I sing the praises of the Warm Audio 87. I can throw it on just about anything and with a tad bit of EQ, it sounds great. You can score a used pair for less than $800 most days of the week. So many of those old mics are now at least 60 years old or more. Capsules, wiring, and caps are starting to dry out and deteriorate, if they haven't already done so. There are some great services out there to restore, but who wants to spend $10,000 on a vintage piece and then turn right around and spend another $3,000 (and 6+ months) getting it refurbished? When so many of the great engineers out there are happily making great tracks (and money!) using new stuff, there's really no reason for us poor weekend sods to be out there throwing our hard-earned dollars at overpriced vintage stuff.

Another good one guys. Thanks again. Can you please do some good old Rock n Roll next time? Would love to hear some exiting Electric Guitars and Bass recorded with real amps!
Ancient tech is fine, so long as it doesn't fail at the wrong moments (which it often does). So, kudos to the new makers.... Maybe I missed it, but no time alignment on the drum mics? I've found that that at least 50% of drum tone improvements can be gotten with a lot less EQ, gating, and other processing just by getting drum mics aligned. Yes, it can be a fiddly nuisance, but well worth it.
I do sometimes use sound Radix for that if needed. But very often, if I am recording and placing the microphones, simple old school polarity flips is all I need to get what I’m after. Thank you for watching 🎉
Of course you don't NEED vintage mics but if you have the money and can appreciate and leverage any benefits then all power to you. At the opposite end there are plenty of pretty cruddy mics but we live in a wonderful time of v serviceable and affordable mics too. Another reason for this vid? Vintage mics don't get youtubers their $ponsor bux and clickthroughs and if we're honest I don't think PLAP are afraid of either.
I did. Then downloaded the multitracks. And it sounds great with no plugins. I’m just wondering if that’s how it was tracked or if some additional processing was committed ITB before the multitrack was posted. I understand there was some shaping on the way into PT with hardware. Is that it? Thanks for the response!
Correct. Everything is as recorded. The only things that were compressed likely would have been the kick, snare, drum rooms. Also, some light EQ on the kick, snare, and Tom’s. Everything else is completely raw. Enjoy🎉
Have to replace the sm57 on snare botom. Its ugly as sounds like 57 and not as a snare drum and always popping out from transporent condensers. Has more option to win with beyer m69 or akg d224.

You may want to research those Lewitt and Lauten mics a bit more. There’s actually quite a lot of new and modern features. And harsh high end wasn’t one of them. I can tell you as a one time mic snob, I’m glad I opened my mind up. Thanks for watching 🎉
Seems that new tech is okay but the fact that we like to go and get our hands on an original U47 , C12 or C800G says it all , New doesnt mean always good.
I own a Neumann U47, have done for many years! It's great! I also own and use plenty of other less expensive mics as well that get used all the time. Horses for courses! P.S I also have RCA's, Neumann KM56, AKG C12A and many more! I am lucky to be able to use them all and be able to compare.
After this specific session, I am finding myself using a much more varied blend between new technology mics like these and vintage or vintage inspired mics. Sometimes I just have to prove something to myself first 😂😂 Thanks for watching!
Why is the snare sample so loud? Why bother recording a good musician in a world class studio if you're going to stick a loud, ugly sample right in the middle of it? It peaks so much louder than the rest of the mics! Once he turned it on, it's all you can hear!
Actually it’s quite lower than the real snare. Definitely adding a nice consistency I liked though. If you download the multitracks feel free to not use the sample. We got a really nice snare sound that day! Thanks for watching.
Not at all. It’s a concept and Lewitt and Lauten were kind enough to participate. I haven’t found the Lewitts to have the characteristics you describe. I’m enjoying them and decided to keep most all of them here to go alongside my classics. Best wishes
@@InTheMixJoeCarrell Ok, thanks. There are far too many endorsements going on. Lewitt' basic mics are akg 414 oriented, that is far too bright for a lot of voices. Not a good alround mic, in my opinion.
this has absolutely nothing to do with your title, like almost all of your videos of the past few years, it's disappointing, maybe just actually talk about the issue you bring up, which would make a fascinating discussion with any experienced audio engineer, any, a dude you found on the street that says he recorded a band once, he'd have something to say, instead you guys record a band and use some gimmick doing it trying to rope in obviously sponsored products, and just abandon the admittedly clickbait in the first place title, it's incredibly annoying, I stopped watching because of it and I thought this was a good enough idea to click back on it, and you know what I regret it yet again, your content is getting so stale, and it's not lack of effort, it's lack of expansion, please, find something else to do instead of clickbait titles, "we recorded a band with lauten mics" is what this video is, it has nothing to do with vintage mics at all, literally nothing, objective at least, so why even bring it up?
Hey thank you for being a loyal subscriber it sounds. The idea and concept for this video was mine and just to be clear no money changed hands whatsoever. As a long time working professional who is always eager to evolve and change in the mix room, I admitted to myself that I was pretty hung up and stale in the studio as a Recording engineer. Still fairly obsessed with vintage items in old school technology. And when those items were not available to meet, there was a little bit of an anxious uneasy feeling using things I was unfamiliar with. So I thought it would be fun to challenge myself to throw out every microphone I was used to, and use only models that were new and not re-creating anything from the past. Hopefully that makes sense. I know there are thousands of guys just like me that also have this thought and may want to follow along and download the multi tracks. Obviously not every video and every subject will be for every subscriber. And I’m sorry that you did not connect with this one, but maybe the next one. That said be sure and enter to win that Lewitt Pure Tube!! It’s really a sweet piece of gear. Best wishes. Joe C
Just because it’s recorded doesn’t mean it sounds good. New mics work on some stuff, if you only use new mics, it’s because you’ve never heard older ones or you’re deaf
In my long career I’ve used and owned/own many many many sought after vintage mics. So I can say with quite a lot of confidence, that quite a few new designs can hold their own if we are willing to give them a try. I personally think this recording sounded pretty darn good 😂😂. I guess I’m partial though. Best wishes

Pure Tube mics sounds thin, bright, and sterile to me.
Tested: Where Does The Tone Come From In A Microphone?
That’s a DEEEP convo of components that I’m probably not best equipped to answer! Haha. Thank you for watching and commenting 👊🏼
It's not peaking, it's sustaining
@@TransistorLSDyeah that’s what I hear too 👊🏼 that was the goal anyway. Thanks for watching 🎉
So it is an endorsement for Lewitt mics that are overly bright and hyped...
Yep same for me. Misleading title and same content as always. It’s videos like these that make me wonder why I’m still subbed

Best wishes
I love the lewitt mics the First mic i got was a pure tube for around 150 euro and I like it more than a tlm 102
Thank you for watching !
