Dear Trackside...at 57 years old, new to the hobby and find your ''discussion'' videos extremely interesting and important. Thank you again for your hard work in creating these learning materials.
Joey, Your videos are the reason I have stayed with RUclips. I really appreciate the effort you are making to offer your skills to the public. Well done!

Always a pleasure Joey, to revisit your older vids. Definitely agree on the easiness of making a sub structure from foam in the vertical position. Horizontal stacking is a bit of a waste of material. Plus, when that foam is covered over, what is indeed the purpose of such a massive amount of material. Going light in weight is the way for me. Even taking it to foam board, or gator board as you may call it. The paper cover of that foam makes it an excellent to glue the shell on. I glue cardboard 90° braces on the end of the board and use the cardboard weaving as a sub-base. Where needed I cover with a fine mesh before covering with paper mache. First finish is indeed the dirt colored paint and dirt. Love to dirty it up!!! Thanks again
Aaa I am a unskilled enthusiast but I go nuts with much of the slow presentation. Thank you for moving along at an efficient pace. I will look forward to your instructions as I build my knowledge and railroad.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I've been modeling since Jan 2015. I Love it! Retired! You have the best videos. I just found you of course! Will be using a lot of your ideas and how to's!
+Michael David Cilantro - Now you see why I failed out of mass communications in community college back in the day. I do a mean 1940's announcer voice imitation though. I'll have to incorporate that into a future video.
You are a breath of fresh air Joey. Really enjoy the way you present videos. I am not into the R.R.'s but the tips and confidence you throw out will work for me in my display's. Thanks for sharing.
I do appreciate the kind sentiments, If someone enjoys and (or) gets something out of the videos, we feel like we have accomplished something. Even if nothing more than to motive people, because honestly, if I can do it, anyone can.
hi everyone ,if anyone else wants to discover model railroad layouts and scenery try Panlarko Amazing Railroad Planner (just google it ) ? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my buddy got great success with it.
@H.J.D. interesting points ,if anyone else trying to find out best model train layouts try Panlarko Amazing Railroad Planner (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my buddy got amazing results with it.
hi we made the trip to bald knop this summer at cass.had a great time and lots of ideas for my modelrailroad here in the NETHERLANDS . love your video's and ideas. Thanks
+richard vd ark Thanks Richard, much appreciated. I am lucky to live so close to Cass and I am glad that you enjoyed the trip. It's always hit or miss with the weather at such high elevations.
If you have ever seen James Gregory's bit about environmentalist's about stopping construction in California over the kangaroo rat,DIRT!! Reminded me of it,it's a RAT!! Great video as always
I grew up in West Virginia, and the B&O ran right behind our house. I remember seeing the solid blue F units running freight like you show on your layout, but I have never been able to find them in that paint scheme. The only ones I have ever seen were the light blue passenger diesels. Are those you have custom painted?
Outstanding as always, Joey!! Your videos are always fun, and easy for ANY skill level to enjoy!! I've used your blah, blah, blah method before... Obviously, all us modelers come up with different "off the cuff" ideas. On my wood hill frames, I also use a staple gun... but then I drip a little thin CA glue over the staples. Haven't had one pull out yet! ;) .... just my 2 1/2 cents!
Amazing work, I enjoy watching your videos. I do have a question on a lot of your videos I have seen computer programs that show your layout design. Do you have a certain program you recommend that isn't too expensive. I'm in the process of designing my new layout, but I'm struggling to find ways of getting the ideas in my head to paper. I'd love any advice you have. Thanks for the help.
I just can’t decide on a layout for my terrain. I dismantled my old board bought the foam and static applicator plus others but i just can’t think of what to do and it’s driving me crazy
Excellent job as always...do you have any more info on your mini-layout? I'm thinking about an On30 layout but want to stay on the shallow end of the pond...
Peck, there is our facebook page on the layout facebook.com/sprucemodel and if you can get a copy, the Feb 2014 edition of O Gauge Railroadong mag 14 pages worth. Its on the cover. All about the mini layout exclusively.
charvel74 Thanks!, video on the ballast itself, not specifically. On the channel here there is a video on weathering the track which you may have seen. The ballast I use is a mix of medium gray and chalk dust put into a blender (like I do the dirt) and ground up finer. There are a couple of commercial brands that I like right out of the package, and they look decent but I like to get it a little finer as to look good in close up photos.
instead of plaster aparas I use shredded paper mache mixed with glue paint and water. it dries light and has a little flex after it dries, and get great textures
Excellent philosophy! Too many overthink it and end up not accomplishing anything. This concept gotten more accomplished in a short time than the rest of my life in building what I consider to be working towards my dream layout. I have learned so much by just jumping in keeping it simple and using what’s available to me. I do like stacking the blue foam I think it’s the best way to do it because of the terrain and topography that I am modeling. A ride on the Durango and Silverton is basically the concept. Feel free to check out my layout on my channel.
Joey! What exactly is that blue foam board called? Im having a hard time finding it! I just keep finding the white insulation foam that is all like beedy, if that makes sense...
+Sean Williams Available at any hardware store in the US and probably elsewhere in the world. Polystyrene Foam Board Insulation. Go in the insulation isle. You can't miss it. Some manufacturers it is pink, but it's all the same for our purposes.
Dow Styrofoam is the blue stuff. I think the pink is Owings Corning. There's even some funky purple now. Pretty much all the same. I think Lowe's even has its own brand of blue. AMOCO (yeah the gas company) makes theirs in an ugly light blue green. Visit construction sites that are using it and sometimes, they will let you have the scrap for free.
