  • Hamish Brewer is a born motivator. The New Zealander with an infectious energy served as principal of Occoquan Elementary, a school serving a large low-income and immigrant community. His unique leadership approach turned Occoquan from a struggling school with sagging test scores into one of the best schools in the state. Now, he’s in his first year at a new school, tasked with spearheading the same transformation he led at Occoquan. Can he replicate his remarkable success at Fred Lynn Middle School? Watch our documentary to see this relentless principal in action.

Mr. Brewer is very energetic and serious about reversing the attitudes of staleness in schools. Change will definitely be the rule now at Fred Lynn MS. When a principal can get teachers excited about teaching again; with new ways of thinking and sharing that is the start of a revolution within the hearts and minds of our children today. Move FORWARD and BE THAT CHANGE! I am GLAD for FRED LYNN MS.

My school is kind of like this. The vice principal will come around to different classes and hang out with us, we call all of our teachers by their first names, we’re actually friends with our teachers, we have connections with them, they try to understand us and I love it so much

Wow. This actually made me cry. What an incredible story and man. I was very privileged growing up but our school was very diverse and I remember friends saying how little support they felt they had and how the school systems were designed to focus more energy into students who already have advantages that put them closer to colleges/career opportunities. This is amazing, hopefully more educators will watch this and incite change at their schools

"If no one told you today that they loved you.. Mr Brews loves you." Oh my GOD. Knowing how many people needed to hear that. Knowing how many KIDS needed to hear that-- because they come from tragedy. The hope being put back into the school, the love going into it.. But those words, that sentence.. I hope he says something similar every day. I love that so much. So many people need it. Even the teachers, I'm sure.

Every teacher should be interviewed by him, every school set up by his standards.
It's the parents job to shape their child, and many fail, and at this age group they can still be shaped and nurtured to be better. If every teacher, every school, took a leaf from his book, the next generation would be much improved.

The establishment is stuck in the old school tradition.
They were training us to be factory drones in the 19th century and into the 20th. They can't or they refuse to rap their minds around a relevant and modern paradigm.
What he is doing is not new, but there is often so much resistance from the establishment.

As a freshman who went to Fred Lynn for all three years, I just gotta say that nothing's changed at all. Didn't really care about the eighth graders at all. Everything's stayed the same except for a couple of murals. Heck, now they even have a brand new gym. All of the "new and improved" installments happened once all of the eighth graders left.

Really? Steve Jobs with Dr. King... in the same sentence. One of the greatest civil rights activists who ever lived, and the obscenely rich guy who figured out how to make a gadget appeal to the masses, just casually tossed out as though there isn't a massive disparity of greatness there? I mean, why not Tesla instead of Jobs. An actual super genius, who did nothing but selflessly pursue science in an attempt to provide free unmeterable electricity to everyone and invented the foundations of modern industry. Jobs' only real talent was reading the market and directing engineers to a kind of impressive end. I mean, I wouldn't be caught dead with an apple product, but it has it's market. Oh, and building a massive cult of personality, so there's that.

I love our school but I think that they tend to "box" the kids in! Limiting them! As much as he is a GREAT principal... he really needs to be teaching others about how to be a principal. Instead of affecting one school at a time...start affecting the NATION.
