Me too. IF you were a rider who wore Harley boots (I am, I do) and you come off and break an ankle, both you and the EMS will be thankful there is a zip. BUT. These Harley boots you test here are not really 'safety' riding boots. The left boot has no gear shift patch over the big toe, and even a lot of the Chinese boots have these. The outside ankle has no bone protector. The ones I have do not have that mesh liner (and Harley boots do not have those safety features I mentioned), and the sole is a vibram like sole. The boot is way better made (in Vietnam, not China) than the pair you show here, and for the $100 I paid in the Winter clearance sale at my local dealer, the value is OK.

The zipper makes sense on boots designed for actual motorcycle use, as having laces that could come undone while riding could lead to them getting tangled with the bike. But nothing in the breakdown of the boot indicated any actual safety or motorcycle specific features, like additional ankle, toe or heel protection, or even a thicker patch of leather for the shifter on the left boot. This boot was obviously not made for riding, and it's about as safe as a leather vest.

If it isn't cost effective to get them repaired(I doubt they will be worth fixing) I would be willing to send my Chippewas to you for review, it might be interesting to compare them to a new pair in the same video like you are wanting to do with the moc toe boots.
They are currently at about a year of wear, and I still have a little life in the soles but they have definitely seen some use, 2 months as a metallurgy inturn in Nevada(lots of walking and plenty of rock crushing), 3 months loading trailers for Walmart(I developed a mild wool allergy during this time and started wearing bamboo liner socks to prevent direct contact), a month working at Wendy's (not hard on the boots, but it was a lot of standing and they prevented foot pain) as well as an additional 6 months loading trailers for UPS. My biggest issues with the are the terrible quality of the speed hooks, the fact that they weren't initially wide enough for my feet(I have wide feet, and the leather did stretch after I saturated it with oil) and the fact that the leather is falling apart at the edge of the steel toe(it was a bit thin to start with and has become somewhat week from fatigue) and i wore through the leather on the toes (this isn't unheard of for steel toe, and covered it in epoxy to prevent rust). Based on a smartwatch I occasionally borrow I average somewhere between 10 and 20 miles of walking per day when loading trailers. Once i got past the brake in period these boots have been very comfortable (with the exception of when I tried Dr Scholl's gel insoles) I currently use some homemade insoles in them but have found that cheap foam insoles are also pretty comfortable if they are changed out about once every 1 to 2 months.

I have the same patch of plastic on the heel of my caterpillar colorados and its not a very good idea. Its hard on my feet and has started de laminating on the top. Creating a little crease that digs into my leg.
I glued a piece of of actual leather on top of it to remedy it.

I have TWO pairs of Harley boots I bought in the late 90’s - 00’s. The logo is fairly discrete but they’re really well made and unusual. My fav pair have been resolved once or twice. They’re a square toed ankle motorcycle boot. They’re really cool and super well made. I think I need to pull em outta the closet and give them some love. I was shocked at how shitty these boots were!

At $140, you could get a pair of Jim Green Razorbacks and with the $10 that you saved, you could buy a bottle of black dye for leather, if you really need black boots.

It blows my mind how this is a riding boot. It’s marketed as a riding boot yet there’s no acute difference between it and any other cheap work boot aside from the YKK zipper. I was appalled to find so few shoes and boots branded with HD logo have so little protection.

Would love to get to the bottom (or the inside) of the boot because the Indian store is very close and it tempts me...

I really thought they were going to be a lot more expensive than $150 since Harley loves huge margins but I guess for the quality they're already pricy.
I have some quality Harley stuff that lasted me a long time but shoes are a whole different beast from hoodies and wallets, and I usually don't expect non-shoe brands to get them right. Still doesn't excuse the crappy product though.

Zippers are there for people who want a firm fit on their feet but don't have the strength to pull the laces properly. You get someone to help you with the laces once and then you use the zipper the rest of the time.

They're really isn't any worse company than others. They all suck. I bought a Tesla model 3 1 year ago, coming from a MB E class, and it was trash. So I bought a MB G550, and my girl liked it so much that I gave it to her and bought myself the new G63 AMG. The Tesla, and both of the G wagons had issues. The issues just cost more, the more expensive that the car is. (Not that I paid for any of the issues, as they were under warranty.) So even Affalterbach is putting out junk.

So, to sum it up, Harley Davidson the brand being Harley Davidson the company in seeing how far they can milk the short term.
If their boot was quality, it'd be like their bikes in having repair or maintenance done at a deal for 4x the price.
