I wish I knew that sooner. It would have made things a whole lot easier! In this video I share my tips from my future self to my past self with you.

Thanks for incorporating the titles into the b-roll! It’s much better especially cause your b-roll is so good and you show SO many games.
Those were some good tips! You hinted at one of my tips when you mentioned your friend owns an edition you want to play. Knowing what games exist in your group can be useful. I find usually my friend who owns a game probably wants an excuse to play it which can save me on the purchase.
Also, like that tip, and like your expansion pack tip another question I often ask is “yes this looks perfect for me, but will anyone else like it?” That’s not a hard and fast rule, as it’s YOUR hobby and YOUR money so buy what makes you happy…but what’s sad is when you have a game no one else is interested in playing with you. (Euroy Euros like Lowlands is like this to me. I wanna play it SO bad but no one else seems to want to do it sits on my shelf, taunting me.) that’s why I opt for games that can solo so often.

Getting sucked into expansions you'll never play is such a real thing. However, your example of Cities and Knights is my one exception. I can't play Catan without it now because I can usually tell who will win a base game of Catan by round 3, and then it just gets borning. Cities and Knights keeps things interesting all the way through.

At least Twilight Struggle do not take up that much physical space so you've got that going for you. Which is nice.

I spotted Glow on your shelf. It's a fun little game but I wish the expansion would hurry up and come out already.

I've been very lucky in that one of my friends was already deep into the hobby and had hundreds of games by the time I was introduced to modern board gaming. Thanks to playing some of his collection I was able to learn what I did and didn't like mechanic wise, and have been able to avoid much in the way of accidental bad purchases (bad for me). I've also tried to be good about trying games out before I buy (even digitally), out at least doing a ton of research first. But Kickstarters were absolutely a trap I fell in over the pandemic and they're arriving and OMG did I have no real clue how much space they'd take up. 😅 Let's just say I'm buying a lot less now.

Very good advice I need to follow lol. I definitely suffer from overspending and buying expansions for games I'm excited to try but haven't played.
Funny you mention Yokohama, the new edition coming out to retail next year looks really promising.

Well, I used to have a very large collection of Avalon Hill games. I grew up primarily as a wargamer. Eventually to save space and to adjust to my changing life situation, I went strictly to computer games. Now that Im old, I decided to build my boardgame collection back. My, how things have changed! So many new mechanics! Some I love, some, not so much. Unfortunately, I spent a lot of money on games I did not understand, nor did they match what I thought they were going to be like. Trial and error, for sure. I wish I knew more about modern games before taking the plunge. Oh...I DO have some great ones though. Thanks for your video

Spot on. Your right. I wish I had seen this 12 months ago. Collecting is whole psychology. Why do we collect.? Very interesting. By the way you seem to have a fantastic collection. Love them on the floor. This is part of your life that you will look back on. A new hobby may come along , you might move sell them all and when your 50 start buying them again. Good luck.

Good advice here Danny and also very relatable ending about the power of persuasion when a friend or family member gives commentary on a game that I showed them!

Dude, your video is so very useful. I am not new to board games but have come back to the hobby after years away and damn if most of what you say in your video reaches touches a nerve. I dragged my wife into board games after re-joining board games and she is getting into games too. Great video, honest, clear, helpful. Keep up the good work man.

    Hey friends
Are you new to modern board gaming or are you an experienced gamer who has been playing board games for a long time?
What are some things you WISH you knew? Or if you are new, what are some things you would like to know more about?
This is a safe space to share your stories and experiences.
    Cheers
    Danny :)

Even if you like the game, make sure you can find the people to play it with rather than forcing it on people for whom it isn't their cup of tea.

Pretty new to the hobby and learning about Board Game Arena was a game-changer for me. Getting to try out games and having access to them digitally helps remove some of that consumer pressure to buy them all.

Yes! The strict budget really helps me to hold my buying impulse down. I have to think 10+ times before buying a game.
About expansions though, it depends whether if I need it or I feel it will make the base game better or not. I love Oh My Goods story expansion, but I resist to buy Little Town : Artisans expansion because uh... it looks like it will only make the (already simple-but-solid) gameplay more convoluted.

Which game is that at the end with the wooden animal tokens? I really enjoy and play often, the ones with such stuff, like Everdell, Parks and even Via Nebula ( needs an expansion, tho).

I don't mind some extra setup but when a game has way too many things going on and too many pieces it takes away from the fun. When you will easily forget a rule then it ruins the game.

If your library system or a friend has a game, then there is probably no reason to buy the game.
If you already have a similar game, do you need a new one? Do you want you and your friends to have to learn a new game?
Great budgeting ideas, but don't forget to budget your time. Are you really going to find time to play that new game?
Very true about limiting your exposure to the hobby. Try picking only your top 3 channels and websites. Unsubscribe from the others and delete those bookmarks. Unless you are always looking for new perspectives, then you'll want to rotate which ones.

Oh boy, the part on the power of suggestion hit home for me. When I first got Modern Art, I had two instances of it not being right for the crowd. Played it with two separate groups and in both, the winners did a bunch of math to make all the right bids and ultimately won. But both of them felt very meh about the game. Those comments made me skip over Modern Art on many a game day, until recently when it so happened that the winner of one group couldn’t make it. Took the chance to table Modern Art again since the player count fit and we had a blast! Can’t believe I nearly considered selling it
