Why we need gender-neutral bathrooms | Ivan Coyote

- There are a few things that we all need: fresh air, water, food, shelter, love ... and a safe place to pee. For trans people who don't fit neatly into the gender binary, public restrooms are a major source of anxiety and the place where they are most likely to be questioned or harassed. In this poetically rhythmic talk, Ivan Coyote grapples with complex and intensely personal issues of gender identity and highlights the need for gender-neutral bathrooms in all public places.

+anonymous person lol!! Sadly true
Me too!
same here
Yuntha_21 we are the same person😹
I didn't use school bathroom for first 8 years of school
+Patrik Banek how do you go for 7 hours without peeing?
+havingMC By holding it in...
+havingMC You just don't.
ThatOneJay123 I know that, but at some point his body would force him or his muscles would just give up.
+havingMC Or you just have a restroom pattern like normal people...Peeing is no different than pooping. The less fluids you consume, the less you pee. If you don't drink a bunch before bed, you aren't going to have trouble not peeing for 8 hours while you sleep. Same with 7 hours at school.
The problem w this argument is protection of one group leads to lack of protection for another. If we pass a law that makes bathrooms gender neutral then we loose precedent to prevent peepers from doing their preferred activity hence we loose the ability to protect a majority from a minority. Gender neutral bathroom laws only protect a minority and it protects them merely from their own sense of discomfort. If given the choice I'd rather have laws that protect a majority of people from a minority like peepers and perverts because that's a much more violating offense. And this has nothing to with transphobia. I support the LGBT community and I'm very open minded so let's not make the false assumption that people who oppose these gender neutral bathroom laws do so because they are bigoted or transphobic. When it comes to private businesses I think they should be allowed to have whatever bathroom policy they want and if they want gender neutral bathrooms that should be their prerogative.
Sexual predators will be no more encouraged by the accommodation of trans people. You're just looking for an excuse to be hateful. Educate yourself before you open your mouth or put your fingers on a keyboard again.
+Michael Kras Hey what do you know...the straw man argument...accuse the opposition of being hateful because they don't agree with your political agenda. Lol
+Dallas Duff what political agenda? Equal rights for all humans? Wow, what's a concept. That's really gonna break the earth.
+Michael Kras A. Just because you disagree with a position doesn't mean you should misrepresent it. And B. To think this is a civil rights issue is kinda absurd. Do you honestly think I should have the civil right to use the women's restroom?
"What about the ugly girl with self esteem problems? Or the short boy? Or ... Wouldn't a safe private bathroom help everyone?" No. We're all helped by confronting the annoying reality of ourselves. I have obnoxious back hair. People see it when I get changed in the gym and aren't kind about it. Old dudes have balls that hang to the floor. You seem to think that those of us against your "solution" haven't thought these things through - we have. Women have a right to feel uncomfortable around you if you use their bathroom. Why again, is it horrible to go into a stall in the men's room? Oh RIGHT, because that makes _you_ uncomfortable. So your solution is to have $1,000s of dollars to be spent to inefficiently create _places to piss_ so we can tend to _your_ discomfort above some one elses. Nah, far better is the world where we realize we're all different and we all are uncomfortable --and we shouldn't expect the world to bend to us, but for us to be confident enough to deal with the consequences of living in reality.
+FREEDO Pretty spot on, this is a pretty slippery slope of a topic, but I guess some people think being selfish and self-centered is the correct way to act.
+FREEDO That last sentence wrecks most of this hyper PC bullshit
+FREEDO "safe place to pee" "Safe" safe.. You're thinking these people are selfish? It's not just about trans people being "uncomfortable" about being in a certain place, it's that people could harass you in whichever bathroom you choose..
Did you even watch it? It's even really explicitly said 2:40 - 3:36 "Then using the men's room won't be a legal option for me either"
She shares the anecdote with the girl "The kids at school were harassing her when she tried to use the girl's bathroom, and the teacher had already instructed her to stay out of the boy's bathroom"
Honestly I think it was a mistake by the speaker to make the relation between low self-esteem issues and trans issues.. Because there's these people that worry about not being able to go to any bathrooms, random acts of violence and hatred towards them, then there's gonna be pretty normal people like you who say it's just the same as how they have weird back hair, and 'I suck it up so they should suck it up too'..
Making too much of a connection can make people think that they -actually experience the same thing- when it's really not..
***** Grow up in a poor community (in America, not to mention a 3rd world _toilet_ [pun intended]) and realize that this "gender identity toilet issue" is a joke at worst or at best _yet another thing_ compared to everyone else's issues in the world. This is a rich white issue.
AS IF, kids know the difference between "using the wrong bathroom" and "that kid is fat" -- kids are horrible regardless, I'm not debating that for a reason, I'm addressing the solution, the "we must demand individual gender-neutral stalls" _that'll fix bullying!_ no. That's a chainsaw to fix a problem fit for a scalpel. Just because something sucks, doesn't mean "something different" will indefinately be better than _what we have now_ you actually have to put your thinking cap on and weigh the options, not let immediate emotions cloud judgement.
Far better to realize, _everyone_ will be bullied and your argument is that we need to _tell them_ to feel worse about it than _everybody else_. Why? To please yourself actually. Every single one of us can't fully observe the suffering of another _you are the one_ (without evidence mind you) to imply that their suffering deserves special attention above someone else's (let's not even address the fact that suffering isn't a zero sum game anyway), far better is solidarity among the human race than to pick and choose who's oppression deserves more attention. -Wait, "oppression" ? Like most SJW issues, if this your _main issue_ you're fine.
Also, if private businesses want to "solve this issue" themselves, or if enough people voice this concern / market preference that companies want to bend to it - fine. I won't stop you. But don't be so selfish to demand the government flex and _force_ this concept down everyone's throat. This isn't like _blacks use separate water fountains_ there is a serious safety issue and a lot of scientific grey area on "gender identity." People have just as much right to be weirded out by trans people and trans people have the right to "identify" as whatever.
***** Can you be my mentor?
In all seriousness I wish I could articulate the bullshit that is this "issue" the way you are doing right now, if I tried it would probably take me an hour just to write something like you just did.
This is why a LOT of stores now have "family restrooms" in addition to their typical mens and womens rooms. Dad needs to take his four-year-old daughter? Family restroom. Trans person doesn't want to show off man parts in the ladies room? Family restroom. It's not the ideal solution everywhere, but given the small relative population most trans people can be served with this simple addition.
In 50 years, people are going to look at this youtube comment section with shock and disdain.
+Cherry.Bakewell So sad they don't do already now... :( I am really shocked about the amount of hate here!
+Cherry.Bakewell Yes because this was just such a SENSATIONAL talk. It will go down in the history books as one of the defining moments of the sjw rights movement, and will be looked back upon by our descendants for decades to come.
Ooooooooorrrr none of that will happen because this was pointless and kind of bullshit and no one will watch this a week after it was posted.
Patchy Ivan is not an SJW as Ivan is actually doing something, strongly believes in what they says and are talking about an issue that directly affects them.
People are now using the term sjw to attack anybody who has an opinion they disagree with.
Listen to others talking and be respectful. Even if they say something you disagree with instead of writing these people off as sjws.
Patchy Because people aren't allowed the ability of self-identification? Ivan wants to people to refer to them as 'them' so I will respect that and use it. It's not to be politically correct but to respect a person by fulfilling their wishes. It doesn't cause me to go out of my way, so why shouldn't I respect them?
Yep.. Imagine if we had youtube comments before black people were allowed to use "white only" bathrooms.. And some one made a video called "why we need multi-race bathrooms"... While I think this idea is extreme, because disabled bathrooms are like, everywhere, and nothing stops anyone, including trans people from using them, as far as I know.. Eventually I can see us living in a world with gender-neutral bathrooms, and I can't see it being a problem.. People are crying "OMG RAPE", but I could swear studies have shown gender neutral bathrooms are SAFER because in female-only bathrooms men can just walk in and rape everyone, with no men to help the women. /rant

@@seanw3792Yea and increase the chance for predators and perverts being in the same vicinity as women in a vulnerable state. Just create an alternate restroom. Why make them all gender neutral?
If it's single stall (i.e. one toilet per room, not multiple stalls in one room), then I'm certainly fine with it in principle. No idea how much more expensive it is compared to the multi-stall layout.
Thats a good idea because sometimes they are many men in the line and sometimes there are many women in line that way they can use all the available toilets
Like seriously, most places I go to with that much demand primarily smell of human impatience .. want to get in, do the business and get out as soon as possible.

I really don't understand why all the uproar on this video like... Why would you be so against something that will only help people? It's such a tiny thing to ask? Man this is sad I thought Ted talks were a place of smarter thinking
It's not helping ppl at all. It's giving 0.001% of the human population privilege's. Its' taking away safe spaces for ppl who were abused. I had a friend who had a full on panic attack in a gender neutral bathroom because a man walked in. It brought back all that trauma.
There should be men, women, and family bathrooms. Or men, women, and x. or something like that. It's not fair to force 99.99% of the population to cater to the 0.001%...it's insane....

I'm fine with transgenders. I'm not okay with them trying to impose their views on others. Men and women sharing public restrooms is not only incredibly awkward, it's potentially incredibly dangerous.
+Alexander Breems I think the video is about adding a different "unisex" bathroom to the already existing male and female ones... which a lot of developed countries already have...
+Alexander Breems 50 years ago, people said this about combining bathrooms for black and white people. Food for thought.
+MexicoNativeAmerican I would be willing to bet my life savings that if women were allowed to join the national football league, 1, MAYBE 2 would get signed to a team as a kicker or something, and it would be mostly as a gimmick. In fact I'm all for the Nfl doing something like that. It's not like it would change anything, since no woman would be able to handle herself in the Nfl, and it would help to shut up some stupid feminist bullshitters who think it's about sexism rather than skill, speed and strength.
+MexicoNativeAmerican - LOL let them? Ok, get 50 of the best female football players, have as many on the field as u want and I'll pick 5 guys who will beat them.
hey, I live in France and (thank god) a lot of the public restrooms are gender-neutral and I HAVE NEVER heard about someone being raped because of that, in fact, a lot of countries have gender-neutral public restrooms and it's totally fine
gender neutral bathrooms are single stalled- so a single bathroom with a door on the lock. no one would peep or sexually harass anyone if one person can use it. and I don't think you all understand that these bathrooms are pretty much everywhere. but they're either called family bathrooms or disabled. they don't just help trans people, but they help people who are disabled or let's say a mother who has a mentally challenged son who can't use the bathroom on his own. and the problem is l, if these already exist, why is it a problem to put them in schools? adding a so for bathroom to a school is not going to harm anyone but it will help a lot of people. why are people against this idea?
+REGTON .CATS Exactly. Besides, they're just more luxurious and comfortable than stalled bathrooms.
Ever consider a thing called costs?
Paul DiBenedetto my school has seven female bathrooms and 6 male bathroom as well as 4 single stalled female and male bathrooms. It’s the same with a lot of other schools in my country. I don’t see how expensive it would be to change a sign on a door to indicate a gender neutral place to pee
...exactly, they're completely CLOSED OFF, you can't see what is happening....you DON"T Know if there are 2 ppl in the stall next to you...or 3. THAT is the problem! If somebody were to come in after you and lock the door...you are fucked. No way out. Not even a way for other to see that there is a problem....
so making men and women pee together will make this world a safer place... intreresting point...
+arol veloso "single stall" does not mean shared.
+arol veloso
currently, transsexual people are sometimes bullied and insulted when using regular bathrooms, or even denied from doing so.
if we had gender-neutral ones, they could easily use them without any issues.
thus, like it or not, that is actually true for them, while not causing any real issues for anybody else.
I don´t think that a gender neutral bathroom is the solution...
arol veloso
what is the solution then?
of course, you don't need to make all bathrooms gender-neutral if somehow that would cause some issues, but then you'd have to make an additional bathroom that would be gender-neutral, and most places just aren't designed for it.
on the other hand, you could just "make" people not be "transphobic" and let trans people use whichever bathroom they want - i couldn't care less myself, but good luck with everyone else.
A M. that’s down to men targeting women. It’s not the fault of trans or non binary people. The solution to such problems isn’t to ignore such toxic behaviour but to punish it and discourage it. By ignoring it and saying “well it’s going to happen anyway. There’s nothing we can do” is incredibly disgusting and isn’t helping anyone. The reason it’s still happening is because people are continually allowed to get away with it so how about instead of sitting back and letting it happen we at least TRY to stop it

I was totally with this transperson. I was thinking, dude I wouldn't care less if you came in to a male bathroom. But then they said they wanted to use female bathrooms. Now i'm just more confused as ever what transpeople want. I hope that doesn't come across as insensitive. I honestly just don't know what you want except for obviously gender-neutral bathrooms
This trans person’s name is Ivan
@@Cat-gj5yg Correct and they introduced themselves as a transperson so I was respecting that and using that to identify them
Sorry it has taken 7 years for you to get an answer here.
Listen through the part at 2:40 again. Ivan looks enough like a man that they often use men's restrooms. However, Ivan reveals they were assigned female at birth. They were raised to be a woman, and transitioned away from that. Ivan is neither a man nor a woman, and they are explicitly asking for bathrooms and especially changing rooms that are gender neutral. I didn't hear them express a desire to use women's rooms. Around 3:15 they state in places with a bathroom bill they are being told they belong in the women's restroom. However, they have been violently attacked for using women's rooms in the past because they don't look like a woman.
Another thing that seems to be throwing you off is the idea that transgender people all want the same thing. Inclusive restrooms are undeniably a popular idea, but Ivan can't speak for all of us. We all have different needs and priorities.
If you are looking for more immediate action, one thing that could help in the meantime while we have these separate restrooms is just more tolerance. Women's restrooms and locker rooms are a place of unnecessary hyper vigilance. Even cisgender women have been harassed in them for looking too masculine. Sorting people by their genitalia doesn't eliminate danger, we need people to let go of that myth. It doesn't affect you if someone who looks different is pooping next to you. If no one policed the gender presentation of the people sharing public space, we wouldn't have this issue.
I am not trans but I do like the idea of gender neutral, one occupancy bathrooms. My school had them right before I graduated and I used them whenever I could because it's a lot more private than regular public bathrooms.
Lol you think it’s gonna be PRIVATE??? HAHAH
Your brain needed some fixing

Ivan Coyote is a wonderful, intelligent and forward thinking human being and I think that those, who still can't understand what Ivan is talking about should educate themselves. It's crazy to think that every person is either a woman or a man. And it's not a choice. People don't decide what gender they have or want to have. Please stop these comments and just deal with the fact that not everyone is like you.
and because not everyone is like you is the exact reason we shouldn't be altering society on such a extreme level because .01% people would have it a little easier. maybe we can focus on child soldiers, prescription painkiller epidemic, poverty.

We have that? It's called handicapped bathrooms, just remove the handicapped sign and you're done. Much space, very neutral, such solution.
+Beppe In many places, it's just handicapped stalls WITHIN the gendered bathrooms. They aren't an entirely separate room from gendered bathrooms.
QueenPikmin Considering the percentage of handicapped people, that makes less than little sense but okay. Not where I live and travel though!
+QueenPikmin I'll be honest: I'm no spring chicken and I have NEVER seen a gendered handicap bathroom. Guess that's what happens when you live outside of the US, logic.
+QueenPikmin So handicapped people who may barely be able to move can manage using a normal bathroom but trans people can't? You're really making them look ridiculously pathetic.
It's all about the "need" is her talk. We don't *need* it. People are free to add gender-neutral bathrooms as it is. It's up to whoever owns the place. Unisex toilets do exist after all. It's not something she just invented on stage.
If you wanted to make a trans-specific bathroom that might be used what.. twice a week? And that's something we *need*? Just, no.
Dude. Dude. Some trans people are in a state of transition, and look neither male nor female. Some will forever have deep/high voices that 'out' them as trans. Some states in the US have laws that make it infinitely more difficult for them to enter either bathroom without getting yelled at.
There are unisex bathrooms designed for the disabled that are separate from both male and female bathrooms. Just slap on a label saying those are small single-stall rooms are unisex, family, and disabled. Then you get trans people using them, people who have barely started their transition, single parents with children of the same/opposite gender, and people with mobility problems. Get a bunch of use out of them.
It definitely isn't something new, but as it is, the current setup most places have with only two options (men's/women's restrooms), makes it difficult for all people I just listed. Sometimes, even people with mobility issues have trouble getting past a line of desperate people just so they can reach the one accessible stall at the very back of the restroom. Everyone needs a safe place to pee.
She is extremely selfish: she doesn't want to use the men's room, but wants everyone else to use her gender-neutral room.
The Truth because if she uses the men’s bathroom then there’s a risk she could get beaten up
True, not only is she selfish, she is ORGANIC!! 😊

However, the women do not use the gender-neutral bathroom at all, so now we just have a male and female bathroom again.
The problem is actually the solution! Love it.
i'm trans and i agree gender specific bathrooms are very frustrating.
+Rinoa Super-Genius I have many friends facing the same issues. I hope that things swing the other direction soon.
*****
lol
Thanx for saying that even with all these rude comments. I just don't understand how these people can judge when they've never been in the same situation. I have a friend going through a transition right now where they're confused about their gender identity. How can they understand how it feels when they've never been through it?
+Rinoa Super-Genius How much did TED pay you to write that?
+Rinoa Super-Genius they may be frustrating but what is frusrtaing is when a bi sexual man walks in to a restroom with the lock slipped with my legs open
I'd like to remind people that there's a comment feature that allows you to report hate speech. Use it.
Could you define hate speech for me please?

What about the handicapped restrooms? They're usually a separate, one person bathroom, and practically allways empty. Just add an "and other" to the sign, and this is a non-issue again.
Seriously; I don't mind at all going to the men's room at the same time as a man who used to be a woman; I just don't care. So if the issue is that you don't want to be there with ME, then how about getting some more mileage out of the allready exsisting third option?
gud idea mang
Costs?
There are family rooms. They are separate from men and women.
These comments are absolutely heartbreaking.
People in this country are complaining about wanting third bathrooms when people in other parts of the world don't even have one bathroom. What's heartbreaking is that counting your blessings isn't a thing anymore.
she/ he whatever it is, isn't thinking it through.

How?
+Video Upload People are looking for actual educational content, not some SJW rant about some made up issues.
+Video Upload Now that is a solid and logical argument. I like the part where you said "clearly".
I guess they reacted following their gut feeling and did not even hear her/him out. I also jumped to conclusions first, but you shall never judge someone just because you don't like the topic instinctively.,You have to hear what someone has to say and give yourself the option to chamge your mind.

So you're saying just because there are bigger issues we can't also fix the smaller ones with solutions that already exist?
Stuli THE PROBLEM IS ITS NOT A FUCKING ISSUE IT'S AN EXCUSE FOR TRANS PEOPLE TO WHINE
I have no hatred for the LGBT people. Their concerns are real. But the concerns of the straight male and female people are real too. A separate LGBT bathroom is a safe and fair solution for everybody.
Agreed
Technology, Education, Design. that's your name, that's what we're here to see. i really don't care what your views on trans issues are, it doesn't belong here.

The media uses news the same way commercial television uses shows, to lure you in and listen to their propaganda/commercials. I have a hard time finding news outlets that exist for the sake of informing the public.
and modern new media is garbage. what's your point?
+pyr666 imo it belongs to education and the design of new buildings with gender neutral toilets
It belongs to Educational
I am a man, I do not mind sharing my gendered public restroom with anyone. I do mind being forced to pay for something I will never use. It's to reminiscent to black restrooms of the fifty's. Don't let the advocate shame you.
What a joke this is. I remember then these trees talks used to be insightful and informative. Now it's a platform for all the offended social justice warriors.
+ToroMoto Checking the most popular ted videos on youtube. One is about "power posing" body language, another about some awful magician, another about an underwear model. This at least is about a serious issue of how to design public spaces for the future. It's actually one of the better talks.
Gender neutral bathrooms are not only a trans issue. It is also misandry issue.
man trees talks
Remember when the ancient Athenians executed Socrates for just talking about philosophy? That's what I'm reminded of when I look at the comments section on this video...
+Dan Ingram haha not quite my friend, but good try
I identify as a jump. I need a restroom for verbs to feel safe!
@KebenaranBukanMilikAndaAtaupunSaya of course not
They should have something like "Ted - SJW" instead of putting this on a channel with viewers that wont appreciate the content.
All I hear is "me me me". Why not have another bathroom that's neutral. How would you feel letting your little daughter go into a public bathroom with some grown men in the stall next to her? God help this country.
exactly ..i could not agree more !!!
It's called a family bathroom.
Monia Monika Why are we spending so much money on Bathrooms? Let’s actually focus on REAL problems.
“They don’t feel comfortable using the bathroom”. Grow up snowflake this is the REAL world.
bathroom are very important topic for TED..
I'm so happy I don't have this problem most of the time. Since I'm in a wheelchair I'm using the handicapped toilet which doesn't have a gender.
All non binary people should be allowed to use these.
"Non binary" does not exist.
Get you own washroom ,nobody wants shared bathroom
Imagine breastfeeding your child and some random creepy dude walks in. Like wtf yo.
ideas not worth spreading
Lol, good one.
+geordi rendum i laugh lol
Clearly nobody in the comments actually watched the video, or they're just too blinded by baby rage to understand what was said. A single stall bathroom, that anyone can use. there would still be boy and girl bathrooms, then a third single stall one that ANYONE could use. it's not a big deal, and nobody would even notice that it was a thing unless they chose to use it.
No. Just no. My children and I deserve the right to our own privacy. This is whacked.
Someone needs to teach them how to dress, that jacket is Waaaay too big.

To all of you who say, "we don't need gender neutral bathrooms, we already have regular ones, that's enough". Did you listen to the story of the girl? That she was bullied out of both places?
I think having a few stalls where anybody can go in wouldn't hurt anyone.
To those of you who say "I don't feel comfortable using the same bathroom as X". There could be an extra gender neutral bathroom if that is your concern, but just having stalls should be enough, right? Nobody is watching you in your stall.
+unbr34k4bl3 She was bullied out of the boy's bathroom. Why not use the girls bathroom?
+Rum Dreg she was bullied out of the one and told not to go in the other, leaving none
unbr34k4bl3 oh, missed that part.
+DarkPulsarDragon28 replace "waste" with "spend" then yes.
Yeah, they are the minority. But we have an obligation to not just cater to the majority in a society.
Let me illustrate with an example:
Let's say we have segregated bathrooms. Black people are around 25% of the population? (a minority for sure)
So somebody says: let's have more inclusive bathrooms for everybody, black and white, because black people have so few of them that it is a problem.
Maybe there isn't even a law against black people using "white" bathrooms but people are harrasing them so they cannot get in.
Now somebody says "we need to waste taxpayer money to be more inclusive, even though it affects only the minority?"
Well, I would say "yes, we do".
Why do you think this is different than not having "white only" bathrooms?
For me it's about being inclusive to everybody and having bathrooms that are literally for EVERYBODY, nobody can be bullied out.
Nobody has to tacke anything. You have never been hurt if you just pee the way you were born to pee.

Well, by seing these comments section, I guess we really can't change minds overnight.
For good reason
Sad to see that the majority of people thinks backwards.
Gender neutral restrooms are UNFAIR!!! even if they have only 1 toilet i them. Srill VERY DANGEROUS!!!
i'm feeling so sorry cuz my english isn't so good that i cannot fully express the feelings i've got, but he moved my heart and his story was amazing obviously. if you've never been in the minority group, you'll never understand what they'd feel. i'm also one of the queers but even i havent thought of how transgenders would feel about using toilets that are divided for only men and women..
faith in humanity gets killed in the comment section.

+ADUSEI6111 Indeed, it is refreshing to see so many stand against the lunacy of the left.
Don't worry, I carry the beacon of hope; we will prevail.
+Remy Lebeau Left wing politics? What's that brainwashing song again? The one that the schools force people to sing? For liberty and justice for *ALL*. Unless of course me being a democrat completely undermines my argument for you.
Universal Catastrophe So because of something mentioned in the pledge of allegiance, it isn't a "left wing politics" issue to try and force society to change?
Your lack of a clear argument undermines you just fine.
I created a pledge of resistance in honor of the ruin brought to the USA thanks to the neo-cons and liberals.
"I pledge resistance to the gulag of the Divided states of America,
and to the police state for which it stands, no nation, not under God,
severable, with no liberty or justice for all."
She isn't saying 'make all bathrooms gender-neutral', she's saying 'we need bathrooms for those outside the binary too'. She's right.
Do you realize how much this would cost?
+Bert M Of course, what they go through doesn't matter, and every single dime on this earth is spended EXACTLY the way it should be, and MONEY is the more important issue. While we're at it, how about we remove the funding to make buildings wheel-chair accessible? Not everyone uses a wheel-chair after all. Same is true for facilities that help blind people.
Jacob Hansen No, just because there are similarities between diffferent groups of people, doesn't mean they're identical. Stupid straw-mans won't make you look smart.
sina chiniforoush So why do you compare them to the handicapped?
Jacob Hansen Because it's a very relevant comparison, both are minority groups that are in need of certain things, yet one group's needs are seen as "too much".
I just went to a place that had an all gender bathroom. It wasn't named boys/girls, it was named all gender, so it fits for girls, boys, agenders, and everybody between. It was AWESOME!
YES!
I feel like TED's attention to social justice is getting a little ridiculous, but if you listen to what Ivan Coyote is saying, it's actually a pretty convincing argument. This isn't an obnoxious talk either, just give it a chance and take an unbiased approach to it.
You guys need Jesus
All of these politics about bathrooms, making 3 public bathrooms is a waste of time, what we should do is instead of an enclosed room with stalls it should be open to the rest of the store, along the wall closet sized rooms not stalls with the stupid cracks in them, the toilet area should share a common washing space for everyone like bucees, only out in the open that way if someone gets attacked it's out in the open in not in an enclosed room.
I don't know about single stall everywhere. A lot of people would be waiting to use the one and only stall for long waiting times in high traffic areas.
Look, the main purpose of dividing men and woman into two different bathrooms is to somehow avoid mixing sexes sexually. That is making less and less sense everyday because gender and sexuality are fluid. It makes complete sense to me that bathrooms are gender neutral, not just because of trans people but because it just doesn't seem necessary anymore to divide people into two binary strict categories.
Here in Sweden we have this, its just called bathrooms. So anyone can use it, simple as at that. Why give everything labels when it comes to something we all do, dont be stupid.
+Wolfgrin This.
+Wolfgrin Thank you.
that's the way of thinking that we need bro...
Ironic how gender neutral is also a label.....
Here lies my faith in humanity, buried somewhere in this hateful comment section. R.I.P.
I really appreciate how TED keeps uploading these talks and keeps the likes and comments open in spite of all the hate. Guess what? TED never went off message, these talks you see are a continuation of all the talks you've been watching and loving before. The ones that changed, the ones that fell off of the inovative and paradigm shifting wagon? That's you.
they did go off message when they stopped talking about *t*echnology *e*ntertainment and *d*esign.
All i'm seeing now is propaganda. It's the exact opposite of progression, it's regressive.
@@ll-js7iq lol nah its fact not at all propaganda u fool
Its not that I have anything against "trans" people but really I think that some of them just need to understand that certain rules or norms are set to benifit society as a whole and they are not going to be dropped to benefit a select minority at the cost of everyone else. Besides there are bigger issues than what bathroom you feel most "comfortable" using.
I don't see what the issue is here. If you identify as a woman, use the females' restroom. If you identify as a man, use the mens' restroom. I've never understood why there has always been such a major controversy over transgender individuals' bathroom dispositions lol
+DarkPulsarDragon28 Pumpstation
+Usman Ali Some people identify as neither, and/or use the pronouns they/them.
+Bum WentzUrieAllen Genderfluidity has no basis in scientific fact though. Gender dysphoria is a proven medical condition. I know of no definitive research that suggests that gender can vary as time goes on.
People are mad because this isnt fucking TED. This is NOT technology. This is NOT entertainment. This is NOT Design.
Im not saying... Ivan... is wrong but this is not the fucking place for it.
Nice comments down here, people! How to quickly lose faith in humanity. We have geneder neutral toilettes in our university and it's not a big problem to build one.
Types of people in the comments
1. Wow, I'm gonna say a slur now
2. But what if I'm raped in the bathroom, and nowhere else
3. Let me link a random RUclips video because I don't know how to argue the mean trans person
4. Wrote a whole essay about how sensitive people are, and how it makes them upset
5. Watched the video
Lol
Types of people defending this view on toilets: Fans of the playground.
The amount of dislikes just shows the true struggle of trans-people in our society.
Xxtictoc1216xX Because we live in a heteronormative society so they don't need to do anything. Hetero love is considered the norm and people who identify as the gender they were given at birth is considered normal too so those people don't have to speak out about it, but people in the LGBTQ community get attacked, have their rights stripped from them, have themselves beat and murdered, ect.. They speak out because they have an issue to speak about. It like telling a black person to shut up when they are fighting for their rights because they constantly get murdered in the streets for their race.
I'm confused. Are people giving a thumbs down to the topic in general or is something about this Ivan Coyote I should know about outside of being a transgender person??
I'm a Trans Guy and I absolutely fucking hate public bathrooms
Done with TED
Ship them all to Entitlement Island and see who survives the first week.
The comments on this lovely talk are just disgusting. TED's gone all "SJW"?! All I see is Ivan expressing the need for basic human rights, and I think they have some excellent points.
Thank fucking god I found your comment all of these are disgusting. I can't believe it! I would have thought people in 2016 would be able to deal with the fact people have different opinions and attractions and feelings.
mynameisliberty1 Uh huh. And what are you doing to help remedy these serious world issues? Lol....
+Ella Dewhurst Personally, as someone who thinks this whole debate is ridiculous, I totally accept trans-gender people. However the last I recalled is that both male and female bathrooms have stalls where you can privately do your business. It's as simple as that, deal with it, and let's focus on more important problems like poverty and education.
I don’t even have my own bathroom in my 3 bathroom home that i own!
@righteousgroove The people asking for third bathrooms are not lacking basic human rights. They HAVE bathrooms available to them. Some people in the world don't. This isn't a lovely talk. It's a disturbing indication that people are losing the ability to count their blessings.
What's wrong with you people that you're sooooo afraid to just be together? Are you self-conscious? Do you fear the other? Do you want a separate bathroom just for you in the public? Humans are all humans. Learn to adapt. Stop being afraid of being all humans.
What is asked for is a space to feel safe while peeing or changing clothes, and this is an unreasonable proposition? You who deny this should feel truly ashamed.
Great talk, entertaining speaker. It's good to learn of the struggles of different people, it helps us to understand each other. Shame about the comments.
+Plushy The comments are always a shame, honestly.
+Plushy I thought it was pretty interesting and the speaker was decent. I did not expect these comments on a TED video.
what kind of bullshit is this? one more of this and I'm out
Too uncomfortable and creepy for women. As a guy i would think its weird as well.
There was literally a situation where a man that identified as a woman raped a woman in a gender neutral bathroom, this is outrageous
@@dyamifox6595 that's an extremely rare case, I never see this in the news.
They are undair to women
It's dangerous
Can't even take the slightest chance of anything bad
I don't get it with some people hating TEDx now. TEDx motto is "ideas worth spreading" that means anything that is an important issue that effects something around the world. But when someone talks about ideas about "social issues" it doesn't count and as seen as "PC BS" and "LEFT WING PROPAGANDA". TEDx is made for anyone to host a event and even be apart of as they are planned and coordinated 100% independently and let's not act like issues within society are not just as important as global economic and ecological issues. Because they are and if you don't like it and you want to talk about your ideas, created your own TEDx event or sign up to be a speaker at one.
If the issue is about transgender people then why do we need a separate stall for them, trans people should just use the bathroom of the gender they associate themselves with (unless we replaced the male/female bathrooms with gender neutral ones that would be the most ideal circumstance) I did not watch the video so excuse me if this was brought up
There are people wich have to decide, there are people that would get bullied or kicked out of the bathroom because they are no "Girl", no " Boy".
+Kaiserinmeli I don't believe that it can be ultimately good for trans people to have a separate bathroom though in the long run, having the separate bathroom only promotes the idea that they should be separated from cis people, also having watched the video he seems to believe trans people are different from cis men and women but if they go by that label it implies they do fit cleanly into the gender binary as it implies associating as the opposite gender, if we were talking about people who are genderfluid, bigender, etc. then I would support nonbinary restrooms for people who are nonbinary but trans people should still use the one of the gender they associate as
