Talking Watches With Tony Fadell

  • The name Tony Fadell doesn't ring as loud as some others when discussing kings of Silicon Valley - Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg - but to those who know, Tony Fadell is already an icon of engineering, entrepreneurship, and product design. It was Fadell who, in the 1990s, worked diligently to build the concept of hand-held computing devices while working for General Magic. His software would power Sony's early Magic Link device, and he played a large role in Philips Electronics' Palm Pilot competitors. But by the late '90s, he was sure he wanted to go out on his own, founding Fuse Systems and pitching the idea of a portable music player to a handful technology companies (and even a watch company!), all unsuccessfully. In 2001, he abandoned the idea of a startup and joined Apple to work closely on a product that would come to define the 21st century - the iPod. To say that Tony Fadell understands product design and interface would be an gross understatement, and that is why, when we became friendly, I was so interested to see which watches he was attracted to for himself. Now, you can find out for yourself. This is Talking Watches with Tony Fadell. For the full story, go here: www.hodinkee.com/articles/talk...

I've watched this so many times and it's still exciting to come back and see it yet again. I was a design intern at Nest and got to see Tony often. I even remember when this was being filmed in our office in Palo Alto. I've always loved watches and I even got to see Tony wearing several of these pieces throughout my internship. Tony helped shape some of my interest in watch brands and I love coming back to this video every so often to admire his collection.

It is in more cases than one, obviously you have to for them to tick, but when I got the Omega SMP I couldn’t stand the look of the bracelet over pictures. I planned on getting a Planet Ocean 39.5mm. I tried it on, too thick on the wrist for me. I tried on the SMP and was surprised by the comfort and look. You truly do have to wear them before passing judgment. Now I love the bracelet.

Great conclusion about the younger generation. I'm 23 and bought my first (high end for me) Omega SMP. For me, it comes from the appreciation of craftsmanship and heritage the watch has. I don't buy a watch solely for its ability to tell time, I buy it because it's special.

Honestly, with ALL watches in ALL price tiers, there should be a signed legal agreement that you MUST wear your watch for at least 24 hours every month. So glad to see each of these beautiful pieces getting some good wrist time. Some more than others, but all well worn and more to the point, enjoyed. 👍🏼

Mechanical watches, especially the great brands, like those on the table in front of you, guys, they will be thriving more and more just because of what they are - mechanical. Digital watches and timpepieces are less and less attractive and usually attract the young generation that is inspired by the technology. But once you begin to appreciate a craftsmanship, there is where mechanical watches talk. Mechanical watches are timeless, more and more appreciated, more and more admired and all the more recognized. You always have a more refined taste to wear (and appreciate) a mechanical watch than a digital one. That makes a man more like a gentleman.

2022 has marked a great year for watch making so far. I’m not sure what brought it back, maybe the MoonSwatch, maybe the fact that watches keep ticking our entire lives when electronics run out of charge in a few days, they’re seen as investments, or maybe it’s the style. But they’ve hit back, it’s being talked about, and the years not even over yet.
