I find I generally use mind maps to note taking ... I then tend to summarize them into Cornell style notes for quick revision of the main important points. I find combining techniques produces better results

Thank you for this. I've realized over time and also from this video that more efficient note-taking during class for me relies on quickly reviewing the material before the professor even starts talking about it. I appreciate the video; this will help me organize different types of information more efficiently.

I really appreciated this overview! The visual example of the mind mapping method is different from the way Tony Buzan advocates though and these differences are crucial for the effectiveness of this method. I can highly recommend his books on mind mapping, not just for people who identify as visual learners; it can truly be life-changing!

The mind map looks like a good idea, but I dislike it for a few reasons.
1, it’s difficult to design by hand. Unless you are experienced, it’s very easy to write too big or too small, get the spacing wrong, and just put things in the wrong place in general. It can be difficult to edit once there is a lot of content. It’s easier if you have an app (like mindmup) but the point is to do it by hand.
2, it’s difficult to add detail, so it’s not good for studying for the exam. It could be a draft for notes you make at home, but it’s less time consuming to just use a method that accommodates detail in the first place.
3, if you don’t do it neatly the first time, it quickly gets messy and difficult to read.
I’m a visual learner, but I also like things to be tidy, so I prefer the bullet points because there it more structure, it’s very clearly organized, and it will still look organized with lots of detail. I usually only used mind maps when I absolutely have to (because the teacher said so). Most things you use mind maps for, you could use the charts/tables for instead, and it looks much tidier with more detail.
If you are new to note taking, and want to test different methods before the school year starts, you can use your old school materials. Take a textbook or notebook from a previous year and choose a chapter or lesson, and make/rewrite the notes for that lesson using each of the methods, and compare to decide with you like the best. If you don’t have old textbooks or notebooks, you can use any nonfiction book or look something up on the internet.
This is a hybrid method I plan to use this coming year. What I will do is use my main notebooks (given by school) for notes and work, to make rough notes in class, just write down everything the teacher says, and all the examples and questions. I will use my own notebooks at home to make tidier, more organized notes to study from.
    1. Use a grid notebook to make it easier to lay out your notes neatly.
    2. This is mainly based on the bullet point method. Main title centered, subtitles aligned normally, bullet points for information, arrows for examples. Calculations/formulae/equations indented so they are close to centered, and have a box around them. Any other information types (dates, names, etc) can be colour coded.
    3. Use the grid to draw boxes for diagrams, charts, or small mind maps. I like to use mind maps for small things, like only part of a lesson.
    4. At the beginning or end, have a box for keywords and/or summary. Also have a box with some questions at the end.
I would uses this at home, but you could do it in class if you leave boxes for drawings, and do them latest, because they are a little time consuming

    Any tips for me?
I have to review and learn 1000 of power point pages for my next exam. Now in the corona time they uploaded videos on the topic (about 50) I just realized I took the outline method to take notes. I took them on my laptop. And I have been writing about 27 pages so far... How on earth can you write all that with your hand? I would die after one page.. And with hand writing it would have been 50+ pages I quess. I have no idea how I can bring myself to read all the notes again... But I quess I must and then I will highlight and stuff.. But this is tough af and it takes so much time... Maybe I'll mix my outline notes with Cornell method.. Never tried it
