  • 68% of people released from prison return within three years. But less than 1% of graduates from Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison ever return. By offering college degree programs, their mission is to give people the tools to turn their lives around and give back to their communities when released.

    Wow, the college program changed a 68% recidivism rate to a 1% recidivism rate. That's pretty impressive.

    Listen. My science education teacher is a small lady, and had been hired to teach inmates. All the other teachers and officers believed she wouldn't last a few weeks, and some made bets on their guesses. She never had a single fight, a single problem, nor a single argument. Why? She kept their hands occupied and minds churning. She told us this because she also teaches the Teaching Science class in my college and the one mistake teachers make is not entertaining the children while focused on a group of them and not the others. You need to have activites and fun for those kids who aren't in the group, otherwise you'll have trouble.

    I'm glad to get the chance to see this. I've known about the broken penitentiary systems around the world for a looong time. It's a cycle of incarceration in most cases. The Netherlands really changed it around - they have a system that works incredibly well. Education is an excellent start, but it doesn't stop here.

    Great video, only problem is that society, at least here in IL wants to keep you down. I had a high profile job in the military, people loved what I did and was able to help many folks. I had dignity and made a difference while earning almost $90K a year. I have 2 Master's degrees. Then 3 years ago I went to jail for 5 months. Now, I earn under $20K, even less last year. I've gone through my money for lawyers in appeals, trying to keep a roof over my head and food on the table. My friends have walked away and I'm about to loose everything. All I can get is a job as a cook (and even that's hard to get.) Forget being a counselor. I'd love to teach or work with the newly released, but that's a no-go. A priest-friend of mine with a PhD went to jail for financial stuff. He got a job as a pizza driver, but eventually he starved to death. Yup...no shit. Forget all the value that we have before hand; society says that my education, experience and potential are irrelevant. No wonder the suicide rate after prison is so high. Recidivism can be seen as the only way to stay alive, prison at least feeds you. Remember, when you get out, make good healthy connections - they're lifelines and will help keep you alive and hopeful.

      Dear Friend. You're right. Lose is a verb that means 'to fail to win, to misplace, or to free oneself from something or someone. Loose is an adjective that means 'not tight.'' You really had to go back in time to find something to troll, didn't you? That being said, I was tired and upset when I wrote this; you just went out of your way to be mean to someone whose story you know nothing of. I think I win on the high moral ground here. I will let you go back on the hunt for sadder people than you are while you sit on a couch in your mom's basement, eating potato chips and jerking off to Victoria's Secret catalogs. Oh, and I wrote a book about my experience and it hit #1 on Amazon in several categories. I've helped people with my story and started a conversation. What have you done with your life and mistakes?

    And if you're doing (serious) crime and tired of all the stress, usually the bad lifestyle etc.. Cash in on it somewhat literally. Beats going into big debt with student loans too.. There's autobody programs (restore old/classic cars!), science related, heavy equipment maintenance/operation, a number of serious good $$ professions, including law enforcement (not all agencies participate). The main thing is once into these things, ya have to be/stay clean, straight.. Any of you cons that do the heavy equipment, consider starting your own forklift op/safety school -There isn't any hands-on fork op. school that I know of.. Just a bunch of online stuff.. In bigger cities, there's usually places where you can buy used (fixer-upper) forklifts for $2k or less.. Lots of demand for fork operators, but nobody's operating hands-on use schools/classes to certify!..Start as a part-time "gig", then start adding other locations, franchise, etc..;Big skill difference between fork op. and big rig driving skills.. But lots of trucking schools..

Consider doing a group participation website, since there's different kinds (of art) and categories of artwork. Demand for fantasy. Demand for scientific illustrating, for portraiture/sketch-art realism, graphic design, concept illustration, and so on..Offer some limited-time free work to publishers, independent writers....

And they are getting the same accredited degree that is being payed for with my taxes.

    • @adamplentl5588
      @adamplentl5588 4 года назад +4

      Yeah I guess you're not looking at the bigger picture then. A low recidivism rate directly financially benefits you because you're already having to pay to keep prisoners locked up. And then on top of that the society as a whole is losing that individual in the form of a loss of individual tax revenue, which again equals higher taxes for you. An expanded education program for inmates financially benefits everyone. Moreover though, education should be free and the issue of student debt is kind of a separate issue.
