The amount of times I've watched that infamous moment in the title match, I've never actually known whet happened throughout the rest of the telecast. Thx for providing much-needed context and yea just showed how cocky of an attitude Ernie had.
I agree, this is one of the iconic matches in PBA history. The arena setting, the personalities involved, the reactions to the ending...really good match. Not mad that Ernie got the win that day given the way he bowled on the show. For all those doubting Ernie's talent, he was a consistent money winner on the PBA for a long, long time and also won the Masters the next year at the age of 53. Sometimes throwing the ball straight up 10 gets the job done.
The Right Lane, That was an awesome Breakdown Video from the Stepladder Finals of the Touring Players Championship especially the Title Match that had an intense finish between Ernie Schlegel and Randy Pedersen. Also, the Moment that stood out was the Solid 8 pin that Randy Pedersen left in the 10th frame. Also, The Telecast that I would like for you to review is the Florida Open from 1992.
I remember this match like it was yesterday. I watched it live as a kid and was devastated by the 8 pin. Seeing that made me so upset as Randy was one of my favorite bowlers to watch. Ernie was def a character. Good ole days of bowling.
Ernie Schlegel was everything wrong with marginal talent. He acted like he did something to deserve to win the event rather than acting like he got lucky because his opponent got the worst break in bowling history. Even Marshall Holman didn't act like a complete ass after his 1996 Ebonite Classic win eight years after his last one.
Marginal talent? Ernie won six PBA titles and an ABC Masters, which is a lot more than 99.99% of "pro" bowlers have, and he did it back in the day when millions of people bowled and hundreds of guys fought for spots on the national tour stops, unlike today. His style wasn't pretty, but it got the job done, and he cashed a lot of PBA checks.
Check out Shlegels interview on Bowling With the Fefs channel. It's pure gold. He goes on and on about Pedersen not shaking his hand and dishes dirt on a lot of the old bowlers. He still an absolute jerk to this day. You could tell Fef was getting uncomfortable and was trying to end the interview but Ernie wouldn't shut up. It was great. Randy was on later and said how Ernies wife would exclaim loudly "It's a Pedersen!" EVERY time someone left an 8 pin, she was a jerk too with that stupid stuffed monkey she would carry around. Ironically, Randy is more famous for this match than if he would've won. The only reason Voss shrugged off the loss so well was because Ernie and his wife were trying to partner with Voss to commercialize and capitalize on his good looks. Kind of like Johnny Miller did in golf. Good stuff!
I was totally cool with Schlegel's trash talkin until the stone 8. As someone who also talks trash in bowling, I'm also respectful. What Schlegel did at the end of that match was not cool at all. Should have remained silent and waited for Petersen to finish the frame.
I recalled correctly, as all this footage confirmed at the worst an occasional 4-9 stood and even one 7-10...but NOTHING else stood on solid pocket shots...so for an 8 to suddenly appear??? YEAH, worst break on a pured shot in any telecast I ever watched.

I lived through PBA bowling from 1970 to now, and I watched this in real time. Schlegel's antics were totally forgivable because he was a huge underdog as he hadn't been on TV in 6 years. Meanwhile, Voss, and to a lesser extent Pedersen, were big money winners, with Brian Voss being one of the dominant players on the tour. Also, remember that we haven't hit the low popularity era of bowling (2000-2015) yet, where the prize money was so low, you couldn't even make a comfortable living bowling unless you were one of the top 5 money earners. In this era, the talent was incredibly thin, and you had the crazy phenomena of over-50s, and even women, winning tournaments. In 1995, it was extraordinary for someone at age 52 to win a tournament. Most everyone was really pulling for Schlegel. Another thing: I think people forgave Schlegel for his trash talking etc. because the dude has always been a street fighter kind of bowler. A real pot-game, action bowler. I remember a year in the 70s when, whenever he made the TV finals, under his home town, ABC-TV listed "USA". He and his wife lived in a mobile home and just drove around following the tour and doing pot games. And that's another thing: I'm glad these clips showed his wife in the stands. (She was the brunette.) She was always super loud and demonstrative in the stands, and I think was part of what helped Ernie with the mental game.
Nah, he always tried to mess with people because he wasn't good enoughl to beat them straight up. I can't stand bowling with an obnoxious ass like Schlegel. He fought with everyone. Pictured himself as a hustler. A legend in his own mind.

I’m on a bowling school team and in a tournament we had last week Here’s the full story Last Friday at the tournament I got the JVB all tournament team with 3rd place ( my medal is coming soon ) and other people from my team and other school where in the top 8 for JVB ( all tournament team ) . How I did was in the first part of the seeding round I had picked up the 6-7-10 ( my first time picking it up ) as well as other spares and maybe 1 strike or two. The second part i had my third turkey and one spare. My total was 128+136 =264. Since my team had the top seed we had bye after a lunch break so whoever won to the other team played us in the finals. Here is the most intense part of the tournament which was the closest match I’ve ever been in the first baker we were leading for about 4 frames by about 30 points and then out of no where the other team ( who had the lowest seed ) three people had one strike per person that equaled a turkey we kept closer and closer until we won 119-114 and the same thing on the second baker except we won 124 to 119 which equaled 10 points ( or you could say pins ) this was my first tournament to win and I just can’t get over how awsome it was. I know I’m not apart of the PBA but it was just an awsome tournament for everyone and the team we played in the finals they pushed our limits and my favorite part was the finals it was like comeback after comeback for both teams and that’s how teams need to be they need to encourage each other and give tips and sports like bowling each player should get better and better each frame Edit: last year was my first year on the middle school team and o averaged about 80’s-90’s and then this year I’m averaging 110’s - 120’s and I was a sub Now I’m 4 in my teams starting line up and 4-0 In the season ( undefeated )
I would have talked trash right back and even harder. Would have been like "do you even know how to rotate a bowling ball" or "that should have been a 5-7-10." I would have been ruthless towards him. And on my strikes I would have been like "see how much better that looked?"
The most incredible bowling match in PBA history? Not by a long shot. Don Johnson's 299-268 win over Dick Ritger in the 1970 TOC title match was better. Johnson front nined and still had to mark the 10th to secure a win. If not for a stubborn 8 pin (it happens to everybody) and Ernie Schlegel's jackass behavior, this match would be largely forgotten.
Ernie was awesome, yeah he was a prick and a bit of douche but he made the PBA interesting. Love the athleticism and outright better shot making ability of the modern tour, but it just cannot compare to the 80s and 90s in terms of characters and interesting people. He was also a really good action bowler back in the day and fully deserved this win, he stuck with Randy all match and didn't fold at all. He made Randy have to get up and perform in the 10th and Randy choked, threw a horrible shot in the 10th.......

The 8 pin is constantly brought up with Randy and I get the sense that he is more annoyed at that than Ernies reaction which makes sense in context.
