    The key point for more spin on the disc (which often ends up with more distance) is not about fan grip vs power grip. Its about pressing your thumb firmly against your pointer finger. This can be done with both grip types. "Fan pinch" grip gives me a better angle control (putters, mids) while "power pinch" grip gives me a more consistent release point on long distance throws(drivers).

    • @jeffwells641
      @jeffwells641 2 года назад

      Since the pinch grip focuses on exactly that, it may be a good training practice to switch to pinch for a period of time to improve that lever action out of the hand. Then, when you've got that lever action really nailed down, re-introduce the other grip types to modify other aspects of your throw.

    • @FizzyP

      People claim this or that gets them more spin but I always wonder "how would you know?" Sure it feels like it's ripping off your fingers in some new and exciting way but I'm not convinced there's more spin involved. Less spin means more turn (in an understable disc), which can give you the illusion of power. It's easy to throw a disc, have it turn in a way it never has before, and conclude you crushed it, when actually you didn't really throw it faster, you just through it with less spin. Just based on flights, I would not be surprised if the pinch group produces less spin. Forehand is an excellent example of these sort of misleading behaviors. Many people believe forehands have more spin. They don't. They have less. But, due to the feeling of the disc coming out of your hand, and all the deliberate effort you have to put into getting enough spin on a flick, most people are under the false impression that forehands have extra spin. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I would like to know how you can tell.

    • @PeachFrFree
      @PeachFrFree 2 года назад

      @@FizzyP Forehands do not have more spin, you have to impose the spin yourself by flicking your wrist. It doesn't come natural out of the hand like a back hand. More spin = more distance in every disc, it depends on your angle of release on whether you are getting the full flight out of it. Forehands don't have more turn initially because there is less spin. Most amateurs impose unnecessary torque on the wrong axis causing the disc to flip more. Less spin also doesn't mean there will e more turn, the turn might happen quicker because there's more friction and the disc is slowing down quicker, it will also fade quicker than if you had higher revolutions.

    • @jeffwells641
      @jeffwells641 2 года назад +2

      @@FizzyP More spin means the flight characteristics of the disc change, and you can definitely notice that.
      The spin is what is keeping a disc flat through the air in flight. Without spin the disc would quickly fly off to the left or the right. So more spin makes a disc behave more neutrally stable, while less spin will accentuate either understable or overstable characteristics, depending on the disc and how much speed you can put on the disc. This is why very long throwers can still throw normal discs - generally speaking the faster you can throw the more spin you put on the disc, so their gyroscopic effect is pulling the disc toward neutral while the aerodynamics of the disc push it left or right. Someone who is struggling to get the discs to behave the way they want them to is probably not getting enough spin on the disc for their arm speed.
      The best way to conceptualize what's happening is to consider a basic spinning top. As long as the top spins fast enough, it stays relatively stable, maybe making small loops but generally staying upright. As the top slows down, it loses that gyroscopic stabilizing effect and starts to lean to the side more and more before finally falling over.
      Discs do the same thing. The big difference is because the disc is also moving through the air, the effect when it slows down and loses gyroscopic stability is to turn left, and when it speeds up with low gyroscopic stability it turns right.
      This is why an Innova Leopard can be a 600' pro's favorite lower-speed fairway driver, while a 300' amateur can't throw a leopard because it flips over too easily. The 300' thrower doesn't have enough spin for his arm speed, while the 600' thrower does.

Doing a bunch of field work today to test it out! the power grip just always felt wrong. Based on the physics of a gyroscope, which is what a disc is, the more spin, the longer it'll stay in the air. thank you!

    While we are in the space of debunking myths. Let's debunk the spin = turn myth. It's quite the opposite, actually. Spin INCREASES stability. Speed INCREASES turn. Think about throwing a driver really spinny but only 100'. It's gonna be overstable. Think of throwing a putter hard but with bad form (no spin) they act much more understable than someone with good spin to counteract the speed. Spin and speed are opposing forces that work together to keep a disc in flight.

    • @NickCarroll
      @NickCarroll 2 года назад +1

      Nailed it, Tyler! I'll be making a video on this in the future, but there's speed (directional velocity) and there's spin (rotational velocity) and these features are complementary. Generally speaking you can put force on the disc to increase the travel rate, and torque on it to increase the spin rate. Ideally you put the optimal amount of both on the disc with proper grip and form. Not easy to do.

    • @FizzyP
      @FizzyP 2 года назад +2

      You have to be very careful what you mean by "spin increases stability". It increases stability in the sense of neutrality, not in the sense of overstability. With a bunch of spin, an overstable disc will fade slower and an understable disc will turn slower. But in both cases they're doing what they already want to do, in a muted way. More spin does not make discs more overstable it just makes them resistant to changing their behavior (i.e. turn and fade resistance).

    • @tyler_glasgow
      @tyler_glasgow 2 года назад +1

      @@FizzyP yes of course. I typically don't use the word "stable" like a lot of disc golfers. Stable to me is what many call "neutral". Overstable, stable, understable.

    • @NickCarroll
      @NickCarroll 2 года назад

      @@FizzyP This is correct. It's like the "law of limited returns" and ultimately so long as the disc is spinning fast enough and doesn't exhibit wobble, it'll keep it's expected flight path.

    The disc golf guru of my area explains it like that:
    The Disc leaving your hand is the last pivot point of your throw (following wrist, elbow...) that excellerates the disc.
    You can change the lever on that last pivot point depending on where you put the pressure (in reference to your wrist).
    The lever can be made longer with more potential distance (front loaded - pointer finger & thumb) or shorter with less distance potenciel but more touch (back loaded - palm & other fingers)
    You can use these different pressure points even without changing the grip (at least if your grip features thumb an pointerfinger close to each other)

      Your English is mostly wonderful. Better than many native speakers. The only errors I see are that the spelling of "excellerates" should be "accelerates", and "potenciel" should be "potential". And even those are both phonetically correct. Apart from that, this is impressively written for a second language. 👍

    More spin will make the disc fly more stable. It’s possible you have less spin, giving a bit less stability and more distance. But, it’s more likely that spin is similar and speed is a few mph higher with a bigger hit. Good video.

    • @BigFlexy007
      @BigFlexy007 2 года назад

      I think you may have this backwards.. the reason why discs hyzer out at the end of their flight is because it's losing speed and it's spin is decreasing.. a good example is seeing how a "stable" disc flies with a back hand throw compared to the same disc thrown forehand.. often times people find they can "turn" a stable disc forehand because forehand mechanics naturally impart more spin on the disc thus altering its perceived flight characteristics.. take a high speed stable driver and toss it 50ft.. that sucker will hyzer right to the ground.. reason: low speed and less spin..

    • @tyler_glasgow

      Yeah I see this said a lot. Online, in person, all over. People get more turn on their disc and more distance and say "I got more spin on it". Don't believe that's usually true. • @BigFlexy007
      @BigFlexy007 2 года назад

      It's also the reason why it's recommended for new players to throw understable disc that turn naturally because newer throwers can't generate power and spin to get a full flight.. until they get obsessed and practice every day.. and start ripping those things.. then understandable discs become rollers..

    • @BigFlexy007

    I think the reason the pinch is so effective for you is because you are apply more force to the disc. When held correctly the power grip should put more force on the disc especially for higher arm speeds.
    Also using less fingers on the disc will potentially injure those fingers because the force of the throw is not dispersed between 4 fingers, but only 2.

    Spin rates make a huge difference. Simon Lizotte did a video with arm speed and different discs. The other person he had throwing with him had equivalent arm speeds, but was consistently getting out thrown by Simon (most will). Same goes for David Wiggins Jr. (who holds the world distance record). He used the 4-finger power grip for the throws to set that record. My point is; throw how it works for you. For me the 4-finger grip works best because that is more comfortable, and for a friend of mine (who bombs with a regular fan grip) don-t find the 4-finger power grip any comfortable at all. Saying that something is just straight up better than something else when it comes to comfort that varies because of hand size and other variables is in my opinion wrong.
    I also saw someone else in the comments say something about looseness in the wrist. If one is not loose in the wrist with the 4-finger grip one can try the pinch grip to make the last pivot point smaller with it being between just two fingers instead of in the wrist.
    No hate though! Only love.
    And sorry if there is something wrong with my grammar. English is not my first language. :)

      Gannon Buhr has also posted a video of his form in slow motion (where he uses the 4-finger grip). Take a look at that video and see how much movement there is in his loose wrist. For those who aren't able to throw with a loose wrist, that is what you will achieve with the pinch grip.

    Interesting video. I noticed last week that when I tried to fan grip my fairway drivers for “more control” I had to add more hyzer or they would flip over. I was also releasing with less power and getting the same distance as a power grip.

    I watched your first power grip is fake video and that same day I went to try it. I have never in all of my disc golf experience seen such an immediate performance difference. I can usually throw about 20-30% further. I can also fully flip discs like the Rive on 70% power what would take 90% with the power grip. I also find that I have a much more flexible range of angles to throw at while maintaining maximum power

      I was thinking the same. The power grip might be too tucked and tight for his arm speed so he's getting betterment release pinched but would probably go back to the power grip with a faster arm speed. I used to use this grip when my max was 350 but switched to power as i got better and gained 50+ ft

    This would explain why when I would use a fan grip before I would get the same, sometimes more distance. I was using the middle finger as my pinch and the index finger was just kind of there. I'll give both a try again and see the results. Thanks for the video

    Technically speaking, you're getting more spin if you are able to use the thumb and index (pointer) finger effectively as a fulcrum. The torque, or rotational velocity that is created, actually acts as a stabilizing factor on the disc in flight. The less spin a disc has, the more susceptible it is to factors like turbulence, thus making the disc less stable, and more prone to losing momentum and changing its flight path. The disc wobbling in the air actually slows it down and will make it fall to the ground much sooner. Also, if you got more speed for the same spin, the disc would be relatively less stable. But generally speaking, more spin equals more stability in fight. So that's likely why you're getting more distance by pinching the disc first, and letting the rest of your fingers grab the disc where comfortable. Shout-out to Tyler Glasgow in the comments who also got this right.
    On a side note: The traditional power grip (as taught by a lot of people) works best for distance drivers with wide enough rims to where gripping the rim with all 4 fingers provides a lot better grip. The discs with the thinnest rims - putters - typically are the hardest to make that power grip work, which is why a lot of people use more fan-type grips with them. As someone who power grips everything, I've started to experiment with fan-style grips across the board. Coincidentally it mirrors what you're teaching. I've always started with a pinch grip, then let the rest of my fingers grip the disc based on that. But it's starting to evolve more towards a "power fan" grip, and your videos on this has helped to crystalize (for me) what I've been doing. So thank you, Dylan!

My pinky lags and stays on the disc too long making me throw right and I don’t get as much spin using pinch grip. Still throw it using putters and beaded mids.

    I started doing this in the beginning of the summer and I was gaining about 30-50ft, my mistake was using this grip for any shot over 250ft and after doing it for a month my pointer & middle finger would just ache non stop. So if you use this grip I would recommend limiting it to only bomber throws that you need that lil extra distance on. Maybe its just my weak fingers tho 🤷‍♂

    I've found just the opposite to be true. I gained spin and distance moving to a true power trip vs a grip that was somewhere between a power grip and a fan grip. What I think you miss in your two videos on this is that the difference is not in how you place your fingers on the disc but WHERE you are applying pressure with your fingers. If the pressure is applied closer to the thumb, or the leading part of the hand in the throw, then your pivot point is more forward and it is more likely that you will get more spin and potentially a faster release. I think your comment on your previous video "they all do this" is a bit disingenuine. In fact, you reference Drew Gibson's video with Overthrow. In that video, Drew says that he uses the power grip for max distance, not the modified fan grip. Drew has such an elite level of power that he can get more snap and spin applying grip pressure in the middle of his fingers than what most of us can get by having the grip pressure closer to the thumb (or the leading part of the hand in the throw). It isn't a good comparison when he throws 70+ mph and your typical audience is 10-20% slower than that.

    Thanks for the great video and in-depth look at the power/fan grip. Do you think that a loose pinch/fan grip converts to a power grip at the point of release? I have been working with the pinch and 3-finger grip for the last 2 weeks and it almost feels like all of my fingers are against the rim at the exact moment that the disc rips out of my hand despite using the pinch/fan grip. I find this happens more when I keep the wrist loose and the grip firm but not rock hard. Perhaps it ends up being both in the end?

    this is all very unscientific: you only think you have more spin, but in reality you have no clue until you put a sensor onto the disc itself to measure rotation. as for throwing the honey farther, you are so inconsistent, that this may have simply been one of your better launches, and not necessarily due to the disc. the fact that you're admitting you haven't quite got the throw down pat is testament to your inconsistency, and the unreliability of your presumptions and conclusions.

    So you are actually not using the "Power Pocket" in most of these throws and it looks like you have an extension of your arm by rolling the disc forward in your grip which would give you more distance just by virtue of lengthening the kinetic chain of your arm. I dont think I can explain the power pocket well in a yt comment, but if you incorporate the power pocket and this new grip you will see a massive breakthrough. Probably jump to 450-460'.

    I used the pinch grip for the first time today doing field work and then played a round. Instantly I gained about 40ft of distance and had much more spin on the drivers. Fingers dont hurt at all and I felt like I only had to throw about 70% power to reach 375ft consistently. Not putting all my power into my drives helps to keep the accuracy off the tee. For me this was a total game changer. Thanks for the videos and keep up the great work.

    Nothing definitive can be gleaned from your video ... it is entirely possible that because you have convinced yourself a pinch grip will get you more distance that you are subconsciously putting a little more into you throws with that grip, even if your intentions are honest (which I believe you are). There are plenty of bombers out there that use a power grip (see Drew Gibson); if you want to be able to draw real conclusions beyond the anecdotal evidence that the pinch grip works for you, then put together a better experiment. One, measure the weather conditions sessions and lay them side by side (you need wind, temperature, pressure and precipitation to all be as close to identical as possible); two, film yourself from the side and splice together the two experiments (like the ESPN simulcam used to compare 40 times, or put them side by side in slow motion with a timer to the hundredths of a sec) with like discs so you can ensure nothing is changing in your form; three, measure your arm speeds; four measure the distance and compare each disc to itself for each grip.

    Disc Golfers Truly Secret Sauce Stuff Here that very little video content covers(80ft personal gain with thumb/grip/pressure changes only).
    I found gripping techniques to be the biggest immediate game changer for me. 1st year player and was stuck at 270 to 300 frustratingly. Most distance youtube help content just wasn't helping at all . Later I stumbled onto an obscure video about grip/thumb pressure/strength... This is where things started changing for me. Immediately after playing around with grip/thumb pressure, I noticed a much firmer/hard power grip was giving me another ez 30 feet... (300 to 330 avg).
    Happy with this change it got my brain going... A few weeks later I started trying to tighten my fulcrum of release which aka is really trying to get to a 2 or 3 finger tight fulcrum release with the thumb over top of one of those 2 fingers (Just like this video) Wham bam another 50 ft... And my x-step form is bad and could easily be accused of using too much arm but hey I can continue to work on that but working on that alone was not netting me these results ... not even close...
    I believe there is a way to obtain the benefits of both grips that I'm dying to try this weekend. Use the 3 to 4 finger power grip with the thumb tight over either the index or middle finger (whatever is comfortable)... The power grip with the palm helps you accelerate the final wrist flick faster than a pinch while still providing strength enough to able to hold onto the disc... So the idea is to use the power grip to get the wrist flick accelerating but release everything but the pinch just prior to the disc ripping out of the pinch... I'm betting this will yield even more distance. Combine this eventually with the eventual perfection of the perfect towel whip release and i bet this is the mystery behind folks i've seen get some serious easy distance with far less that preachingly perfect x-step form.
