    I love that you can still adjust the saturation in HDR mode. Just about every monitor I’ve tried, disables that when I enable HDR. Hopefully this is the same for the neo Odessey G8. Mine comes tomorrow.

    Amazing video! I loved how in depth you went on every setting. Did I miss the part where you talk about local dimming? I’m coming from a monitor that doesn’t have this feature and would love to know how to set it up for gaming and general use. Thanks and keep up the great work.

      This menu system video doesn't really cover local dimming in depth, but it's covered in the review - pcmonitors.info/reviews/samsung-odyssey-neo-g7-s32bg75/#Local_Dimming_SDR (and for the video review - ruclips.net/video/MT4t4-UHgcE/видео.html).

      @@PCMonitors I see thanks a lot for your asnwer. Another thing I noticed is that, like you in the video, I don't have the option to select 165hz inside Nvidia control panel, no matter the resolution. I tried with 2 different DP cables. And, as you showed in the video, even tho in the OSD it says 165hz when I go into information it says 3840x2160 120hz. Any idea what's preventing 165hz to show up in the nvidia panel? I'm using a 1080ti graphic card with latest drivers.

    • @PCMonitors
      @PCMonitors  Год назад +2

      165Hz was listed in Nvidia Control Panel for me via DP (as it should be) - pcmonitors.info/reviews/samsung-odyssey-neo-g7-s32bg75/#Features_and_aesthetics, at the native UHD resolution and QHD. The 1080 Ti doesn't support DP DSC, so it's limited to 120Hz max at the native resolution.

    This is a really great video, I have to somewhat disagree with you on one aspect. Might just be nit-picking. Contrast enhancer in HDR brights up crushed black levels in HDR, seems to do the opposite in SDR. I noticed it pretty much the first day I owned the monitor running HDR test patterns on youtube blacks were crushed without Contrast Enhancer turned on in HDR. Also, overall peak brightness seems to be significantly worse in HDR without it in HDR and worse in SDR. It seems to me it's an HDR feature only. Could be wrong i'm a bit of a novice, but HDR black level tests seems to indicate otherwise.

    • @PCMonitors
      @PCMonitors  Год назад

      Glad you like the video. I should have clarified it behaved differently under HDR and mentioned its effects, but forgot to do so in the video - so thanks for bringing this up. :)
      Whether the effect is considered positive could be dependent on the monitor firmware and how the monitor is tuned, perhaps. But it didn't have any objectively positive effects on the unit I tested. It could be that you subjectively prefer how it looks due to the gamma changes it makes, but it doesn't enhance contrast as it has no positive effect on white point or black point. You're correct that it reacts differently under HDR, but its effect when I tested it was to overbrighten darker (and some medium-dark) shades under HDR. This revealed unintended detail - a look may be preferred subjectively by some even if it goes against accurate reproduction. Because it brightens up some shades, it could also prevent strong dark-biasing in some areas simply because the average shade value is lighter rather than darker. Which again could be subjectively preferred - worth a mention and something people should experiment with for sure.

    • @PCMonitors
      @PCMonitors  Год назад

      Somebody posted that they had to activate 'Contrast Enhancer' on their unit under HDR or things looked highly washed out. That certainly isn't the intended look and isn't how our unit appeared without the setting enabled. If they could re-post it would be appreciated, comment was deleted accidentally.

    So I was trying to find out what *exactly* the "VRR control" option actually does and this video came up. And yeah, my impression so far is pretty much the same - nobody seems to actually know what it does ;) I was wondering if it has something to do with maybe DSC or MPO on my monitor (G70B), but that doesn't seem to be the case either (the monitor seems to have DSC enabled and MPO disabled at all times in Game mode, regardless of the VRR Control setting).

    I don't know if you'll reply or not... I hope you will.
    So this monitor looks bright on SDR but when I switch to HDR on PS5, monitor dims down the brightness a little.
    Thanks for mentioning about Black Level RGB range. I had no clue about it. I had Black Level on Low with RGB Automatic on PS5, now with your recommendation, I switch Black Level to Normal and RGB to full on PS5.
    Now white looks white and not gray after I switch with your recommended setting.
    I just don't get how SDR is slightly brighter and HDR. But I do notice blown out highlights on SDR. But as soon as I switch to HDR, highlights are not blown out but the brightness dims about 10%.
    Am I doing something wrong or it's all just in my head?
    Hope you'll answer. Thanks for the tips. I appreciate you. I subbed and liked. I have to! Thank you! 🙏🏼

    • @PCMonitors

      Glad you appreciate the content!
      SDR can get very bright on this monitor if you use the 'Local Dimming' setting ('High' or potentially 'Auto') with a high brightness level in the OSD. HDR brightness will be heavily dictated by the content itself, but it shouldn't be obviously dull or dim for brighter content (compared to the same content under SDR) if you've got 'Local Dimming' set to 'High' and have the brightness set to the default level of '100'. HDR on this monitor is designed to be viewed with the monitor set to '100' brightness, by the way, as reducing this does not neatly map everything correctly to reduced brightness levels and instead tends to provide a dull and flooded image - especially with extreme adjustment. The brightness control is usually locked off on monitors under HDR for this reason, it doesn't react as it does under SDR.

      I don't use the PS5, I'm a PC user so I can't help with you that I'm afraid. Maybe somebody else can chime in. You certainly shouldn't reduce brightness under HDR on the monitor though as per my reply above. It seems the PS5 HDR calibration process could be a bit misleading and may be unnecessarily hampering brightness. From an article by Slashgear on the topic: "On the first of the two screens, you'll want to press the D-Pad up until the gray sun becomes entirely invisible, contrary to Sony's on-screen directions. As long as your TV is certified for HDR10 at a minimum, you should be fine to push the D-Pad up until you reach a wall and can't increase your max brightness any further." So you should just push the brightness all the way up for the first few sliders by the sound of it.

    I wish you could move around the screen size setting like you can on the ASUS PG42UQ, but I guess on a 32" its not as necessary as a 42". You can correct me if I'm wrong, but from my research there doesn't appear to be any 16:9 ~32" high refresh rate OLED panels in the works currently, AU Optronics is pushing their mini LED technology now instead of their JOLED's they showed off last year... so I've decided to get the Neo G7 this Black Friday. • @elviscera4661
    @elviscera4661 Год назад

    One persistent problem I have had with the Neo G8 is that it won't allow booting in HDMI 2.0. You either have to boot in HDMI 1.4 and then switch to HDMI 2.0 or (oddly) open the OSD and then reboot. I have seen this annoying quirk mentioned elsewhere. Happens with all cables, many graphics card and systems. The OSD is not that easy to get to (like if you have a soundbar).

    • @PCMonitors
      @PCMonitors  Год назад

      That sounds frustrating. I didn't have any particular issues on our Neo G7 unit using the "HDMI 2.0⬆" setting, although mainly tested using DP as noted in the review.

    • @elviscera4661
      @elviscera4661 Год назад +1

      @@PCMonitors Correct, the "HDMI 2.0⬆" setting causes the problem. If the connection is to be established through an HDMI port, then if the "HDMI 2.0⬆" is set, an HDMI connection is not established and there is no display whatever (can tell by post codes that box is in setup etc.). I tried different cables, different systems, different graphics like 1660 Super, 3080Ti or 4090). If it is set to HDMI 1.4, a connection is established and it will be possible via OSD to later switch to "HDMI 2.0⬆". The truly *weird* thing is that if the OSD is brought up first, and then system is powered on, an "HDMI 2.0⬆" setting will be established. I surmise that something in the monitor firmware behaves slightly different when OSD is enabled.
      I discovered this by attaching two systems to the monitor. The DP connection seems to work in all cases but monitor only has one DP input so I had to use HDMI for second. My spouse has long finger nails and has difficulty using OSD and wants nothing to do with the problem. Consequently, I have obtained spousal approval for some other monitor that has the same feature set as the Neo G8 but not sure what that should be. I can still return the Neo G8. :)

      Dynamic Contrast controls the backlight as a single unit and is heavily compromised. But if you want to use 'Dynamic Contrast' you need to disable local dimming and the monitor must be running in SDR. If in doubt perform a factory reset of the monitor.
