  • Can you imagine what it is like facing a 200 year prison sentence? Join Shaun Attwood, a former stock-market millionaire and Ecstasy supplier turned public speaker, author and activist, as he describes what it was like to end up in Arizona’s deadliest jail and most importantly, what his shocking experience has taught him about happiness in life.
Shaun Attwood is a former stock-market millionaire and Ecstasy supplier turned public speaker, author and activist, who is banned from America for life.
Shaun’s writing - smuggled out of the jail with the highest death rate in America run by Sheriff Joe Arpaio - attracted international media attention to the human rights violations: murders by guards and gang members, dead rats in the food, cockroach infestations…
While incarcerated, Shaun was forced to reappraise his life. He read over 1,000 books in just under six years. By studying original texts in psychology and philosophy, he sought to better understand himself and his past behaviour. He credits books as being the lifeblood of his rehabilitation.
Shaun now tells his story to schools to put young people off drugs and crime. He campaigns against injustice via his books and blog, Jon’s Jail Journal. He has appeared on the BBC, Sky News and TV worldwide to talk about issues affecting prisoners’ rights.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I don't know the cruel details of what he went through only by the snippets of content I hear in this video. And speaking to people is nerve-wracking at the best of times. I just got to watch this talk today. Came across his story a month ago via UniLad when watching docus on the rave scene in the UK. His story was suggested. Didn't realize until recently he has his own podcasts. Now I understand his podcasts better knowing his history. And it takes guts to admit to wrongdoing and to try and protect others.

Hi Shaun. Well done for getting through that. That was truly horrific to say the least but your attitude changed for the better. Sometimes we need a good shock to put us on the right road.

This prison sounds like it came straight from the 1600s

This would be mild in that time period. They had much more horrific torture methods than cockroaches, and they implemented them.

I watch Shaun's RUclips channel! I didn't know that he was a successful stockbroker living the party life before prison. Such an interesting man. Thanks for sharing buddy.

I have personally had this experience where my mouth completely dries out and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. That happens if I am feeling maximum anxiety when I’m being challenged about something dear to me. Shaun is revealing things about prison that most of the population do not know.

Yes bringing back traumatic events in my life makes me dizzy, like I'm going to pass out. We all are forced to relive things that we share. Not easy.

The saddest story he tells about prison, its such a miracle plus blessing to hear you tell it now. My sadness is that PEOPLE are still in there. So inspirational!

reminds me of the time I was in the hospital all broke up from a motorcycle accident. I woke up to others who had the same condition but with different circumstances, and that is what humbled me. I took the risk, some people don't. but we all ended up in the same place
