Amy Shira Teitel is a historian and journalist who made a name for herself as a blogger and RUclips creator focusing on mid 20th-century history, specifically the space race with her RUclips channel, Vintage Space. But her interests go well beyond rockets and moon landings (she can read ancient Greek, which is insane). Today we talk about the frustrations of being an online creator, the dangers of being pigeonholed, and the amazing past and future of space travel. Her newest book, Fighting For Space is available in bookstores and online.

Two of my favorite youtubers!
How come the algorithm has NEVER suggested Amy's channel for me? Falling into this rabbit hole of amazing knowledge right now!
Frazer Caine is another for you
I'm shaking my fist at the algo too. Meh.
I have a love hate relationship with the algorithm, but I found these channels by clicking on the channels tabs of presenters who are really good at what they do:
(All these channels have produced content about space)
- (Audience Q&A) Fraiser Cain
- (Niches) John Micheal Godier (and his second channel Event Horizon)
- (Future) Issac Arthur
- (History) Amy's channel (then called Vintage Space)
- (Cosmology/Astrophysics) PBS Spacetime
- (Cosmology/Astrophysics) Paul M Sutter
- (Physics) Sabbine Hossenfelder
- (Physics) Fermilab
- (Engineering) Curious Droid
- (Wildcard/Trivia) Joe Scott
It makes you wonder how many other channels are out there for you to binge watch the whole catalog, but you just don't know about it yet. I average about one channel a month, discovering and binging almost everything, then being forced to wait a week for the next bite like every other subscriber.
This whole channel has given me new creators to follow.
Of all the guests you've had (including those after this episode, since I'm coming to this late), Amy is the one that most excited me. She is an incredibly talented creator and historian.
Amy gets so much hostile garbage. I am so happy that you had her on the show.
Great conversation. Amy has an awesome energy!
And thank you for crediting your producer Kimmie Britt and your editor Brey Browne. Unsung hero's of this channel. This content does require dedicated professionals to give us the content and research that supports Joe as a creator. Give some love for the whole unsung behind the scenes folk who make this happen. Love you all.
I love the content that both of you create! It was fun listening to your conversation!
Finally, someone is speaking out to Elon Musk about how stupid this whole idea of colonizing Mars is.
Agreed
Joe, this is my first episode from this channel and I hate to tell you, it’s going to be tough to hold up to this! Love everything about this interview and the candid conversation. As a viewer, it’s good to hear about what it’s like as a creator. So thrilled two see two of my favorites together. Support you both regardless the content.
I love that two of my favorite RUclipsrs are sitting down for a chat. It makes me feel like I'm making good choices in life. Thank you Amy and Joe.
What an awesome conversation... So glad yous talked .. loved it, two of my fave youtube folks...
I won’t be able to watch either of you because of joe’s ponytail and Amy’s receding hairline!
(Just kidding)
Love the new show! I only found myself disagreeing with Amy on the moon thing for the main reason being a push in the innovation needed for all future deep space travel. Especially testing regolith with 3d printers, sending autonomous robots for testing. But yea no cold War so to speak but...there is still a space race, just a commercial one. Love the channels and I say make what ever videos you want, screw those baby fans that have nothing left to do other than complain.
I've followed Amy and Vintage Space since about 2014 and I was really surprised and disappointed at how other long term viewer took her change in direction. I don't actually see how it was much of a change at all. I can't think of a more logical direction for a channel focused on the Apollo era to spread horizontally into content about the many other big technology projects going on in the US at the time alongside a wave of social, economic and political upheavals both in the US and globally. I thought the spy plane series was a great way to start down that path. Some of the complaints were frankly ridiculous. People were literally mad at her for taking time away from YT to write. You know, like what you do when you have a contract with a publisher.
Trolls should definitely be called mosquitoes.
I watched some of Amy's videos a few years ago and found them interesting. Her separate interests in 1) vintage stuff and 2) space exploration is an unusual combination. But there's an inevitable tension between the two since space exploration continues to develop and do new things, which by definition aren't "vintage" (yet!). The newer a space exploration mission is, the less Amy seems to like it. It's odd to find someone so passionate about vintage space and so dismissive about current space exploration.
This makes my week! I took a break from the internets and found out you have a new show! Awesome show dude!
thank you for posting those videos here , also like Amy a lot , if you could please tell her to continue creating. i love her content. By the way the moonbase is of course a piss contest . this time between china and the US.
Thanks for having Amy on, thumbs up and have a nice day.
Oh ,SCE to ox, sce to auxiliary.
She's my definition of a dream girl.
I mean, she's gorgeous, but can you imagine how intellectually stimulating it is to have such a girl around?
I'm a big fan and I have no doubt everything she will do, she'll do it right.
Thanks Amy (an Joe) for making th world less stupid.
IMO, we need get back to the Moon & the need to build more Space Stations is because, we have not solved the Planetary Collision Event issue that plagues all "advanced" civilizations.
Example: We do not know how plate tectonics got started because, IMO, Geophysicists do not learn more about Active-phase Comets, or when they transition to Impact-phase Comets. Also, the subject of Plasma Physics would help.
And, speaking on the Apollo program, Neil Armstrong became obsessed (look it up) with learning about Indigenous history for the Americas, after, he returned from his Moon trip. Why? And, he refused to discuss both topics beyond standard PR.
If you want a challenge to present an 80 year plan for Space exploration/expansion and to have the United States leading in this field, is for the President to enact a new three(3) Space Stations project, built within 10 years after 2025. This includes additional launch facilities here on Earth. Because ALL government programs are factually "jobs" programs.
Furthermore, comet impacts have smashed Earth before, cracked plates, relocated megatons of crust & vaporized as much. Impact-phase comets are Mother Nature's erase/reset civilizations button.

I always admired your poise and ability to communicate subjects about the space program. I often try and think of "space" questions which haven't been asked yet (I get so tired of the toilet inquiries).
If I was before several Astronauts who were onstage taking questions, I would bring up a couple. 1."Claustrophobia, where are you on the subject and why do Astronauts appear unaffected by it?"
2. When an Astronaut dies, I would expect the Space Medicine crowd would naturally have their minds on an autopsy, especially if the person walked on the Moon. But that's not my question. I wonder what kind of mechanism does NASA employ if, say, an Astronaut dies unexpectedly somewhere in the United States, do they send a specific team to secure the remains? Just wondering... Again, you have a lot to be proud of... don't let the bastards get you down. Go slow. Oh, and like I always say, "The Crew of Apollo 13 proved Survival is the BEST Success"
P. S. Deke Slayton sent me a typewritten letter in response to one of my inquiries. He explained he had grown a "thick skin" in dealing with negative People.
OK just purchased "Breaking the chains of gravity" and will do the same for "Fighting for Space" once it comes to Audible!
@21:48 Regarding wanting an option to hide the top comments in the youtube dashboard: You might try using an addon like ublock origin or stylish (or user CSS support in your browser of choice) to hide it yourself. That doesn't mean RUclips shouldn't fix the issue themselves, but sometimes workarounds can help keep you sane.
For her question, why are we so fixated about putting people on Mars. With it's low gravity well (and currently thin atmosphere) it's the perfect place for other launches to the rest of the solar system and beyond. (Mining the asteroid belt for example)(The Expanse, anyone?)
Two of my favorite RUclips creators having a chat. So cool. Thank you both for doing this. Makes my day.
So. Curiosity stream webpage is unavailable on my TV, dispite being available yesterday. Nebula is clunky and not available as a app on tv's.
I'm totally going to watch one of Joes vids and complain about his bangs now. :)
You both are fine. Keep on doing what YOU think is the good stuff.
love Amy's channel... along with other space youtubers and of course you Joe
Knocked it out of the park again. Another one of my fav RUclipsrs.🎇👍💪😎🌟😃🇮🇪💚
Oh dude. this video was good. Way better than expected. Continue wayward son.
Joe this is positive feedback. I really like what you do and these conversations are great. Thanks.
*Google search successful…* Ugg trying to find her other channel. Help! LOL
I love beautiful smart women being beautiful and smart. subbed.
That woman just won my sub. Cute and cool.Unlike Joe....
The Fifties by David Halberstam
Shout out to poverty point! Glad you brought that up, as a Louisiana native
She is such a ditz. She's not even close to the accolades given to her.
I thought we were going back to the Moon to mine it? Guess not.
17:30 please ignore the haters :)
The Vintage Space
Great interview
That was great!
Great to see Pete!
Just bonkers good. Thanks for moving foreword. Always appreciate new creative and curious thought.
Great, candid conversation! Yes. Being an individual creator is indeed a rough road. But we would not have it any other way. 'Been doing it for 47 years. Addendum: I have but one, singular requirement for rocket and space flight design- It has to look SEXY. Be well, you two :)
I wouldn't necessarily buy it but how it wouda gone happy v. How it didn't?
The net world mind space is massive. Probability of jerk is sum of percents by population count. The jerk index is high.
Likely a galactic "weird" monkey through G translate no sense to arachnidism?
Quiet majority, love u both :) love the new channel Joe, thx for putting these on RUclips cuz I don't do podcasts for whatever reason. ❤️
Thank you for putting this on RUclips, I never would have found time to subscribe to the podcast
And thank you both for the content you make, I look forward to Vintage Space videos (whether cold war machines or the men and women of the time
You two *almost* broached the subject of my favorite episode, "Why going to Mars is a Terrible Idea". ( I personally loved that video).
It is great to be pigeon holed, and also not so much. Its why FOX NEWS or MSNBC stick with only a certain slant. Once you have your audience curated, do not mess with it. The last thing a curated audience wants is something new from you. They want to see variations on the same subject matter over and over again. It also helps the advertiser since they too want to know exactly the demographic you curate. I know RUclips is a bit different than TV, but the bottom line is the same. For a content creator to branch out for their own satisfaction, it is going to be not fun since their audience expects certain things done in a certain way. You can opt to abandon them, but then you have to accept curating a new audience.
Big fan of both of you and love to watch the huge variety of videos and subjects you cover. Please keep going and continue to make such brilliant content on both RUclips and all the other places you work too.
Big time favorites :)
So happy you talked to Amy 😊😊 along with you she is favourite creative. You both give me rabbit hole to get lost in🥰🥰 absolutely brilliant
If Fusion is [still] 20 years away, maybe building the moon mining base now makes sense? 😁
Why are people saying they’re disappointed in you? I would say its just because they have to make everything about them. Anyone who is comfortable in their own skin would not feel the need to impose expectations on others. They absolutely need to be ignored.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Are we ready for a moon base or are we doing it for a show? One of the lessons I've learned in life is that, at times, you get ready for something by doing it. Not always the case, but not to be discounted, either.
Interesting Chat
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with all of us 👍😀
You both are awesome. I love watch Joe or Amy, while making dinner, just run one episode after another. You guys are on the big 70" screen in our living room all the time.
Really glad i found this channel. Binge listening all the episodes while i work.
Amy is great! I hope she can shrug off the haters and get back to RUclips. She also has a fun twitch channel.
I've never heard of Amy, (no offense), But she seems very genuine and down to earth. That was a great interview.
Amy's a treasure. Love her!
You both make great content.
I stopped watching Amy's videos simply because they no longer interested me. It wasn't any decision to quit, but enough videos went by that I did not want to click. Eventually she dropped off my radar. For me it wasn't sexism or any other -ism, it was simply content I did or did not want to watch. There are plenty of channels I have drifted from because the topics don't attract me.
Amy is so hot. ,,,,,, Pete is a cool cat... and Space is awesome. LOL! Joking... I LOVE the Vintage Space. Go Amy you ROCK!
I enjoyed that.
she's the only reason why I love Canada.
The reason that there are some negative comments is so creator's don't get too fat headed. It's an ego equalizer.
The subject of going to Mars in the ensuing conversation is flawed perspective imo. For two people with above average history and space knowledge they seem to not understand the repercussions of not doing aggressive space exploration or the repercussions of delaying it in any way. It's like they don't know or care what the implications are in putting off the inevitable. Like there is no additional risk or cost for not progressing sooner rather than later. I attribute the lady's lack of insight into not living long enough to have learned by experience and wisdom, just by books and other people's biased agendas. I'm not sure what to attribute Joes casual attitude to since he's older and wiser and more open minded. I'd prefer to be wrong about both of them.
I personally like both Joe and Amy. Their conversation reminds me of the wisdom of iron versus stone. But from a practical and logical point, how do you decide to run public comment and not expect a good deal of of idiocy from the average public? If you want cerebral responses you wouldn't publish on YouBoob. If you can't easily handle stupid comments or even intelligent rebuttal or opinions then turn comments off and/or move to another platform to broadcast your message. Whining about negative comments is pointless.
True.
Well, this is my first experience with her and I see why people have a bad reaction to her...
At 20:00 ish, regarding comments feedback.
Wouldn't it be great if platforms has a community feature the creators had full control over. Where these supportive fans could self organize moderation features to the point the entire task could be offloaded from the creators. Then comments could be flagged by the supporters who care and may have the time to improve the feedback, especially for the creators sanity...
Comment: "bangs suck" (hide demotion: from commenter, so they don't know they were blocked and thus explode more.
Comment: Got 4k "are you sick", (Flag: health comment. And choose the one most empathetic).
Comment: "What about ___", (Flag: Off Topic Critical), doesn't contribute to the theme.
Comment: "Your great, good show." (Flag: generic praise).
Comment: "Some interesting question or expansion to the topic" (Flag: star as good for feedback).
Then the creators can just ignore comments that suck as curated by their chosen fan bases who want to help. And they could pick to "like" all praise, and can look at and maybe respond to the stars.
I feel your pain though don't experience it myself.
It's a fine line between filtering out toxicity and creating an echo chamber. I agree comments like "I hate your hair" are useless and shouldn't happen, but if you have fans that are filtering comments, there is the possibility that any criticism will get deleted or blocked, turning it into an echo chamber run by a bunch of sycophants.
Sorry .. I kinda feel that she is too negative
Not at all (imho). She's a deeply knowledgeable space program historian and a widely experienced academic. I believe her views are realistic. Be well.
She is a bitter feminist 🙄
Be Well.
Amy is beautiful and her content is the bomb! She do her. Screw the trolls. Both you, Joe, and Amy have some of my favorite content on the whole of RUclips. Great interview 👍
One of the features of both Amy's and Joe's work that I appreciate the most is the shear variety of material they cover. Good interview.
It's a shame people seem to think that their negative reactions matter to such a degree that they can spew hatred. If you don't like something, just move on.
AST is being a little presumptuous with the "expert" commenters commenting on educational RUclips.
There aren't many experts who click on a video just to display their intellectual superiority over the creator. Most experts want to watch a video because to complete their knowledge on a subject, to fill in the gaps in their understanding, to find simpler ways of explaining its more complicated portions, or even to listen to a fresh perspective.
The most common case of comments is the one where the viewer knows A, B, C, D about a subject, the video discusses C, D, E, F on the subject, and the comment wants to talk about A & B. In this case, nobody can claim intellectual superiority over the other. In fact, the commenter is grateful that they have learned E & F about the subject (which they never knew before). They're certainly not mad that you dropped A & B out of the video. How much better would things be if we all knew A, B, C, D, E and F about a subject?
That is what the "expert" is trying to get across.
You can choose to take on their comment with wisdom, which means thanking them for the comment. Now that you have more information about a subject, use it to refine your understanding of the content and post a follow-up video expanding on the new parts.
Or you can take the egotist's approach, where you dismiss the comment with scorn, call the commenter a loser, sometimes include a hate-based comment based on stereotype, have them shadowbanned, and wonder why you're losing viewers on your channel / followers on social media.
This applies to both the commenter and the creator.
Nice bangs, ponytails and eyebrows 😋
It turns out a large portion of your original audience were arseholes !
I loved your original channel , I really enjoyed your books . Stay true to yourself , follow your heart , and further success will follow .
Joe AND Amy in the same video? Hell Yeah!
Well done both of you.
i am a sub of amy's.. but no notifications... love her content!! i watch to learn things...
Her career took a hard left turn off a cliff when she started showing her Feminist side.
Well she is single. She might be just eye candy
👍
Actually. Any man who is well grommed and looks good plucks his eyebrows.
If your a man who's NOT plucking your eyebrows you need to up your game.
