      I'd heard of him around 2010 I think. Honestly, I thought that he was some wildly genius 'Good Will Hunting' type kid because of how young he looks. I, ignorantly, just pushed it off until he was on the JRE for the first time years ago. The fact that he can explain something so simply while keeping it so intriguing that you can't help but want to know more is what makes him a rock star. I mean that literally. He makes science cool. I'm 37 and I know me saying something is cool doesn't hold much meaning for kids. I am also a father of two kids (15 and 22), one in high school the other about to graduate college. I see the way that those generations look at people like him now. There's not a chance in hell that in the 90s he'd have been able to tour around the world like a comedian or musician could. He wouldn't have sold enough tickets to break even much less be profitable. That in itself is, IMHO, is one of the most important things (if not THE most important) to positively impact the future of the human race for thousands of years to come.

    I had never heard of getting to the black hole singularity as "getting to the end of time". This entire video is blowing my mind. The idea of space time being an emergent phenomena of a deeper theory (and the fact that we can actually study it!) is just mind blowing. I also listen to the Mindscape podcast with Sean Carroll and I'm just in awe of how much we know about the universe (and how much we know we don't know!). I hope you can have him as a guest too.

    • @edwardlulofs444
      @edwardlulofs444 2 года назад +7

      Yes, a recent idea is that black holes don't collapse to a singularity. Because time slows down as "gravity" gets stronger as you drop into the black hole, then the collapse "stops" because time "stops". I like this idea. Eventually, after billions and billions of years for us, then then collapse will bounce off the quantum singularity. But there is no way to even theoretically test this idea. I think the answer will come out of quantum gravity.

    • @finalGambitShedinja
      @finalGambitShedinja 2 года назад +4

      The best way I’ve heard it explained is like this:
      to ask what happened before the big bang is like asking, “what’s north of the north pole”. same with a black hole. “What happens after you get to the singularity” is a meaningless question

    • @edwardlulofs444
      @edwardlulofs444 2 года назад +3

      @@finalGambitShedinja Yes, that is a good answer. However, I have been to mathematical physics seminars where the goal of the speaker 's talk was what happened before the big bang. I was not too impressed. Again, maybe quantum gravity might have answers.

    • @sntslilhlpr6601
      @sntslilhlpr6601 2 года назад +5

      I think I inherently knew that but I had never seen it put into words. Because as you fall through the event horizon, from your perspective the entire universe goes in fast forward. So it begs the question, if you were to fall into a rotating black hole, one that doesn't spaghettifi you instantly, could you actually experience the heat death of the universe? Now that's a depressing thought.

    • @edwardlulofs444
      @edwardlulofs444 2 года назад +1

      @@sntslilhlpr6601 Curiously, the larger the black hole, the less the tidal forces that try to rip you apart - at least at first. So you might live a few minutes longer. Currently, another aspect that is being debated is that the Hawking radiation produces a "firewall" just inside the event horizon that incinerates everything into subatomic particles.. I'm not sure that I agree with this calculation, but there is only death in a black hole.

    This idea of "islands of meaning" is a consequence of Sagan's interpretation of conscious life as "a way for the cosmos to know itself". More than self reassuring or giving us too much self-importance it can give us some proper perspective on how isolated this phenomenon really is, and thus how precious it is.

    • @DThron
      @DThron 2 года назад +6

      I agree that the woo-woo brigade constantly tries to attach self- important meaning to this stuff, but I think it's possible to see consciousness as as integral element of the way the universe works without thinking we are special. If it's true, it makes us as special as rocks; the existence of rock is important to the existence of the Earth, but if the rocks start believing it's all about them, it sounds a little self involved.

    • @MidianVGC
      @MidianVGC 2 года назад +4

      All events are meaningless if there’s nobody to witness it or feel its consequences. The universe doesnt need any meaning. WE need the universe to have a meaning for us.

    • @DThron
      @DThron 2 года назад

      @@MidianVGC I'd take it even further: to the extent that the idea of "the universe" is just another projection of ourselves. Even in trying to express how it doesn't care about us, or how meaningless and small we are in regards to it - this is still a self-centered point of view; we're only trading the grandiose narcissism of believing we are the center of it all for the vulnerable narcissism of our infinite unimportance. When in reality, the universe outside our perception of it is simply not an understandable concept, and any description of it is only ultimately describing ourselves.

I can definitely say in the last few years the weary he explains this and the milk dropped in water analogy he got my attention. I think I relate to trying to use my, or, his ways of communicating thoughts from an artistic eWorld view where everything can be viewed in far more abstract ways than people who just aren’t into art, or as much as others. I think if I was a teacher or if I had children, I would use your channels for teaching them science and whatever else you may talk about, because you could easily draw young people into learning more about science and even decide on a career in science too! Most channels on science tend to talk too fast and NEVER explain what they are meaning by certain complex things, they just say it and go on to the next thing! This piece links closely with another article I read recently about how a meteorite, discovered in 2012 has recently been discovered to contain an assortment of amino acids, necessary for the formation of life. While only another "piece" of the primordial puzzle, I found this discovery particularly important since the age of the rock pre-dated the formation of our own Sun, which means these very building blocks of life could likely exist everywhere throughout the universe, waiting to collide with a planet in which the goldilocks conditions allow these elements to form more complex life.... like our own planet.

    Even the many, many sci-fi books I’ve read seem to concede we don’t have much chance of reaching another Galaxy, with the exception of one where we reached Andromeda about 2 million years from now. The Milky Way is our only chance to find another abiogenesis or intelligent civilization.

    • @esquilax5563
      @esquilax5563 2 года назад

      All depends on the timescale you're considering. If our descendants can keep going for a few billion years, they can easily make it to other galaxies. Especially Andromeda, which we will anyway fall into during that time. Hard to write an interesting story about beings so unimaginably more advanced than us though. I suggest we upload our minds to the cloud, and come back to the topic in a billion years or so

    Thank you for saying "Observable Universe". WE are still fleas on the back of an elephant trying to describe our all of existence. Too often our newest telescopes are supposed to "See back to the beginning of time" or with factual conviction, "The universe was this size and is growing by this amount". These assumptions are just that, based upon our meniscal point of view. I think that perspective is important.

    About the possibility of there having been a second genesis of life on earth: I've wondered for a long time (and not been able to find out) whether anyone has ever tested the living organisms around deep ocean vents. Do they in fact have the same kinds of DNA (or RNA) and proteins that the surface life has? Their biochemistry is quite different.

    • @solarhammer6319

      Would mass extinctions... be considered as mass genesis's?

    • @jamespaxton6395
      @jamespaxton6395 2 года назад

      Of all the life that has been tested, it all has the same base code, that is in everything from a cold virus to a fruit fly to people. The vent bacteria and viruses have it to, but some have been found to be older than the dinosaurs supposedly

    What an absolute and unexpected treat this is! I never imagined it'd be a thing - one of my favourite RUclips celebrities casually conversing and sharing ideas with a well known expert (and national treasure to me) it's surely testament to the openness of science and the search for understanding, kudos to you both!

    This verse that we live in is incredibly vast, and I believe the building blocks of life, DNA are everywhere, I believe life is easy to make but surviving is the key whether it be a planet not yet ripe for life, or if life destroys itself before anyone notices. For all we know when dinosaurs were large and in charge on Earth LOL, Mars had lakes rivers and life abundant. You see life is there it's really just a matter of Time Actual...

    I find his premise that consciousness is the only source of meaning to be equally inane and unsupported. Stars and planets might not be self-reflective, but they represent colossal order, movement, development, and therefore information. Life carries a greater degree of complexity, and is the next stage up the ladder of organizational structures… but that doesn’t reduce the competitive value of everything beneath it to zero. The notion is destructively biased and circular, warped to the conscious perspective, and feels like an extension of the human-centric fallacy.

    • @sntslilhlpr6601
      @sntslilhlpr6601 2 года назад +1

      I agree. It's seems like a very pompous assumption that we are the only thing that gives meaning to the universe. It's a very atheistic approach, but tbf there is literally no evidence for anything else. But there's also no evidence for atheism, so I think drawing any conclusions like that is just arrogant.
      Yes, life is very complex and consciousness even more so, but look at the complexity of stars, neutron stars, and black holes, one of the things Dr. Cox said he's actively working on.
      We can barely see the end of the observable universe and we don't even know how big it is because of the cosmic horizon. And we certainly can't see outside of the whole thing. Who's to say that there isn't someone who can? And we're just an interesting blip on their radar? Just some backwater species who actually managed to start to comprehend the confines of what its living in?
      You can call it God if you want. But for all we know they could just be some alien running a program on his computer. And yeah that's a depressing thought, but I find it an appropriate point to make when the other guy is talking about how the universe has no meaning without smart people...
