This is Tuomas' suicide note after the breakup with Tarja, their first lead vocalist. He said that either he put this to song, or do the deed. I'm glad he wrote this song.

Interestingly enough this seems to be more Nighwish fandom folklore than anything else. In a recent interview -- from Metal Hammer last month -- he stated that at no point he ever suffered from suicidal ideation during that period in his life.

@@forkless No, it’s not “ folklore.” Despite what he may say now…in THIS interview, at about the 10:20 mark, he very literally says this song was his suicide in a song “so I wouldn’t have to do it in real life.”

@@forkless, It was not that he was ever suicidal, you're right that part I think is internet overstatement and misinterpretation, but it was about his internal conflict and heartbreak over the decision to cut Tarja and the intensely sad depressive time he wrestled with after. Of course like all art, I'm sure he used plenty of artistic drama in creating this masterpiece! So good!

This is possibly Toumas’ absolute masterpiece. Although sung first by Anette, Tuomas himself has confirmed it has taken Floor to fully project the emotion of the piece. Plus Floor takes on all the vocals that Anette could not do, leaving the boy treble only for the introduction. Floor articulates the emotion. She LIVES every nuance of feeling. Any doubts on this watch this on mute. Silly as it may seem you don’t actually have to hear Floor to see the emotion of the piece. WOW your look to ‘sparkle my scenery’ . There is no shame in being reduced to tears by Pacific, or Mother and Father. From the end, the death of his friendship (Tarja), his ‘baby’ (Nightwish) and even himself, to the beginning, redemption , a new start, this is EPIC. Tuomas’ bravery in exposing his emotional nakedness, to his genius in telling the tale in such a wonderful ‘song’ is quite peerless.

When I saw this reaction go up yesterday I had to give myself a little time to prepare for it.This is Nightwish's most personal and most brutal song, By now you have heard about the reasons Tuomas felt he had to write it. It is almost literally his suicide note, he felt that writing this was his only alternative to killing himself for real. It moves me to tears every time I hear it, and Tuomas could not bear to hear it played without the vocals being removed from his headphones. I love the way Marko and Emmpu move to stand with Tuomas protectively. Tarja too was extremely hurt about the way her expulsion from the band was handled. It took a decade and a half before some of the people involved said a word to each other again. This song, along with Ghost Love Score and The Greatest Show on Earth are called The Big Three by the fandom. The latter two still bring me to tears every time (for very different reasons.) I look forward to seeing you continue your Nightwish journey and in particular look forward to your reaction to TGSOE. Have a good day!

Love that songs Thomas was in a dark place when he wrote it and in an interview he sais that he sometimes ask for the lyrics to be removed from his earpiece and you can see Marko and Emppu going and checking on him.. In the whispering part when she say "3 minutes and counting" after exactly 3 minutes the blade falls and the song gets to the last part where he used direct words of what his mother told him .. • @frenkwd1

    Hello Emma.
The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is guilt for what happened, there is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen.
However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does.
The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly.

For me this is Tuomas's Magnum Opus, written in his darkest hours and weeks after having to split with Tarja (too much back story to the song, that is painful even now to read in its entirety, everybody was hurt at the time) The Poet is rarely performed live so having this concert captured forever makes it very very special. I cannot hear it without crying, and between the dark passion play and Mother and Father Tuomas symbolically cuts his own throat and I often find myself doing the same, without even seeing it I know exactly when it is coming up. In the spoken part it says I have 3 minutes and counting, it is exactly 3 minutes

My number 1. What will Emma make of it. 🍿
Yes it is Guy Elliott who does White Lands and the spoken parts.
This was on the first Anette album and she foes a decent job bug could never have done this. Sone of the parts were choral on the original but Floor took them on.
In the demo it was even angrier, the lyrics harder and Marco did all the vocals.
Lots to say that I'll leave to others. But get the tissues out for Pacific and for Mother and Father - the words of Tuomas' mother as he went through this tough time.
And those last three phrases are heartbreaking, achingly beautiful.
Note that the guys can go over to support Tuomas - Floor can't so she looks over for several seconds before her usual Thank You instead of saying it immediately.

In SHORT - this is there most personal song its about Tuomas after the open letter to the world about the firing of 1st singer Tarja , He had deep depression from the backlash . This is an on stage suicide by Tuomas to help him put the pain behind , Note the part "I have but 3 min" exactly 3 min is when he kills himself. the last part (Mother & Father) are words said to him by his parents then at the very end Emppu & Marco stand next to him to for support.

Hi Emma! I always like your NW reactions, i've seen all of them and i was hoping that this song would be one of your next reactions. Tuomas wrote this after the first singer Tarja and NW split and it was a very hard time for the band, the fans (me too) and specially for Tuomas. He and Tarja know each other from childhood on and they were very good friends. It was a very dark and hard time for him but writing this song helped him to come out from his depression. I really like this song. What i know NW record the Symphonic parts with the London Symphonics and the boy who sings in the begin was Guy ...?... from a London Child Choir, but i'm not 100% sure. Floor did always a great job and i love her voice. I hope one of your next reactions is maybe "The Siren", "Weak Fantasy" or "The Greatest show in Earth" (the last 2 from Tampere '15) because you know the band now better and you heared enough NW songs i think. I would prefer for "The Greatest show...." the Tampere '15 version because it's one of my favorite version from this song (Tampere '15 and Wembley '15 are my 2 fav.). Tampere '15 is an outdoor conzert and they can do things outdoor they couldn't do indoor, i don't write more. 😉

This is one musical piece with a lot of sections. You understand music enough to break at the transitions to talk about the previous part. But in doing so without going back a bit you break it up in seemingly unrelated parts. The song takes you on an emotional journey and the mood swings and timings are an integral part of this song and much of Tuomas' work. (tip: pressing 'j' will take you back 10 seconds)

But I would also have a very small point of criticism. With this video, unfortunately, the picture was so small that only half of the subtitle could be seen.Of course we Nightwish fans know the songs and the lyrics, but other people will certainly see your videos and they don't know the lyrics yet.Greetings Kelsea

To understand the story of this composition, you must watch "The Open Letter" which explains from Tuomas and the bands perspective what led to the breakup with Tarja. See link below.
FYI: All sexual references are being used metaphorically in this song.
"I cannot die. A whore for the whole world". This line refers to how Tuomas felt a responsibility to provide great musical compositions to all of his fans. A this point in his musical relationship with Tarja he felt that his musical efforts were being sold for the $$$$. Music is so much more to Tuomas. It comes from his soul and the money is always secondary to his artistic integrity. Thus he felt he was whoring himself artistically. As he stated in "The Open Letter", Tarja no longer felt the emotion in his compositions and did not bring this to life in his music. She was already moving on in her own musical pursuits. Thus sex without love is a metaphor for music without passion. Tuomas was Tarja's whore musically. He gave his soul/body (music) for $$$ and Tarja enjoyed the sexual act (musical stardom) without the passion required to bring meaning to his compositions and hard work.
"Mother and Father" is actually his parents consoling him regarding his ordeal. The music sounds somewhat like a funeral dirge. Yet it also gives hope for moving forward and healing to allow for a new beginning. I think that Tuomas needed to write this opus to allow for him to bury this episode to enable himself to move forward with the new Nightwish and rekindle his dream. This was a way for him to rid himself of the mental anguish and leave behind the first incarnation of Nightwish.
IMHO, I envision Tuomas' severed piece of his soul crying out from the grave. Represented by by Floor's haunting chant at the ending. The lament.

Fyi...the original demo was sung ALL by Marco as they were between singer after Tarja was let go. Shows his range. Fyi two... In exactly 3 minutes TO THE SECOND from the line in the voiceover the Pendulum falls. In a 14 minutes song. Live. Crazy tight band ..

Hi Emma, I won't go to deep into the reason for this song. It was Tumos firing Tarja and what she did before and after. This song is his Emotional Suicide. Its very rare its preformed. If you noticed everyone coming up to Tumos? They were asking, "Are you Ok?". Most bands are families. Formed over love of music. I'm a Rhyme Guitarist. I know how it feels.
I'm also part of the Nightwish Army. I don't know how far down the rabbit hole you have gone. Since I just found you I have to check out your Channel. Judging from the reaction you had to Marco, you haven't heard too many. Marco left the band for some reasons I won't go into. He wrote a letter but, it doesn't cover the whole story. Let's just say I believe he will be back in time.
I have not checked the channel yet. So I'm shooting in the Wind. You found Nightwish. Soon it will be Epica, Sabaton and Ayeron. 2 of these have direct connections to Nightwish.
As a side note. Please backup your video 10 or so seconds, you or your audience may miss something. Yes, you pause way to much. However, Everyone who has vocal training does that. Main thing is to go back 10-20 seconds.
Either way, I'll check out your channel and give some recommendations.
Welcome to the Rabbit Hole. 😎👍🍻

This song is masterpiece but Tuomas hates this song. That's why this song - as I remember - just played twice.
The part you see Emmpu has conversation with Toumas, Emmpu just check Toumas is fine because this song is so emotional for him.

Great reaction, though I think you seemed a little bit too happy all the time considering the subject and the words of the song. The severe depression and suicidal thoughts Tuomas Holopainen went through after firing Tarja in 2005. The incident caused a huge hullabaloo around the world. The fans and the media attacked him and even the then Prime Minister of Finland had to comment on the case. - I love the way Marko and Emppu move close to Tuomas at the end as if to support him and how Floor looks at him tenderly for a long time after the song has finished.
