SPINOFF Board Games, Do we need them?

  • With so many spinoff board games based on popular games like star wars, dune, scythe and wingspan. Board games like dune uprising and wyrmspan are simply games that capture an audience who is already invested in a particular game. Enticing them to expand their palate and reaching out for fans of the same IP such as Lord of the Rings is something that might warrant a spinoff board game. But what are the ingredients that make up a great spinoff board game? In this video we delve into this issue of whether spinoff games have a place on our board game shelves or whether we should just stick to the originals.
In this video I do a Wyrmspan vs Wingspan comparison.

An additional perspective that publishers (and the community) also needs to consider is that of newer players. I think Danny is right to point out that for those of us in the hobby, we have to make decisions about every game we buy about whether we have room on our shelf (and really, the time to play) both, as non-spinoff games also have similar arcs, mechanics, and themes that will overlap. However, newer players are always coming into the hobby, and they don't own any of these games - so for those players, they aren't deciding if they want to buy Wingspan and Wyrmspan, they're deciding if they want to buy either (or any other game). I think it's especially useful for people looking to introduce or further invite friends and family into board gaming to have more options to find one that better appeals to the target audience.
I can offer insight specifically about the Wyrmspan design and development (I've commented on Danny's videos before, but I'm Connie Vogelmann's spouse). There is a lot posted already in FAQs, design diaries, and forums, but the short story is that Stonemaier receives a high volume of requests for Wingspan reskins, and Jamey Stegmaier doesn't feel like a strict reskin is an option the company wants to engage in. So he asked Connie to design Wyrmspan after her success in designing Apiary.

G'day Danny! Great content as always!
I would argue that no game is necessary. None. Our hobby (and we commonly forget this) is a hobby of luxury. I have always despised the phrase "cash grab" because publishers are businesses first and artists second. Every publisher WANTS to make a great game, but every publisher also NEEDS to make money to survive.
Often, I feel I like a game. Rarely, I feel I love a game. Almost never do I hate a game. Most of the time, I do feel a few tweaks should have been made to a game, which is why I love spin off games. Despite what our game shelf and organizing a game night tell us, there are more people than games. If a spinoff of a game turns one more person into a gamer, I say bring in more spinoffs!

6:50 there is a bit of a dangerous simplification here, and a lot ot tears have been shed by people thinking Horizons is a family weight version of the game. There is nothing simplified with Horizons of Spirit Island compared to Spirit Island. It's the exact same game, without the possibility for higher difficulty play.

The retheme of Terra Mystica to Gaia Project gave me my favourite game so I can't complain.

    G'day friends
I hope you are all well. This is a topic that has often appeared on my radar especially when I own the original game. Are Spinoff board games or even reimplemented versions of a board game necessary? Do both the original and new or spinoff game have a space on our already crowded board game shelves? Which would you prefer to play, the original or the spinoff versions? There is so much to discuss! Please share your stories and opinions below. I would love to hear them. This is a safe space to share and talk! Cheers Danny :)

Great Video! I recently played Wingspan with 7 and actually loved it because of the turn order wheel that allows simultaneous play. Turns never feel overly long because each player has the same amount of time to think through their turns before their time is up which is great (except for when it comes to food)

Above and below . Near and far . These are both expentions and stand alone games. Also Great. Like they expand the Story and Mechanics are different. Not sure i could get rid of one if i had 2.

These aren't spin-offs, though. All are completely different games with a completely different look and feel. They just share a worker placement mechanic.

One good reason to consider a reimplemented game is if the new version fixes problems with the original game. With respect to Wingspan/Wyrmspan, one problem I have with Wingspan is the way they implement player interaction. The pink-stripe cards are a clumsy mechanism for player interaction. Player interaction is good, so I think simply removing the pink-stripe cards from the game is not a solution. But the problem with those cards is the fact that the game is largely multi-player solitare as mentioned in the video-- but with the pink cards, each player has to carefully monitor what the other players are doing in order to determine if the condition of the card is triggered-- you can't expect other players to watch out for your special conditions. But we've found that it's too easy to forget that the condition is in effect, it requires paying additional detailed attention to what other players are doing, and often that does not happen-- it is certainly not automatic, and many times it gets overlooked. It requires an extra level of concentration that detracts from the enjoyment of the game IMHO. So I was looking forward to Wyrmspan as it was billed as "fixing problems in Wingspan". I'm not sure that it actually does that though, so I'm not planning to buy it just yet. Player interaction is good, but if you have to distract your concentration on your own play progress with concern with the details of other players actions, concern that is otherwise unnecessary and can be taxing, I'd say it's poorly implemented. Does Wyrmspan fix that problem? I don't know, and until and unless I do, I'll likely not be buying it.

As someone who closely follows Stonemaier Games, I can say with about 99.9% certainty that Wyrmspan was never "billed as fixing the problems of Wingspan". With regard to Pink Powers specifically, Jamey Stegmaier did state that they chose not to include them because they created a lot of rules questions for Wingspan. They wanted to avoid that with Wyrmspan.
I have the opposite opinion as you regarding pink powers. In my Wyrmspan review, I wrote that I actually missed pink power interactions and I think this dynamic is a great target for an expansion. They add more tactical depth to the game.

@@Wingsplain Good to know, thanks. Does leave one question though, did they find a alternative way to include player interaction? My issue is not with player interaction, but the way it's implemented in Wingspan.

      @Wingsplain 20 дней назад +2

@@Syncopator It's been a bit since I played but I feel like there is less interaction than Wingspan. Interaction does exist in the Dragon Guild track in that you want to be the first one to the best spaces for the best rewards. This creates a tension between the players. The shared experience of Wyrmspan is a fun one. There aren't any "take that" mechanics in the game.

You have some really good points. Reskining a game. I though about doing it for some existing ones. Just to get certin friends of family interested. Wing span is a good example . I was not the biggest fan of ""birds"" and when friends keep saying play it play it. I really like the mechanics have please heeps. But i all ways think like if this was Dinos or pokemon something else. Using same mechanic/engie . would it be better or hit the table More!. Still Wondering and can't do dragons family against it beleiving they evil.

These are good points. But I do feel like there is a line being blured between spin off and a reimplementation, and are some of these points not a problem if it's one or the other? I think it would be fair to say that a reimplementation is ment to use the same mechanics with at most minor diferences because it's not trying to be a differt game. While a spin off might want to change things a lot and maybe even keep only the theme because it is trying to be something different hence the spin-off
