- If you don't like the way things are.... Start a town.
It sometime seems as if things are grim and change could just never come about in the places where we live. With extreme divide in our government, a broken food system and environmental degradation continuously getting worse, what can we possibly do to change things? I say, start an ecological community with all of your favorite people in the most ideal climate where conscious choice and intentional design are integral to your decision making. I will guide you on my journey in Costa Rica in creating community on a crystal clear river with deep pools where dripping fruit trees line the roads and neighbors care about each other and are dedicated to improving our world.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Imperative that more people aim to live this way.
We are building an intentional community in La Esperanza de Turrialba. A town of our own, with people we want to be with. Been here 7 years now....
We are currently creating a tiny house eco village in Osteen Florida. I can't wait to build many more and hopefully leave behind a legacy that will benefit future generations.
Sun Shine do you have a website?
Yes we are on FB or check out at www.paintitgreen.org . We are linked on there as well : )
five years now. how did things turn out?
In Florida it is illegal to be off grid but I hope you all are doing okay you should definitely put yourselves in the WE Network with Wanderers end if you are a contributionism resource-based economy style Village
Only 50 plus comments on this and it’s been 8 years... There are about to be more views and comments on videos like this. The movement is happening.
O ooo this talk got me all fired up!!! I would love to live in a community like that!!
This is soooo inspirational and the energy of this guy is just contagious!
I’m planning on building my own intentional community and this is just great!
I didn't know that this was what I've been dreaming of doing until I found this video!! This is what I would do if I was able and now that I've seen this I'm even more motivated.
Stephen, this is really beautiful. I'd love to connect with you and discuss our current urban intentional community project.
Super inspirational talk! I personally resonate with the concept of designing our daily living to embrace more quality and intimate human interactions.
Brilliant, very inspirational, you've given me some great ideas ~ thanks
Ayye represent north miami Great talk!
I hear so many awesome things about Spain... I need to go
This is excellent! I have added it to my playlist for inspiration in creating our "Family Compound". LOL
Honestly:
I wish I had been born in your family. Having my Mom or Dad go to Burning Man with me would be unbelievably rad! My family is nothing like that. And I can't "paint it exactly how I want it". I get the family I got, and I need all the inspiration and support possible to get them to even listen to this plan, much less like it.
Blessings.
any resources on how to deal with scapegoating or narcissism in intentional communities or cohousing land?
Great speech and great job:) thank you for sharing. I would love to learn more about the process and how you deal with practical challenges. Is there any blog you could recommend? Thank you in advance!
Love!!
fantastic video! we're looking to set something like this up in New Zealand! Amazingly place, but poorly designed, we believe it can change for the better!
Do you have a link for more information about your project in NZ. I am doing the same, let's connect! Rieki.cordon@gmail.com
Hey dude. How's it going down there? You know that you guys are now a continent right? The 8th continent was discovered last year, mostly underwater. Zealandia bitches! You took our crown as the smallest continent. Lucky we can still beat you at cricket!
Bryan - it sounds like he did what you are suggesting. He built his community in the community in which he grew up, using the ideas and inspiration from the other communities he visited!
I like the question. Perhaps the power is in the question more than the answer?
Great show, Stephen!
I thought permaculture was permanent agriculture, not permanent culture. There is s distinction. What do you say?
I heard there were no indigenous in but Costa Rica--your experience is different?
Enjoyed this Thank you!!
I need this!
Bravo 👏
Dos Bocas de Aguirre Puntarenas tiene agua a montones y una comunidad con 14 casas.
does anybody know the name of the community he talks about in NYC?
how is this community now, 2020 how to join , whats the cost of joining, ,,,,,,
What is the purpose of an intentional community consultant?
The sign behind him says something about Black Rock City. Was this at Burning Man?
Sorry. I must stop asking questions until the end of the video. The guy just said at about 14:15 that he's at Burning Man.
Where? Tell me pls ..
neat! - any of these communities in British Columbia's coast?
Yes, there are these communities in British Columbia
sei un figo!!!
New word!
"Squirmish!"
Hola Steve!
I Love the video! Thank you. But, what about building these communities closer to where you were born/ grew up!? Buying land in developing and third world countries makes for a higher potential that market prices will go up and locals will not have access to the land. I am sure that having an education center like Stephen's CR ecovillages benefits the locals a lot too, but how many people see this and think 'cheap land in tropical paradise'? How about doing this is the communities where we live!
Clearly you haven’t been to south FL or Miami-Dade county… it’s over-developed, over-populated, and not an ideal place to create an intentional village that’s as healthy as CR. But as he mentioned many other friends of his are also creating creative communities around the US.
This is both true and not true.
He's clearly not a dictator. That's silly.
However, making it the way HE wants it is not community either.
How do we bridge the two realities of having a singular, clear and high quality vision and having connected, bonding, community participation?
What is your solution?
once a community is big enough , creating a council would suffice?
🌸♥️
Wait, so, okay--so it's not okay to ship & export food, but it's okay to do the same if it's bringing trees to plant in your community? The reality is that not everyone, not most, can begin to even think about a down payment on a community that they own outright & autonomous. I liked the sentiment behind the talk but it was presented in this unrealistic self-righteous way...
Thanks for your comment... I think constantly shipping food to meet our dietary needs is much different than bringing seeds or trees and then growing your food. I'm sorry that you thought it came off as self righteous. Certainly wasn't my goal. Many people that live in our community did sweat equity and in another one that I started people put $2500 down and pay $134 monthly for 20 years. So its actually a lot more realistic financially than you may think. The hard part is breaking the chains from the system that holds us captive.
Colonization.
Wtf?
Investors?? Profit? Sounds like a mini corporation. He is a trust fund baby.
OMG!!! ALL 4 THINGS - SOOOO DEMONIC!!! JUST THE WORST. 🙄
LOL. Americans discovering what they've been doing in Europe for 1000 years.
He talks like Trump.
