We still love Derrick in San Antonio! We know he’s on to bigger and better things but I will always cherish the time he was in San Antonio

I've met Pop at a coaching seminar and trust me when I tell y'all he's NOTHING like his media persona. He's the most humble, compassionate, and patient dude I've ever met considering his stature in the sport. Don't be intimidated!
He is one of those coaches I feel will coach till he can't then shortly after he will pass

Funny to me his media persona gives off all those attributes. Always appreciate Pop's authenticity and his demand that we be better as people and as a collective. Much respect!

You can't be one of the greatest to ever coach, if not the greatest, coaching super athletes and stars, and have mentored pretty much a third of the coaches in the league at that point, and not be an incredible human being.

You will always hear that from most players been under Pop's coaching. Player's well-being and success is always his priority.
Pop is the last of a dying breed of coaches that have gotten players to not only buy in to his system but also helping them become their best. P. Riley, P. Jackson & C. Daly were also great at micro managing...

@@DJ-ys9pv Steve Kerr coached with Pop, so he’s in a similar vein. He’s just not all in with their methods and abilities like the other coaches mentioned are in my opinion. What he’s done with the Warriors is fantastic, though.
@@DJ-ys9pv Casual fan. Steve Kerr inherited his team and Erik was fortunate to get Lebron, Bosh to play with wade. Greg Popovich built his team from the ground up.

Not injuries, Stephen Jackson lol. He wasn’t down with giving up his starting spot to Kawhi or Danny Green. Eventually pop had to cut him cuse it wasn’t gonna work out anymore. Kawhi was a starter from then on out, Pop knew lol
It was actually Richard Jefferson, and then they traded Richard Jefferson for Stephen Jackson but I can't remember if Kawhi was already starting by the time they traded RJ.
Derrick White gets some credit but he was a huge part of the Celtics run last year and this year. Doesn’t always get stats but always impacts the game

As a Spurs fan, I hated to see him leave. He is humble off the court but plays with confidence and decisiveness on the court.
He’s a fantastic perimeter defender. Which unfortunately, doesn’t always show up on his immediate stats

Pop is the greatest NBA coach. Ever since 2014 every team that has been to the finals (except the bubble) has been Pop affiliated ....
On the court sidelines you might discuss his best ever status but the fact that half the current nba coaching universe comes from his teaching makes him the GOAT coach for me

There were unwritten stories in the media about Pop by his peers, his assistant coaches, guys he’s been around with longer that he is the most kindest, nicest, father figure, and greatest teacher. and the general public do not know this and it is unfair as he is always shown in TV being sarcastic, occasionally rude to media…
I'm one of those people who actually likes that he is rude to the media. Those people are self-righteous clowns. It's so funny when someone dodges a question, a lot of times media members act like you have to answer them, like they're congress or something and they have a right to browbeat someone. Pop gives it right back to them. Good for him, f*ck reporters. All they do is twist words, anyway

When I think of Derrick White I think of his transition defense. More than once I have seen him go 1 v 2 or 1 v 3 on a fast break and find a way to break it up.
Bulls fan here, I wish we had a Gregg Pop coach for the past 2 decades. For sure we would have won at least 2 chips.

I think the Spurs greatness was the depth of their teams not only their main talented players. They really need a lot of good fortune in order to become a playoff team again.
Part of their greatness was their scouting accuracy in Europe and drafting well, which is still going atrong. Kawhi not buying in that mindset was what took us out of contention, we never recovered afterwards, but I think next year we'll be a playoff team again.

@@jadenayala1281 I agreed with Tony. Most leaders would step in and say something when a team member is disrupting the culture the way Kawhi was trying to do. At the end of the day, K wanted to mess around and the Spurs weren't having it. He couldn't handle not being catered to. He wasn't a Spur. He left. That's how it goes sometimes, but at least the vets, pop, and the front office didn't cater to a diva's demands and let the culture crumble. I'd rather have the culture than the player.

The thing that nobody ever considers, is that people draft superstars that don't pan out all the time. It's not the fact that we had a three headed monster, it's the fact that we identified them in the draft (in terms of Tony and Manu), then put them in a position to win. That is so key. We coached them up, put them in stable situation with a good culture, and built an offensive and defensive system where they could flourish.
Were the players good? Of course. But did the Spurs get more out of them than most other teams would have? Hell yes. That's meaningful and a sign of how good Greg and the rest of the organization is. Not this lazy argument that oh the Spurs had three hall of famers so of course they had a dynasty. No, no those three guys became hall of famers because the Spurs helped bring greatness out of them, especially coach Pop.

Chip Engelland (spelling error possible). He's the legendary Spurs shooting coach who either retired or found employment elsewhere but he was absolutely instrumental in Kawhi's development. His jumper in college was a trainwreck. He went from "there's no chance he makes that" to "that's a guaranteed bucket from the elbow."

Pop had a great situation with Duncan but hasn’t had winning success since Duncan’s departure. Don’t know if I can call him the greatest. I’d put Phill ahead of Pop based more on his coaching philosophy.
Pop learned from Larry Brown. Brown learned from Dean Smith. Smith learned from Phog Allen and Allen learned from DR. JAMES NAISMITH.
I think one of the things that makes him the GOAT is Duncan, Ginobili and Parker. Props to him for getting them to buy in fully to his system and be the leaders but he hasn't done anything without them
Duncan was the no brainer #1 but parker was the 28th pick, manu was a second rounder. how many other people have hit on one star this late let alone 2?

Tim Duncan made Pop just as Tom Brady made Bill Belichick. It's a players' game. Without the players, a coach can't do that much. Look at San Antonio today. Phil Jackson is still #1. Red Auerbach is #2. Pop is #3. Pat Riley is #4.

I might be pop’s biggest critic. When you’re watching every move, it’s easy to see the flaws in anything. He had a great system anchored by two of the most unselfish and talented big men ever. Sometimes he cost himself with his smartest guy in the room act. He’s obviously a great teacher and evaluator.

Actually? Parker made him great, Pop's gameplans were nothing special, and Parker made the magic happen. Of course Duncan was the superstar, but as far as coaching? Without Parker they wouldn't have had a single set play.
