I have a Samsung (not this model) and I am not buying one again. The ghosting with VRR enabled makes it almost unusable. I made sure to get an MSI as my second screen and the Samsung is now only used when I work and need 2 screens. For gaming I only use the MSI.
I bought one, two actually but here is my experience. Awesome monitor, but first unit came with three dead pixels right in the middle of the screen, the core lighting was dim and the monitor would not save my personalized brightness, black equalizer or core lighting color. Every time the monitor turned off, it would reset back to factory default settings. So I returned it to Amazon and ordered another one while it was on sale for 1200. Second unit was much better, one dead pixel in the upper right area of the monitor where the X is for your close windows button but otherwise no defects and the core lighting is bright like it should be. The monitor saves the settings after power down and I have had no other issues. Scan lines are a thing with both units but I don't find it noticeable from my viewing, seating position. Bottom line. QC as mentioned in this video is total garbage. If you buy this monitor from any vendor, amazon, best buy, frys etc you WILL be rolling the dice. That said, for 4k and 32in, there is no better display. This VA panel is MUCH better than the 27in 4k Ultragear IPS it replaced. The colors and image quality are the best on the market right now. You just need to be willing to roll the dice and accept you might need to return one or two. Cheers gents.
I've bought my G7 and G8 directly from Samsung. The G7 ended up having a couple of dead pixels like a month after warranty ended but they were nice enough to just replace it anyway. Let's see what happens with the G8 lol
It’s nice that you mentioned its better than the IPS it replaced. I’m also going to replace my LG Ultrafine 32” 4k monitor with this one and my main worry was that if colour accuracy and image quality being worse than IPS, especially when it’s hooked to my MacBook. I’m normally extremely happy with my LG display, but looking for one monitor solution to my Mac + PC+ PS5 combination. Looking forward to test it myself. Thanks mate
@@El_Deen G8 so far so good no dead pixels. Love the 32" in 4k absolutely amazing cos of it's pixel density of 138 PPI compared to the G7 32" 1440p with 92 PPI. I'm running a RTX 4090 so is running my game pretty well at maxed out settings even with DLSS off.
Why would Best Buy be rolling the dice. They take anything back so long as it’s in the return window. Plus they sell extended warranties that cover things like dead pixels etc.
I could never drop a serious amount of cash on any Samsung monitor. There is ALWAYS issues no matter what model it is it seems, which is a shame because the specs "should" blow any IPS monitor out of the water.
Honestly, replace "Samsung Monitor" with "Any monitor". The monitor market just needs to change and QD OLED can't come soon enough [Edit: or MicroLED for that matter]
@@Zenheizer Yeah true, there's no perfect monitor, and a lot of people will fine every monitor model to have some annoying issue to put you off. We just have to deal with some shit right now. I have an M27Q currently and it annoys me that it had a couple dead pixels, I bought a shitty $200 monitor back in 2015 and it had none, but my pricey $750 Acer and mid-range $450 Gigabyte monitors have dead pixels
Thank you Tim and Hardware Unboxed for giving us in depth technical monitor reviews. This is what we need, not a sponsored "techtuber" praising the advertised specs without doing ANY real tests of their own.
@@viduani thats kinda the issue with the Short circuits, they are not reviews, as in an actual investigation into the product specs and how they actually match up but is just general impressions on a product so the testing is limited and I feel that a lot of people can mistaken it for a full review and doesn't seem to be the best option for general consumers.
Looking at how closely the Neo G7 and Neo G8 perform, perhaps they are essentially the same monitor, just binned for the higher refresh rate? Hence, the variance in other performance factors might just be down to whether you get lucky with the unit you get.
@@Ryuuken24 I don't know anybody who actually has backlight strobing/back frame insertion enabled, so to me that's one of the top gimmick features. I've tried it multiple times with different monitors, and frame crosstalk is inevitable when the best LCD monitors have 4ms+ response times. 1 frame @ 240 Hz is ~4.2 ms, you'd need half of that *in all transitions* to avoid frame crosstalk whatsoever - this is not the case in any LCD. Only OLED displays can do proper BFI that actually improves picture quality under all circumstances. Saying that high refresh looks like shit just because it doesn't support BFI is, to say the least, absurd.
@@iagobkstar It's not something any simpleton would get with a simple explanation. You have to see it side by side to a shitty high Hz display to get why BFI with high Hz is a better solution. Most people can't afford these displays, which is why the feature isn't a gimmick, you can't afford it. I recommend the MAG274QRF-QD.
@@Ryuuken24 before insulting somebody you don't know, you need to assume they know more than you. Learn some humility. In any case, I have a 170Hz display with BFI, and I've also seen the MSI monitor you talk about in person with BFI on. BFI looks like arse and after a while with it on, it gives me a headache. PS: Have a good day.
I don't understand why Samsung is producing trash, 2 years in. I had the original G9, amazing monitor but the scanline issue made me return it after 1 year, going to 120Hz from 240Hz also didn't fix it.
I got this monitor for 1299 and it kicks ass! Have not noticed any issues with my panel. Looks absolutely gorgeous! Future proofed and ready upgrade my GPU.
It probably has issues, but they are pretty minor to the average gamer, and easily ignored. No one else offers then benefits of these Samsung displays currently.. they are the worst “best gaming screen ever” which these reviews don’t really highlight.
I'm thinking of getting this since I could possibly get it for 1000€ per monitor tho I would be buying 2 of them for my dual monitor setup. Also Thinking in same line as to this monitor being really good for many years to come since my current MSI Optix monitors are starting to show their age and honestly don't know how long until there will be some major issues.
I must've really lucked out with my unit. I'm extremely confident that I see no scanlines whatsoever and am definitely free from any discoloration or dead pixels. I made my purchase at my local microcenter where their warranty/return policy is fantastic so I was ready to return it if I encountered one of these issues. I'd recommend the monitor if anyone else has that kind of luxury for local return/rma, avoid buying it online. It really is a fantastic monitor if you get lucky.
The whole scanline issue is overrated anyway. There is a reason most scanline shots are taken up close (or zoomed in). And even if it was terrible, the monitor @120hz is still better than any 4k non oled in that pricerange and you get the option to use 240hz with scanlines if you desire.
Did you look closely on your monitor @ 240Hz? The scan lines is only visible to me on my G8 if I get really close to the screen... like 4-8 inches or so. Not visible at all @120Hz. Mine has 2 defects though--a pixel size dirt on the top right corner of the screen and a 2 inches scratch at the bottom left side of the bezel. Don't feel like RMA'ng just 'coz of these. Overall the screen looks fantastic! 🥺
Hi Guys how is playing games overall on this? something like warzone. And what about content consumption? I have a 27inch(asus vg27aql1a) 2k 170hz and 27inch 4k 144hz(acer xb273k). I am thinking of buying a 4090 and replacing both these with just the g8.
@@aditya7955 I had a good time with the G8, but I just exchanged it for Asus 1440p 360hz and have to say it is the better option at a better price as well.
@@353darkesthour I find 1440p to be slighlty pixelated hence 4k. how is the g8 for non gaming tasks? Like reading or where a lot of text is involved. saw some amazon review saying the display is blurry and all due to the coating
When I had a dead pixel on my G7 (non-neo) back in 2020, I had an absolute nightmare with Samsung support where the representative said that the warranty does not cover screen issues. Yeah... I couldn't believe it either that a monitor warranty doesn't cover the screen. About 3 days of fighting on the phone got me an RMA that took 2 weeks though.
It's killing me (well not really my 1440p 32" is perfectly functional still) waiting for a decent 32" oled monitor. 42 is just way too big for my desk and I can't wall mount because no walls (my "office" is in an unfinished basement). I just don't want to spend near $1000 to get anything less than a huge upgrade. Especially since it'll require a stronger GPU (although that's definitely coming in sept/oct).
@@xXDc14Xx , TV's are not ideal as monitors. They are getting closer but they have their own issues related to this. @@joshuareveles Its "the first" offering but isnt without some weaknesses that could be ironed out by other Manufacturers. The competition is just begining.
Thanks so very much for doing both the new Neo monitor reviews! It helps me so much as I was about to buy the Neo G8 but glad I waited to see a review from you.
Came to watch this after I bought this for $400 from the deal on Samsung's site. If I get lucky with QC issues (or lack thereof), then I think it's 100% worth it
16:55 Wasn't the original theory behind Samsung's 240hz a compromise of contrast ratio in favor of better pixel response times? If the theory is true, then Samsung doesn't need to drive the 165hz Neo G7 pixels as fast and as a result get a higher contrast ratio. While the Neo g8 needs to compromise on contrast to achieve fast 240hz performance.
1800R is the curve they should be using if they want a curved display. Its subtle and makes a difference and doesn't cause distortion. Otherwise, for this size monitor, flat is the other option. When you mentioned in the video the FALD backlight array was "46 x 26 grid", that would be a great ROW to have in your table @18:16 for the TV specs so viewers don't have to scan through the video to see if you mentioned it.
Just wanted to thank you guys for your reviews. More than a year ago I bought my first 144hz monitor based on your video and it serves me perfectly with no issues to this day. I'll definitely use your reviews before upgrading to a 1440p 240hz display in years to come (:
I personally don't care about gamma or rec2020 values but for some people it's important. I'd like to know though how the monitor performs regarding overshoot in different refresh rates. I highly appreciate this content for it's thorough scrutiny.
I hope we see more monitors with good local dimming. Or OLEDs. Main reason HDR is not mainstream yet is that the screens to use it are either TVs and/or stupid expensive.
Good review as always, very thorough. I have a new Samsung G8 ( for about a week now, got it when it went on sale for $1299, I'm in USA). After, your review went and checked again to make sure I wasn't crazy but I do not have any banding. I think Samsung quality control is all over the place. I have an older 32inch 1440p G7 with no issues as well, but that was after two FW updates. I do love this Samsung G8, I would just advise people to get it from somewhere they can exchange easily if they don't like it.
Happy G7 owner, mine does have banding. It’s annoying, it’s also still the best gaming monitor I’ve ever owned and I’m happy with it. The banding only shows up under specific color Scenarios. I see it once or twice a week, I know it’s a defect and not broken or going out, it’s easy to ignore
once again I thank your team for the work. please never stop. In many other sponsored reviews, such as that of Linus Tech, as always, the problems are not addressed and that cannot be surpassed in terms of dubiousness. Thank you for everything.
Yeah they can't really use the fact it's a short circuit video as an excuse either, especially when they're starting a whole new sector of their business to actually test and verify manufacturer claims.
An update on this review, got a neo g8 very recently and it has no issues. It seems people who bought the more recent versions have no issues. It is a much better monitor than any OLED if you want to do productivity work on it. It has fantastic reflection handling and no risk of burn-in
Congrats. Few questions : How's motion handling in 240hz any ghosting? is it 10bit color at 240hz? Any scanlines now? And whats the manufacturing date of your unit ? Maybe on their newer batches they fixed the scanline issue ✌️
I recently (4 months ago) purchased my odyssey g8 from microcenter new out of the box, and have not experienced any scanline issues or qc problems with the display pertaining to dead pixels or weirdly colored spots so far. There was either an update or the model reviewed in this video was a bit of a lemon. Only time will tell if these problems pop up eventually though
Purchased one of these from Micro Center a couple of days ago and it has multiple areas of dead pixels and a similar "burn mark" in another area in the top right. Hate the curve and the scan lines issue as well. Taking it straight back for a refund. First and last time I attempt to buy a Samsung monitor.
I got mine from microcenter as well and after 4 units I think I've finally have one without dead pixels and a burn mark, which is the fald zone burntout in that area, all 4 have the scanlines on certain colors though and that super disappointing. The manager did help me out the 4th go around and allowed me to check the monitor in store to make sure it was good to save me another trip back and knocked the price down to 1199 for me, so I guess that's a little win 😆
New Information you might be interested in: On AMD cards the custom resolution option is NOT LOCKED in CRU. You might be able to set a custom resolution at around 180-200Hz to get rid/reduce scanlines.
Wow, I honestly haven't been here for awhile and I was blown away by this outstanding review! It's so good to see Tim really hitting his stride with these monitor reviews, simply the best there is on all of YT! How this channel isn't above 1 million viewers is criminal IMHO.
Honestly. I looked for reviews on this and all of them I could find were literally just repeating the spec sheet and saying how pretty the display was. How anyone can unironically quote the '1 millisecond response time' in a review without doing any real testing is ridiculous.
alot of the new monitors everyone complains of defects most happen during shipping and handling, any brand now they are all JUST OEM from 2 panel makers in taiwan, no matter what brand you buy the pannels only come from 2 places. then each brand just adds thier own frame and OSD software to them
I will definitely watch that LG C2 42'' review as on paper it looks like best large screen monitor option right now (despite the panel is the same as last year's C1's according to Vincent from HDTV test). Basically I'm waiting for the prices to drop a bit in my country. I was planing to buy G9 last summer, but just in time I watched real review by HUB and avoided colossal mistake.
I just can't imagine OLED not burning in when using as a PC screen. How do you plan to mitigate that? Or are you just planning to buy a new one in a couple of years?
I'd wait for QDOLED to make it's way into smaller screens before going with OLED. The Sony approach (quantum dots, moderate brightness, and a huge heatsink) seems to have basically cured short term image retention, so with any luck should also fix long term burn in as well.
I got the c2 42 and I find it to be the perfect purchase specially after watching this video. I was worried about sustained brightness but it’s not a problem even in my setup where I ha a big window right next to the panel
@@madcrowmaxwell QDOLED right now have some issues with monitor use because sub-pixels are spaced as a triangle so text clarity is bad. That is for all companies because Samsung is the only QDOLED panel manufacturer.
Yeah I really love how honest they are in reviewing everything and not giving a pass on any problem. Expensive equipment should be hold to the highest standard and way too many channels are just shilling the shit out of the latest release.
exactly, you got the new firmware update and you have ZERO issues. Hardware is literally spreading false propoganda because he got a bad model with a yellow spot and issues. THere have been updates and revisions and he still badmouths the monitor
how can they still have shitty QC? they ruin their good monitors with it... they really could have changed the monitor market with their last few top end monitors and they could have be the first to introduce a new gen of monitors... wel they did but everyone hates them. besides the specs on paper the monitors are bad which surprises me cuz samsung makes the best mobile displays and they are strong in the TV market as well. when they don't change their QC issues for their next monitors i think they'll die before they could really come into the market which is a shame...
Thank you so much for this amazing detailed review. Scanlines is due to the 1000 curve I think as they have done a lot of firmware updates to the previous g7 and it did not disappear as many confirms, this issue is really troublesome more qc would have made this new product perfect, but it is impossible to combine a VA 240 monitor with a 1000r curve and to be honest nothing is wrong in making a Flat g8 neo
Yeah, though I would also be okay with a 1800R panel curve as well, as that is so little that it will not interfere with my everyday office work but also give a slight immersion boost, when gaming firstperson viewed games.
They probably have to make it an IPS or OLED monitor at that point. Flat VA at 32" looks pretty bad because of colour-shift towards the edges, it's not a good panel type for anything above 27" or even 24".
@@paul2609 Not always the case, some VA actually have a decent enough viewing angle that you will not notice any colour shift unless viewing it off angle (Q90A TV is one of those examples)
@@paul2609 You do have a point, I forgot to mention in my firmer reply. Since VA panels do have a more narrow contrast angle, you probably would sacrifice some image quality with a totally flat panel. So a little curve is beneficial in all cases...when we talk va panels for monitor use. And the issue gets more noticeable the larger the panel is. So again, Samsung please give us 1800R va panels!!
Only 60Hz, but i'm still rocking a bright, flawless LG 34" with 10 bit colour from 2010, with daily use. Buy quality, buy once. If I could get the same monitor in 120Hz, with adaptive framerate tech, idd be gold.
I would be fine with 200Hz to get rid off the scanlines but why is this a stupid curved monitor? Samsung, please stop producing only stupid curved monitors! We want flat versions! I hate curved and think curved is extremly stupid on a 16:9 monitor. For a good curved experience you need 21:9 or higher with 1800R. 1000R is way to aggressiv even on an ultrawide. And where are the premium feature like a KVM switch? I mean, this thing costs 1500$/€ and don't have a KVM switch? I can't believe how Samsung can make a monitor, in this pricerange, without an KVM switch.
Flat VA 32" looks bad, they had to do curve or you'll get colour shifts towards the edges. I know some people went from a flat VA 32" to an IPS 27" / 32" because of that.
@@paul2609 it's not a problem from normal viewing distance if it was you couldn't shift your head by a few cm without it being total crap and the curve would amplify that
I don't think the KVM is a large issue, I've rarely seen it used and if you spend so much money, you probably have more than one screen and enough money for an external KVM switch

Got this monitor for £999 a few days ago from Amazon UK. I've done a lot of tweaking, A LOT. The scanlines are present at other refresh rates. If you have it set to 120hz and turn VRR on, Scanlines. Overclock to 130hz at 4k, scanlines. Overclock to 165hz at 1440p, scanlines. Have it set to any resolution and any framerate under 240hz and change the screen size in the monitor settings, scanlines. It's interesting to see that the scanlines are absolutely NOT tied to refresh rate. You're also locked out of custom resolutions/overclocked hz when 240hz is set on in the monitor or adaptive sync is turned off. Haven't figured out what the actual issue is but Samsung support told me to get a replacement but... I might just get a refund. After 5-6 hours use, the screen will begin to flicker and I have to turn it off for a while. Which is just an absolute NO. The screen also doesn't play nicely in multi monitor setups if 240hz and adaptive sync is enabled. Causing the screen to seemingly randomly lose signal and not be able to easily refind it, usually when a fullscreen application (game) is running. It's a nightmare, plus my panel has the WORST grey uniformity I've ever seen, it's so bad that looking up at the sky in a game, the sea or a grassy field has patches of different brightness, almost looks like dark smudges on the screen. It's really bad. It's truly a shame because I actually like the monitor, it's actual raw performance with response time across all refresh rates is absolutely perfect for me. I'm conflicted but I know for this price, I cannot put up with these issues :(
At this point just wait out another one to two years for a true 4k 240hz on display port 2.0, with either qd-oled or quick va/ips panel with more than 2k-2.5k zones.
It'll be less than a year. The panel technology already exists (See the review your watching.) As soon as RDNA3 and the RTX 4000 series launch, you'll see display port 2.0 monitors.

Kyle and Linus almost came when they “reviewed” this monitor but I was waiting for this one. Had G7 for 2 days but scanlines were just awful. Returned the monitor and bought gigabyte m32q. Best monitor ever
ShortCircuit doesn't do reviews, they did a sponsored showcase, so take that for what it's worth. I mean it's correct that it looks great on the first look.
You really do some of the best, and most thorough testing of monitors on RUclips. You really make it easy to understand what quality looks like, making a concise summary of your feelings towards these monitors. From the off I could tell you were disappointed in this monitor, and it's good to make this clear, it's poor value, explained by such things as even it's noticeable yellow marking.
He was also disappointed in the original G7, I had watched his review and bought one anyway. Scan lines are an annoyance, still the best monitor I’ve ever owned and would do it again. Being over critical may cause many who would be quite happy to miss out, a shame.

@@26DeislerFCB The C2 was released in mid to late March 2022. So it has not even been out for 6 months. And if they getting burn in on those then they are doing something wrong. And name a single monitor that does not have dead pixels? As that is just the luck of the draw with every monitor.
I get it, Oled has some flaws but in my honest opinion, Burn-In isn't one of them. You just gotta use your brain how to prevent it, and because 99% of people who use an Oled TV as a desktop are on Windows anyway, it's really easy to tweak the OS to prevent Burn-In to a great extent. 1. Use a cycling background, which changes every 5-10min or so, and with atleast 4 different wallpapers. 2. Use the Autohide mousecursor, which fades out your cursor when not in use after 5-120 seconds, and instantly shows it again when you use your mouse. 3. Autohide your taskbar in the windows options after a few seconds. 4. Tweak the taskbar so it hides completly without some pixels showing 5. Set the montior to go to sleep after 30min or so of inactivity. Now you don't have any burnin. At least I don't on my LG C1 which I use alot since like 3 years
You guys still don't understand curved monitors... In a perfect world the monitors curve would be equal to your viewing distance so the pixel density is the same across your vision. Otherwise pixels further from the center are further away from your eyes, which is terrible.

I LOVE how this is in stark contrast from Kyle's comparison of this VA to an IPS monitor, saying how much better the Samsung is because if better black level. Dude spent half a video talking about how you can see enemies in dark games/scenes on the VA panel, because of how good its dark levels are... Edit: My god, how has every single person in the replies missed the point of the comment... I'm not talking about the contrast of the monitor, at all. I'm commenting on how biased and bad of a review Kyle from BitWit did, honing on how incredible the G8 is because of its great contrast. Of course a VA is going to have better dark levels when compared to an IPS. But that is no reason to pay 1.500€ or dollars for a VA monitor...
Well, Kyle is one of those Techtubers that do not really review monitors, but simply do impressions on them and go through a bunch of talking points - typical influencer stuff. I still like his videos, but you gotta take them for what they are. HBU on the other hand is a serious review outlet you can actually rely on for technical information.
No, he meant there is no black crush, you're not suppose to lose detail in dark scenes in HDR. In SDR you can get black crush if you don't adjust black level equalizer. Kyle still stand correct.
the curvature changes constantly . I have a 2020 or 2019 model curved 1080p 32" display 1500 R and claims its the best size for immersion?!? but only 1800R was the other option at the time . I have a question related to R ratings . I assume its not silly but what is it based on or what does it necessarily mean . is 1000 R more or less curved than an 1800 R ? it was a returned unit with "scratches" on the corner. the plastic wrap to protect it hadn't been taken off and the glue was peeling slightly on the corner . 200 dollar discount for 200 plus tax CAD/AUD.
Pretty sure the 'R' is for radius. So a 1800r monitor, if you extrapolate the curve will create a 1.8m circle. 1000r would create a 1m circle. So the lower the number the stronger the curvature. 1000r is supposed to match the retina of your eye.
That 1000R is a huge issue for many of us. I currently use a 16:9, 34" flat screen. My eye distance from the screen is just over 30". I have no problem with it at all. I would be open to purchasing a curved screen of similar dimensions but only if the Radius is opened up significantly to something like 1800R or 2300R or something in between. Just a mild curve is all it would take to get the improvement. Well Done Tim. Thank You for your efforts.
This is the best monitor on the market today , there is no perfect monitor , but if you don't want an OLED because of burn in risk , double image sample and hold trash , colour banding , stutter , judder , auto dimming , rubbish text and a headache , then just go with the neo g7 or g8 mini led.

@@I.AMWallzy The human eye being curved means all objects you look at have to be curved or on a curvature is among the dumbest arguments I've ever heard. They eye can perceive flat images as well as curved images as they are. Curved displays with aggressive curves are terrible. They distort the images pure and simple. Worst offenders are 16:9 with 1000R that Samsung uses. There are displays with mild curves like the 21:9 ones with 1800R curves. Those are fine. Recently went through two of these. Both had blotchy imperfections behind the screen that were blatantly obvious with bright backgrounds. This was ultimately the reason I returned them. The wobbly stand, horrendous distortion from the curve, and overall poor local dimming performance were just icing on the cake. Returned it and bought an LG C2 42” and man, what a difference. Would love to see LG migrate their OLED television tech over to their PC products.
@@alexanderg1935 Why shouldn't it be? As long as you've got an hdmi 2.1 capable gfx card powerful enough to drive your games at 4k 120Hz I'd say you're good.
a 1000R curve is a 1000R curve, it doesn't matter how big or wide the monitor is. it literally has the same effect in terms of distoring the view, which it actually does less so than a flat panel as long as you are within the radius of the curve.
Samsungs scanlines issue has existed for a long time. I remember owning a Korean Ultrawide by a company called Crossover (M340CLZ) back in 2016. The scanlines would happen all the time with darker solid colors and with very fine detail.
Add 165Hz> and proper sRGB clamp and no restrictions in sRGB mode. Samsung already gets close but it's missing DP 2.0 and has to rely on old 1.4 with DSC and has constant QC issues. As for G-.Sync - no thank you. Not the same old hardware module that needs active cooling and has only HDMI 2.0 ports.
It's great that guys like you exist in the benchmark community. Lots of reviews don't focus that much on the defects/drawbacks and while this may not be as important on average screens, here we are speaking of a 1500$ monitor. It's supposed to be a flagship, it creates expectations and some benchmarks become misleading if they don't show the defects. It's not necessarily about being a bad product, but again you make plans around that promised performance.
The idea behind the curve is it lets you sit closer to the monitor than normal while keeping the sides within your field of view, to really appreciate the pixel density.
This monitor blows anything Ive used out of the water. Its the worlds first ever 240hz 4k display which 2 years ago we didnt think was possible for years. I traded in my g7 for this at best buy and it was worth every penny which is why every other review channel has a glowing review. This is far and away the best monitor available rn. at least until the unveil a 4k 360hz next year;)
Considering your panel has a burn mark (and thus could be considered at least partially defective), I would be really interested to see if the color reproduction/accuracy improves on a panel without defects.
Late reply, I purchased one of these panels and had the same result unfortunately.... dropping from 240hz to 120hz solved the scan line issues but then whats the point? Returned my panel that same day for a refund.
I might have been lucky, but I've not encountered the scan lines on 2 units I've come across (Amazon brand new and open box best buy). First was firmware 1003.00 and the second was 1002.1 What firmware version was your unit running? I feel like I won the lottery with 2 good units
I’m a 32” G7 (1440p) owner. I hate IPS glow/contrast, (actually prefer TN over IPS). I’ve had the screen a couple years, it’s the best monitor I’ve ever owned for sure. The fast response times, no smearing, and excellent (relative) contrast has been wonderful. I’m ambivalent to the curve, I don’t much notice it honestly, but I’m not a content creator or pro. I do notice scanlines from time to time, and wish they were not there, but enjoy the other aspects of the display so much, I’m willing to live with them, they are far less of a deal breaker for me then poor contrast, IPS glow, or poor colors of a TN. At this point the Samsung VA’s are the only “real” option, they nailed speed and contrast, two of the most important aspects for me, no one else is competitive, regardless of this monitors weakness. I’ve not considered the few OLED options on the market, I’m excited for more OLED choices, or a progression in Samsung va tech.
I was gutted after seeing this review after I had just pre-ordered this monitor. I literally had been waiting for two years for a monitor which ticked my boxes (A high refresh rate 4K monitor which had decent HDR, a good amount of dimming zones etc). I decided to stick with it anyway, and I honestly couldn't be happier. I've tried hard to find any faults and spot scanlines or panel defects, but I may have been one of the lucky ones cause my panel seems to have no issues, and overall, this monitor is ridiculously good when it comes to gaming. Nevertheless thank you Hardware Unboxed for the stellar review and keeping us all informed as always!
@@thethiccdonut5257 I didn't want to buy a monitor now and then upgrade again in a few years so I bit the bullet and went all in now. Only problem is my 3080 just died right in time for Christmas 😂.

I rolled the dice and bought a lightly used for $500 Cad. They guy only had it for only a month using it for productivity. I only play PS5 on this and it looks amazing. No problems thus far. Better than spending $700 extra on an OLED which i was willing to fork out. Love this monitor, get one if you can get a deal but I wouldn't pay full price for it.
on reddit, 2 users are saying by switching to srgb mode, the scanlines issue is almost gone. can you verify that? also is there going to be some limitation by using the srgb mode?
Here ex owner of G7. That monitor has serious display problems. At this point I think any Odyssey monitor have some issue. My had black flickering on left side of the screen. I tried to return monitor 3 times to Samsung and they refused to replace it. After this I will never buy any odyssey monitor ever again.
I've got the G8 and I love it...Nothing bad to say about it so far as far as performance....The stand is a little wobbly, but my table is solid, so it doesn't move if I bump my table a little....
So many flaws and even hard lies from Samsung again, devalue their products even more. Never a Samsung monitor for me now, they deserve all the slack for making products with huge flaws.
They literally all have huge flaws. Horrible game ruining IPS glow? That IPS monitors somehow get a free pass on? Shit TN colors (still better then IPS glow)? Or scan lines and excellent response time, contrast, no glow, great colors.. pick your poison. You’ll go skeletal waiting for perfect.

With every review I tend to see another issue with Samsung's absent QC process.

I have a Samsung (not this model) and I am not buying one again. The ghosting with VRR enabled makes it almost unusable. I made sure to get an MSI as my second screen and the Samsung is now only used when I work and need 2 screens. For gaming I only use the MSI.
This is typical of Samsung, with everything they do.
Seems like a gamble but if you get a good monitor it will be the best 16:9 display on the market.
Three years later my first gen Samsung 1440p curved monitor has a big red line down the middle of it. Super annoying
Thanks mate

Looking at how closely the Neo G7 and Neo G8 perform, perhaps they are essentially the same monitor, just binned for the higher refresh rate? Hence, the variance in other performance factors might just be down to whether you get lucky with the unit you get.
So complete bullshit not worth the hike in price
The G8 looks to be missing backlight strobing, making the high refresh look like dog shit.

Wasn't the original theory behind Samsung's 240hz a compromise of contrast ratio in favor of better pixel response times?

There was either an update or the model reviewed in this video was a bit of a lemon. Only time will tell if these problems pop up eventually though
You have scanlines, they just don't bother you.

@@benjaminoechsli1941 I have ben ón 4k 144hz and I feel I prefer higher hz over res and most of games I play are over 200fps so I prefer somthing like high refresh rate
I'm conflicted but I know for this price, I cannot put up with these issues :(
More OLED monitors please
I went with the Neo G7 partly because this is only designed in white but I guess that worked out for more reasons than one, great review
At this point just wait out another one to two years for a true 4k 240hz on display port 2.0, with either qd-oled or quick va/ips panel with more than 2k-2.5k zones.
That’s what most of us are waiting for, but I’m already planning on a $2,500+ price tag.
It'll be less than a year. The panel technology already exists (See the review your watching.) As soon as RDNA3 and the RTX 4000 series launch, you'll see display port 2.0 monitors.
@@stephenmartin9751 lol of course it exists, these petty mini led monitors that came out are just cash grabs, honestly don't even feel sorry for those that bought the pg32uqx, neo's or the qd-oled. Same issue. Burn mark in the center. Left it on overnight doing a burn in test and it didn’t fade. Sent it back and got the 42 LG instead.
Your reviews of the Neo G7/8 convinced me to go and order the C2 42” which comes on Tuesday. This is why I always come here before making a big purchase. Thank you.
enjoy dead pixels and burn in, just watch some youtube videos of guys with c2 42 6 months after purchase
4. Tweak the taskbar so it hides completly without some pixels showing
5. Set the montior to go to sleep after 30min or so of inactivity.
Now you don't have any burnin. At least I don't on my LG C1 which I use alot since like 3 years

In a perfect world the monitors curve would be equal to your viewing distance so the pixel density is the same across your vision. Otherwise pixels further from the center are further away from your eyes, which is terrible.
Samsung G7 Neo is a way to go for console gaming/4K or +$600 Samsung G9 Neo for the best HDR PC gaming or +$300 Alienware AW3423 for the best HDR PC gaming in dark/horror games/very fast games (like fightings).
It's the opposite for consoles, the G8's has better response time and reduced smearing on 60Hz and 120Hz than the G7 like the video showed.

But that is no reason to pay 1.500€ or dollars for a VA monitor...
that is correct, it is night and day for viewing anything dark. contrast is king.
Aren't HU saying in this review the blacks are good ?
Well, Kyle is one of those Techtubers that do not really review monitors, but simply do impressions on them and go through a bunch of talking points - typical influencer stuff. I still like his videos, but you gotta take them for what they are. HBU on the other hand is a serious review outlet you can actually rely on for technical information.
No, he meant there is no black crush, you're not suppose to lose detail in dark scenes in HDR. In SDR you can get black crush if you don't adjust black level equalizer. Kyle still stand correct.
Did you watch either of the videos?
the curvature changes constantly .
The AW3423DW would probably work for you then.
Cancelled my pre order for the G8 and went for the G7. Should still be great with 40 series GPUs and hopefully wont have any QC issues.
Another crappy curved monitor. Because it just works. Good job Samsung.
Excellent work HWU!
Someone has unrealistically high expectations of Samsung QC
It just works after 3 replacement units might be more accurate

They eye can perceive flat images as well as curved images as they are.
Curved displays with aggressive curves are terrible. They distort the images pure and simple. Worst offenders are 16:9 with 1000R that Samsung uses.
There are displays with mild curves like the 21:9 ones with 1800R curves. Those are fine. Any curves more aggresive than 1800R are progressively worse.

Absolutely love mine. I'm just not a fan of OLED. Sure, they look great... but burn-in is a real thing. All reviewers seem to give anything OLED 5 stars and then shit on Mini LED. I love the brightness of Mini-LED, makes everything pop in HDR. I do agree, the legs on the stand are ridiculous. Why isn't this video on monitors unboxed?
Recently went through two of these. Both had blotchy imperfections behind the screen that were blatantly obvious with bright backgrounds. This was ultimately the reason I returned them. The wobbly stand, horrendous distortion from the curve, and overall poor local dimming performance were just icing on the cake. Returned it and bought an LG C2 42” and man, what a difference. Would love to see LG migrate their OLED television tech over to their PC products.

a 1000R curve is a 1000R curve, it doesn't matter how big or wide the monitor is. it literally has the same effect in terms of distoring the view, which it actually does less so than a flat panel as long as you are within the radius of the curve.
Sure, but it's very difficult to stay in that "sweet spot" and when you aren't it's quite annoying.
A 1000R curve on a 27" is different from a 1000R curve on a 49" display. It's basic math. R means radius.

I'm hoping you look at LG new monitors that came out recently. Like the LG GQ950 the GQ850 and the new 48inch oled. That would be great.
Samsungs scanlines issue has existed for a long time. I remember owning a Korean Ultrawide by a company called Crossover (M340CLZ) back in 2016. The scanlines would happen all the time with darker solid colors and with very fine detail.
Still waiting for proper flat monitor 32" 4k true HDR and with G-sync if possible
Add 165Hz> and proper sRGB clamp and no restrictions in sRGB mode. Samsung already gets close but it's missing DP 2.0 and has to rely on old 1.4 with DSC and has constant QC issues.
LOL SO NOT TRUE
