I have a lot of plugins that I find useful pragmatically, but I haven't had a "wow, this changes everything" moment! with a plugin in the last few years EXCEPT with the Eventide SplitEQ. Softube & Kush Audio really deserve a look if you’re looking for fuzzy analog roundness and character EQ/Comp. They’re amazing & priced well. Blyss EQ by Kush ends up somewhere on every track i make now, and it’s great to have Softube’s Empirical Labs EQ and Distressor comp; there are so many good Softube plugins. Have seen lots of folks talk about Gullfoss, and I use it, though I always try to encourage people to take the ‘less is more’ approach. I usually start around 8% on both main controls, and A/B. If it the sound gets more focused, i leave it there, otherwise i start edging up to around 14-17% max. Will occasionally go higher on individual tracks, but Gullfoss is really best on subgroups or full mixes in small amounts, just enough to take the ‘gauze’ off but not enough to cause damage to a carefully-constructed mix.

There's no such thing as "much learn and own." Listen to 50 interviews with 50 mixers and you'll get 50 different lists. There are a couple on here like Fab Filter Pro-Q3 and Soothe2 that almost everyone uses, but I bet you I could find very successful mixers that don't.

@@rome8180 I recently tried to mix a project with free and or inexpensive plugings and as much as I'd like to say is didn't matter......well, it does. It's like back in the day when you think you can get the same results from the RNC compressor vs the LA2A....its just not gonna happen. That doesn't mean you can't get to 85% of greatness.....it just means....you're at 85%. Thank you so much Warren for your enormously interesting, and highly informative and accurate content.
Just beginning to use my RUclips channel
to post some of the songs I've written for myself and artists that were never intended for release and some not released for various reasons. I give away knowledge of things I've learned and experienced in music and life, but the way you package and present your experience is plum pleasing
and pleasant. Some of my favorite plugins are Waves Rvox and their LinEQ Lowband EQ.The Rvox is an amazingly simple and effective Compressor for Vocals, and getting some of the poorly recorded vocals I do,
I find the LinEQ to be magical in seamlessly removing the pop sibilants and low end noise from people hitting the mic stand, etc .
Again Warren, thank you so much for what you do!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Great Video Warren! I'm working in voice over and podcast business, and aside from eqs and compressors, the one thing I use around 300x per day is a simple lowcut at around 300Hz (bx_cleansweep, typically, cause it saves the settings). Not as an insert, but rather instant-hotkeyed to be used as a direct offline process for plosives, breaths, and lots of typical German language sounds. Incredible how smooth and clean the results are.
Other than that: iZotope RX, Neutron, Ozone, Waves R-Comp, CLA76, SSL Bus Comp & E-Channel, Clarity VX. Oh and for music I absolutely love my RC-20, so easy to overdo!

All those plugins are great choices. I use in conjunction with those makes, UAD, which have some of the best emulations around. The trick with tuning vocals, as mentioned here, is never change the modulation in the waveform, of the vocal. Just move the block up and down, (in the case of using melodyne), this technique applies to other tuning devices, this allows the timbre of the vocal to remain intact for super realistic non-digital results..

Another marvellous, enthusiastic instalment Warren, thanks. I have a lot of these including the full iZotope range. One thing I will say is don’t be tempted to use pirated versions. Buying them helps the birth of the next generation of plugins and also keeps your computer clean of viruses etc. I had the Yamaha DSP2416 with the AX44 breakout panel many moons ago, an amazing PCI card in its day. Very frustrated when they didn’t release drivers for XP, I think Windows 95 was the last driver available which never worked with XP and certainly not Windows 7.

I started my second run (later in my life) music production career almost entirely as a Waves fanatic. But over the past 2 years I've slowly and unabashedly become a Arturia junkie! Their plugins are beautiful, scale beautifully to my 4K displays, sound incredible, have the sickest presets and now rival my Waves and Solid State Logic collections.

As a REAPER user quite a lot of my most used plugins are Reaper only. Including all Tukan plugin, esepcially Sumthing. Other Reaper stuff: Squashman is also awesome. ReEq. I also use Analog Obsession plugins quite a lot: FRANK is always somewhere on my channels, and RARE and FETISH being some of the usual suspects. RARE is to me the best sounding Pultec eq out there.
My most used plugin? the stock RBJ hi/low parse ... use it on allmost all channels. Learning to use especially hi parse(low cut) was a game changer for me. Cannot believe I did not learn that as the first thing ever!
Oh.. must not forget TDR Nova eq... to me one of the best dynamic eq's.

I have found R-Bass indispensable for mixing my band's current studio album. We are a 7 piece ska / reggae band with an acoustic bass player. We recorded the bass with a microphone and direct off his pickups. I'm blending both tracks in the mix as the mic sounds very round and warm, the direct has more attack, so I'm using mostly the mic track with just a touch of the direct track with RBass on it to fill out the sound wonderfully.

@Warren, maybe you could do a video as well about why & when you would use a certain compressor plug-in for which purpose.
I know for example from your teaching that the RVox can give some warmth to the vocal and I would love to know why you choose the other compressors! Also about EQ: Why the Waves REQ at one instance or a Pultec at another?
Keep up the amazing good work! You all rock! Cheers!
