hi everyone!! I finally, FINALLY, made a how I take notes video going over my entire process / system for taking handwritten notes. As you'll see in the videos, this effective notetaking method takes my grades from C's to A's on exams, helps me maintain a 4.0 GPA (straight A's) in high school and college, and helps me memorize material + deeply understand concepts. It also doesn't hurt that the notes are also (occasionally) neat, aesthetic / pretty, and fun!:) This video has TONS of tips in it, so I would pause every once in a while to read the text on the screen and numerous examples :) hope you enjoy the video and find it helpful!!
p.s. as I say numerous times in the video, this is the "outlining" notetaking method that works for ME but may not work for you!! However, I think some of the tips are pretty universal (like checking the syllabus / study guides, reviewing the first exam and adjusting notetaking strategies from there, etc) and can help save time and energy and help you focus on memorizing and taking notes on material that will actually boost your grades and be relevant to exams. So even if you don't plan on using this exact outlining notes method or even taking handwritten notes, hopefully some tips will still be useful :D
pps. I actually have been taking mostly iPad notes the past couple of years, so this is more of my notetaking method in high school / early college, but it's essentially identical to how I take notes on my iPad right now!

do you prefer paper notes, iPad / tablet notes, or typed notes? I've tried all three over the course of the past 5ish years and for me, regardless of the medium, handwritten notes are a must! I mainly use my iPad these days since it's just easier to download pdfs / write directly on lectures or study guides, but I wouldn't say I see an enormous difference from my notebook days (other than the convenience of not having tons of paper printables and notebooks) 🥰

As a uni student i 100% agree with these tips too!! I am a slide annotation FIEND! Most schools allow you to print usually for free or a small fee! PLEASE take advantage of the material your teacher / professor gives you BEFORE class! You can even look smart to your peers being able to answer questions since you skimmed the material beforehand!

Aesthetic notes tips - (that are kinda quicker?)
- Use a single highlighter/pen during class, you can redecorate later!
- Stick to a Color code and don’t go overboard
- Use your favourite Colors for your most hated subject! (this helps you get motivated to study it!)
- Make your study space at home comfy so that you feel motivated to study there

You had some super great and helpful tips in here that I will be using! I just wanted to add one thing that has made a huge difference to me for in person lectures, I record them! It allows me to focus 100% on what is being said and then later I can listen to take my notes and have the ability to pause. This helped me bring my grades up to As. I use the CORNELL method which consists of dividing the sheet into 3 parts (two columns and a footer). In the left column I put the ideas and questions. In the right column the class notes (the central ideas). And finally, in the footer of the page I put the summary. Of course, I put the title at the top of the page. tbh cornell method is hard for me becuz it requires a summary
i use cornell notes ! it kinda helps me :D but Im also trying different one (note methods ) that work for me!
My teacher introduced our class to Cornell notes this year. They’re really helpful! I just forget to write the summaries 😅
This video was very helpful, even though in our school (I am in middle school ) teachers still provide us with notes (what to write) but when I'll go to high school this is definitely gonna be super reliable! Thank you for putting a template to how you write notes, that you put effort into making the words stand for something unusual (it is better to remember it this way) and that you made it visual! Just the best "how to write notes" video, I've seen, and tbh I saw a lot of those...

Whenever my exams are just popping out, (or even maybe 3 months b4 lol) this is literally the first channel I go search for and furthermore its just so helpful and soothing while Im in stress.
Hi Estela, 🥰I think the whole community missed you! Happy New Year!!! I think I have been doing your experiment throughout my college career. Now with the master's degree I am still doing it. Here, we have assignments throughout the semester (which are 60% of the final grade) plus the exam, which is the other 40%.
I have excellent grades, even some with honors, ONLY by making notes of those assignments, as you have explained in the "study guide" minutes.
Even though I have the ipad, at finals time I still taking notes on paper. Print those assignments and write above them. In fact, I love to write them with my ergonomic and mechanical pencil that I have since 2015! LOL.
Anyway, taking notes digital or paper, it has always helped me retain better. If I have an exam where we can use our own notes and/or open book, I prefer to work with ipad and open them directly with PDF Expert, and start to write there in order to locate the information better with "control+F". I prefer PDF Expert better than Goodnotes because of the Windows compatibility LOL.
I don't know how to say it in English but in Spanish, apparently, the study method I follow is called: SAMI (underlining + learning + memorization + integration) Spanish words would be Subrayado+Aprendizaje+Memorización+Integración. And it's like, not just making notes by making it, it's like, you have already your lecture notes that the teacher gave you and from those notes you start to making little ones next to the main text... After that, if you want to, you can do an abstract. I think that it's more like Cornell method's.
I have discovered over the years that I do much better doing that, than spending hours and hours writing long notes and trying to summarize an entire BOOK. I mean, I still do notes, but they are not kilometers long like the ones I used to do... but much more efficient. 😀😀😀😀

No idea why this happened but:
Last year (2021 -2022 school year) I took very asthedic notes and got pretty decent grades. This year I stopped making pretty notes because I got too annoyed from it, and my grades went down hill. I even stopped taking notes at all because my teacher didn't care. When I was in Grade 6, my teacher almost forced us to take notes. In my opinion, note taking will really help you to remember what the lesson is about. ❤
A tip from me: Take notes in class! Even if you don't think you need too. It will really help you to remember the topic :) (or at least it really helped me 😅)
I write quick and ugly notes in each class, then after school or during a break, I make pretty, aestethic notes

This is perfect timing!! Made the choice to try handwritten notes instead of typed this semester. And I’ve been needing some direction. I’m definitely going to try all of this semester.
These are actually really good tips for taking notes, I don't usually take aesthetic notes, I usually just write down the important stuff and the key words but its very effective, I got a 100 in math. Also sometimes after school, I rewrite my notes in my binder or I do it in my ipad then print it out, but I usually asvance my lessons, that way I just have to listen and understand the lecture and do not worry about taking notes.

for me, i always take notes just like messy notes scribbled on a piece of paper, then go over and rewrite them at home and make them look pretty. it 1- makes them look nice, and 2- you go over everything you learned for a second time
I also have a question: How do you keep your desk space so organized? i have a relatively small space and i clean it but it always manages to remain messy

Key for taking notes:
Record your professor! Then when you get home just write down everything from recording. That way you will have enough time to write down your notes without stressing!

Well thought out video for the spring semester instead of quiz let I’m switching to smart cards+ from the iOS store for studying, use the SQ3R study technique, and test myself so to simplify I write down questions I have about the material and use them to review the chapter, and after reading the chapter and taking notes I’ll use the sample questions to answer the chapter, and go over what I need to review until I understood the material. Very good video.
