  • How to row if you are overweight and rowing to lose-weight or stay in shape. First off - I am considered "obese" so I don't mean this offensively. I have a belly, but there are certain things we can do, to make it so we are rowing well, without hurting ourselves, and keep going on this machine.
    Rowing can be a great tool for weightloss, but there are some things we can adapt for our bodies so that we don't cause injuries in the process.

    Thank you so much for this. I have a belly and I want to start rowing. But all the videos I have seen are with people who do not have a belly. So I am really grateful for the words of encouragement and instruction. I am now officially sold on rowing.

    Good advice. I have that same machine and I love it. It seems I end up slightly to the right on the seat, maybe 1/2 inch and the chain looks like it's coming back at an angle. Maybe one of my legs is longer than the other.

    Thank you so so much for this. I do have a belly, but my legs are more or less normal. But it’s really helpful to know that you can still get a work out even if you don’t go all the way forward or all the way back.

    Great tutorial. I'm a former power lifter that gained weight. 45 yrs old, 5'8" and 320 lbs...I bought a Concept rowerg and after a week I'm already down 10 lbs I row every day...I have an iWatch and Apple fitness app and I do the rowing classes on the iPad...I love rowing, but I have to spread my legs open to make room for my big ass belly! You are right, never get discouraged find what works for you the goal is to keep moving! Again great video and presentation thank you.

      @@TheRowingDoc I'm down more weight, currently at 299lbs and I added biking into my cardio routine. So I got the Rowerg and a Schwinn AC bike, and adjustable dumbells. Every day I either row or bike for 30 mins and then I do a 20 min dumbbell workout which varies, that's been working out pretty well. I take a day off every 4 or 5 days to rest. Thank you for the response and for opening the world of rowing to all of us.

    Thank you for this video! I was so worried about doing it "wrong" that I was so worried throughout my rowing that I stopped wanting to row at all. It got stressful watching all the videos saying "don't let your heels come up," "keep a straight back throughout," "make sure your shins are straight at the catch." That may be all the correct form, but I just don't have that kind of strength or mobility. I've been a couch potato nearly my whole life so I can't get a perfect straight back because I've got hunched shoulders and a rounded back. I can't get straight shins because my ankles don't have that flexibility. I appreciate you showing us how for those that a shorter, less flexible, and have bellies.

      Thanks so much for the comment! Congrats on getting back on the rower and definitely don't let all these things to focus on stop you. I like to say start with focusing on one or two things that you can focus on, more like the hip hinge for instance, and it will all come with time, but it can definitely be paralyzing if we try to do too much at once and some of it is really difficult because of our bodies. You got this and happy rowing!

    Thank you. You are about my height and I have quite a bit bigger belly (hoping to change that). In the past I have had ankle issues as well on the rower. I have had my Concept 2 about 10 years and used it intermittently over that time. I hope to get more consistent with it.

      I hurt my ankle on the rower as well, I owe it to poor technique and "overdoing" it. I was healed up after a salt cave visit and taking a couple days off the rower, when I switched to the bike to keep things going. Feeling great now after a week's time.

    So would you say to widen you legs, to allow you belly in, or keep your legs tight together, and just stop when belly meets thigh. If that makes sense.

    • @TheRowingDoc
      @TheRowingDoc  4 года назад +3

      Hey. Great question. So I would stop when belly meets thigh, as otherwise you will be putting more stress on outside of foot and leg when you bring your legs wide.

    Hi, I'm 60 and 315. I love the idea of rowing. My issue is arthritis in my knees. Its severe and my left doesn't been nearly as much as the right. For instance, I have to use the 2 foot method going up and down stairs like a little kid. If I step down with my left foot, my right knee is extremely painful. I also have the belly issue.
    Can you keep your feet on the floor and still slide the seat and have the pull for your shoulders and arms? I have rowing envy!
    P.S. it sits low. Hopefully if you say this is doable the staff at PF won't mind giving a lady a bit of help back up🙂

    • @TheRowingDoc
      @TheRowingDoc  3 года назад +1

      Hey Kim. So sorry to hear about the knee but glad you found rowing. Yes, you can absolutely try putting your feet on the floor. I also have a video on here about knees and rowing which might help as well. I am sure you will be ok. I also have a video on rowing with a TKA (Total knee replacement), and I mention some ways to get up that might help as well. But please share what ends up working for you as I'd love to help share with others who might be uncertain as well.

    I used to be in great shape and loved rowing. Now I'm back up to 350 lbs and due to the problems I'm having with my feet I really want to get a row machine for cardio but I'm having trouble finding a machine that will support my weight for a cheaper price. I simply don't have the money for a Concept 2, I need something in the $300-$400 range and it's just really hard to find a list of machines that will support my weight no matter what the price tag. Any suggestions?

    • @TheRowingDoc
      @TheRowingDoc  4 года назад

      hey Sean. So sorry I didn't see this notification. I don't really have a list, but the biggest thing is finding on that matches what you are looking for size wise and that is comfortable. Second is that it has a pace per 500 m on the screen, that would be ideal so you can see progress. If you come up with a few options and want to send me the link I can take a look!

      The price point will be the challenge if you're trying to stay in the $300 - $400 range. I'm about the same weight and just bought a hydrow, which is rated to 375 lbs. It's a $2100 machines with a $38 monthly subscription, but they have good financing options to break this into managable payments.

    • @TheRowingDoc
      @TheRowingDoc  4 года назад

      @@jeremynosek4185 I like how you jumped from 300-400 straight to one of the most expensive machines. There are quite a few in the middle and even lower ranges that someone can use. There are so many options out there! But glad you are enjoying the hydrow! :)

    • @jeremynosek4185
      @jeremynosek4185 4 года назад

      @@TheRowingDoc Would love to hear what options you are aware of for someone >= 350 lbs. Agree the Hydrow is a bit expensive. Like Sean, I was looking for something cheaper but really struggled to find any machine with a weight capacity above 300 lbs. (with most at 250 lbs.). At/above 350 lbs. the Hydrow was the only option I could find. However, I'm not disappointed with it. It's more than I wanted to spend, but love the experience of the instructor on screen and leaderboard concept.

    • @TheRowingDoc
      @TheRowingDoc  4 года назад

      @@jeremynosek4185 Honestly I know they exist but would need to do some research like I mentioned before. There are just so many machines out there that I would need to spend some time looking. So I will add this to my list of things to look for and try and put a list together with machines at different price ranges. I will also reach out to someone i know who has a rower and is a little larger so I will keep you posted. Sorry I don't know any off the top of my head. Its great to know that the hydro supports 350+. Thanks for sharing that!

    I just started rowing and I noticed that my heels come up a LOT when I am in the catch. I am going to work on just doing 3/4th row drills for now but what can I do off the machine to allow my to one day keep my heels down further down in the catch?

    • @TheRowingDoc
      @TheRowingDoc  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Rusty. Thanks for commenting and great question. Start with seeing if the foot plate is in a good spot, as just changing that can sometimes help. So try moving it up and see how it feels and try moving it down and see how it feels. Then if the issue is because of ankle mobility, check out this video with something that might help, the exercise at the beginning is the one for ankle. ruclips.net/video/vwdoS7B_rSc/видео.html
