    Today, we're shooting out JZ Microphones against Warren's own Vintage Microphone collection! We had our friend and artist, Davon in the studio so Mel and Eric decided to film the entire process whilst shooting out the microphones. The twist? Warren has to guess which microphone is by which company!
    Dayvon is originally from Snellvile GA and moved out to Anaheim CA where he started his musical journey in 2013.
    Since then, he has written and worked with Grammy/Emmy award winner Joe Houge and has played venues such as House of Blues, Chain Reaction, Glass House Pomona in the band Asylus.
    His style is a fusion of many genres such as RnB, Rock, and Pop. Mixing sounds from artists, he takes inspiration from such as Foo Fighters, Kid Cudi, and The Fray.

      Can't say it's my 'favorite' but if I'm using multiple mics on something, I always toss in an MXL Cube that a guy gave me, when I was buying a really old Gibson J45 from him. I didn't even know anything about it before but I often find I like what it does.
      And also the Copperphone frmo PlacidAudio... Not sure how I'd work without having that option.

    Great video, guys, thank you!
    Owning all three of these JZ Mics, and having worked with some of the Neumanns, I called every one of these examples (commenting at 13mins). The give away is the Neumann’s sounded ever so slightly compressed and a little duller (except the brand new U87s).
    JZ Mics are SERIOUSLY good!

    Wow, I thought the difference was really obvious with the tube mics and I called them out correctly every time. That doesn't mean I thought the JZ mics sounded bad, but real tubes do something special. The U87ai and JZ was closer, but found I preferred the U87ai when I finally saw the results. It's fuller with more detail.

    Hi Warren and thank you so much for the great content but I need some advise on a specific microphone I have acquired. It is a Trix ribbon microphone from the 1950’s, I’ve only found one place online that says it’s based on a Reslo VMC microphone from around the same time. I have photos etc but I have no idea how to power/plug this thing in. It has 2 pins on the back and it has a adapter plugged into that but no cable, there is a hole that looks like a cable would be attached but I’m not sure at all (I’m a newbie I know haha) anyway… I really hope you could help me out here thanks

    Actually this blew me away and I am impressed by quality and accuracty of your highly trained ear - there is so much more to creating good sound than just lumping together a bunch of good equipment - it is the mad genius that can create great sounds from it and really has the oral palette of a great chief to hear and distinguish the subtleties of the ingredient sounds that are being mixed served. I by no means detect those subtleties between certain frequency ranges and soundness levels of 1 db - you are a true pro and master. Thank you.

    I noticed the u47 in the vocal example was getting some preamp saturation as well! Hitting it harder than the other mic. I dug it to be honest ;) I’ve got a JZ mic (the 67) and I really love it. It certainly punches well above the price I paid for it. In the vocal example, the u47 was fuller/richer sounding- the JZ highlighted more of the room ambiance around the voice and detailed up top without getting harsh.

    I'm half way through the video, and even with the youtube codec quality I can definitely tell a difference in the mics before the reveal. The JZ mics sound great on their own, but say with the acoustic or the piano the nonJZ mics sound a little richer or more open. Even still, for the price they're still sound great.

    They actually sound very different. I hate to be boring, but I preferred the "expensive ones" on everything with exception of the a-guitar too (which is why I would have guessed that one wrong and assumed it's the expensive one). I didn't think differences would be that big. Of course the comparison wasn't perfect, but I feel like it gave me a good idea nonetheless. Seeing Warren being put to the test was fun and I want more of that!

    You really needed to put the JZ 67 up against the real U67 to hear the difference and whether the JZ67 stands up to the vintage or re-issue U67. I suppose it's a matter of personal preference but since doing a vocal session running the JZ through a Neve 1073 slightly hot and using a LA-2A compressor has now made me want that vocal chain more than I want the re-issue Neumann U67.

      @tom_k_d 2 года назад

      @@Producelikeapro Well, U87ai is a vintage design with expensive discrete components (compared to the Neumann TLM models with SMD PCBs) - and I don't question that thorough reissues like the U67 (wish I had one) can fully match their historic counterparts, too. However, when these designs were new, at least the U87 was not overly expensive... Thanks for the impressive shootout!

    This mic is great, just not looks luxury enough to attract client.

    The JZ mics are a bit thin. It was very obvious which one was which in the tests.
