The "burning" is crucial. In Germany we call it "Röst Aroma" means the flavor you get from letting it get slightly "burned" but not "burned like going up in flames" 😂
Actually these stews taste best when they are warmed up the next day
Röstaroma. Definitiv besser als Restaroma...
That's interesting- and agree they taste better the next day :)
😂 definitely dont let it go up in flames! 🙌🏾 completely agree! let those flavors hang out together overnight makes different flavor and aroma compounds mingle together and develop more seasoned notes! 🤤
Congratulations Chris Paul. That’s why you’re still in the NBA, for eating healthy. But take off that fake beard, you’re not fooling anyone
My Bavarian great grandmother also taught me a way to soak the beans, and dry toast them, dry with herbs and seeds in a hot iron pan before adding water for the cook-down even is commenced
One of the few non Indians with the correct explanation for the type of daal used in this Indian recipe and the soaking technique. Red masoor is one of the easiest to cook and may not even need soaking. Thanks for being authetic, chef!
You’re teaching people recipes but also how to cook. Even for us experienced cooks, it is helpful. Cooking exciting vegan and vegetable dishes is a rare skill in this country imho. Excited to try this!
I agree-as a culture we are losing the skill (cooking) and people are sacraficing their health because they are busy- sadly.
🥹 this is exactly what i needed to hear today! thank you so much ❤️🫶🏾
@@thenarddogcooks Yay! Happy Holidays to you and your family! Thanks for spreading the good cheer all year long!
This is the biggest reason why some of my friends and family don't want to try vegan food, they have to prepare it! They get fast food, convenience food, or just a hunk of meat because "easy" but the problem is they are all starting to also see the health impacts - heart disease, cancer, excessive iron in the blood, inflammation and IBS. I'm hoping to do some sort vids for my family for Veganuary and I'll be making some of Andrew's recipes for sure! Thank you ❤
What are the measurements?
I am not vegan, but i always wanted to reduce my meat intake a bit. easy recipes like this really make me want to try more vegan stuff out!
You can also slowly switch to vegetarianism instead of veganism.
I went vegetarian shortly before thanksgiving…I haven’t looked back. I feel better…and I’m no longer responsible for any animals being hurt, which was my main reason for making the change.
@@reasbeyhi! it is definitely progress to not consume any meat anymore and being vegetarian but claiming to not be responsible for any animals being hurt is simply very wrong :/ the dairy industry is extremely horrendous (i'd suggest you read into it!), as are other industries ofc. But props to you for taking the step and becoming vegetarian :) Hope you are still feeling as good as you did when writing that comment.
@@reasbeycrops kill way more animals, i dont know why you think you hurt no animals. Get over it, we live and die
I do not just love all your amazing recipes but I just absolutely love your way of filming. Watching the cooking process like that is just so therapeutic
Back-handed ass compliment
I do enjoy the sciency stuff quit a lot! Knowing why we do things in a certain way is not only interesting, but it also helps with integrating these lessons in other dishes as well. Keep being awesome Andrew!
🙌🏾 Love that! I will keep in mind as we keep this journey going together 🙏🏾
As an Indian, I love this red lentil dal recipe😄Found your channel about a month ago,so glad I did.Thank you for your recipes. Love the vibes & aesthetic of your videos💜
This guy is awesome - super simple + healthy. Going to make this right now - THANK YOU Andrew!!
🙌🏾 thank you so much!!
One of my favorite cooking channels! Thanks for explaining the benefits to soaking lentils. Here’s to better digestion 🙏🏻
🥹 this helped make my day!! ❤️🙌🏾
"According to a bean scientist I talked to, cold-soaking beans does nothing to remove those sugars and even hot-soaking (the so-called “quick-soak” method) doesn't reduce them by enough to make a difference. You'd have to hot-soak repeatedly to get rid of an appreciable amount." LA Times
Man…..I could almost taste the depth of flavor just looking at this dish 😋.
😍 🙌🏾
As an Indian, I love you explaining that dal means lentil (and chai means tea)!
But he is somewhat wrong; in many regions "dal" mostly commonly refers to the split version of the whole or dried versions of legumes.
Thank you SO much for mentioning that Roasted Peppers could be substituted for Tomatoes - my family has an allergy to tomatoes, so we are always struggling for substitutes for tomato paste, tomato sauce, and tomatoes. We can make mushroom catsup to substitute for ketchup, but looking for substitutes for other issues. We know we can use tapioca starch instead of corn starch and cane syrup or simple syrup for dark or light corn syrup to deal with that allergy, and appreciate the tips on getting creamy textures without dairy, as corn and dairy are also allergies here. Thanks for all your tips!
🙌🏾 amazing to hear this! you know sometimes im just not sure if it is even going to help anyone when i provide certain tips. i feel a great sense of happiness when it does! ❤️
Pro tip: get sambar powder. Just add in your washed lentils + veggies of your choice + 2 glasses of water + 2-3spoons of sambar powder + salt. Add lemon at the end, and you are done. Try to steam your veggies and that gives a completely diff flavour
This is the second vid of yours I’ve come across in the past couple days. Love the way you structure your videos!
I love your recipes and especially your love for life (the "good"), flavor and nutrition. Timely recipe! I just spent a lot of time scribbling notes on what I did to make a homemade coconut spinach dal recipe duped from [rhymes with Mole 'Tudes] less salty, more fresh and more delicious/spicy. I also looked at a lot of Indian chefs/RUclipsrs for inspiration. This is the first time I have ever learned about the benefits of pre-soaking red lentils and I am so grateful! I always like your discussion after the video narration, yet today was super-informative. Excellent channel!
My Afro-Latino Ancestors would soak the beans for so many years and I never knew why. I thanks them for this knowledge and you for explaining it.
seems our ancestors are always so ahead of there time, right!? love them! ❤️
@@thenarddogcooks Love them too!!! I am back to soak my beans again.
Your recipes are great- but I also love how beautiful you make your videos- cooking is an art and I love how you make that clear! Cheers!
Thank you so so much 😊
Agreed!! 👍🏻
I do not just love all your amazing recipes but I just absolutely love your way of filming. Watching the cooking process like that is just so therapeutic
💆♀😄
🙌🏾 thanks a ton!! 🙏🏾❤️
Yes! I love watching him cook, it's very relaxing!
I love the way you made this video, so precise and well structured, put the 'how to' in the beginning without any unnecessary information followed by 'the talk' for more in depth dive about the dish. Instantly subbed this is how it should be done. Thank you so much! 🙏
Had to return here after cooking this recipe. Sooo delicious, thank you ...
😍 already!!! I LOVE THAT!!! ❤️
Super easy and simple, I love the way you presented it!
Thank you sooooo much!!! I've always thought I'm terrible at cooking and that I can't cook anything nice. I made this meal and I was so surprised! It's given me hope that I can actually cook. #
I love your channel! 🤩

The Nard is a real cook and I have subscribed and want to LEARN! Thank you so much! Will send photos and rate as I cook! 🎉
I found you a couple of weeks ago it that, and I love your videos. Simple easy to follow healthy recipes and a bonus afterwards if we want more explanation we just keep on listening.😊
I made this. It tastes just like you’d expect a good Indian Dal would taste…delicious. The recipe is right. I will make it kind of often. I think it’s so easy you could make a veg curry to have with it for more variety on your plate. Good for making ahead to eat on work nights.
Your videos heal my soul. Thank you
The process of Mise en place is definitely one of the most important things when cooking. It basically eliminates a majority of ones stress. Great channel, bro. Appreciate you.
Great video. Will make this tomorrow. Cheers
I'm stoked to cook for this
Thank you for your healthy recipes and positive energy🙏🏻🎄
OH WOW!!! 🥰 you're the best! thank you!
I only used half the coconut milk and it turned out great for my lunch! Thank you!
Great explanation of the recipe and the “burning” of the spices. I’m a big meat eater but I’m definitely going to try this. You earned yourself a subscriber man.
just made it. Will do it again. Tastes great!
I love this so much! The whole family did too
Thank you 😊
Thanks for the enriching video today. Looking forward to revisiting soon!
Almost all Indian's eat daal with rice and roti in meal time and this is so powerful meal 💪🏻😋
The nard dog knows how to cook. No talking. Only sizzle with the music.
Thank you for sharing how to prepare this lovely meal😋
Oh!! The perfect program: appealing teacher, soothing and beautiful set and attention to detail in the cooking. Thank you so much and Happy New Year blessings!
Better digestion 😮! All for it
Had most of the more common ingredients in the pantry. Amazing recipe even omitting some; sooo good! Thank you.
Oh, nice. It’s being made tonight!
🙌🏾 enjoy!!! ❤️
This is exactly how I make my lentils!! So delicious and filling ❤ cheers to health!
Congratulations from Italy! Your channel is amazing. Thank you so much for your wonderful recipes!
Delicious and thank you
Looks yummy! Thanks for sharing another great, budget-friendly, recipe!!!!
You are so welcome! 🙌🏾
Looks so comforting just all the yummy spices and thick creaminess. You just wanna make a cup of tea grab your book and forget everybody else exist while you eat.
I love the format of this video!
🙌🏾🙏🏾 really appreciate that!!
Made a low sodium version and it was wonderful. Will be making this again!
Your video tutorials are superb! Thanks for all of your hard work and effort! 💗💗💗
Your video was incredibly eye-opening. It shed light on a topic I had little knowledge about.
I love red lentils!!! This looks like an awesome recipe.
Made this for dinner last night, sooooo good!
Looks lovely, 4 things I would do differently - 1. use spanish onions, 2. add tomato after onions turn brown followed by salt, 3. add spice after tomato is cooked and oil separates & 4. add coconut milk after the dal is cooked and let it come to a boil again.
I agree with you!
Love lentils. Never used with coconut milk. Will give it a try.
Awesome video! Thanks! Ioved your your presentation and instructions!
I have made this recipe before. It is one of my favorites that I have on regular rotation.
Subscribed! 😊❤
Yum! Thank you for the recipe and the fun watching the sneaky baby whisk! 😁

This looks so good! The coconut milk did it for me!
Wow, will try! Subscribed! Great great channel!
I just made this and it was my first time cooking with lentils. It was absolutely delicious bro thanks for sharing!
Absolutely delicious! ❤
Wow!! I just watched this and think I love this style of cooking video!😮😃👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻. Something very satisfying about no talking while cooking but seeing everything happen with typed ingredients as they go in!
And nice hearing the sounds of the spices as they roll in. Great style and I also appreciated the explanation on everything afterwards! Learned things I didn’t know about the soaking & why🤓
LOVE IT ALL!!! And recipe looks delicious too!🎉
This is incredibly aesthetic ❤
This was delicious. Probably the most flavoursome one pot dal i've tried yet.
India is a paradise for vegetarians.
will try
Looks great, and I never knew that you should soak lentils for a couple hours. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
Omg made this today!! It was so good I couldn't stop eating ...
Thanks for the recipe…Im addicted now…🙈🙈❤
Sir, this looks ultra delicious! thanks.
Dinner tonight!!! Thanks!
The is was incredibly delicious!
as an indian i approve!!! so well done
Nice videography! That was a pleasure to watch.
Oh my gosh.we made it with brown lentils and it was fabulouso!!!!
On top of brown rice . Homerun!!!
Love coconut milk. This looks delicious ❤
That looks really good 👍
This is absolutely delicious! I now just go to your website when looking for recipes instead of googling.
Thank you.
Great job! As much as one may not need to soak red masoor, given that pulses and grains have phytic acid which is an anti-nutrient this reducing bioavailability/absorption of minerals, it would be a good move to soak these too for 10-15mins.
This was delicious good looks
As soon as I saw the first few seconds I was in. Great vid. Subscribed immediately.
Love it. You're awesome.
Looks amazing
Pick your "preference"?
Thank you for this I'm salivating and excited for my lentils.
😂 thats it! thank you!!
Thank you for sharing. I LOVE lentils. I usually eat 5-7 meals a week with a main "base" of lentils. We have been "stir frying" with tumeric and ginger root. I wonder if you have considered adding some grains, like farrow, quinoa, or rice? I am way under 1:1, perhaps even 5:1. Looking forward to trying this recipe. (My other mainstays are chick peas, black beans, and kidney-what I can get dry in bulk, though lupine, for a snack, were a 25+ day ordeal.)
Thanks!
Hi, I am new to your cooking channel and after watching you cooking lentils, I made it myself. I am really happy with the result, it is so yummy. I will have meals for the next few days. Thank you!!! Watching from Queensland, Australia.
Thank you for the wonderful recipe! From Japan❤
Believe in good!!!...nice one...txs❤
Yeaaa! The spice bottle drag is back! 😁 And yes, indulge in some science-y stuff every now and then. 👍
Just found your channel. Love you already ❤... & your voice!! ✨️ ✌️
