak motor and huge gap under the hood (and small battery) are because this was originally supposed to be a PHEV.

My problem with this is not the range but the price.
@@gamestar8180 yeah having kids is definitely a massive financial responsibility. As far as range goes, I don't think babies can go too far, but they will build strength and stamina over time.
The MX-30 looks GREAT, in person. Visited my local dealer today for a viewing. Great job, Mazda. The interior is utilitarian. Great fit and finish. Love the rear suicide doors. Tight fit to enter and exit the rear, so not likely great for adults. So looking forward to the PHEV version next year.

Got one and its really nice actually. Has fast charge connect and at max you get about 130miles a charge. If you feel you need 200+ miles per charge thats understandable. If you charge at home or at fast charger points then that shouldn't be too much of a hassle.
It comes with a charge cord and $500 charge credit at charge point also.
Its not slow either. Given the price and all the technology (check the specs)....this is a good buy.

this isn't even close to be a "good buy". You can argue that range isn't an issue, but not at that price and not with other drawbacks this car has.

@@JeepLove it's not a good buy at $35k. You are basically getting scammed. And sales numbers shows this. Only 505 MX-30 was sold in US in a year. But OK, it's a niche car, i get it. Lets compare it to another niche car - Mazda MX-5. About 10547 were sold in US in 2021. That is 20 times more than this electric abomination.

I like both but I'm more biased towards the EV6's darker interior. I know they are literally the same but I like darker interiors, the fast charging is also highly interesting.

In 2020, Hyundai/Kia sold 5.5 million vehicles globally. Mazda sold 1.2 million. Simply put, Mazda is a tiny player in the auto industry, and quite likely simply doesn't have the money to afford proper EV development while still maintaining its current product line.
Screw the Ioniq 5, I'd have a classic Ioniq over this any day of the week! More range, charges twice as fast, proper doors, available used for a fair price...
I saw a few comments here about it being a compliance car… I think that is true. I think Mazda might be waiting for a breakthrough in battery EV tech to release a compelling EV. That or they just simply want to keep shareholders semi happy for now.
Love this car! It is perfect as a second car for commuting and daily trips to the town (we live 20 miles outside), and since we need 2 cars anyway we have a diesel with 700 miles range and plenty of space for the whole family. We save more money on gas then the finance for this car, so a new car for "free". Really fun to drive, very comfortable, and very nice equipped with Bose sound system, head-up display, 360 camera etc.
We are just the target group for this car, if you only need one car and need to do 100+ miles every week, this is not the car for you, but for us, it's perfect.
And it sells really well here (Sweden), it was 6 month waiting time here, when they had a lease campaign it sold out in 2 hours...
I'm definitely intrigued to see what the 2023 rotary hybrid version will be like. Would love to learn how that might push this so-so model into something more substantial. Definitely love the design. A shame this initial version is missing on range and some other common sense elements.
The game has moved on Mazda, get with the times, 160km is not even close to enough.

One thing that got me when watching this was how quiet the interior was. Throughout most of the video, you could barely hear any wind or tire noise! If you want an EV that blocks out a lot of outside noise, this might be worth a look.

Great review guys. A major issue with the MX 30 is a battery's lifespan is judged in major part by how many full charges/discharges it has to take that affects the lifespan. The issue with a tiny battery is that over a few years it will be charged/discharged so often. That makes the MX 30 have a shorter lifespan up front than any other vehicle Mazda makes. I absolutely love Mazda but this isn't even close yet due to the large number of full charge cycles it will take almost daily that will definitely shorten its lifespan.
MX-30 is 176 Wh/km while Model 3 SR is 146 Wh/km and gets you 350 km of range.
This Mazda just plain sucks.
Would you mind showing me where you got these numbers? The rated range is 161km with a 35.5kwh battery my math says that is 220Wh per km. Thanks.
I love that everyone hates this car cause i just saw it for 28k used with only 1k miles on it 😍😍😍😍😍 i barely drive so range is not an issue for me and i dont chase the zoom zoom feel lol so a slow start is fine with me. So far this is my top choice!!
I did the same thing 5 months ago, the dealer couldn't get rid of it so I joked around with not being able to afford an EV, so the joke became real when he said he could swap it for my small cheery ICE car and if I threw 20K inbetween it's mine. And ofc. I took it, its the first edition with some premium trims + 3 color, had it for 5 months now, and I can't stop driving it, it's a dream to drive. People don't get this is not competing on range, it's a city car with luxuries - if you want some more than just a popping janky screen and a pedal.

I REALLY wanted this to have the range extender. I think the whole 100miles with the rotary extender would've been so cool to do and really act like a gap that could be filled, but the complete lack thereof makes me sad.

I know on my previous CX-5 you could do this complex mazda Konami code to get just the halo light on while in motion. It did actually work. I can dig up the sequence if interested. Found it on reddit.
i dont own a mazda but its an interesting thing to know, if its not to hard for you to find out where you got it from, i would be thankfull if you could share it with me

1) Press ignition twice w/ no brake
2) Make sure lights are off and parking brake is on (Pull back)
3) Press brake pedal (for remaining steps)
4) Toggle OFF to PARK and back 5x
5) Press Hazards 10x
6) Toggle OFF to PARK and back 5x
7) Press down on parking brake to turn OFF
8) Turn on engine, switch lights to parking lights and move the vehicle to confirm DRL settings.
This took a few tries. From what I recall, this puts the running lights while in parking light mode to only show the halo. When in parking light mode and not moving, this is the default view but when the vehicle gets above like 5mph it switches on the center lamp (and stays on). I liked having the halo only for aesthetic reasons and also as a nice soft light at night if you wanted to use headlights to see something but not blind your neighbors.
I like the MX30. You can make the tires squeel on almost any turn. The suicide doors are cool but there's not realy space for 4 people.
I saw an article recently on how the next CX50 will also be full electric. The battery is expected to be bigger than in the MX30.
The fact that the engine compartment exists means they made it as an afterthought. They probably had to for government compliance and whatnot, but that doesn't mean they enjoyed it.

I love and hate it for about the same reasons, with one important caviat. I got it at a very competitive lease price. It started at 299 euros a month, which prices it below basically every EV alternative. I specced it up to the nicer trim, to 4 instead of 6 years and 15.000 instead of 10.000 kilometers and I'm still only paying 406 euros a month. Yes the range is garbage, but everything else about it is just so gorgeous and characteristic and I love it.

Iirc I looked it up when that turn signal debuted on the CX-30 and Mazda basically described it as mimicking a pulse. I thought it was a pretty cool approach and definitely different than 95% of turn signals out there.

This car is so confusing and full of contradictions. It's meant to be urban, but with ugly off-road ish body cladding? Looks like a SUV, but configured to be an inconvenient 4 doors coupe? Sporty looking compact, but behaves like a weak compact car. The interior looks really nice though, disregarding all of the weird ergonomic issues 🤔🤣

For who this electric vehicle targets, Mazda did a good job. It looks great, charges pretty quick, and has plenty of nice interior qualities.

This is such a compliance car. I love Mazda, but I really wish they put more effort into this. That rotary PHEV/hybrid better be good.
I don't think it needs more range, but this makes a very strong case for EV bikes and scooters.
All the power to Mazda for entering the EV market but with a range of 161km, I think they're going to have a hard time selling this vehicle. I fully understand the whole city commuter car but for $50K, I can't see a whole lot of people buying this car..
In other markets it’s offered as a hybrid, which I think makes more sense.
@@daveowen378 I think hybrid would be the way to go until they have a solid EV platform that they can rely on.. But on the other hand, they won't really know until they out themselves out there. I can only imagine the costs incurred relating to building an EV that is almost guaranteed to fail at this point..
MX stands for Mazda Experimental. The MX-5 was a 'Mazda Experimental' project, it sold really well and they just kept the name. So it makes sense it's under the MX branding if they made it just for the sake of it, but not to actually sell well. I guess we'll see the more mainline Mazda EVs coming in the next few years.
Woah, that's really interesting. I actually like the idea of making 'experimental cars'. Unlike concepts, these will actually be sold and be used to inform them about what to work on in future vehicles. It's a clever idea.
Considering how expensive the development cost of a car is (especially one you're going to market). PRETTY SURE you want them to sell well, regardless!!
@@yanboa This will be used to inform future EV's and probably parts incorporated in them. So the production costs (and design) won't go to waste even if it were to flop. For e.g. VW made the Bugatti Veyron for publicity, despite the fact that they make a loss on every car sold. In this car's case, it's probably also largely an experiment to determine how desirable Mazda as a brand is (especially with a premium interior and good looks) and how many will buy it despite the hefty price tag.

In Poland this car cost about 38'000 CAD. Just don't chose high trim (why you need that in city), and price should be identical. It's great little car as a daily.
We use this as our only car. 2 adults and 3 children. Fantastic car.

MX = Mazda Experimental, they use it for different type of cars. MX5 is their experiment with lightweight cars, MX30 is their experiment for EV

that's stupid Mazda press speech. There were more than a few MX branded cars in the past and all of them were sporty cars. Meanwhile, the mx30 is not sporty nor experimental, it's a lazy alibi car.
I do see what mazda says about the plastic cladding giving a better shape to the eye overall.
its main competitors in Europe will be the VAG products ID4, Enyaq and Q4 etron, and while they are still not great, they definitely offer a lot more for the money

The MX-30 would be great for me, who lives on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean (Oahu, Hawaii). I refill the gas tank of my small Nissan Sentra car after 140 miles of driving every month (actually, if I just go to my dialysis appointments three times a week, I can refill my gas tank every two months).
I don't know why I'm up at 2AM on Monday, but here I am.

In Canada (Quebec), the price for a 2023 MX-30 GS is 44,500$ + taxes. After that, you take 12,000$ off the price (credit from provincial & federal governments) and then, another 4,000$ off the price (Mazda rebate). So the final price is 35,100$ taxes included. Yes it has a lower range than the others in the same class (Kona, Soul, Bolt, Leaf etc...) but also has a lower price. I won't use the car in winter time as my wife has an AWD vehicle. I rarely drive more than 80 km/day (running errands) and will be using it from may 01 to october 31. BTW, I've done more than 180 km with 15% left. I must say that I'm a pretty smooth driver and I drive usually no more than 10-15 km/h over the posted speed limit. 😁 If it was my only vehicle, I would have bought a Bolt EUV with 460 km range (more than 12 months for delivery) !!! 😕

I travel 400-600 miles one weekend a month. I honestly love Mazda and I wish they change the CX-5 to an electric. It doesn’t have to go super fast like Tesla but at least fast enough to have a little fun or to get around people. 100 miles is nothing because especially if you don’t have a “house” to charge it from. If Mazda changed it to having 250 miles to a charge and at least 200-250 hp, use the CX-5 model and touch screen infotainment... I’d buy it.
Wow, so many bad comments because of the range😆. The range is up to 265, and more than enough for daily driving in the town, with possibilty for travel longer distances. Its all about planning out the trip(Nothing worse). I own it by myself and the range is more than enough for me. If you want longer range, maybe you should look in something else.... I really like the design of both exterior and interior. What a lovely electric car😍
For EV, range distance is everhthing since there are way fewer charging station than gas station and it takes way longer time. Plus, shorter range also means you have to be mindful for charging more often. I mean sure, you can use this only for commute or city driving with this pathetic range. But why limit yourself by choosing this car while you can simply choose other better EVs?

I'd love to see myself owning this EV from Mazda as I am currently a CX-3 owner and love Mazda but the driving range is just too low even for city driving.

I think cars like this could work if they sell it like a "starter" base model with the idea that someone could upgrade the battery/performance later. Maybe Mazda should team up with Makita and come up with some upgrade/add on battery packs so people can add 100 miles of range later if they need or pull up to a battery swap station to refill in 10 minutes.

They were right to expect not to sell many of these. I think a lot of people would rather bump up to a Honda E over this one. Considering ranges and all that.

This vehicle is a perfect example of why I don’t care for Mazda. I agree that this thing seems thrown together in a hurry just so they can get an EV on the market. Does not seem like a well thought out car.
If anything it should be impressive they're fighting the trend so hard.
A 35kwh battery is way too small for a vehicle of this size. The Volkswagen ID4's battery in its largest form is well over twice as big.

@@Winglewanglewongle if you’re new to the auto industry and Mazda is an upper mainstream brand that appeals to enthusiasts and those that enjoy driving dynamics, many people see them as the japanese BMW. Maybe you live in a different part of the world where Mazda’s (a smaller brand) aren’t sold but you can find many magazines and articles to learn more about them.
161 kilometer range is fine for me and I don't want to drag around another 400 kilos of battery for the sake of my twice a year road trips.
Pity about the silly spats around the wheel arches though.
