I wanted to let you all know that I was okay. After shutting down the video, I had myself a pretty good cry. I couldn't even bring myself to talk about what I was feeling and thinking at the end of the video. The pain that Tuomas went through was literally unbearable and I felt it to my soul. I am still sad to know that he, or any human being, would ever be in that dark of a place. I am grateful he has moved past that into lighter, happier days.
I expected this to hit me emotionally but not quite as hard as it did. I also know I said I didn't even want to upload it but I'm better with that now. I'm not happy about it but I'm at peace with it. I am certainly grateful Tuomas did this through his music instead of in his actual life. He is a deep soul, like the ocean he loves so much. I'm much of the same with the ocean as he is and hearing the waves of the ocean tonight will have a different feel for me.
These are the things I would have said at the end of the video but I couldn't. I hope you understand.

Debbie, you might want to watch "7 Days to the Wolves" at Wembley next. You will see the biggest smile on Tuomas' face when he watch's Floor sing. He is in a happy place now. And he's windmilling so much at the end I was so afraid his keyboard was going to fall over. We all have our dark times and places but Tuomas has come through his and has created some of his best music ever. He has come out of his dark time and has risen like a phoenix!

It's an extremely emotional song - as I come from London, all I can say is that I'm gutted I missed this concert at Wembley in 2015 because I didn't get into them until early 2020. Pity you don't live in London, I would've gladly given you my spare ticket as my Brother couldn't make it for the Nightwish show (again at Wembley) in November 2022. Take good care of yourself 😃

also worth to say that Tuomas has said he is an empath so all of the emotions others may feel were felt as though they were his own
Floor is a highly sensitive person and she was feeling everything and avoids eye contact with Tuomas A highly sensitive person (HSP) is someone who is thought to have an increased or deeper central nervous system sensitivity to physical, emotional, or social stimuli. i think she has also stated she is an empath as well makes this and every song that much more touching

This song is therapy, and about a new beginning. It starts with “the end” which is Tuomas leaving the dark unhappy place he was in behind. The song ends with “the beginning” of a new happy future in front of him! While this song is difficult to listen to, especially at first, it is a beautiful masterpiece that should be celebrated as Tuomas conquering his demons and coming out better for it!
With Easter coming up in a few weeks, remember that it too has a similar emotionally difficult story with Jesus dying on the cross to conquer sin and to create a new beginning where we are saved!
Don’t get me wrong I’m only saying that sometimes the most emotionally difficult stories (and songs) turn out to be what we cherish and respect the most. I feel this song is something that Nightwish fans truly respect and cherish which is why we continue to listen and cry to it every chance we get. It keeps us grounded and connects us. I hope someday you too will be willing to listen to it again!

I think that one of the most important lines in this song is "1000 pages of erased text". IMO this refers to all his songs he had written for Tarja that he felt he had lost, after all, who could sing them like Tarja. Then along came Floor, I don't think it is a coincidence that they had the Decades tour bringing back some of the old songs from the Tarja era. I think that Floor made Thuomas believe he had his songs back. This is all my conjecture of course but I don't think I am far off.

The Complex Problems, Division and the Feelings between the Tuomas and his old Friend Tarja one of the founders of NightWish which reached the Breaking Point causing her Split from the Band Hurt them All, Then it was Played Out in the Media, The Fans Split and took Sides. It played on Tuomas till it Left him Empty. Anette came to Replace "Tarja", "Anette" was a Good Vocalist, but her range was Different less Dynamic, The Fans did not take to Her Style and Range most of the Music was written for "Tarja", NightWish had to Change to Fit "Anette" there was some Good and Bad to Come in the Years Leading to 2012. I think Floor Saved Nightwish, She was so Versatile in Her Vocal Talent and Skills she brought Back the Old Music and Mastered the New, This Freed Tuomas to Create New Arrangements for the Old and take on New Projects, Then add Troy, The Whole Band Just Came Alive for the Fans "Wacken 2013" is the Proof.

But in that way he provides a catharsis and emotional cleansing for both himself and those lucky enough to hear it.
I think Floor's magical abilities with her voice make her the only singer who could possibly convey the depth of emotion that this song calls for, and I like to believe that it was this that gave Tuomas the courage to see it performed as it is.
I can so well understand why you would need some time to yourself after the video, and to yet again extend a huge hug from all of us in the Nightwish Army (of which you have become a vital part, BTW).

I think if you look at this song from the perspective of how it ends...with the beginning...you see that it isn't a tragedy, at all, it's a song of redemption. Those words in the final section "Mother and Father" are pretty much a direct quote from his mom.
The final section is SO important because, with the final section, you see it's not a song about Tuomos killing himself at all, It's a song about facing the darkness, and going home to find people who really love you there, people who will reach out a hand and help you through whatever you're going through.
The idea that there are people who love you enough to pull you through.
To help you to a new beginning. "The beginning."
The song in its entirety is Tuomas ripping his ribcage open and letting you examine all the hidden bits on the inside, in all it's horror (Sections 2 and 4) ...and all it's beauty (Sections 2 and 5) It's important to note that it ends (or, as the song says, begins) with beauty.

    *The poet and the pendulum*
What a song, what a content, what an emotion, goosebumps...
You know the backstory of Tuomas Debbie... you just can't help but cry 🥹
Floor's voice can really touch people so well because she also puts emotion in her voice!
By the way, all band members have made a fantastic contribution!
    This makes you silent....
    The images are also impressive.

    Oh, God.
Freakin' wrecks me every damn time. My favorite bit is the end (Mother and Father). Floor's plaintive, weeping vocal. When Tuomas mouths the words. "Try to save them all. Bleed no more." Oh, man. You know, it's the Jesus thing. Once all souls are saved, Jesus won't have to bleed any more. As the poet bleeds for his art. Powerful stuff. Great react, Debbie.

I am also glad that Tuomas found a way out of that dark place. To bring himself to put that emotion into his art took a lot of courage. It doesn't surprise me that they don't perform this song anymore...it must be heart-wrenching for him to live through that every time. Thank you for the reaction...now onto a more uplifting one next, okay? Cheers!

The best part of this song..... the part that really gets me, is the line "try to save them all, bleed no more"....... in the line before this, Marko sings perfect harmony, but on this line, Floor goes up while Marko descends..... not really sure why this gets me, but it's less the lyric and more the perfect composition, musically.

This song always emotionally affected Tuomas, which is why they never play this anymore. He wanted Floor to perform this, but after they did it a few times he pulled it from the setlist. He is the happiest I have ever seen him, even back in the early Tarja days. He smiles lots now, and his smile makes me almost as happy as Floor's. He considered it therapeutic getting his emotions out. Floor breathed new happy life back into Nightwish, and they did the same for her after her year and a half burnout.

    Great reaction👍🏻
I love how Tuomas borrowed ideas from The Pit and The Pendulum, a short story written in 1842 by Edgar Allan Poe. The story deals with the psychological torment of a prisoner in the Spanish Inquisition who is publicly tortured and executed for opposing the Catholic Church. He finds himself in a rat-infested, darkened room with slippery sloped floors leading to a Pit, with a swinging Pendulum above. The Pit signifies Death, the Pendulum represents Time and the sloped floors, rats and darkness symbolise Fear. An awesome adaptation to music. Genius!
The protagonist of the story opposed the Catholic Church as he despised God for taking away his birth mother, adopted mother and wife with plague and disease.
I personally believe that Toumas's torment wasn't because he fired Tarja from the band but because his so-called fans publicly tortured and executed him for doing it the way he did. I also believe the score was arranged into 5 separate chapters to signify the 5 stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance).

  • @NickBR57
    @NickBR57 Год назад +2

Well, that hit hard. Don't say you'll never listen again - it is worth the feelings it arouses.
Tuomas is a vey special person and this is, for me, the pinnacle of his work.
    Nothing surpasses it.
For him it is one of the deepest songs.
TUOMAS: We will never play "Bye Bye Beautiful" or "Master Passion Greed" live again, [sic] because the lyrics are just too unambiguous and personal. There was at least as much gloom behind "The Poet and the Pendulum", too, but it leaves a bit more room for interpretation. It's easily one of our best songs but especially, the "Mother and Father'" part in the end always stirs up such a storm of emotions that it's impossible for me to do it every night. Playing "The Poet and the Pendulum' is a real rollercoaster ride - it makes me feel anxious, blush, laugh, and, in the end, just happy that that part of my life is behind me.
    My notes:
My number 1 Nightwish song and for good reasons.
(No 2, Song of Myself, No 3 7 Days to the Wolves.)
This is a deeply emotional and meaningful song with which I empathise and it helped me to see that there was a way forward when depression struck. I am not alone in being "saved" by Nightwish, a fact that Tuomas has referred to and said he could not terminate the band because he knows they have meant so much to some fans who feel their lives have been saved by Nightwish.
He feels that he has a responsibility to the fans - not your standard rock musician then.
Floor is worth watching closely, her facial, hand and whole-body motions reflect the emotions she is portraying. Hands in Mother and Father for example. Tearing her hair in the Dark Passion Play section.
Note that when Tuomas talks about "Poet" he is always referencing himself. It happens throughout his ouvre.
You will see other cross-references too. Tuomas does that deliberately to give the fans a sort of anchor. Meadows of Heaven is another example - a song in itself and often referenced.
For what it's worth, here are are my thoughts and interpretations...
End to beginning - death of one era of the band, beginning of a new era.
Regarding the end of the first Era, I see no point in the blame game.
The band split, that is all we need to know.
Whatever the causes there was bound to be emotion on both sides so I leave it at that.
But this masterpiece is what came out of Tuomas' emotions.
The beginning is a boy soprano, Guy Elliott who also does the spoken parts.
Then we get the whole section "Home".
I see the "shoulder cries more" as having no shoulder to cry on because the other members of the band - his friends - were equally upset.
The "whore for the cold world" I see as the selling of his whole life to the music industry (the metaphorical pimps, hence the "whore" references) which is not interested in the person only what they can get from the band.
The two faces bit is self explanatory; almost everyone will have been in situations where they have to hide their feelings and present a false front to the world.
The reference to betrayal is again obvious and there are lots of metaphors in the surrounding words. The altar I think, is the tie to the band - these upheavals in 2004/5 were not the first time Tuomas had felt like ending the band.
By the way, note the 3 minutes and counting: exactly 3 minutes later you get the guillotine motion. Exactly 3 minutes.
Marco made the demo version of this, with all the lyrics sung by himself and with harsher lyrics at points too.
Next we get to the Mother and Father section with Floor, Marco and Emppu all sitting, while Floor sings lyrics reflecting the words from his mother when he went back home for a break in the middle of all this turmoil.
These are the words of love and then of advice, that he was given.
Floor here is using her finger movements to accentuate emotion.
This whole section and the way Floor sings it, is packed with those damned Onion Ninjas.
We end with the final ethereal notes from Floor and here is another tingle-factor moment. Then a gentle piano ending, the calm after the emotional storm.
Here, as in Sparkle my Scenery, the choir on the original album is replaced by Floor who wanted to sing them herself (and proved completely capable of it) which Anette could not have done - she could probably get the notes but the emotion is there in the choral original and is amplified when Floor sings it.
    On the performance itself:
When Emppu goes over to Tuomas and later both Marco and Emppu go over, it is a sign of moral support. They both know how difficult this is for him - eventually he had the vocals turned off in his in-ear, so he didn't have to listen to them because Floor put such emotion into them.
At the end, she does not say "Thank you" immediately, as she does normally. Instead she looks over for a few seconds to check on him from her position.
BTW, I have never bought the theory that Tuomas was "in love" with Tarja. Those who say he asked her to join the band because he knew her from school - she was suggested by Emppu who had known her as an acquaintance at school.

I think the album “Dark Passion Play” was the catharsis Tuomas needed to come to terms with the whole situation and save himself from getting in a deep dark hole. Luckily he did. And this was the end of an old and the beginning of a new era. Less tension, less turmoil, a new found horizon, a freed mind for writing new songs, two consecutive albums, Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum, who sold as never before. The start of the reborn Tuomas and Nightwish.

more than that. he was going to break down during Mother, Father because of those words. Apparently he stated that if he heard them, he would start crying himself. Thie story behind this song always seemed so tragic to me because everyone involved was terribly hurt. There were no bad guys, just a frustrating lack of communication. There has. They talk amicably, regarding business. Prime example is that 2 years ago, Nightwish re-released her last album with the band, Once. They needed Tarja's permission to re-release that album. With Tarja being friends with Floor (Floor asked Tarja for permission to join Nightwish, if that tells you anything), and Marko patching things up with Tarja, there is at least some easing of tensions. All have moved on, but unfortunately, this entire fiasco is immortalized in 4 songs which will outlive everyone.
