Nathan is unapologetically himself. I appreciate his character.
Too dont like the screen going way down. The orwell screen people will be looking down and not keeping their eyes on the road. The screen is nice sometimes i just think its orwellian too its like "subscribe and pay more or i cant understand what you are saying" if we keep going down this path they wont have steering wheels and your house will only unlock you to the garage when its time to go to work. Sorry bob your social credit score isnt high enough to take debt to go to thr gas station for a snack anyway i will unlock the fridge when We get home if you be nice im your ai here to help. Orwell 1984. Plastic cars with high end tv screens. Orwell zombie 1984
I'm fine with the large screens if common HVAC controls like heated seats/wheel/mirrors, defrost, etc. are hard buttons/knobs. Those are really the only things you play with while driving. And you don't want to have to go through menus to find a seat control. Also, because of the many cameras, the screens are best in a horizontal layout. The Ram and Ford Ranger are too small, and the bottom is just redundant HVAC for no reason.
Even with hard tactile controls, if the screen is large then the controls end up down near the console which is much harder to use while driving then if they were up at steering wheel level.
@@Cloud30000 not really. Many cars with no screen still put their controls low so the screen isn't a factor. Just look at these trucks and you can see it.
I hate when the screen looks like a big tablet stuck on the dash as afterthought. I'm happy with a screen that looks like it's symmetrically integrated as part of the dash and doesn't rise above the vision line.
How long till we have large screen TV's to watch movies on while we're driving down the road? Sometimes I wonder if its ever gonna be enough for some people.
I wonder how many accidents these in dashboard smartphone on steroids will cause.
It’s been a few years, maybe data is out now.
@@garysarratt1 The numbers will keep going up due to larger screen sizes and more options that's more eyeballs on the computer screen instead of the road every year as technology excels.
@@4vinylsound I don’t doubt it, but actual data will tell the tale for sure. When I get a chance I will look up nhtsa or similar.
Orwell screen tv cars made of plastic and soda cans. Costing a lot distracted by quirks and features oh its leaking now wow depricated so fast money gone. But at least you csn draw on it. Press a button itll play fart noises subscribe subscribe and pay. Built to wear out not in.
Rather than have all that stuff I prefer knobs for basic functions, lights, hvac, traction, etc. But, it would be interesting if they had on-board diagnostics, a scan tool and code reader built in, which I’m sure the manufacturers would never do. Good video
Granted this requires an OnStar subscription, but on the Colorado, you can call OnStar and a human will read the codes, what they mean, and common fixes for the issues. I really like that capability, but I agree, I would rather avoid subscriptions and just have on-board diagnostics.
Great job Nathan. Personally only a back up camera is necessary. Mechanical gauges and levers for everything else
The Frontier Pro-4X does have in-built navigation.
And they selected an SV with an appearance package over the Pro4X 🙄
As long as there is Apple Car Play and Android Auto. Factory navigation is unnecessary, and dated.
@@brentworls8509yup, I've never used the navigation on my Ford ranger.
@@brentworls8509 I used to think that, but I was wrong. My cousin lives on five acres out in the woods on the Kitsap Peninsula in Wa State. If I use google, it takes me to the wrong place, but if I use the nav in my Bronco, it takes me right there. I still can't find it without nav, because of all of the forking backroads leading to her property.
I like Nathan’s jokes at Roman’s expense lol it actually makes me like Roman more when he takes them well
I have been driving my new Ranger for over a week now and I dont have Any issues with the screen / knob set up... you keep mentioning having to take your eyes Down to use the lower HVAC / Vol knobs. Why ? Pretty Simple... Temp on the left, Vol in the middle, and fan speed on the right... Why do you need to LOOK down ?
I preferred the tech in my '07 Ranger. All it had an AM/FM radio. I miss it more & more everyday.
The Chevy screen had two (fixed) problems on some colorado/canyons and backup camera issues. So it gets last place because it’s “unreliable”. So does this mean the Tacoma on the 4wd test will be last compared to its competitors? Since it’s “unreliable” too. ????? It broke also.
Chevy infotainment has zero issues … have tested driven a couple w/ no problems. You’re babbling over nothing; the Tacoma literally blew a front differential & ended-up in the shop.
@@krasnaludek298 EXACTLY! They fixed it!! But it’s still considered “unreliable”. 😒😩😤
I've been a solid Toyota guy for 40 years. I would have to agree with your assessment. He should not make it last because it wasn't working at the time. All vehicles have hiccups, once they're fixed, there's no issue unless it keeps happening, especially out of warranty. In warranty, I'm good
@@dalea4350 Exactly! And as far as mechanical issues, there were none. Chevy rocked the first year I think.
I love your content. The 2024 Colorado has fixed the “ Gremlins” for the most part. Can you use a ZR2 version in future videos to compare to your new Raptor Ranger? Better Apples to Apples comparison.
I could care less about a large screen seriously just give me functional buttons
couldn't* Stating you could care less implies you care.
If you could care less, then I guess it’s OK … think about it. Probably the opposite of what you intended.
We have a '23 Explorer Timberline. The screen is raised up from the stack so it's easier to view. Controls are buttons and knobs. I like it. Great review Nathan.
Meh, no one needs vehicle navigation these days. Apple car play all the way 🙌🏼
Isn’t GM trying to move away from CarPlay? Probably to force subscription but I could be wrong.
@@shiftymcgee9359 I think in their electric vehicles they are. Super big mistake if you ask me 🤷🏻♂️
the tacoma’s dash looks like a kid 3d printed it. its a joke that they want 47k for that junk
Agree … Toyota interior on whole is a joke.
#1 selling junk
I like it if you don’t then don’t buy it. Problem solved.
Just drove a 2022 explorer limited and that was perfect. Physical buttons for hvac controls and heated steering wheel and heated seats control as well. Having those on screens is horrible and using a different car for work several times a year you can really see the weaknesses of all screen controls.
I love your perspective and honesty.
The screens are nice. But not a big deal for me personally.
I have a 21 Tundra and my wife a 17 Jeep Wrangler. So we have nothing special screen wise. And it’s fine.
I do rent a fair amount of vehicles. The Ford edge had a huge screen as did a Grabd Cherokee 4xe. It worked great.
I always use car play. I hate climate stuff on the screen I like knobs and buttons for that and volume.
@ 17:25
Would it be possible to reinstall a normal antenna?
The Frontiers optional 9in screen has built in navigation and will do all the things that were asked of it if that's what you want instead of carplay.
In 2020, when I was shopping for a truck, I went with a 2019 Frontier because it had the LEAST amount of tech.
I'm a tech guy, but keep it simple and functional. If you have to "figure it out", it's not good tech. Screen resolution and visibility are more important than size. Bigger is not always better.
Dude, I personally own the 2023 Nissan Frontier Pro-4x and the Technology works flawlessly. If you're rating them by screen size then you're not talking about best Tech. Most people now a days use their phones with the Technolgy for calls, text and maps. Nissan's should be rated #1 from the vehicles you reviewed!
😮the backup cam is glitched & or broke too?😮 9:02
I'm in the camp of larger screens. I like the camera's displayed in full size, and the multi-use capability of larger screens.
I don’t care about how good the screen is I want something simple and easy to
Use like in the Nissan frontier
Then get a Nissan Frontier. Do whatever you want. Different people want different things.
You’re not biased are you? I mean, you’re not like me and own a 2022 or newer Nissan Frontier? Do you? Nah, couldn’t be!
Because as a Nissan Frontier owner, I’m not at all biased towards my beautiful Nissan Frontier truck! 😅
Out of all the trucks that are available, the 2022 Nissan Frontier King Cab 6’ Bed Truck was/is the absolute perfect truck for me. So, I am totally biased and don’t mind saying so.
@@jimmyrichards5595 after much research I have decided to buy a Frontier. For my needs it suits me plus the fact that it costs less than similarly equipped trucks. I looked at a SR5 Tacoma which is the base model and with $1500 in dealer add ons the price was $49K!
Then you do care.
I frankly think screens are a but orwellian. "Command not understood" imagine if it was port injected only and wasnt an aluminum plastic piece of overpriced junk excuse my french
Bring back analog gauges
Absolutely!
Why is the ranger turbo on the bottom of the engine.what happens when you submerge it in water.
Andrea can we get a screen and technology review on these trucks from you? Nathan really does not like the newer screens because they are not physical gauges and the review definitely suffered because of it. Nathan also appears to be a bit technologically challenged. One example was that he continued to attempt to use the voice navigation in each truck and then complained when it asked to subscribe to that service. I don't know if Nathan understands that all the owner has to do is connect their phone using the Bluetooth in the vehicle to Apple Car Play or Android Auto and bingo you have full voice navigation.
I'm a real man. No fancy screens or technology for me please because I'm a real man. No turbos please, only NA engines for me because I'm a real man. In fact I'm such a simple no fuss real man I don't even want a windshield because that's just another thing that can break, I'll just wear goggles because I'm a real man.
.. I'll just carry the load on my back I dont need a truck I'm a real man
…I’ll just carry a Leatherman and build what I need when I get there, because I’m a real man.
I like larger screens but with most of the necessary manual buttons. The large vertical uconnect in the RAM trucks is fantastic. Large screen but has most needed manual buttons around the perimeter. Intuitive and clean.
The only tech I need on my work truck are power windows and locks and AC!!!!!
Then go buy an old bare bones truck and see how well it goes.
Then go find a 2003 Tacoma or something. 2005 Ford Ranger will give you nothing but power locks and AC. You will be set.

I have a jeep with Uconnect 5 it is great but very frustrating you can’t go backwards in you preset channels
are you guys planning on doing a ridgeline vs your santa cruz in the future
The contradiction of you can't use your phone while driving it's illegal and causes accidents but then the auto industry gives you a Smartphone on steroids equipped in the dashboard.
Playing on your touchscreen is considered distracted driving too.
I want no screens! But we need them for the cameras that we need.
We all had to look down at our lap while flipping through cd's😅
You can adjust temp and heated seats on the ford with audio control.
The controls for the ranger are handy if you rest your hand on the shifter. I have a similar set in my lightning and I do have to look down a bit more. But blue cruise as allows it to be easier. But the ranger does look to be lower.
Hi, great comparison. Just curious what has been Chevys excuse on the back up camera? Couldn’t they just put a new camera on it and be done? Sounds crazy they haven’t fixed it
I DON'T WANT A SCREEN IN MY WORK TRUCK JUST MAKE IT TURN ON WHEN I TURN THE KEY GOD DAMMNIT !
Preach, brother!
My frontier has 9 inch display clear crisp and it has navigation with fender sound system 10 speakers and sub
The less screens the better. I like buttons and knobs
I came here to say I don't care about tech in my vehicles. I actually PREFER less tech.
Getting rid of physical buttons is dumb. I like screens but not at the expense of physical buttons.
I’m curious about wording of the surveys that Ford put out as well.
I have a Ford Maverick, the screens in a good location but quality socks but... I have well placed buttons and knobs for radio, HVAC and seat heaters. I don't have to use a touch screen to reset my trip logs. The built-in navigation is ok, not great but very usable. I prefer what I have over the Ranger
I'm not overly happy with a giant screen that significantly increases glare while driving at night, and it can be more eye candy than necessary in other times. They do rock, but there's such a thing as too much. Every person is different.
All of that being said, I'd much rather have a huge screen over any chrome trim anywhere in the freaking interior for the sun to bounce off into my eyes while driving.
Your screen doesn't adjust for day or night driving?
@@garys2157 If your road tractor didn't come with the option, and most fleet tractors aren't, as the option isn't very economical for fleet operators, so they will use an add on satellite navigation/dispatch system, through an outside contractor, and no.....those systems do not dim automatically. The operator has to do it. Yes, I know full well how to accomplish this operation but you'd be surprised at how many 'steeringholders' are quite challenged by all things related to 'technoligy'.😎
Wonder which ones do/don't support Wireless Apple Car Play? Some only support it via a USB cable.
Love the video. I think 8” screen is more than enough in a car or mid size suv/truck. If your in a full size a 10” maybe 12” at the long end is fine, but I can’t understand why so many of these screens are any bigger than that. Also I don’t know if it’s just my car, but I don’t think these screens have nearly enough option for brightness. At night I would like to be able to turn mine down more than it goes. It’s fine and it doesn’t blind me but it’s right on the edge and it’s very annoying. Also 8-10 inches on a screen is more than enough for apple car play or android auto which is all that matters. Bigger screens don’t even seem to use all that space for anything. It’s just a bigger version of the same which isn’t helpful even in maps.
My perspective in regards to a screen is 1) Screen options should also be available by manual means as much as possible. 2) Screen should be higher and positioned diagonally, to keep your eyes as close as possible to refocus to the task at hand. 3) Navigation should always be available for free. 4) All screen options should be available by using voice commands. 5) Having a screen at all should be an option.
I like the horizontal screens, the ranger looks like Ram with screen and air vents.
The BEST TECH IS NO TECH!! No infotainment screen, no eco engine, just a radio, REAL GAUGES, no turbos, Roll up windows.
11:23 😮😮😮How intuitively does it compare to the Gladiator Mojave you guys’ve been using for months?☺️
Funly enough, I might be weird, but I like ranger and frontier at the same time, like if I am using a truck for work than I would ranger cameras aline the stuff I tow and the frontier for fun joy run when I basic stuff.
To me they are all nearly identical and it comes down to which ypu perfer amd if youre eilling to tolerate their shortcomings
They most likely couldn't fit the nice 12-inch vertical touch screen of the expedition and F 150s in the ranger, but i love that screen.
If I can't adjust the HVAC through a tactile experience, screen-based controls are absolute garbage.
Orwell 1984. Plastic engine but a high end screen. 4 cylinders 8 injectors. Illiteracy. Saw a young woman maybe a hair younger than me texting and driving rear ended someone in her ford focus and tbe airbag didnt go off. Whats the point in airbags if after 15 years the orwell 1984 tv screen works but the airbag doesnt when its finally time that you needed it to you feel me???
For the Colorado, check if it can connect to WiFi; if so, you could test the Nav by connecting to your phone’s hotspot.
not surprised on the chevy.
You’re very logical Nathan unlike some others when it comes to cost. Roman for example. The cost of these vehicles, and subscription will cost and become Sync by Microsoft in years to come. Great video.
I am old school in the sense, we did not have screens at all. So makes little difference to me. If you are so blind you have to have a 50 inch screen to be happy, you should not be driving. lol. All controls should be figured out and easy to use on the go if one is a fiddler with things as they go down the road. A screen is just wrong for such things IMO. Takes your eyes off the road. Or just as bad, it blinds you at night and ruins your vision. And fussing with screens whether parked or driving to do simple functions like control lights and heater, radio, etc. Bad deal. There is a place for rich tech. I just don't think it belongs here. Small screen maybe in an Infotainment screen to help you pair your phone up and use as a navigation for verbal interface is 1 thing, the rest of it, just over cumbersome. All that being said, Mercedes is who you need to turn to if that is your focal point for a road going vehicle with great tech. in it.
With the Colorado, no lights switch is unacceptable. Overall it's a nice truck.
Snarf's must be a local fave over there. There's like 64 locations within 5 square miles.
Those navigation systems took one look at Nathan... chuckled and said "We should be asking you where all the food joints are"
First time seeing him on TFL?
@@skylarmccune9242I’m not answering for him. But I’m thinking… No, it’s not his first time seeing Nathan. He’s just poking a little fun. His attempt at a little jocularity.
I could be wrong, but that’s what I think!
@@jimmyrichards5595feels like fat shaming to me
as somebody in the market for one of these, this is useful.
Next I'd love to see the associated Android app comparison for the vehicle connected features, nobody is talking about those and its hard to find info on them.
I will say during the Colorado part, Jaded by Spiritbox is an absolute banger.
Glitches have always been a premium feature on all Chevys
I just bought a 2024 ZR2 and it came from the factory without working cameras. They tore it apart and determined the video camera module was defective and they ordered a new one. So if I was Andre I would be looking for them to do that.
You all need to clean the screens before you shoot these vids 😂
Vertical screens pride a larger navigation area when displaying heading up (which is most common).
When screen size takes priority over bed size, you know the midsize truck market has become a sad joke.
3:39 is this the Windows XP clicking sound? I might be remembering wrong
There's something funny about having Nathan - Mr. Old Tech - be the one judging some of the latest tech inside these trucks. We love Nathan but you guys should have thrown in one of the youngers in there as well to get two perspectives on all this technology.
Im a youngster by your standard i guess and nathan brings up some good points if youre asking me. Btw you see the new indian scout? They announced like sorta next gen version of it and they still have a really quality traditional guage on it and it looks very good as well as you can trim up to a techpackage its got the gps in the guage and cruise control those are two big deals for motorcycles. It doesnt scream "subscribe or i cant understand you" you can get the screen guage but to me the tradition guage is where its at
Downside to the Colorado and Canyon is no headlight dial or knob and the shifter placement I can't stand which is also stupid.
20:35“subscribe to use feature”!💀 21:31 😮
4:20 Using your own words, maybe you’re not the best person to do this Technical video. After using the knobs for a while, you don’t have to look at them. It’s called muscle memory. I like the natural voice, voice command systems that understand normal speak spoken normally
Hvac & Drive function systems should NEVER be on screens. Media should be integrated with your phone therfore it would never be outdated.
I’m with you N-8, give me back my physical gauges. That big center consul on the Ford is why I would not buy the Ford. Andre cannot sell that trail balls to get any money out of it until that back camera is fixed. Yes, digital screens might be the new millennium, but there is so many other people that prefer gauges. Safety aspect of the digital screens is not there when they are so far down. Taking your eyes off the road that long period of time is not a good thing.
If big screens big buttons so it's easier to use while driving, I don't understand why manufacturers put knobs inside of LCD display, I do like the Uconnect, but the reverse camera is mess again just like on a 12-in in the trucks too restricted too small, either use the whole screen or add another view just like other manufacturers have it
All We NEED is a small Screen for a BACK UP CAMERA
I’ll take the simplicity of the Nissan. Plus the fact that it’s naturally aspirated. No turbos for me.
We all know your agenda. But this is an infotainment review. Objective review the frontier is worst
@@beexiong2995 sounds like you are the one with an agenda. Some of us buy trucks to do truck things, not because we want a personal computer stuck to the dash.
Go ahead and take a gander at the reliability data on the Frontier. Literally one of the least reliable vehicles on the market.
Not sure where you are getting your data from but the Frontier scored 4/5 for the past ten years while the Toyota scored 3.5/5 during the same period. For 2023 the Frontier was rated the most reliable mid size truck. These ratings come from different sources. But thank you for telling me to take a gander. It reinforces what I already know.
Which truck do you think has the best orwell 1984 tv in it? direct or direct and port injection together is suspicious to me. Thats a lot of injectors i think what was all that wrong with port injection was it not the most reliable and most affordable option?
Nate missed the mark on the Colorado and did the truck a disservice. You can change the screens on the DIC and the system does use google maps in for navigation. It does suck that you need WiFi to make it work. I did not finish watching the video but I am sure the Yota or Ranger were his favorite.
By always using Andre’s Colorado for your test, you’re doing a disservice to the Chevy. Couldn’t TFL get a 2024 z71 to compare to the rest? I thought the same thing when you did your acceleration video and your 100 mile loop to test highway mileage video too.
I think its awesome cause something is always screwed up on it lol
I like the Ford Ranger most
Did I blink or did you not include the truck I’m looking into midsize 2024 Canyon Denali?😊
This is my least favorite of the truck comparisons. You can’t mark a truck down because its subscription isn’t active while others have the complementary intro service active ( Jeep, also requires paid subscription for maps to work). And way to bash the Colorado over a hiccup with the rear camera. I also have a 23’ Colorado and have no issues. Camera detail is amazing. Do not compare trucks with handicaps. The Tacoma would lose with its front differential if that was the case.
i always have and always will prefer radio/infotainment that is fully integrated into the dash. number 1, for the aesthetics. it looks like an afterthought and cheap sticking a tablet on the dash. number two, ease of aftermarket upgrade if one chooses to do so. give me the nissan form factor every day of the week.
I second the vote for the Frontier. F. Caruso
The backup camera view on Andre's isn't much worse than my 2018 and mine works just fine
Buttons, physical dials, switches, and one digital screen, but not a huge one. This is what I like in a truck, or a car. Among those trucks, I would choose what Jeep actually offers... maybe I would add something, but it's OK. Thumb down for subscriptions of course. Thanks for the video N8! 😀
Screens should never be large or at a bad angle that would distract from driving safely. Sure, the features are very handy to have all in the same place but most of them aren't really necessary. I do wish the camera on the Frontier was a little better but as long as it has a backup camera I'll live.
You know, manufacturers always say this is what "customers have asked for" But, I've never been polled by a manufacturer about anything. Has anyone on here ever been asked? Serious question...
A video for Gen Z who need screens like pasifiers 😂
Absolutely!
So whatever happened to the big off road challenge for all these trucks?
Towing, mpg, tech videos are out, but no off road?
Don't forget, the Sync 4 system allows you to tell the vehicle what HVAC settings you want. "Hello Ford. Set temperature to 70°". No need to physically change the settings.
That is actually one of features which early systems had Uconnect and sync in 2013-14 if Auto HVAC available, I would think all current systems can do it
That’s more convenience than I need. I have a big knob in the center (giggity) and it’s quicker and easier than all that talking anyhow. To each his own, though.
@garysarratt1 but if the idea is to not take your eyes off the road and you want the technology built into these screens, it makes deciding which system is better, different. The VAST majority of people want the rech and screens, and so the ability to use voice commands is helpful.
@@ryansheard8092 Sure it’s helpful (and I’m sure great for handicapped folks), I can tell it to adjust the hvac too, I just don’t because that knob is right there by my hand. Maybe putting the controls in the monitor is the first step to break us from wanting traditional controls.
Nissan all day! You guys need to do a better job with selecting your comparative trims! You selected an appearance package for 3,890 dollars when you basically could’ve gotten a Pro4x for the same money 🙄
Did they buy this one?
@@garysarratt1 no they didn’t but they can request the trim they wanna test. They do it all the time.
Love the new ranger vertical screen. Nicely integrated setup.
You dont need to be staring at the screen that long. Just glance to do your navigation while moving.
Eyes being down shouldnt be a problem.
No Ridgeline? Semi-understood why it wasn't included in the tow video. But weird to keep omitting it everywhere else, no?
I like the Jeep (simple and clean) setup the best and Frontier (nice and basic) second. The others are either cheap looking (Tacoma) or trying to overcompensate (Ford).
To be honest, the screens have both become less, and more important. They have become more important as it pertains to viewing cameras and modifying the endless settings in menus. That being said, those cameras become less necessary when the vehicle has good visibility to begin with. The access controls have become less important on the brands that have invested in good voice recognition systems. The Uconnect is decent here, but Ford has really moved a lot of the controls to voice control. You can even control HVAC with it. In my opinion, voice controls supported with AI algorithms and head up display completely replacing gauge clusters is the future. So is bringing back column shifters, as they can be operated without looking at them, and free up console space. Floor shifters take up too much space, dial shifters require you to see the shift to tell the difference between detents, and button shifters also require you to look at them. Button shifters aren't cool folks. They have been on school busses for decades. There is a reason police departments require column shifters on interceptor vehicles. Ergonomics are important when it comes to controls that operate vehicle direction. Imagine driving a car with that trailer backup assist dial in lieu of a steering wheel? That would be terrifying.
