  • Monday July 5th, 2021 at Katmai National Park, Brooks Camp. Momma bear (708 Amelia) walks the Brooks Falls trail with two 2-year cubs and I got a bear selfie. Once we saw them approaching, we grouped up and pushed off the trail as best we could. By chance, most folks were behind me and I couldn't really push back off the trail much further. It was breath taking to have such a cool encounter with these beautiful and wild animals.

    I would never ever EVER let my child get that close to a mother bear. It’s almost like asking for it.

      This particular place hasn’t had an incident except for a bear that knocked someone over accidentally. If there’s any place that’s safe to view brown bears, Brooks falls is the place to be. They’re so hyper focused on the salmon run they don’t have time for anything else. They also don’t associate humans as threats or as food in this highly controlled park.

    Reviewing people's comments really shines light on how naive, a lot of people are. In Yellowstone NP, and Glacier NP, and many many, more places if I recall correctly from memory. When you leave the domain of people, and you chose too trek, hike, bike, skateboard, or stroll, plus do any number of other activities in nature. You are, I say "voluntarily" choosing to do it. On your "OWN". No one is forcing you to do it. There is usually no one guiding you, unless you pay them too. My point is this. These Parks, and remote locations, places unique in nature, are still basically the way they were created. Except for a few comforts, amenities, that we as humans have provided, they are unaltered. Some of the comments below made no sense, what so ever. As the person or persons? Who made them obviously had no clue of what they the individuals in the video clip were dealing with, or where they were at the time. Please forgive me if I seem rude, outspoken, or unkind? I'm not trying to be that way. In light of the previous video, I just wanted the other people, too realize, how exceptionally fortunate those people, and there families were, in thier encounter with the Bears.
    Again I Thank You for your Video.

    at 0:25 it looked like the bear was displaying the early stages of aggressive behavior, or at the very least starting to consider the people as a threat, which may be why the group started getting louder, because they could also sense it.

    Come on viewers! I agree with Sue trubit a commentor below. Let's quit being so judgemental, on the encounter? The Bears, Amelia n her cubs, and the hikers and the spectator's are sharing a mutual trail or path in the encounter. By the look of it there was very little room too allow right of way. This I mean by both parties! Thank God in the outcome it turned out the way it DiD. FYI and by observation I think this proves that animals in nature, and generally, will abide, and co-excist with us when we allow them too. Great 👌👌 video you got there "Man", and Thank You for sharing it with US. Wyo, Robert, 🇨🇦🇺🇸🇨🇦🇺🇸👍👍🌈🌈🙏🙏😎😎

    My goodness, everyone is a judge here. Nobody is encroaching, just walking a marked path that happens to be the same path the bear and her cubs are walking. No point running away, that would make things worse. Getting off the path as far as you could, was the wise move. It was a crazy encounter that 'could' have gone one of two ways. Thankfully it went the good way. Great video! And if you're not fazed by the bears, I'm sure the negative comments won't be of of any concern.

    Are we supposed to be so loud and yell at grizzly bears? I know we should toward black bears..Shouldn't we just keep calm and quiet until they leave? The men in the video sound so loud and annoying even to me. lol Don't trigger bears in order to protect them and humans. I love bears and nature but after watching and reading how dangerous and strong grizzly bears are...I can't go to Alaska.

    • @skeletalsimon
      @skeletalsimon  3 года назад +1

      According to the Katmai National Park Rangers, yelling/shouting/clapping are appropriate in this scenario when a bear walks up on a people hiking trail so that the bear is aware of people presence throughout the entire time they are in proximity. Trying to avoid any surprise of where people are and stay obnoxious so that the bear wants to leave.

    • @RB-hw1hg

    • @skeletalsimon
      @skeletalsimon  3 года назад +10

      There are rangers around the park, but they're not escorting groups around or guiding or anything. When you arrive at Katmai you check in to the ranger station first and go through a bear training. The rangers advise that bears often walk the people trails out of convenience. All you can do is group up and step off the trail to let it pass.
