    This song is sad because she has so much hope and sees this celebration and she doesn't know how it is about her death. Just seeing her happy and having hope is sad but this song is also really just a great happy song. (sorry if that made no sense)

      @@jvpolkim That is EXCLUSIVELY to the above musical adaptation of the story, which (if we're being honest with ourselves) "Disney"-fied a TRAGIC character MEANT to die (she IS the "Wicked" Witch of the West, after all). In the source novel (Gregory MacGuire's _WICKED: The Life & Times of The Wicked Witch of the West_ written in 1995, as the first in the 4-part *Wicked Years* saga), she LEGITIMATELY MELTS FOR REAL. She genuinely turns into a puddle from an accidental Mercy Kill administered by Dorothy Gale (she was trying to put out a fire that had initially burnt the Scarecrow, but had spread unintentionally to Elphie's black, flammable dress with matching hat & cape) & NEVER COMES BACK. Emotionally racked Glinda has a teary breakdown in front of Fiyero X Elphaba bastard love child Liir in the first sequel titled _Son of a Witch_ upon their first - and, as it stands, their only - meeting, after which she resigns herself to watching over him from afar via her crystal ball like your typical Fairy Godmother as he undergoes his own journey of self-discovery, but not before bequeathing him with the charred broom she took as a keepsake following the news of Elphie's demise & the subsequent departures of both The Wizard (charlatan magician & worst-father-ever-to-Elphie that he is) and country bumpkin farm girl Dorothy Gale (who used Nessarose's magicked shoes to wish herself & her yapping terrier Toto home by simply clicking her heels together 3 times whilst repeating the iconic phrase, "There's No Place Like Home", as Glinda used her magic to heighten what residual power the enchanted footwear had to make Dorothy & her dog disappear back to Kansas from whence they came). Following The Cowardly Lion's own tale _A Lion Among Men_ focusing on his new role as King of Beasts in the Forest (and one of the few sentient Animals still remaining), the finale sequel _Out of OZ_ centers around Liir & his coven nursemaid wife Candle's green-tinted daughter, ironically but fittingly named Rain.

      @@susanstorm7910 The irony of a song titled "No One Mourns the Wicked" when fans, Glinda, Dorothy, and even the ashamed charlatan Wizard after the fact do mourn Elphie's death (which is only staged in the musical, whereas in the 1995 novel, her melting scene is genuine & she never comes back, with the sequel books focusing on Elphie & Fiyero's lovechild Liir [Son of a Witch] and later, Liir & his nursemaid coven wife Candle's green-tinted daughter rather conveniently named Rain [Out of OZ]).

    +Matthew Maddalena
    -- It is meant to be belted which is why they chose her for the original, Broadway opening, Elphaba. It's how the producers and director wanted it then. It's also about her energy and her commitment as Elphaba. Theater is not just about voice quality; there is so much more to it. Idina and Kristen had it all. Many of the others just had the voice.

    You can definitely see she inspired herself on Margaret Hamilton's performance in the Wizard of Oz movie. The way she walks and moves her hands... I think it's amazing, she really is a younger Wicked Witch of the West. Hannah Corneauh performed very well too.
    This song is one of my favorites, it manages to be so sad and happy at the same time.

      From a purely technical standpoint, you can see 1 bad thing and 1 good thing from this, actually. You can actually hear the strain whenever she first hits it and the tongue is not relaxed, and then the SECOND she relaxes that tongue and it lays flat (about 1:25), it releases and there is some spin and the sound is much more relaxed and less strained.

    • @docwitty516
      @docwitty516 9 лет назад +14

      That's because you were introduced to wicked from the album :p Idina got very popular very quickly with those who hadn't heard of her before hand after wicked, she did a few things before that, but her fame really skyrocketed after it. Immediately after she stopped doing elphaba she was asked to play Maureen in the rent movie because she was an original cast member. She also apperead on shows in between when she was maureen and elpheba but ultimately she became elpheba... the point is she either is tired of singing the songs over and over again, is busy with life, or you know just hasn't been asked to sing it lately. She did when you wish upon a star at the super bowl though so that was cool. And no I'm not following you just see your stuff on Google plus and for some reason need to comment on it XD

    lol the way the book tells, or so in the begininng when Nanny and Elphaba's mother are recalling, it is mentioned that a man gave Elphaba's mother a liquid in a green bottle, one which she kept, and then she couldn't remember anything else. This perhaps suggest that she was raped by this mysterious figure and therefore he is elphaba's father, but then again Elphaba's mother wasn't exactly the most loyal person to her husband.

      Add to this, even Nessarose isn't fully Frex's daughter either, because she was conceived due to a threesome between Frex, his wife and their mutual love interest Turtle Heart, whereby Nessa is more so Turtle Heart X Frex's wife's child than she is Frex's daughter, yet Nessa still gets preferential treatment over her green-skinned stepsister Elphaba, whose own biological father IS the charlatan Wizard.

  • @Currageify
    @Currageify 12 лет назад +2

    (i have yet to finish the book ) i was inclined to believe that this was indeed elphaba's father, mostly due to the musical's plot, but what confuses me is that toward the end of that little introduction chapters, in which elphaba is a child, elphaba seem's a terrible thing aproaching in a red ballon, a clear reference to the wizard, so this plot can't be relevant in the book can it? it wouldn't add up. I guess i'll have to wait till i get there lol

      Not spammed at all lol (4 years later ). Nobody cared what you thought obviously and I am sure Idina would not take offense to anything you had to say. I definitely don't share your opinion.

      Almost everything's different in the book though

      Not really. Elphie's still misunderstood and bitter. The Wizard is still her shamed humbug of a father. Madame Morrible is still the truly manipulative and wicked headmistress of Shiz University who conspires with The Wizard to get rid of all the sentient, talking Animals and anyone whom they perceive as going against their regime. Glinda is still an annoying dumb blond who forsakes friendship & fulfillment for popularity with the elite. The only major significant changes are that Nick Chopper is still the Tin [Woods]Man and not Boq, Nessarose has no arms instead of being confined to a wheelchair, literal diamond stud Fiyero as prince of the Vinkus (Winkie is a demeaning term used for enslavement written up by biased news sources to paint Elphie as evil) is not the Scarecrow, and both Fiyero and Elphie DIE FOR REAL in the book.
