  • How to crochet a hexagon blanket even if you've never crocheted in your life!
    Show me your creations on Instagram and twitter @rachelthepython and let me know if there's anything you'd like to see from me!
    I use the StyleCraft Special DK for everything I make
    Love Rachel x
    Pattern (not in technical terms because I don't know how to read patterns, hopefully you can decipher this):
    Round One: Starting off with chain 6 + attaching to make a circle, then chain 3, then do 11 double crochets (American) into the hole to make 12 total stitches.
    Round Two: Chain 3, 1 double crochet into the same hole, chain one, then 2 double crochet into each of the remaining 11 gaps, chaining one between every two stitches to make a total of one chain 3 and 23 double crochets into twelve gaps
    Round Three: Chain 3, 2 double crochet into the same hole, chain one, three double crochet into the next hole, chain one, three double crochet into the next hole... for a total of one chain 3 and 35 double crochets, into twelve gaps
    Found Four: Chain three, two double crochet into same hole, chain one, then *three double crochet, chain two, three double crochet into same hole, then chain one*, then #three double crochet into next hole#, then chain one, then repeat from * to * then chain one then repeat from # to # then chain one and alternate these two for each hole totaling 12 holes, every other hole being a corner.
    Round Five: Same as above, but every third hole is a corner, rather than every other hole
    *if this pattern makes no sense I apologise, I am not great at writing patterns as I just made this up and although I know there's a professional way to word it I don't actually know how to do that. IF anyone fancies commenting the correct way to word this pattern I will switch this out for that. The video covers this so if this doesn't make sense please just watch the video! Thank you *

    I didn't see the time stamps (Yes, I checked the description) so here we go...
    1:21 What you need to start
    1:43 A close look at the hexagons, yarn type, color suggestions
    2:31 Making the slip knot, thoughts on how to hold the yarn, how to make a chain stitch
    6:00 Skip here if you know how to make a chain of 6 and slip stitch into the start of the round to make a circle.
    13:10 Changing color
    16:07 Starting round 2 with new color
    20:42 Starting round 3 with new color
    24:54 Round 4
    27:45 Showing how the hexagon will fit into the final design
    28:47 Round 5
    30:01 Attaching hexagons to each other
    That's it!

      Here's an abbreviated pattern (US) double crochet DC = (UK) treble crochet
      Round 1
      Ch 6, sl st into first chain. Ch 3, counts as first DC [Note: I used a lighter weight yarn and found a chain of 4 to be sufficient to get 12 total DC into hole]
      DC 11 into center of chain, sl st into beginning DC
      Round 2
      Ch 3, DC in same st, ch 1. # 2 DC in next st, ch 1
      # Repeat in 10 more times, sl st into beginning DC
      Round 3
      Ch 3 in first ch 1 space, DC 2 into same ch 1 space, ch 1. # 3 DC in next ch 1 space, ch 1
      # Repeat 10 more times, sl st into beginning DC
      Round 4
      Ch 3 in first ch 1 space, DC 2 in same ch 1 space, ch 1. # 3 DC in next ch 1 space, ch 2, 3 DC in same ch 1 space, ch 1, 3 DC in next ch 1 space, ch 1
      # Repeat with every other ch 1 space becoming a corner.
      Round 5
      Ch 3 in first ch 1 space, DC 2 in same ch 1 space, ch 1. Repeat. # 3 DC in next ch space, ch 2, 3 DC in same space. Ch 1, 3 DC in next space, ch 1. Repeat.
      # Repeat with every 3rd chain space becoming a corner. Finish and weave in ends.

    Made my first stitch ever using this tutorial, and I just finished up my first hexagon!!
    I've always wanted to learn crochet, ever since I was a kid watching my lefty-mom make beautiful throw blankets. She told me she wasn't sure how to teach me since she's left-handed. Now as an adult, bored during shutdown, with the whole of RUclips at my disposal I can finally cross this off my bucket list!

    managed to make the first one but then i got a bit too confident and now i'm on the second to last layer and somehow have 10 sides instead of 6... i'm also left handed which is making it all a bit more confusing too
    Edit: update 2 hours later... I had to undo about half of it but I finally made the second one! They are connected together but not very well and the amount of holes didn't really line up but for my first ever attempt at crochet it went really well! Thank you for the tutorial it was very good :)

    • @rachelthepython
      @rachelthepython  2 года назад +2

      I also used to find this hard. There's two things you can do: maybe try instead of looking for the third chain and slip stitching into there, try slip stitching into the gap between the chain and the next double crochet. I used to do that for ages and it worked great. If you don't like that look then try making your chains fairly loose so it's easier to get into the top one. Don't stress about it too much, the more you make them the easier it will get. I always just kind of 'aim for the top' even if it isn't quite the right place, it connects fine and gets crocheted over anyway xx

      I did a row of half double crochet around the outside. It did bunch up a tiny bit but not enough to bother me. Single crochet might work better, or you could make half hexagons and put those into the gaps and then crochet any border you like because the blanket will be a rectangle.

    Hello, thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. I would just like to know if you are using any specific yarn or just the same stuff you would normally use for knitting? ( I’m a knitter but would love to try crocheting).

    • @rachelthepython
      @rachelthepython  3 года назад

      Any yarn will work - the same as used for knitting will be fine. I use the Stylecraft Special DK - DK refers to the weight which means it works best with a 4mm or 4.5mm crochet hook, but as long as the wool you use suits the size of the crochet hook you have it should be fine. Glad you liked the video!!

      Top tip - a great way to get rid of the ends after a colour change is to crochet them in as you go (if that makes sense) coz I hate having to do it at the end. I do get lazy sometimes and not take my own advise but it's so much easier! Hope this helps.

    I'm subscribing after seeing your blanket, haven't even started the tutorial! I've crocheted a bit but haven't done hexagons...yet. Love your hair too :-) * after watching some...I'd love a faster version that's not for complete beginners (doesn't explain how to do the basic stitches) I'm not sure how to find the link with time stamps you mention...One thing I wonder is- once you've attached two and want to attach one to both of them, what do you do in the join where the seam is? a slip stitch through/around the seam...or nothing? Thanks!

    • @rachelthepython
      @rachelthepython  3 года назад +1

      just a slip stitch in the join between the two yeah :) and I will definitely make more crochet videos which are a bit faster so look out for them! Thanks for the comment :) xx

    I am using this pattern to make my future bridesmaid a blanket as a gift! It’s working out great, but my hexagons come out like the one in the tutorial where it’s “wonky”. I’ve sewed the one edge and then it’s straight, and I think the hexagons in the middle of the blanket will be straight too. For hexagons on the border part of the blanket, do you think adding a double crocheted border will make them look straight? Any advice helps!!

    • @rachelthepython
      @rachelthepython  2 года назад +1

      I found a double crochet border was too thick and made the blanket go wavy. I did a border of half double crochets and it worked okay, even single crochet just to neaten it up might look good. I've seen some other cool borders too, if you dm me on instagram @rachelthepython I can send you some others i've seen x

    • @rachelthepython
      @rachelthepython  2 года назад

      I personally didn't, I just put a border on it and left it alone - one row of half double crochets. There are loads of videos on youtube on how to make a half hexagon, some are more helpful than others. You could give that a go, i never tried it for this blanket but i am pretty sure it would work x

      I used a 4mm metal hook with a rubber / plastic handle. I used Stylecraft special DK and I think I say the colours in the video.

    Hi Rachel, another question! I'm about a third into my blanket and I LOVE the hexagons, but I now think I've been attaching them wrong at the join between two! argh! When you add a third between two- are you just going through one side or through both corners of the joined hexagons? I've only JUST figured out how I can go through both...so all mine have a slight gap where I've only gone through one on each joined corner. I'm not experienced with joining pieces so my brain didn't 'get' that without it being shown how to do it.

    • @rachelthepython
      @rachelthepython  3 года назад +1

      Yeah sorry I didn't show this properly in the video. You're meant to join them at the space between the two so there's no gaps, but I also only discovered this once I had attached a few so I imagine you won't notice too much if you start attaching this way from now on.

      @@rachelthepython I figured that! shame it took me AGES to have that lightbulb moment...I'm halfway through row 6! yes I'm going to start doing it the right way now and may put a stitch in the others if they look a bit loose. OOPS. I was so pleased with my blanket and now feel daft...It still looks good as a whole though.
