I agree that bobbing, weaving, slipping and ducking are all viable options. Out of curiosity though, what do you think of what Jorge "Gamebred" Masvidal says in this video between 18:00 and 18:20? ruclips.net/video/Bt-Z7D4o2PQ/видео.html

Another great video. I'm glad you demonstrated the difference gloves make and how they minimize angles and cover the center. These boxing techniques fail on the street because most of us will be bare-handed in these scenarios.
Personal preference: I find an intercepting Pak Sao to the lower bicep devastates roundhouses or hooks [and hurts their arm]. The Pak [middle of palm as the "mouth" which contacts] absorbs, disperses the force, redirects through the fingers around to ground. Once force is accepted and absorbed we can easily return it and send the attacker flying. It takes little muscular power, more like a snake or crane style intercept of the lower bicep.
The downside: if not relaxed a Pak does not work... at all. But this is a facet of Wing Chun most do not understand. It is counter-intuitive in this way.
Warning: if training this move; ensure the sparring partner ramps up his force carefully [for their sake]. Done properly, the Pak will damage the attacker if thrown full force, as the arm may sublux or worse. The Pak will leave a deep bruise on the inner arm; so be nice. My nine year old daughter with the exact same relaxed motion was able to stop an adult male roundhouse thrown with power. People don't believe it until they feel the effect [common issue to Wing Chun].
Thank you again for your videos.

You are indeed correct people think wing chun fast offense is its bread and butter same with being close but I actually find stuff like pak sao and especially bong sao to be so darn useful. Especially at distance with more time to react bong sao is so damn good at stopping pesky hooks into a pak sao to send it right back at them. Even though i have no outer muscle with only decent under/latent muscle do to my body type i was stuck with dudes 3 to even 4 times my size struggle to move me in a defensive position.
Bong sao is also amazing for stopping even lightning fast straight punches and jabs also horse stance where you pivot your feet and knees inward while it wont stop you from getting knocked back makes you so grounded that its very hard to pick you up. Also forgot its name i believe it translates to golden rooster in english the thing where you put your leg up is such a good defense and even a good baiting/poking tool that makes you just that much more annoying to deal with especially with the other foot moved inward your still grounded as if normally being loose on two feet.
Three modifications i made to deal with hard punchers with no technique and street fighters was firstly since they seem to love to throw uppercuts along with hook like haymakers when there not throwing haymakers since bong sao stops that dead in its tracks and there going for a uppercut. Keep in mind this is a very precise movement but i love to double palm downward facing the hand downward near your pelvis with one wrist over the other to give the strength of two hand over one hand. This not only stops uppercuts and even groin shots if you time it right but you can use the momentum of there punch letting your hands fly up after the block pull them back in and then strike outward in a double palm to a weak section of the torso the chin or the face.
The other two were one incorporating boxing hooks and uppercuts myself to get even more anglework as well as there footwork when i'm not using the horse stance such as a fast paced exchange. And third and final muay thai style clenches with knees and elbows which while wing chun has these not to the degree i use them. Obviously this is only if you get very close and know you still will lose the exchange as a last resort like a boxer clenching in the ring except you can actually hit back.

Thank you for the explanation. I have struck at the inner side of elbows or biceps a lot to block punches. I did not say "block;" I said "strike" aggressively. It works as long as you are not just blocking passively.

Hi, thanks for watching. There are many ways to get the job done. The aggressiveness of the incoming punch, the speed, the angle, the body posture, and the relative strength and reach between opponents play huge factors on whether a certain technique will work or not. Efficiency being important to me, my goal is not only to achieve my desired outcome, but also to try to burn the least gas possible while doing it. But, if you found something that works for you, why would you switch it?

Just ran into your channel today. Would you have any video on defense against uppercut?

I’ve actually tried this in some hard sparring while in the box. The gan sau works very well with uppercuts. go look at Roberto Duran although he has no wing chun background a lot of what he does is similar to chi sao. Just goes to show people should never judge a martial art because there’s always something you can use and apply even if it is just a concept.
