    One thing that makes the image more grainy is that you have set pretty high sharpening and 0 (zero) masking. If you have zero masking, lightroom sharpens the whole image, even flat homogeneous surfaces. Click Alt-key and slide the masking higher to see what areas you want to aply the sharpening to, you would want it to sharpen only around the actual stars, not the sky area around the stars.

    • @Jimmy_Cavallo
      @Jimmy_Cavallo 5 лет назад

      Morten Almkvist Sounds great. How do you tell where it’s sharpening the image.??

    For people moaning about this - a digital camera grabs light data (from the sensor) and then the camera or raw converter program (LR in this case) applies a bunch of rules to display as an image which is just an interpretation of the raw data. In it self that doesn't look like what your eyes see (which is only the brains interpretation of light anyway - hence colour blindness). All Yuri has done he is changing the interpretation of this raw data, he hasn't added in extra data (which is what people think of as photoshopping). All he is doing is enabling the monitor to display the data that the camera actually captured, it is the data from the photograph. Personally I don't see it as cheating (but that is an opinion) and if you feel that the camera's interpretation of the light data (which is really the programmer's interpretation) is correct then so be it.

    • @WormasCZ
      @WormasCZ 7 лет назад +5

      Robert Whittaker I don't think that this is cheating, but it sort of is and I understand people who say so. For me it is because of all these masks, like "lets put here some green, orange there...", it's like making rainbow out of green picture (by local masks)

    • @dubment
      @dubment 6 лет назад +2

      You almost got it right, the idea is to make the image more visible to the human eye without ruining the color tone (that got butchered in this video) but some people enjoy false interpretations more than reality...

    I used this tutorial to edit the milky way shot I had. I drov eout to this state park and received a second degree sunburn. My camera batteries died, along with my laptop. This is important because my memory card was full. I only had 3 shots left. My photo looked like yours in the beginning. It's not as good as the professionals but I am super happy. You have no idea. This tutorial made the whole trip worth it. I cannot thank you enough! thank you thank you thank you

    I'm glad u said this was more about how to enhance a poor photograph rather than how to make a good photograph. Because there was so much modification done to this photo that I would even hesitate to call it a photograph after you were finished with it. But still, I learned some things from your tutorial that I could apply in my own work. Thanks.

      +greenlight remember that this is a RUclips video that showcases the major tools and Sliders, it is much easier to understand, if I show it very clearly and over-the-top. • @YuriFineart
      @YuriFineart  7 лет назад

      +cyberwasp461 I'm sure your Nikon D3000 is more than capable of taking some awesome star pictures, this picture you see in the videos wasn't taken in the best conditions, I was in a quite remote spot a few days ago and the star photos turned out much better and clearer! Just go out and try it, doesn't have to be in the perfect spot!

    pretty distinct results, only if the original RAW wasn't so full of digital noise :( maybe a slightly longer exposure with lower ISO but not too long where you would start to get star-trails would make for a less noisy overall exposure :D

    • @YuriFineart

      Or image averaging out of multiple photo's which is actually something that's done a lot in astrophotography and, assuming you've already got photoshop, won't cost you anything and give you even cleaner results. Just search "Image averaging in photoshop'.

    Hi, just found your video randomly on my news feed and decided to watch and was blown away! This is awesome! I haven't taken any star photography in several months, but I'm going to go find some of my shots and open them up in Lightroom and see what I can do! I've got a 7D Mark II and Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8, so the results /should/ be better, we'll see! Awesome stuff man, subbed, liked, looking forward to watching more of your guides!

    • @YuriFineart
      @YuriFineart  7 лет назад

      +phoenix7289 hey thank you so much! Your camera and lens combo should definitely give you much more opportunity, but of course the conditions and light pollution and so on play a very big factor as well, I was in a quite secluded area a couple of days ago and the star pictures I took there turned out to be much clearer and much more visible than the one you see in this video.

      Bas Emmen Using the Camera RAW Filter in Ps CC will bring up the same tools that Lightroom uses. However, all of those tools are available in Photoshop, just named differently or used in different ways. If you open up a RAW file in Photoshop, it will open up a workspace very similar to this one with the same tools.

      +Bas Emmen you could probably do the exact same with camera RAW in Photoshop, but certainly also with other filters and curves you could get a very similar look.

    Hi Yuri
    I enjoyed your video. I've taken some good star light photos and did some LR edits, but I will try some of your other techniques. Looks like some exciting possibilities!

    A great video. Thanks I'm learning lot just like the others by watching your video.
    I'm curious...where did you take the photo? Also, I saw you exposed it for 20 seconds. If you had exposed it longer, would have gotten a not so boring photo to begin with? Just asking, not criticizing.

      +Pritesh R. Patel thanks! If you expose much longer than 20s you'll start to see star trails at this focal length, meaning the stars turn into long exposure lines because of the earth rotation and movement. I took this in a rural area about 20km from the next city, the conditions were not perfect though.

    are there any free alternatives to lightroom? I just spent all my saved money on my computer and spending 15 a month on lightroom is not a great option for me...

    11 minutes of a dude moving sliders around in Lightroom to see how it changes the photo. Thanks RUclips!
