  • Time to check out yet another fun little Wargames Atlantic kit.
The Cannon Fodder are part of WGA's "Death Fields" line of scifi fighters slugging it out for the spectacle of a bunch of alien overlords, and as such are a hodgepodge of conventional scifi ideas brought forth in plastic.
These are just poor sods in jumpsuits stuck in a situation they didn't ask to be in, and as such are trying to make the best of it. They're very minimally equipped and it shows.
But that's half the fun of these guys! With the included heads you can have them be used in all sorts of gaming rolls! When you start mixing in your own bits even more so with these guys!
Best part is they've proved to be popular enough to already have a female version announced for future release as well!
You can find out more about them here-

These"generic" boxes are really a game changer in our hobby, with plastic's flexibility you can do pratically anything. Luckyly these figures seems compatible with Stargrave's ones, allowing infinite customizations, also with GS' help!

Most of the Wargames Atlantic kits seem to be compatable with Stargrave and Frostgrave if your looking for an easier way to genre mix I would reccomend it, he did a really great job of showing what I mean with the squad at the end. Hope that helps and you have fun!

@@ObscuritiesinMiniature particularly useful when you show scope for kitbashing as we all now have excess Stargrave and Oathmark sprues etc which are different size to GW I reckon. Bit smaller usually. Love both and friends but I don’t reckon they are always compatible.

I've retired all of my GW guard plans and replaced them with my own interpretation of guardsmen which consist entirely of WA units from many boxes. At first I created my own army/ranks based on the different kits they have (so for example an Eisenhorn platoon I'd treat like a tank platoon of 4-5 troops, while a cannon fodder platoon is one box of them) and just started getting creative with the storytelling. In the process I discovered a lot of great tabletop games as alternatives to "the big boys" and now I'm assembling my own rag-tag crew and slowly making up my own worlds, rules and ideas for the troops I have. Very inspiring kits! Amazing quality from a great company.

When those creative energies get rolling and people start thinking outside the parameters of someone else's game I think are the best gaming moments.
Glad you're having fun with your army! Time to send them on a trip through Five Parsecs from Home or something!

Totally would be a great choice for starting with. Nice and solid color choices if they want to paint those jumpsuits, or if you want to get fancy and do camo schemes, it would look pretty awesome. Plus with the expansion boxes and 3d printable option parts, you've got a wide variety of pieces to get creative with before even dipping into your collective bits boxes!

The customisability is really cool! And it's great that there are femme body options coming also. I recently got a bunch of cyberpunk bits from Anvil Industry and a starter box of Necromunda Eschers and I'm looking forward into making something unique with the squad.
(And I absolutely initially thought Squid Game upon seeing the jumpsuits. A Battle Royale setup as a wargame makes a whole lot of sense, honestly)

  • @wulfric1232

I bought a couple of sprues of these to use as penal troops. The heads with shock collars didn't fit well until I carved away the collar of the jumpsuit, otherwise the heads sat way too high. Don't think it would be an issue with the other heads. A couple of the arms didn't fit smoothly either. I don't think they're quite as nice as some other Wargames Atlantic figures, but they're a hugely versatile and budget-friendly option for anything where you need loads of grunts.

I can’t wait to get my hands on these guys. I have so many crazy kitbash plans. And I’m hoping to use the masked heads on the Eisenkern to tone down their space reich vibe.
As for V, I remember being really into it when it aired, but after the gerbil scene my grandmother decided it was too scary. Then, during my formative years, V became one of those “keep your eyes open, it’s only a matter of time” videos we were shown regularly in our community, along with the Wave documentary and the Herman Wouk miniseries about the war. Still get a dark chuckle with other persons of a similar upbringing over what we thought was the over-the-too hate on scientists. Freakin scientists!

Now that I'm seeing the helmeted figure in action, with the backpack and whatnot, I'm getting the impression these guys could be used even in Zona Alfa. Some modern-esque mercenaries, venturing into The Zone, looking to scavenge and collect artifacts. Might need to replace their laser rifles with modern weapons, though you can cannibalize those easily from most historical kits from the previous century. (The autogun/shotgun weapons from the forthcoming Death Fields upgrade sprue may also be useful for this).
My personal idea for using the Cannon Fodder was as an Imperial Guard regiment fashioned after the old Paranoia roleplaying game. The different unit types color-coded in the style of Alpha Complex security clearance. Conscripts are Red, Infantry squads are Orange, Veterans are Yellow, Command Squads are Green, and Company Commanders are Blue. With other unit types falling into one of those levels, as seems appropriate (a Platoon Commander would be Green, for ex).
I'd call them the Paranoian Troubleshooters, an army of clones from a planet on the fringe of Imperium space that falls under the control of an insane AI. The Imperium either doesn't know an Abominable Intelligence is operating in their space, or the Paranoia Complex is too useful (for raw materials, exotic finished goods, and clones) to want to stir the pot over. Especially when it's so far on the edge, where Imperial forces need all the help they can get. Doesn't stop groups like the Adeptus Mechanicus or the Inquisition wanting to investigate, which would justify all sorts of conflicts. (That, and the fact that the Complex's deeper tunnels play home to all manner of Chaos and Genestealer cult activity, and Paranoia itself is a planet in proximity to all manner of external threats). The Troubleshooters would be kept busy indeed, whether on Paranoia or shipped out to some Imperial warzone.
