I live in San Antonio. I’ve been a Spurs fan my entire life. I’ve learned more about leadership, character, and how to create autonomy watching them than I have in any business book I’ve ever read.

This was a session for a select group of coaches. The "empty seats" are empty because only a few hundred were invited.
Oh well. What more can one add? He is the all time greatest basketball mind to me. An astute coach that truly mastered his craft. Perhaps Pop can be a motivational speaker someday once he retires from basketball. I would pay a fortune just to hear him speak.
And he has lived it, not just taught it.

Hi Roxann. His philos to building character is simply stated: a person has to get over themself. Meaning, honestly confronting the faults of the ego, and learning to not allow jealousy and selfishness to cripple your given talent or trust in teammates.

@@CharlesAlvear first of all he doesn't hate them, but has disdain for questions asked that are stupid or aren't well articulated which he gets a lot of.
He's a special coach. He knows how to connect with his players and make them a team. Same thing Phil Jackson did, Red Auerbach did, Coach K does, John Wooden, etc...there's a common thing between them all, they know how to connect and coach. they get/had players take on the system and with that they were successful teams.

It's cool to hear many of the principles I've utilized for years coaching and a lot of things I do differently. I truly appreciate the honest way he coaches the entire team. I, however, enjoy the process of developing young men more than necessarily wanting finished products. I wish there was a video like this for Hubie Brown, one of the greats.

Talking about Time Outs was the best thing I heard throughout this whole video
Coaching God! I like that he rests his key players even if he gets fined by the NBA. The league has been killing the careers of its players by having too closely scheduled games, i.e. back-to-back. If you look back at the lockout season where they resume the shortened season that scheduled 3 games over three nights, there was a very high rate of injuries especially to star players like Rose and Kobe.
His players are also selected for not just skill but also character and selflessness. In other words, team ball. That's what teams like the Knicks, Rockets and late Kobe-era Lakers fail to understand. The Carmelos and Hardens will never lead their teams to championships even though they are highly skilled individual players because they don't make their teams better with selfish me-ball play.

This video has given me tremendous respect for this coach and his team. I'll be rooting for my brother in the Christ, Steph Curry, but I won't be too disappointed if the Spurs beat them come playoffs.

He's the GOAT coach no doubt about it to me. Phil was an amazing coach, not taking that away from him, but he worked with players that were going to be clear cut superstars since high school/college. Tim Duncan is the only player that was like that for pop naturally. The rest of his team? Manu? Parker? Amazing players that are obvious hall of famers. Can you imagine that on any other team, under any other coach? I can't.
Yep. I put Pop above Phil because he was able to do more with less.
Some of it is self-caused. The first thing he states in this speech is that he doesn't want "me first" guys in any of his teams, and as most "superstars" are just iike that, he doesn't want them. Is not as if he couldn't have had more "superstars" in his team - is that he never aimed for it, because he didn't want them in the first place.
Besides that, I can't give less of a damn about the rings they actually won. It's 5, but I don't care had they been 3, 1, or 7, because that's not what's great about Popovich and the Spurs. Their biggest achievement is not those 5 rings. Is that every.single.season. for the last 2 decades they've been a serious, believable, contender to the ring. With better and worse team quality, with bigger or lower prospects, but they've always been up there. Sure, not always winning, but always up there, always feared, always respected. in fact some of those years one could hardly believe what kind of game the Spurs were putting up with the players they had on paper. THAT'S the legendary part about this team and that coach, not the rings.
Think of it, it's been 20 years now where that organization has, year after year, put up a team that was a serious match for anyone. Then of course they would succeed or not, but for the last 20 years NOONE has been able to take a W vs the Spurs for granted, while every other organization has had those "we need to rebuild" years where they intentionally tank, and in which at times it looks like a circus. No other team has achieved that, that I can think of. And certainly I can't even imagine Pop coaching in an organization that intentionally tanks. He's all about working hard and winning.
The only other competitor I can think of for GOAT coaches is Red Auerbach: 9 rings, innovative play style, strong player development, etc.

Pop is the greatest coach of all time. He's done the most with the least. His ability to not care about what most others care about is the reason why. He marches to the beat of his own drum and leads with logic. I've never heard him say something that I could honestly disagree with.
Exactly! Pop use what was given to him. A true definition of a coach. No disrespect to other coaches but they have a lot advantage with Star Players. Besides from that his coaching staff is successful on their own.
I just love how Pop's definition of an unsuccessful season is losing in the first round when there are organizations that haven't even got close for a while.

what does a player from a different place have to do with that? it's all about the type of person u are.
+Antbeast23 because they didn't grow up watching ESPN just as much American players did? we all see the highlight from a certain player only when's it's on the stats(points, blocks, steals, etc), but that player might shoot 5-23 and 10 out of the 18 misses are dumb shots. the motivation is just too different imo, some foreign players might be happy just to be in the NBA, while American players are the "go get em cheque"

As far as motivation that may be true since most players is to get in the NBA. Espn only shows highlights plays which I hate also. I haven't really watch espn for awhile now.

This is why the Spurs are an elite team who hasn't won less the 50 games and hasn't missed the playoffs in 20 years. It's really sad that everyone has gotten so use to them winning that now every year they say, "It's the just Spurs, they'll just do their thing. Now lets talk about other teams."
